Very interesting. Our guide Mikiko shared a great amount of history and knowledge of the emperor, samurai and the shogun. Beautiful place to walk and explore.

Itinerary
Wadakura Fountain Park, located near the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, Japan, is a beautifully designed public space known for its tranquil atmosphere and stunning water features. Originally constructed in 1961 to commemorate the royal wedding of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, the park was redesigned and reopened in 1995 to celebrate the wedding of the Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako.
Sakurada Tatsumi Yagura is a three-story watchtower located at the southeast corner of the former Edo Castle. It overlooks the moat and was an important part of the castle's defense system, allowing guards to monitor the surrounding area. The present tower dates from the Edo period and was damaged during the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. It was carefully restored to its original appearance soon afterward. Today, it remains one of the few surviving watchtowers of Edo Castle, showcasing the castle's impressive military architecture.
Ote-mon Gate is the main entrance to the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace. During the Edo period, it served as the principal gate of Edo Castle, where only authorized samurai and officials could enter. The massive stone walls and sturdy wooden gate were designed for defense as well as prestige. Today, visitors pass through the same historic entrance to explore the peaceful gardens, offering a glimpse into Japan's feudal past and the legacy of the Tokugawa shoguns.
The East Gardens of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo are a serene escape from the city. Once part of Edo Castle, they feature lush gardens, ponds, and historic ruins. Highlights include the Honmaru area with castle remnants and the Ninomaru Garden for traditional Japanese scenery. Visitors can stroll among cherry blossoms in spring and colorful foliage in autumn, immersing themselves in Japan's feudal history and tranquil beauty.
Suwa no Chaya tea house was built by order of Emperor Meiji in 1912, in the Fukiage Gardens in the western part of the Imperial Palace grounds. The teahouse was moved to its current location in 1968. The name Suwa Teahouse refers to the Shinto deity Suwa, to whom there was a small shrine near the teahouse’s original location.
Ninomaru Garden is a traditional Japanese strolling garden located within the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace. It was reconstructed in the 1960s based on historical drawings from the reign of the ninth Tokugawa shogun, Tokugawa Ieshige, preserving the style of the Edo period. The garden features a peaceful pond, seasonal flowers, carefully arranged stones, and elegant trees. It is also home to long-fin koi, an elegant variety of ornamental carp known for their graceful, flowing fins.

Miyuki was the sweetest and most informative guide! She gave us so much historical information. Highly recommend this tour for any first time visitors! Great holistic view of the palace grounds.
Tatsie had great history of the area and interesting facts about the time period and emporers.
We had a fantastic tour with Miko, learning about Japanese history and culture. She is fun to be with and a great communicator. Highly recommend her.
My husband and I really enjoyed Mikiko walking tour. She expertly wove the history and evolution of the different eras into our tour. She was professional and engaging despite the intermittent rain. We highly recommend her as a tour guide and look forward to taking others tours offered by the company in the time we are in Japan.
Thanks Miko! Enjoyed your happy energy and knowledgeable insights!!
Wonderful tour! Very informative and a pleasant experience. A++
The tour was great. It was very informed and my tour guide was Kaz and she was great answered all of my questions and really made the tour
Kaz did a fabulous job with our tour of the Imperial Palace. She was so knowledgeable and helpful answering all of my questions.
Miko led us on the Imperial Palace grounds tour for 2 1/2 hours. She shared a lot of history with us and answered our questions knowledgeably. Her inquisitive nature meant she asked us many questions as well. Overall, we felt we got so much out of the tour, definitely more than if we just visited on our own and read placards which is what we usually do.
Miyuki was a wonderful guide. I learned a lot about Japanese history in addition to her insights about the remains of the castle and the lovely gardens.
Wonderful Imperial Palace and Edo Castle Walking Tour We thoroughly enjoyed our walking tour of the Imperial Palace East Gardens and Edo Castle area in Tokyo. Our guide, Mieko, was absolutely delightful, spoke excellent English and was incredibly knowledgeable about the history of the area. What really made the tour special was the wealth of visual information Mieko brought along. The laminated images and maps helped bring the former Edo Castle to life and made it much easier to imagine how the area would once have looked. The fascinating stories about the samurai and their enduring legacy added even more colour to the experience. It was a wonderfully engaging trip back in time, set against the beautiful gardens of the Imperial Palace. We came away having learned so much and would warmly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Tokyo who wants to discover more about Japan's fascinating history. Michael and Doriel Nelson
Kenta, our guide, did a fantastic job! His english was very good and was very knowledgeable about the history of the imperial palace in Tokyo. He also shared lots of interesting information about modern Japanese culture. We asked lots of questions on the tour, and he did a wonderful job answering all of them and we had great conversations. I highly recommend this tour, we learned so much more than we would have otherwise just wandering through the site, and it was so fun being about to talk to someone who grew up in Japan and was familiar with the history. We especially loved also hearing about some interesting baseball facts he shared with us, and learning about Osaka, his hometown :) Thank you, Kenta, for an awesome tour!
Kenya was a very good guide! He was very knowledgeable in Japanese history! I appreciated that very much since I’ve always n been interested in Japanese history since I was young and ended up taking a Japanese history course in university! Kenta is very passionate about his job which adds to the experience! At the end of the day there’s no other guide that will devote their time and energy into the tour like Kenta did! Interacting with him felt like we mere friends for a very long time!
