Itinerary
Begin beside the Sumida River with the story of Japan’s isolation and opening to the world. Learn why Japan limited contact with the outside world for more than 200 years, why the Netherlands became its key European trading partner, and how the arrival of Commodore Perry changed the country’s course.
Get a clear introduction to Buddhism and Shinto, Japan’s two major religious traditions. This background will help you better understand the temples, shrines, and customs you encounter throughout the walk.
Look beyond one of Asakusa’s most famous landmarks. Compare Japanese and Western dragons and discover what their striking differences reveal about the cultures that created them.
Walk along one of Japan’s oldest shopping streets while discovering Buddhist symbolism and the fascinating journey of ukiyo-e woodblock prints from Japan to Europe, where they influenced Western artists.
Here, your guide reveals a surprising truth: people in Japan and the West shared remarkably similar ways of thinking 1,000 years ago.
At Tokyo’s oldest temple, discover how Buddhism is practiced in everyday Japanese life, from purification and incense to prayer. Ask questions and explore the religious and historical subjects that particularly interest your group.
Finish beside Senso-ji at this important Shinto shrine. Discover how Buddhism and Shinto have coexisted for centuries and why many Japanese people participate in both traditions without seeing them as contradictory.

Choco was a very nice guide with a lot good explanations! Thank you very much! She speaks fluently english.
This tour was both educational and lot of fun, and Kay was a great tour guide. She took us through various parts of Asakusa and we got to learn about the history of Asakusa and the Buddhist temple and Shinto shrine, while stopping here and there to take a photo, shop for souvenirs, or enjoy a snack.
Our guide Amy was very sweet. She was an englishteacher from Tokyo. It was informative and about the religion and shrine.
Informative tour with a guide who was very helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable. She spoke English well. Thank you!
Yasu was an amazing guide. He took the time to explain everything to us in a clear and concise manner. He showed us the ins and outs of the temples and was even kind enough to show us where the lucky charms were after pulling out a bad luck script. 1000 stars out of 10. Thank you Yasu.
Kay was a wonderful guide with deep knowledge of the area and excellent English language skills. A thoroughly enjoyable experience.
We took this tour on a rainy day and were fortunate to have Taka, an excellent guide. As we were the only participants this morning, Taka tailored the tour to our interests. He took us to some great locations to overview the area and provided useful information. He also identified a key interest we had and then located where we could go for that - which turned out to be exactly what we wanted. He was great!
I had a very enjoyable morning tour with guide Sue. Sue provided excellent information and stories of Asakusa. I even got a glimpse of Mt Fuji! The Senso-ji complex is beautiful and worth visiting. Sue provided details of some of the other buildings and was it easy to be on the tour.
Yuki was so great, I thoroughly enjoyed the tour! We also went around for longer than planned, but it was so amazing to properly experience Asakusa without any rush! Thank you again, Yuki San!
Our guide Choco was a terrific guide who knew the area and history very well and explained everything clearly in English, a language she enjoys learning about and using. Communication was excellent. Choco made our day in Asakusa perfect! Thank you Choco!
My wife and I both this trip for our first day in Tokyo and we absolutely loved it. Our guide, Keiko, was a sweet and lovely woman who did a wonderful job describing the Asakusa area from past to present as well adding her own personal experiences to the tour. 10/10 would recommend!
A great way to start our 1st day in Tokyo. Our tour guide, Machiko, was very knowledgeable and friendly. The tour is only 2 hours but we learned a lot of Asukusa and Edo history! Highly recommend!
Very interesting tour with Keiko ! She was friendly and answered our questions, she told us about the history of the places we visited. We were very happy to do this tour !
Our tour with the guide Sachi was excellent. She was knowledgeable and engaging. She kept my 13 year old son interested in the history of the temple and the neighbourhood. Sachi did a brilliant job with our group.
