The food tour was fantastic - Sophie was an amazing and knowledgeable guide, the locations were unique and varied, and the food high quality and delicious. Sophie explained the food culture, interesting things about current and historical Thessaloniki and Greece, and about Greek life. It was like chatting with a friend. In addition, Salty Soil company was exceptional. After another company cancelled on me right before my tour as they only had one booking, even though I had booked and paid 2 months prior (I.e., Culinary Backstreets- be wary of booking with them) I contacted Salty Soil. Less than 48 hours before I wanted to do a tour , they responded promptly to my text messages despite it being late one evening, arranged a tour for me in that same evening, and were willing to do the tour with just one person. Definitely a five star company!
Sofia was a really excellent guide, knew all the best local and hidden food places and could tell os a lot about the City and the people who live in Thessaloniki.
We so enjoyed both our tour and cultural exchange with Bill! The tastings were filling and delicious. There were many moments shared and remembered from the tour. Thank you
A fantastic walk and talk with Pangelis. Tasted beautiful Greek delights and learned so much about the city. Thank yoi
Pantelis went out of his way to curate the experience for me. The pace was good, his knowledge was excellent and general information regarding Thessaloniki was valuable.
Not listed as given. SO much better. Hop on Hop off wanted me to leave the city. Tour made me want to stay for a week.
This was such a great tour! We got to experience some yummy treats Thessaloniki is known for and had such a knowledgeable guide that gave us great insight into the city and Greek life. Definitely recommend! It felt like visiting a friend
We were gifted this tour as a birthday present and I'm so glad we were. The lovely and insightful Pantelis led us through so many great spots in the city, and it really felt like we got to know the vibe of the local culture. Even in the brutal heat, we still had a great time walking around the city.
Pantelis was very knowledgeable about the history of Thessaloniki. He took us to several nice locations to taste local foods and coffee. He was sympathetic to the heat of the day and tried to keep us in the shade while he talked.
Our guide Pantelis was the BEST! We had such a great time and this guide was so generous with is stories, historical facts, knowledge of the food we had and he took us to amazing places with good service and hospitality! We tasted the best desert ever... Trigona Panoramatos. You made this a day we won't forget!

We loved this tour! Our small group of 4 learned all about Greek food and culture while walking around the city. Highlights includes Bougasta (Greek breakfast pastry) with sweet and savory fillings and soutzoukakia (spiced fried meatballs with lamb and beef).
My guide, Pantelis was a great guy, very knowledgeable about street food, local and the regional area. I was interested in not just the street food but also the local history and culture. Pantelis very easily handled my questions and pointed out many interesting historical area and gave me the cultural perspective of the sites, their restoration and in some cases why they weren’t restored. The food was excellent, especially since I now have had hotel food and other tourist presented meals. Pantelis was very generous with his time to show me around. I should also say that my flight was delayed and Pantelis adjusted the time of the tour to accommodate since it was a solo tour.
Sophie was an amazing tour guide. I had lots of laughs with her. She was very knowledgeable and I liked the spots she took us toand I enjoyed the food we tasted. I had a fantastic time.
This was a great tour! Pantelis is the kind of guide who instantly makes you feel comfortable. While my tour ended up being essentially an private tour, even if the group were larger, I’m sure he’d still make it feel completely personal and bespoke. It was the perfect way way to get oriented in the city while trying truly authentic Greek food. Nothing felt touristy or rushed. Later that night, when I mentioned the places we visited / food we ate to local Greek friends, they all agreed it sounded exactly like how they grew up eating! If you want an authentic and fun introduction to the city that feels more like hanging out with a friend than being on a tour, I highly recommend this one!
It was a great way to see different parts of the city and eat delicious food. Our tour guide, Sophie, was kind, funny, intellectual and felt like a friend.
Our guide was Pantelis and we simply could not have asked for more. He was friendly and welcoming and he brought the city to life with his knowledge of the past and present, both of Thessaloniki and of Greece itself. The food was delicious and we visited places we would never have known. He tailored all the information to our individual interests and clearly has a broad general knowledge of history , politics, architecture and social norms . He also gave us tips on where to go for meals etc near to where we were staying . We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and would highly recommend it . Beverley
When you are in Thessaloniki, you simply must take the street food to her with Sophia. She is a fabulous host. Who knows everything about the Thessaloniki. Most importantly, she knows where to get the best bougatsa, koulouri, and trigano! At the end of the tour we had a traditional meal of souvlaki and gyro! Thank you, Sofia -
Our tour was very good. Our guide, Sophia, was smart, fun and very knowledgable about the region. The route was mostly flat but there was a fair amount of walking involved. Some of the streets were cobblestone and therefore, uneven so caution was taken. All in all, it was a great experience.