Our tour guide, Loc with Tokyo Localized, is extremely knowledgeable about Japanese history relating to Tokyo’s Imperial Palace and gardens. During his entertaining, informative, and well-paced walking tour, Loc showed us just the right number of illustrations, photos, and maps to help us visualize his points. In addition, he could answer all kinds of questions about current and twentieth-century members of the imperial family, and he even displayed a family tree (with photos) to explain relationships. Loc’s excellent rapport with participants prompted us to book another walking tour with him that we attended two days later. We highly recommend both this outdoor tour through historic, lovely grounds and Tokyo Localized’s Loc, who leads various tours in Tokyo.
Miko was excellent, very informative and polite and took time to speak to us both , a credit all round
Thank you Kei, excellent knowledgable and warm guide
This was a great and informative tour. Kei was a lovely guide and made us all fascinated with the imperial tradition and history
Thoroughly enjoyable your by Emi.
Great tour and info from Keiko.
Very informative and well planned tour around the Edo palace and it's gardens. Our guide Emmy was very knowledgeable and had a good rapport with the whole group. The tour lasted around 2 and half hours. There's no additional entry fee to see the gardens, however a mandatory security check is required at the entrance for which there may be a queue. The palace itself is off limits to tourists, but the gardens are accessible. I would recommend this tour to those interested in Japanese history, especially regarding the emperors and shoguns.
Midori was amazing and very knowledgeable
Loc was a fantastic tour guide. Perfect blend of history and modern knowledge, and had plenty of recommendations for other activities and food in Tokyo and Japan!
Kaz was a great guide! She allowed us plenty of time to see the side attractions while keeping us on time. Her visual aides were helpful in her historical background storytelling and we appreciated all the extra little tips and tricks for Japan traveling .
Kento was an excellent guide - very knowledgeable and made it interesting. Went at the perfect pace with a couple of short breaks. Thanks !
Kaz did a great job explaining the landmarks around the Imperial Palace. Highly recommend!
This was the best introduction to Tokyo and Japan I could possibly imagine! Kenta took us on a journey in space and time from Edo to Tokyo. He is incredibly knowledgeable and explains everything with a lot of passion and humour. If you're still browsing, don't miss out on this tour, it will provide a great base on which to build your understanding of the culture. Super worth it.
The guide Loc was amazing. His knowledge of history was thru the roof.
Emmy was an exceptional knowledgeable guide. She explained not only all about the history of the Edo times, but as well about modern life in Japan. I enjoyed it very much the nearly 3 hours tour!!
Miko was excellent, she was charming and knowledgeable. Her communication style was excellent. She was able to provide big picture context and explain small details. The tour was fun and we learned so much about the history and the people. We would go with Miko again on other tours.
Wonderful experience. The tour had a dozen people, which worked well. Miko is an experienced guide, was attentive to each of us,, encouraged questions, and provided insight to each place we visited on the Imperial Palace grounds. She also built in well-timed rest breaks. We came away with a better understanding of key historical events, and a glimpse at what may lay behind the respectful way that the Japanese treat their public spaces.. Miko’s enthusiasm was contagious, she enjoyed our questions and being with us, and she would brighten even a very dark day. Very glad we went with her.
We had a fabulous tour of the gardens of the imperial palace with our guide Miko. Great walk and information and answered everyone’s questions. Would thoroughly recommend the tour!
It was very pleasurable to have Miko as a guide,
Thank you Miko for a wonderful tour
Very nice tour. Beautiful gardens with Milo.
Miko was a very knowledgeable and friendly guide. Many thanks for an excellent tour. I highly recommend. Imperial gardens are a beautiful place.
He was very friendly and very familiar with the place.
Kei was a wonderful tour guide with extensive knowledge of the Imperial Palace and Edo Castle. She shared stories, pictures and history as we walked and answered all my questions. I loved all of the tour with my favorite part being the Japanese Garden with its peaceful pathways. Thank you, Kei! Trish
Excellent tour of the Imperial Palace Gardens. Can't see the palace but lots of history and stories. Our guide Mei was excellent, good English, informative, and showed us things we would not have noticed on our own.
Mei was great Full of useful information
The tour lacked a flow and engagement with us. We decided to finish up half way through the tour as we felt that we were able to complete the tour ourselves.
Our guide was wonderful. She listen to us and answered our questions. Top tier and a great sense of humor. Wonderful to have a tour guide like Miko!!
Miko was a wonderful guide. She was very excited and happy to share so much knowledge about Japanese history.
Amazing tour with Miko- she is very friendly and knows a lot!
Miyu was an amazing tour guide! Very knowledgeable and informative, we had a great time learning about the imperial palace and would absolutely recommend Miyu to anyone visiting in the future!!
I had such a great time with Emi! It is my first time in Tokyo and I didn’t have a lot of prior knowledge of Japanese history so she was very clear and explained everything beautifully. Going on a weekday morning was great because it wasn’t too crowded and it was roughly 2 hours. This is really great for first time travelers because most of the buildings in the garden don’t exist anymore so it does help to have someone explain it. I think if I walked around my myself I would be a little confused and just think it was only gardens without any context of the historical buildings.
Kenta was an amazing guide. He gave us lots of information and personalized the tour to our background and interests. I highly recommend this tour.
Hello! Unexpectedly, I managed to get a private tour of the gardens without any other tourists in the group. The tour was very pleasant and had a wonderful atmosphere. Miki-san told me a great deal not only about the gardens but also about the Imperial Family, history, and culture. I really enjoyed the tour and learned a lot. Thank you very much!
What a nice, pleasant and relaxing tour with Miko. While there was a lot of walking, Miko made it a great day. There were only 3 people on the tour so there was a lot of time for Q&A. Miko, a retired school teacher did a wonderful job presenting the Imperial Palace and its history. Arigatō
