Meteora Experience: Private Day Trip From Thessaloniki

Our driver/tour guide Vasilis did a fantastic job. Picked us up at the hotel and took us up to Meteora. Absolutely a must see! The visit included 3 monasteries and he took us to a place for lunch after. Be prepared to climb some steep steps to get into the monasteries. It was raining in Thessaloniki when we left and returned, but the weather in Meteora was quite nice and sunny at times. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with our driver Vasilis. I would definitely recommend friends to ask for him.

After we booked this tour requesting and asking the operator to provide a licensed guide, did we realize the tour was provided by iGoHellas, the company that we had booked the Mt Olympus & Dion tour (see our review). Again, this tour was hosted by Vasilis our wonderful driver. As this was our second day with Vasilis, he was our new friend. For this tour, we had Athina as our licensed guide and she was exceptional. The Meteora monasteries are incredible and their location on top of the mountainous outcrops is stunning. As it was a busy beautiful Sunday on our tour, Athina strategically selected our stops with museums to give as a fascinating history of monasteries in Greece and point out the amazing art and how the art communicated the early Christian development. We highly recommend adding a licensed guide for this tour. Vasilis communicated well with us, was prompt (early) to pick us up and now is a good friend.

The van was clean and the perfect size for our group of four. Our driver, Antonis, was friendly and personable, bringing humour to the conversation throughout the trip. He was extremely knowledgeable about the areas we visited and clearly took great pride in sharing his Greek heritage with us. At every photo stop and monastery visit, he demonstrated an amazing ability to find parking, even in very crowded areas. To help us make the most of our time, he also pre-purchased our monastery entry tickets, making entry much quicker and easier. For lunch, he took us to a wonderful, reasonably priced Greek restaurant serving delicious local food and homemade baklava. It was the best baklava we had ever tasted! One of the unexpected highlights was discovering that our driver was also an accomplished Greek folk musician. He shared his musical talents with us, entertaining us with his excellent performances and adding a truly special dimension to the experience. His warmth, humour, and willingness to share his culture made our visit to Meteora feel more like a family outing than just another organized excursion. Our only suggestion for improvement would be to equip the van with a microphone or sound system, as it was difficult to hear him speaking while driving. Overall, it was a very enjoyable and memorable experience. We appreciated his knowledge, hospitality, and personal touches, and would happily recommend this tour to others!

Highly recommended! We had an absolutely amazing tour thanks to Leo. He was incredibly professional, patient, and drove very safely throughout the whole trip. Beyond being a great driver, Leo was friendly, knowledgeable, and made sure we felt comfortable and well taken care of the entire time. Absolutely wonderful experience! First international trip for myself, 10/10. Amazing trip, great tour guide and he made it an absolute blast of a trip! Very fun time, it was better than I expected. The tour guide showed us all the monasteries, all of the history, and made us feel very welcomed during the trip. I would highly recommend this to someone looking for a tour guide for the Monasteries. It was amazing!

We did the day trip to Meteora with Antonis. He was very friendly and provided great information during our drive. He also helped us grab some coffee on the way and proceed a great lunch restaurant recommendation on our way back to Thessaloniki. Would recommend.

Our tour guide, Vasilis, was right on time, kept the car at a comfortable temperature for us, navigated the narrow roadways with precision, parked in congested areas with ease. We felt very safe with him at the helm. He gave us ample time to explore, asked if we wanted to stop for a stretch break and/or have pictures taken at a scenic location. So glad we booked this private tour with Vasilis. It was worth the money as he dropped us off as close to the monasteries as possible and picked us up at the dedicated time. This saved walking extra distance in the heat! The stops were breath taking! So glad I saw these stunning sights!

A very comfortable way to experience Meteora’s other-worldly monasteries. Vassilis was a helpful and confident driver, and made sure we could experience 3 different monasteries and stop wherever we liked to take photos. The taverna lunch was delicious too! This is more like a luxury transfer than a guided tour, so it’s worth reading up about the monasteries before you go.

We had a wonderful day. Our driver was great. He was very thoughtful and a joy to speak with. He was passionate and very knowledgeable adding to the experience . We also had a guide that did a good job of providing narrative of the monasteries. Both the setting of the monasteries and the facilities themselves are inspiring. It is a true wonder to ponder the history and the life of the monks.

Our full day tour to Meteora from Thessaloniki was absolutely wonderful from start to finish. Our day started with an on time pick up from the Electra Palace hotel in downtown Thessaloniki. Our driver, Antonis Pouliasis, who speaks excellent English, greeted us warmly and welcomed us into his spacious and comfortable Mercedes van. During our drive to Meteora, he informed of history and geography of the area and pointing out areas of interest along the way. He made stops for photo ops and bathroom and snack breaks along the way. Once we arrived in Meteora, he personally guided us through two of the most significant and beautiful monestaries: St. Stephen’s and the great Meteoron Monestary. He shared insights throughout each tour. After many photo ops, he dove us to a tasty lunch spot in nearby Kalabaka before we headed back to Thessaloniki using a different but scenic route from which we could view Mount Olympus from the other side. We strongly recommend Antonis as a driver and a tour guide. He made our tour comfortable, informative and memorable.

The Monasteries at Meteora are something to be experienced in person. I don’t think photographs can capture the splendor. Our driver, Antonis made the trip even more memorable. I highly recommend.

Meteora is truly a wonder to behold! The 3 hour drove one way was absolutely worth it for this once in a lifetime experience of visiting ancient monasteries built on tall rock formations.