We'd like to thank Pantelis our tour guide for his great company. He was very informative, positive and energetic. This is not only a great tour to taste some good food in Thesaloniki but to learn some history as well. Thank you.
Our guide Sophie was amazing. Truly enjoyed the walk, the info and the food choices she made. Not to be missed.
This tour was not only about the food but also about the history and culture of Thessaloniki. It was a fun tour with great food and lots of information.
The Street food tour was GREAT! He was able to combine food and history, which was perfect for our day in Thessaloniki! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
I had a delightful three hours with Ali’s We explored areas that I would never have gone to normally and tasted the best of the best food I also learned a lot about the city which I wasn’t expecting and Akis Was kind enough to take me to a shop where I could buy The best (Tasting and priced) Turkish delight for my daughter
A must do in Thessaloniki. The hours my daughter and I spent were memorable. Ms. Anastasia was very generous in explaining whatever we asked about and we had a good amount of knowledge about the city, it's history and traditions. She has a very nice character. The places we went to and the food we had were very enjoyable!! We became to know and tried several new things and greek traditions.
I had a private tour with Anatasia. It was a lovely way to learn about city & food, as well as try a few treats along the way. She was very knowledgeable. Highly recommend.
The food tour was fun and full of information and great food which we would have never experienced without the incredible guide. Sophie was knowledgeable about local cuisine and local history. My daughter and I both thoroughly enjoyed the tour and would recommend it as a great way to experience the food of Thessaloniki. Thank you.
We thoroughly enjoyed this tour of the city, Sophie was a wonderful guide, very knowledgable about the history of the city, past and modern culture and architecture. A wonderful way to see and taste your way around the city!
Sophie was absolutely amazing on this tour. I was lucky enough to be the only one who booked so she was able to make it personal to me; which I appreciated. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for the best eats in the city while also getting an understanding of the history and culture.
Sophie was wonderful. There’s nothing like walking the streets with a local and being taken to tried and true cafes and bakeries. We were able to try so many different foods, frappe, we would never have found on our own. We walked thru several different open air bazaars, some with goods some with fresh food-fish, fruit, spices, teas. Would highly recommend if you’re in Thessaloniki! Can’t go wrong.
Sophia was wonderful, she took us to hidden gems and gave us a political and historical tour through a feminist lense as well.fascinating. And the food at every stop was perfection.
Sophie was an excellent tour guide, and i had a great time despite being the only person on the tour! She expertly navigated us through the streets of Thessaloniki to some of the tasiest spots in town. She explained the multiple cultural influences in the city on the food, markets, and architecture, and gave some background on the different neighborhoods in the city. I did this tour on the tail end of my trip, but it would be a great way to start your trip off and learn the lay of the city. Obviously the food was amazing, you get to try ~5 local specialties (including coffee) which are all so tasty. I was so full that I didn't need to eat anything for the rest of the day! Don't eat anything before this tour, and you're guaranteed to have a great time.
The opportunity to learn both about the culture and food of Thessaloniki was wonderful. Leo was incredibly knowledgeable about his home city and the food experiences were authentic and delicious. Highly recommend.
This food tour was really amazing. I don’t ever do food tours and Sophie was really great. I was lucky on this day to have just me on the tour and was able to ask so many questions, which Sophie was a wealth of knowledge. There was so much I did not know. The food, the people, the guide, just amazing. I would not have found these places or foods if I didn’t do this tour. Thanks Sophie. It made the world of difference.
We had a great time sampling the food of Thessaloniki and finding out more about the city with Akis. The tour was interesting and enjoyable and the food was delicious. Highly recommended.
This tour is like walking around in Thessaloniki with a friend who knows the best places to buy food and can tell you everything you want to know about the city. I am very happy that I booked this tour and I recommend it to everybody. The only thing to keep in mind is to arrive hungry!!! Thank you very much for the insightful tour and all the excellent food! I even went back to some of the shops to bring home souvenirs:)
Sophia was a great host, we Enjoyed the food and conversation while walking around the beautiful city
Was an awesome experience. Leo was a super cool guide. We learned a ton about architecture and the history of Thessaloniki. We tried a bunch of different foods with some extras for later. We’ve done a lot of food tours and this one we were at long about the whole next day.
