Itinerary
Embark on a journey to Pella with Ammon Express at 8:00 from Aristotelous Square & Egnatia Street (at the white Statue of Venizelos). The distance of 50km takes about 45 minutes to reach. Once in Pella, discover the new and modern museum, as well as the archaeological site boasting unique mosaics. Delight in the "Abduction of Helen" and "Amazonomachy" mosaics in the ancient market, and see artifacts from the daily lives of the people that illustrate the lifestyle during ancient times.
Next, we reach Vergina where we visit the Museum of the Royal Tombs of Aigai, situated in the borders of the village. The characteristic Golden Larnax (funerary casket), an urn with the cremated remains of Phillip II is marked with a 16-rayed sun, the symbol of Macedonia. The Sun of Vergina (or Star of Vergina), which is characteristic symbol of the Argead Dynasty (of the King Phillip II and Alexander the Great) was found together with the excavations that brought back to light his father’s Royal Tomb. 4 of the sun rays represent of the 4 classical elements and the other 12 sun rays represent the 12 Olympian Gods. Admire the golden oak wreath that Phillip II had during his funeral pyre, military armors. Later, we enjoy our lunch break in a restaurant with greek traditional flavours. Last stop before our departure is at the grand New Museum of Aigai, hosting findings and artifacts unearthed from the soil of the old capital;

The tour guide, Evangelia, was very knowledgeable about not only the sites we visited but also about Thessaloniki and other archaeological sites. She gave us plenty of information and at the sites and museums we did on our own which I found better as we went at our pace.
Two museums and two archaeological sites in 8.5 hours interesting and was good value. Guide was helpful and reasonably informative. Both guide and driver dealt tactfully with late-returners to coach and kept to time overall despite transgressions. Would recommend to those interested in early Greek archaeology.
Beautiful antiquities, well displayed with excellent interpretive description. Comfortable bus, driving and knowledgeable guide
The tour was very well organized. The guide explained very well the history and also gave info about the modern days. She also gave us tips for what was important to see in each stops. A very good day to understand a bit more about Macedonia.
Great experience thanks to the very nice, friendly and competent tourgide Eleni, who knows everything about macedinian history and generally about the region. Good driver as well.
Excellent day trip . Informative guide : we visited Vergina first then Pella reversing the itinerary to avoid bottlenecks caused by anticipated roadworks on the return which worked very well ; just a 45 minute journey back from Pella . Plenty of time to view everything without being rushed : on this Ammon trip thankfully there was no unnecessary "stocking filler" ie wasted time swimming or restaurants ...Just the history and culture which for me is perfect. 16 on the trip . Recommended.
The pacing of this tour is excellent. The archeological sites and museums are interesting but would be enhanced if any pamphlet were available or if the guide provided an on-site tour rather than being self guided. The selected lunch taverna served us efficiently. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. The best part of the tour was our guide, Evangeline. She was knowledgeable, easy to understand and provided a regular commentary of the scheduled sites and the history of Northern Greece.
Very nice experience. Tour guide was very knowledgeable. Day went by smoothly. Enough time to visit all locations.
It was a well organised tour with a knowledgeable and personable guide and a very good driver. We had a great day seeing some incredible archaeological sites and amazing museums, would do it again if I could! Thank you
Pleasant day out. Nice and relaxing. Everything went to schedule. Didn’t spend hours in one place. Was all very interesting The tombs were fascinating
The trip to Vergina was enjoyable as it was in formative. Stelios , our guide, provided Judy’s with much information but was ready to provide further when asked. The sites themselves were amazing!
It was amazing experience. Eva was a fantastic tour guide. An expert in her field, friendly, and very knowledgeable.
This was a wonderful tour with some incredible museums and so many amazing artifacts to see. Eva was a fantastic guide—she was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and made the experience even more enjoyable with all the interesting information she shared. I'd highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in history and culture!
Fantastic tour — very well organised, with timings that felt just right for each site and attraction. Our guide was genuinely insightful and shared interesting, useful information throughout the day. Nothing felt rushed, and we had ample time to enjoy each stop. We chose not to have lunch at the designated restaurant and instead grabbed a quick bite, which allowed us extra time at the Royal Tombs — something we really appreciated. Meeting points and times were always clear, making the whole experience smooth and stress‑free. A well‑run tour that made the day both enjoyable and memorable, definitely for those interested in history- a must go!
Very well organized Trip with exzellent tour guided.
This was a well organized tour. Our tour guide Eva was amazing. She provided a lot of details on the sites we were visiting. Highly recommend to everyone.
Absolutely stunning collection of artifacts along this tour. We loved every location more and more. The museum at Aigai is a jaw dropping experience! Admission to the museums was more than reasonably priced, the museums almost feel like a private experience, the lunch stop was delicious and the history from our tour guide made the drive go by quick! Can’t recommend this tour enough!
The in depth knowledge of guide ( him being an archaeologist) was very informative and appreciated. Seeing King Phillips belongings in person is well worth it. Overall the trip was excellent !
You will have plenty of time to enjoy the sights. The guide was outstanding: knowledgeable, articulate and able to present the information in a very interesting way.
The highlight is the archaeological site of Vergina. Regrettably the site of Pella was overgrown with long grass and the outline of the ruins often not discernible.
The experience was very good made much better by the fact that we had the luck to go on the one day of the year that all entrance fees were free. The tomb of Philip 2 of Macedonia was the highlight of the trip. Anybody that is at all interested in history should see where the whole story of Philip and his son started out. All this was explained very well by a wonderful guide.
The trip did not cover guided tours of the archeological site as well as the museum. Nor did it cover entrance tickets. If you have visited any other archeological site in Egypt or Turkey, you may easily skip this.
