Amazing food tour of Shibuya. We enjoyed our evening with Chiria - a little history of the area along with amazing knowledge of the food!
Had a wonderful time walking through local markets, and sampling various delicious foods. Kieran was very informative and helped me buy some gifts for my family.
Lauren got in touch with us weeks ahead and catered the tour to our liking. We visited and learned about places we would've never encountered on our ow. Highly recommended.
Marc Paris was awesome! He was knowledgeable, fun, helpful and helped us plan the rest of our trip to Tokyo. my wife is Celiac (no gluten) which is challenging in Japan. Marc found spots for us to try and showed us where the locals would eat. He recommended spots for our teenagers to shop for manga/anime collectibles, and helped us organize the places we wanted to go into efficient day trips. Can't recommend him highly enough.
We had such a wonderful time with Mari on our first night in Tokyo. She met us at our hotel and took us to one of our favorite meals! It was a rainy night and she made it a great night with delicious food and incredible crepes. Thank you Mari!
Yohei is a very professional and accommodating guide. He communicated very well before starting the tour to make sure that we get the most out of this experience. He is a pleasant person and he did take us to local Japanese traditional restaurants with amazing food experience. A highly recommended tour for anyone who wants to experience local cusins outside the touristic restaurants.
Horrible experience - not even worth a penny! Because my hotel delayed my check in due to some system issue at their side I reached about 40 min late but regardless he promised he will give a fulfilling experience just to find out that it was hardly anything which he made me try. For a cost of $311 approx. this is a very bad experience with very bad host. He might have his own thoughts but I know for a fact that anyone who wants to experience while not getting ripped, this is definitely not the tour!!
This food is disgusting and freezing cold I am now going to complain to the environmental health this food is not edible
Our guide Jonny Wu arrive promptly and took us to an amazing food tour in Shinjuku. We went to 3 great restaurants which we would not have found on our own, each one a bit different than the other. He was great company and very knowledgeable about the food and city and fun to be with!!
Your mileage may vary - this seems highly dependent on who you get as a guide. We read the good reviews and were excited by the first guide we were assigned, who reached out over a week ahead of time to help plan an itinerary. For whatever reason a new guide, Ian, was assigned. In short we were treated to a night of wandering aimlessly while he looked for places on Google Maps (none of which he had been to before, many of which were not open). Couldn't be bothered to learn the names of the 5 people in our group. Demonstrated no knowledge of the neighborhood we were eating in. Had no interest in sharing info about local food culture, history, traditions, etc. Was a wasted night, especially disappointing given the high cost. We reached out for a refund and the company took their sweet time but did offer a partial one, so there's something. Your experience may be wonderful like many reviews; just make sure you get the guide you are working with from the outset and cancel if a new one appears suddenly at the last minute.
Wonderful walking tour and lunch. Tsukiji market. Fukugawa Edo Museum. Kind a Ed thoughtful guide who customized the day. Wonderful to chat and learn new neighborhoods after many trips to Tokyo.
I loved this tour. We did this after 5 days in Toyko and still manage to see things we didn't see before. It was all about the food and it was awesome food and great company. We had a great time and would do it again.
I had a wonderful tour with Mari. She tailored the tour to my interests, showing me lots of local “treasures” I wouldn’t have found on my own. She was also good company and we had a lot of laughs. Definitely book with this company and ask for Mari.
Gabriel was fantastic. I loved my tour and saw parts of Tokyo that only a local could help me navigate. Definitely made my trip so much better AND he gave me some great recommendations to a local ramen spot to try later on my trip that turned out to be fantastic.
We had a wonderful evening with Chika, wandering the small alleys in Shibuya.. excellent yakitori and sake.
Our very customize food trip was Amazing thanks for our wonderful guide Karina. We communicated before tour via email, she listen to our preferences, she advise great new places, we had no idea about. She was very accommodating. We found out a lot about local life. Thank you Karina!!!
So, first let me say that our guide was very nice, but she was also fighting a cold, which probably isn't a good thing for a food tour. Then while she met us at the hotel, we then took a complicated metro/subway ride to get to the area of Tokyo for eating. We had many issues with those tickets, and at times, it almost had us cancel before we started. Once we started the actual food part, it was fun and we were tasting many different things. We did cut the tour short, and took a cab to the hotel, instead of trying to get back the way we came. Our guide did give us a partial refund, which we appreciated.
Surprised that our guide Mike was an American in Japan. Food was good.....make sure you come hungry. Definitely recommend it.
