This was a wonderful way to learn about Thessaloniki food, culture and history. As a first time visitor this tour gave me a much better understanding of the area. The tour guide was exceptional, friendly, professional and provided excellent insight to my visit. All the food was not only delicious but also a piece of the culture of the city. Highly recommend.

Perhaps one of the most authentic experiences any food lover could get in Thessaloniki is visiting the city’s historic open markets. The atmosphere, the people and the local delicacies will reward you!
Modiano is one of the most traditional markets of Thessaloniki. It is located in the heart of the city and it has been part of the Thessalonians’ life for about 80 years. Its construction started in 1922 and finished in 1930 by architect Eli Modiano. Coming from a renowned Jewish (Sephardic) family of Thessaloniki, Eli was the son of the banker Jacob (Yako) Modiano. He studied architecture in Paris, France and returned to Thessaloniki where he created some of the city’s most important buildings, including the Modiano Market.
Full of life, throughout the day, Athonos Square in the centre of the city is a place loved by, both Thessalonians and tourists alike. Here, food and nutrition plays the leading part. You’ll find spices, all types of tea, nuts, vegetables and fruits, fish, delicatessen products, as well as small boutiques with clothes, handmade accessories, and decoration items. Moreover, your attention will be instantly drawn to the smells of the delicious foods of the Square’s traditional taverns! You can enjoy them both at lunchtime and evening, accompanied occasionally by live greek music. Additionally, in case you want to get acquainted with the traditional side of Athonos Square, visit the picturesque small shops selling handmade wickerwork and small wooden furniture, made by the last remaining skilled craftsmen.
Louloudadika is a small area of the historic city center including the streets of Komninon, Frangon and Vas. Herakliou, which takes its name from the old outdoor florists that were there. Unfortunately only 4 continue to run today. In the ’50s there were 11 shops selling all sorts of flowers and their fame reached to the provincial cities.

Had an amazing tour led by guide Nikos. Immediately felt comfortable touring the city and learned so much about the food, history and culture! Come hungry. Like very hungry. I was so full by the end 🤣 nikos went above and beyond showing me the metro system and the history behind it!
A great combination of the flavors and tastes of Thessaloniki while learning about the historical context of the food and region. Our tour guide was friendly, accommodating, and very knowledgeable! Patiently answering our questions and allowing for a deviation or two as we walked and talked. Great experience!
We had a fantastic walking food tour of Thessaloniki ! Nikos was a very interesting, informative & funny host. We learned a lot about the history of the city & its food. The tour was at a gentle pace & the many food samples were delicious & very filing ! The highlight was the visit to the markets. We would highly recommend this tour !
The tour was very good with lots of information and conversation. The two hours was just about right and the distance not to long on what was a hot day. We’ll be going back to many of the places we visited.
Nico was an amazing guide. This tour included plenty of local foods as well as a great history of the area and tour of the city. It felt like spending the afternoon with a friend. Would highly recommend this tour.
Very informative tour on Greek history and modern culture, Thessaloniki and of course accompanied by delicious street food.
Enjoyed seeing the old and new markets and of course, eating food! Great way to explore Thessaloniki on foot with a local guide.
Great personal service with good knowledge of history and culture. Lots of small tastings rather than big meals. Good value!
Our guide Niksos really did his homework checking to make sure he took us to all fresh, handmade bakeries and restaurants and every dish we sampled was top notch! Fresh filo dough rolled by hand for the spanikopita, the bougata was so yummy and every other sweet treat was amazing. Greek coffee was very interesting - not sure if I’ll will give up my morning Nespresso for it but enjoyed it just the same. Very enjoyable tour - highly recommend.
Nikos was a wonderful guide and a local! We met at the White Castle and I was fortunate to be the only person on the tour. We started off with Coffee and Tea and continued to pasties and small samplings – Nikos planned the tour off great as we were able to walk around Thessaloniki and view the sites and listen to the history of the city. When stopping, we had a nice table and were able to converse and enjoy the food. We ended towards a wonderful Turkish bath building and close to a lovely open market where we were able to sample local fruits and nuts. I highly recommend this excursion as it is 2 hour tour and really enjoyable to walk with a guide. It was a great break from taking all day excursions and really a nice way to end my visit with the city. Thank you Nikos!
The tour guide was very friendly and the food was delicious. Great experience, I can highly recommend!
Great guide Nikolas …. Great conversation … yummy selection of treats of the region and markets of the wonderful city
This wasn’t really treated as a food tour, it was treated as a market tour. We were asked what we wanted to do many times- I would much rather have a well thought out agenda. I don’t want to design my own tour in a city I don’t know. Overpriced for what you get- 1.5 hrs, a few food tastings.
We had a really great, varied and delicious food tour. We also learned about backgrounds of Thessaloniki and the tour guide was very nice and pleasant.