Kay did an excellent job. She provided us with a good experience and was very knowledgeable about Asakusa. She also provided ideas about other places to visit around Tokyo. Thank you for the experience
We had a lovely time exploring Asakusa with Yasu. He was very informative and had some interesting stories to share about the founding of the city. A definite plus was that he had headsets for all of us so we could hear him clearly over the noise and even when he wasn’t near. It is a very busy tourist destination and having Yasu to help navigate and show us the highlights was a huge help. All four of us including our teens really enjoyed the tour and the small group experience.
Great tour! Very friendly tour guide, good insights and fascinating! We really enjoyed the experience - thank you so much!
We really enjoyed the tour, it was interesting and we had a great time. Yasu was super nice has a lot of knowledge about the city, he answered all our questions. We highly recommend!!
Great tour - Yasu took many photos of us and shared much historic knowledge. Don’t start this tour hungry as you will walk by many nice smelling food stands 😅
We wanted to know more about the historical part of Tokyo, so we decided to join this tour. We are a family of 8 and our guide was Yasu San. We started from the Sumida River and then proceeded to the Asakusa district. Yasu San was very knowledgeable and informative. He spoke clearly and explained many things to us. We learnt a lot about Japan and the history of Tokyo. The tour was two hours long and it was just right for us. Very manageable pace and not too tiring. Highly recommended to join this tour.
Machiko was a very nice guide. She provided a warm introduction to the area with interesting stories. The focus was primarily on the tourist areas and the shrines, as well as a stop at the tourist center.
we had a wonderful tour of Asakusa and Senso-ji Temple. Our tour guide, Akiko, was so lovely and knowledgeable. She patiently explained traditions and history of the area. It was well worth having a guide. We were lucky, as it was only husband and I we along with one other gentleman. It was like a private tour. Highly recommend. Would be great even for a bigger group
I had a tour with Amy as my guide and it was a delight! She is so knowledgeable about the history of Tokyo and willing to answer any questions that come to mind. She even directed me on the best shop to buy a Japanese knife and where to have lunch after the tour, which was delicious. In short, she’s a wonderful teacher and this is the perfect tour for anyone interested in the history of Buddhism, Shintoism, and Asakusa.
We really enjoyed the tour, thank you so much for the bonus origami lesson at the end it really made our day!
Our guide Akiko did a good job. In a short time you will learn about Asakusa. You will visit a Buddhist temple and two Shinto shrines.
Yasu San was friendly and knowledgeable. He gave us a great tour of the temple and story of surrounding areas and buildings. Arigato gosaimasu!
Yasu was a great guide! He was very knowledgeable about the history and cultural importance of Asakusa and Senso-ji temple. I really enjoyed learning the differences between the Buddhist temple and the Shinto temple. He also had many great tips on where to go after the tour and his tip about Tokyo Skytree, which wasn’t on our list originally was so helpful. I would highly recommend!
Our guide Yasu was great to say the least. He was super knowledgeable about all history and modern information about our guide tour sights. Yasu adjusted his level of details about the Temple and sights to our family to make it interactive as much as possible with asking interesting questions about each monument/ temple on the tour. In the end of our 1/2 day tour he kindly showed us his favorite sushi and Kobe beef restaurants in Asakusa area. We would definitely enjoy his guided tour again and recommend him as the first choice. Thank you!
Yasu is a fantastic tour guide with alot of knowledge. He gave a comprehensive tour which highlighted all of the major attractions. It was a pleasure to spend time with yasu as he clearly was incredibly enthusiastic about his job. He also had a great knowledge of other things not just specific to the tour. Overall I was very happy with the experience and would highly recommend this tour.
Mizu-san was so knowledgeable, friendly, dedicated, and professional. I highly recommend him to everyone. Thank you so much!
I enjoyed the tour a lot, learned tons and met a very patient, polite and knowledgeable Japanese tour guide, Yasu. He has a smart way of engaging the audience by asking key questions about what we are seeing at s certain moment. That helps us relate our ideas to the real reason buildings or objects are the way they are or are used for. I recommend this tour to travellers who want to know about interesting facts about the Asakusa area.
Most memorable part was the luck reading. Remainder of tour was very informative and cultural. Only negative was there could’ve been more structure to the tour.
Our guide Sachi explained to us the history of Asakusa and Japan, very friendly and good English, a big thank you!