Basically it’s a fantastic day trip for those who love history but in this case, it more about Archaeological finds. The museum, recently opened is simply incredible. I learned so much about the Macedonian kingdoms. The exhibits and recovered marble are beautiful. The building is light filled! I would like to thank Eva, for conducting a great tour, so friendly! Further to this, as a qualified archeologist, she is very knowledgeable and informative and added so much to the trip.
You have to have a deep interest and knowledge of archaeology to fully appreciate this tour, although you’ll certainly learn a lot . Van was old and dirty and older guests really struggled to get in and out.
It was good experience, particularly the Driver Vasilis was amazing, very knowledgeable, polite and helpful. He kept us informed and assisted us with purchase of museum tickets and provided guidance to make our tour enjoyable. I’d highly recommend vasilis, a credit to your company.
Our guide was excellent! I don’t recall his name sorry. He is an archeologist as well and really great with history and facts of our tours. He made the tour go fast. Too fast!
excellent trip, it was highly organized , the guide knowledge was excellent and everything was great . it was a nice experience , a lot of information and we shave seen a lot. it is highly recommended to enjoy your time
Our guide Stellios was very professional, providing excellent information throughout the day. Wonderful day, the museums were all amazing & unique in their way, with jaw-dropping displays, videos and experiences. Also, our lunch at the restaurant was so yummy! Well organised & not to be missed!
Enjoyable day out with a knowledgeable guide who provided considerable commentary on the history of Macedonia, the dynasties, Phillip the Second and Alexander the Great. Handy meeting location in Thessaloniki and the sites and museums in Pella and Vergine were worth visiting.
On time. Stellios provided pertinent info and historical facts professionally and personably. Would recommend to everyone.
The guide was a lovely lady called Eva and she was very informative. The tour was excellent except for we did not get to see all the ruins of Agai. The tombs were amazing but I would have loved to have seen the palace and theatre of Agai aswell. The museums were excellent. On the whole extremely well organised and would recommend.
Amazing glimpse into Macedonian history and the unique opportunity to se one of the very few untouched ancient royal graves
Fabulous! Not nearly the crowds that expected, so I got to enjoy the archeological site at Pella and the royal tombs delightfully uncrushed. Not quite enough time at the archeological site, but a delightful itinerary, all five stops were so worth it and in the end I wouldn't change anything. Just had to keep moving is all! Konstantina was so friendly and well-informed. Highly recommend!
The trip was well organised, ran punctually and escorted by a knowledgeable and pleasant guide. The museums were excellent
It was all really nice and well-organized, guide was competent, bus was very clean and overall it was a very positive experience.
A memorable day! The guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the area, the museums, especially the new one in Vergina, were stunning and the Royal Tombs were definitely the highlight!
Great day out. Personable and knowledgeable guide in Stelio. We thoroughly enjoyed the day and would recommend it to anyone interested in the fascinating history of classical Macedonia / Classical Greece
I really enjoyed visiting the archeological site & the museums. The royal tombs which was the last stop was my favorite. My only problem was that I like to read everything at the site & museums and was always running out of time. (Normal people get through much faster.) I also liked that we were left to explore on our own. Note that "lunch" was at the end at about 3pm.
The site of Pella is amazing to the planning layout of the whole ancient city, centred on the Main Agora square, The House of Dionysus, was amazing to see with some columns still in place. It was interesting to see the wells in the Agora area had water in them about 4 m down. The Mosaics on site and in the museums are amazing. The Archaeological Museum in the nearby town has many great exhibits, coins, helmets, vases, figurines, jewellery. The Great Tumulus at Vergina -Tombs of Phillip II and others are a must see.
Outstanding archeological sites and museums related to Macedonia. Provides an interesting contrast to early civilizations of southern Greece and islands
Great sites, highlights the museum at Pella and tombs and exhibits at Aigai/Bergina. But palace at Aigai worth the schlep up the track!
Great day, the museums were amazing. I liked that we were given free time at the places visited which allowed the time to explore at your own pace.
Eva (guide) and Tomas (driver) were great hosts on this history filled trip. A relaxing drive through the countryside brought us to museums, some of which were almost overwhelming in the amount of artifacts and information. Eva is vey knowledgeable and excellent in giving historical information and answering questions. It was an enjoyable way to spend time immersed in the history of the region.
A thoroughly enjoyable and informative day trip to Pella and Vergina with Eleni and Dimitris, the driver. Eleni thoughtfully provided information about the sites, the historical record and present-day, an excellent guide to Phillip/Alexander World, BC. Really great stuff. Plus I came back with the juiciest, most delectable peaches from Vergina. Thank you Eleni!!
Only one in our group knew some of the history of this region, but we left learning a ton of information! I'm so glad we did this tour. Eva was an amazing guide and we only learned at the end it was her first time doing this specific tour. We never would have known she was so amazing!
The tour was excellent but your payment system is a hassle: We booked the tour on Feb. 13, 2025 and were told that you would withdraw the tourprice from my Credit Card, and there was nothing else to do for us - but enjoy! On April 25, you wrote that you will withdraw the tourprice. On April 26, you informed us that you had cancelled the tour becauce you were unable to withdraw the amount from my Credit Card. This is not surprising, since most Credit Cards these days use dual confirmation system where the cardholder has to reconfirm the payments. We apreciate that you want to withdraw the amount as late as possible but this just does not work. We had to go through the whole reservation process once more.
Have a good breakfast Lunch about 1 pm Save lots of time for Philips Tomb and marvel at this finds Read about Macedonia before you come
Everyone should know, I think, that visiting these places is indispensable for once education and understanding of the world.
Tina was a fantastic guide who, not only introduced the archeological sites and museums before visiting them, but answered pretty much whatever question was thrown at her. A wonderful day of history!