We booked 2 tours and both were amazing. The Street Food Tour with Akis was filled with wonderful conversations around the history, culture, and day to day life in Thessaloniki while eating the delicious local foods of Greece. Akis is very knowledgeable and a treat to be with. We also visited Meteora with Pascalis, who is also very knowledgeable of the history of the monasteries. He is a wonderful guide providing lots of information and colorful conversations along the way to Meteora. I highly recommend you pick Salty Soil for any of your tour needs. They are the BEST.
They don't understand how to deal with cruise passengers. We repeatedly told the guide the when the cruise was leaving. They kept saying it was ok. At the end we ended up running back to the port and had to miss the last stop and couldn't finish the 2nd to last. The guide spend way too much time walking around for nothing. He brought us to stores, we stood in front and he talked about how amazing it is, then walked on. In the end, we ate at standard places, nothing different and ignored the more unique places of Thessaloniki.
An enjoyable way to learn about the city’s history and delicious cuisine. Sophie was wonderful and very knowledgeable. As a solo traveler, I was happy to have her taking me to places I would never know about on my own. A fun, memorable day! Great food, too! Highly recommend!
This tour was amazing! Akis was our guide - he was punctual, so knowledgeable, kind, friendly and very easy to talk to. It didn’t take long before he felt like an old friend. My Mom and I tried Greek street food for the first time and it was excellent! He patiently answered all of our questions and gave us tips on how to navigate the city. We highly recommend this incredible experience- make sure you ask for Akis! :)
We had an obsolutely wonderful experience with Sophia on our food tour. Obviously the places she took has had amazing food, but she was a great person to spend a day with. Highly educated and engaging. Wed gladly do another tour with her when we go back to Thessaloniki. 100% recommend
I would have given this a 5 star but who ever sorts the booking and sends out the met up details didn’t give us or others in the group the correct meeting point. We where give a post code of a very long road. I had to call and get the meeting point, which turned out to be the harbour entrance. The tour it’s self was very relaxed and a enjoyable few hours, our guide was very knowledgeable about the food and the city. As we walked she told us so much we didn’t know about the city and then stopping for local food and drinks.
We regularly go on city food tours, to get our bearings, learn about the history and cultures of the country/town and of course taste their lovely food. Sophie, our guide, was exceptional. Wonderfully knowledgeable with almost perfect English. As a small group (she has a max of 5) we sampled foods, visited cafes, markets galore and learnt so much about Thessaloniki and Greece in general. I cannot recommend this tour highly enough. Well worth every penny.
We were surprised to be only two of us, my wife and I, and not a big group. Sophie takes only very small groups and it adds so much added value ! Actually, she knows a lot about history of Thessaloniki and Greece, but it is not what we retain first. Talks were rapidly oriented to the actual situation of Greece, her way of living and her feelings about her surrounding. This interaction was very much appreciated and if food was very good, it is more the places where we had it that brought us a different view of this town. We had a very ggod time and the chance to talk with a local person was so helpful to understand what is going on. Thank you Sophie and all the best to you !
This was a wonderful tour and Sophie our guide was excellent and extremely knowledgeable . We went to places that we'd probably never discovered and tried food we would never had ordered ..highly recommend this tour .. Only downside that not enough information given about the meeting point so to the person who organises this, please be more specific as to where you meet..
Firstly, the instructions for meeting were totally inadequate. Although I arrived at Loforos Nikis an hour ahead there was no sign as to the meeting point. I phoned but there was only an answerphone machine. After the start time of 10am I received a call asking me if I was doing the tour? I was told that a SMS had been sent twice but had not been received. If there is no confirmation of receipt then assume the message has not got through!. I did finally meet up with the group after pedaling like crazy back to a place I'd been twice before that morning. Sophia, the guide, looked rather cross at me and gave me no apology even though the other people on the tour had had difficulty finding the meeting point. After a while, Sophia warmed up and i enjoyed her company throughout the tour. She had a great sense of humour. Her knowledge of food was limited and it might have been helpful if she had asked us (only 3 of us) what kind of food we liked so that she could have ordered things according to our preferences. Overall, I enjoyed the tour despite the early stress.
We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Sophie. She showed us many interesting districts and we shared food experiences. One hint for people taking this tour...don't eat breakfast beforehand!