We had a perfect day with our guide Patrick. We biked all over Tokyo and visited tourist sites, quiet neighbourhoods and a water throwing festival. During the day we tried differet kind of food like onigiri from the basement of a shopping center for breakfast, takoyaki kushiyaki at the festival and the most amazing ochazuke from a small restaurant in a quiet street. Patrick was an fantastic guide and the idea to bike around was amazing.
Having been overwhelmed with so many options and underwhelmed with our higher end choices last time we were in Japan, I booked a food tour for my husband and myself with City Unscripted. About two weeks ahead, I filled out a detailed questionnaire about our interests and paid $225. I received a receipt and was told our guide would contact us several days before our tour. We did not hear back, so I sent an inquiry to City Unscripted as soon as we arrived in Japan. One day before our scheduled tour, I received an email from my guide - a foreign exchange student - who suggested we go to a Himalayan curry restaurant (not remotely what we said we were interested in eating). I wrote back and explained that we were looking for a Japanese food experience and hoping to try a wide variety of options including Piss Alley, which I understood had a lot of food stalls. My guide said she would try to research it. However, shortly thereafter she wrote back and cancelled. A few minutes later I received an email from City Unscripted stating that our guide could not accommodate us and, since it was high season, they could not provide another guide. On such short notice, we could not find another guide or even a dinner reservation anywhere we were interested in going. We wound up going to Piss Alley on our own and ate our way through (we may have missed the best spots, but it was entirely manageable without a guide). City Unscripted issued a refund and suggested we contact them next time we traveled to a city they serve (with a 15% discount). The offer of a future discount could not make up for the frenzy and stress of the poor communication, uninformed guide, or last minute cancellation. If you want a food tour, I suggest you go elsewhere or do it on your own.
Let me begin by saying the administrative staff for this company is excellent. They are fast to respond to complaints and really try to figure out what went wrong. They graciously refunded our money when they looked into our experience. Our guide lacked personality, enthusiasm and organizational skills. She spent the whole time looking at her cell phone for directions. The company promotes their service as seeing a city with a friend. That certainly was not the case. Considering this was a food experience we only went to one restaurant and she didn't do her research to find out what was open or how long the wait time would be. We are very experienced travelers and were hoping for more direction from our host. The disappointment of course is that when you have limited time in a city you want to maximize that time. Again, great company service but poor experience overall.
Our guide, Sergio, went above and beyond to give us a great tour. We definitely visited places and ate food we never would have found on our own. I'd have to say this was the best night of our trip.
Our tour guide Marin was extremely friendly and well-versed in getting around the Shinjuku and Shibuya area of Tokyo!! She met us promptly at the desired time and aided both me and my wife to any desired destination we wanted to visit. We initially made plans to eat specific foods, but we’re offered alternatives that were well within our budget and were more illusive than what we could have obtained ourselves. This made the experience feel much more wholesome than stumbling our way through communicating in restaurants where English menus were not available. Marin, being from another country, offered a well-versed explanation of the differences between Japanese, French, English, and Australian cuisine. We enjoyed speaking with her about her past experiences with traveling, the ways in which she became accustomed to eating and living in Japan. Bring your minds! Ask questions! Be interested in the culture you are immersed in. Part of doing these experiences is to explore how you interact and function in a foreign land. I would say that a part that was unfortunate, but not Marin’s fault, is that we chose a Sunday to do our food tour which caused some eating spaces to be closed earlier than expected. Again, not her fault! Just bad timing on our part. I would suggest doing a food tour with her 100%. She even stayed with us after her appointed time and showed us more spots to explore on our own accord. We took her out for a drink and more food after because we appreciated her kindness and wanted to get to know her even better! After, she even directed us to the JR railway, and showed us how to get home. This made us feel safe in an unfamiliar city, and we left feeling satisfied and smiling. Thank you Marin!!
Until now, my wife and I had always made our own way through various cities throughout the world and were hesitant to book a tour. We had already spent a few days in Tokyo but felt as though we were missing the city’s important nuances with our limited grasp of Japanese. Oh, are we glad we did! The guide was amazing, having lived in Tokyo for 20 years. We tried incredible food in places we hadn’t seen, even though we had walked right past. Our guide even helped us to plan the rest of our stay as we rode the metro, making the remainder of our visit even better! I can’t recommend this tour highly enough. Stop hesitating and just book, it’s great value and you won’t be disappointed. On the administrative side, the CityUnscripted team managed to find us a guide on very short notice and were very communicative.
Gerne wieder!