It was a wonderful heavenly experience. Meteora was amazing and spectacular and definitely a must see. Our private tour with Dimitri as our driver - he was fun and a skilled driver. He even took us to his favorite spot for late lunch early dinner and food was outstanding. The car write was comfortable as expected in a Mercedes Benz.

Today we travelled ~170 km SW to Meteora. It is world famous for its six Eastern Orthodox monasteries that are perched atop gigantic rock pillars in the mountains. The monasteries are world heritage listed; and are absolutely amazing…. certainly a “must see”. We visited three, the last being a monastery for Nuns. All have been around for some hundreds of years; and it is incredible to imagine that they were built so long ago. There is a very strict dress code to enter (we came prepared) and some of the monasteries are REALLY hard work to get to. Lots of steps; Lots of rests; Lots of sweat … but we made it. On the way home we stopped at a Greek Taverna, located at the foot of the mountains. Very authentic. Our driver (Bill) was fantastic. Very courteous, knowledgable, friendly and punctual. He was terrific.

Astonishing scenery and architecture, lovely monasteries, and a friendly guide who was very accommodating. I’m glad we splurged on adding the licensed guide.

Great day visiting 3 monasteries with private driver and a licensed tour guide. Good communication from booking and throughout trip. Glad we added a tour guide. Dropped off close to sites and able to see a lot in one day with “Johnny” or Ionios. Good plan, amazing views, attentive to each person’s needs and able to answer both tourist and Greek friends questions. Highly recommend

We had a great tour to Meteora with IgoHellas. Our driver Demitri and tour guide John were both wonderful. John was knowledgeable, friendly, kind, and as a bonus, a great photographer! We were a multigenerational group of 3 adults and 1 toddler and they were very accommodating and we all had a great time. They planned the day perfectly and we were able to visit 3 monasteries that our group enjoyed and were some of the more accessible ones because of our toddler. After the monasteries, they took us to a great local cafe and we had a delicious traditional Greek lunch. IgoHellas was great to work with beforehand with planning and aaccommodating some specific requests that we had. They were quick to respond both by email and WhatsApp with any and all questions I had making international travel planning very smooth. Overall we had an amazing experience and highly recommend this tour and company to make the trip to Meteora memorable and easy!

Our tour guide was wonderful! The photos we took were amazing! Lunch was spectacular. I felt like we definitely got more than we paid for and was really glad we went with a private tour over a tour bus.

Amazing tour of Meteora with Stella! Prompt pickup and smooth ride to Meteora. We had time to explore 3 monasteries and got lunch before driving back to Thessaloniki. It was ~3 hours drive each way, but the sights of Meteora are definitely worth it! Highly recommend!

Our driver and guide were wonderful! We had a team building break in Thessaloniki for a few days and the day we went to Meteora was the highlight of our 5 day trip to Greece!

The monasteries were absolutely amazing. Well worth the 6 hours of driving or so roundtrip. My guide dimitris was knowledgeable, very attentive to my desires, and did a great job getting me back to ship on time. He also took me to a great lunch place. Very possible to take this trip if you take a cruise...be the first few people off, I was the second person off the boat, and it's worth the drive. Took some amazing pics

Absolutely amazing. The trip was perfectly planned and the team was very flexible with our abilities. Stalla and our driver were fantastic. They took us to the best highlights and adapted when we could not visit all the monasteries. The team and trip were wonderful. We could not have asked for a better day. Highly recommend this trip.

We were a family group of 9 with 5 children so we decided to take the private tour option. That is very convenient, we were able to make a stop on our travels, decide which monastery to visit and have lunch in a nice restaurant. iGoHellas was able to organise a private French speaking guide for us and that was perfect for our children. Konstantin the guide was very flexible and shared interesting stories on our way and in the monasteries. Our driver (Lefteris? not sure about spelling) was on time just in front of our apartment for our early departure, drove safely and he also had plenty of cooled water bottles... which were really appreciated as the temperature was really high. Strongly recommend that private day trip !

We had such a great day, despite the intense heat. Nikos was a wonderful guide who was knowledgeable and friendly and made the drive enjoyable.

Meteora is a beautiful UNESCO heritage site. We took a private tour and opted to only go in to 2 of the 4 monasteries offered on the trip because of the extensive stairways required to get to them. But our wonderful driver George took us to several spectacular scenic viewpoints so we felt like we got a real sense of the area. Wonderful trip made possible by an excellent driver.

Our driver George was wonderful. It is a long and windy road, but he was a superb driver and great with us and adding such info for us. He was absolutely excellent. Meteora is wonderful , but do read about it first and don't go if you have the ability to climb steps

We choose this private tour because we travelled with 12yr old child,and wanted to go with our own relaxed pace. It was really worth of it! We could spend enough time for each monasteries and plenty time to take pictures with incredible scenery.(probably it is impossible when you are in the group tour) Moreover,George was a professional guide/driver who drove all the way safe and very smoothly- he organized our schedule as we wished to do,then every thing went so perfect and we had a truly memorable day! I can fully recommend this tour!

This tour was incredible. Photos don’t do it justice. George was the absolute best driver and tour guide. I highly recommend this tour. A word of advice to the women…make sure you wear a skirt below the knee and a shirt with sleeves. We were able to purchase a long scarf at the first monastery to wrap around like a skirt, but just so you’re aware. I highly recommend stopping at a bathroom prior to arriving at the monasteries as the facilities don’t resemble the American toilets and this may be an issue based on who you’re traveling with. Other than that, best way to see Greece in a short amount of time!
