It was a great experience for us. Our tour was private and the driver gave us plenty of local color on the way to the sites. We decided to go slightly off script, and he helped us get the most of our day.

Vergina (or Aige in ancient Greek) is located only 82 km away from Thessaloniki, in central Macedonia. Vergina is Unesco World Heritage Site, where among the other antiquites you will have the chance to see the nicely preserved tomb of King Philip II (father of Alexander the Great) and the tomb of Alexander IV (son of Alexander the Great).
The new museum at Vergina showcases remarkable discoveries, including the golden larnax and other royal treasures. With special exhibitions and ongoing research, visitors can explore new findings and gain fresh insights with every visit.
The Palace of Aigai, located in ancient Aigai (modern Vergina), was the royal palace of the Macedonian kings and one of the largest buildings of classical Greece. Cute pair of driver and guide gave intimate insights into the general history of Alexander the Great and the era. The tour was tailored just for our family. We are novice regarding to the history and the accounts were interesting and entertaining. We visited several museums, stopped for lunch, and they gave close account of the life of the general Greeks. Agenda adjusted throughout the day to fit with our kids. The experience was enjoyable.
This is an outstanding one-day (7-hour) private tour to Pella, Aigai and the Royal Tombs. Vasilis, our driver (@iGoHellas), was very informative and an absolute pleasure to talk to throughout the road journey. Luckily, we timed this so well – early October, a weekday, no cruise ships - as at times it felt we were the only people in the Polycentric Museum at Aigai (an architectural gem itself) and the incredible Royal Tombs. An absolutely fabulous experience that is unforgettable. Worth every penny.
Our guide, Constantine, made this tour a great one. His knowledge and ability to relate in a well organized fashion provides with an in-depth insight this veri interesting period in history.
Highly recommend this company. Tour guide very passionate and knowledgeable about the history of the period and driver very obliging and friendly. We felt very safe and confident and well looked after. It was a brilliant tour.
Great tour around Thessaloniki
We 4 were picked up by Antonis Pouliasis near our B&B at the White Tower. As we drove to Pella, our first destination, Antonis provided us with information about the city and countryside we passed on our journey. His lively descriptions were informative, capturing our attention and made our journey pleasant. Our first stop was the ancient city of Pella. He drove us to the closest possible place to enter the site and after our visit, drove us to the Museum at Pella, which was closer to the current city. After touring the museum, he took us to a local restaurant “The Lemon” where we had a pleasant lunch. After that, he drove (about an hour drive) to the tomb and Museum of Phillip II and then the Polycentric Museum of Aigai. At each stop along the day, he guided us to the entrances, helped us get tickets and directed us into the sites and museums. While driving through the countryside, he showed great interest and pride with the agriculture grown in the green valleys we traversed. There were fields of cotton, corn, and orchards of peach, nectarine, apricot. Driving to Aigai, we passed a large reservoir and river, surprising to us all who are accustomed to the drier climate of southern Greece. We cannot compliment Antonis enough for his wit, charm and caring nature to make the drive and our trip an enjoyable and memorable experience. We thoroughly enjoyed our full day adventure to these sites of great archeological importance which has been on my list of places to visit in this beautiful country.
Adonis ! ( aka George Clooney’s twin, as has been mentioned !! Adonis was our driver , and by the end of our trip our best friend , although when we invited all four of us to his house for dinner , he politely declined !! It’s very important to have a gentle courteous and patient driver on a trip like this . Although he wasn’t a guide he told us quite a few stories along the way . Adonis also took us to an extremely good restaurant in Pelles , ! And he is an excellent driver ! Enough of Adonis , the trip was pretty good too ! We know now a lot more about King Philip and his lovely son Alexander the Great , we went to one archeological site ( a lot of walking here , not for the faint hearted in the heat , but there was some shade .. ) and to a burial site , which was underground and extremely well presented . We also went to 2 museums . , excellently laid out All in all a very good trip which was worth the quite high price ., Thanks lovely Adonis !!
Make sure you get a licensed guide. Ours was Athena and she was fabulous - extremely knowledgeable and became a friend! She even made sure that we ate in between sites at a fantastic restaurant, The Lemon, despite our driver wanting us to wait to eat until later even though we explained that someone in our party was diabetic. She even spent time with us after the driver dropped us off, taking us to Agia Sophia in Thessaloniki. My favorite stop was the royal tombs, which have been kept in situ, with the museum built over them. FANTASTIC! The down side to this tour was that our driver was most unpleasant. He was rude to Athena and lied. He rushed us through every stop because he booked another commitment. He changed our start time (with our permission) but he told us it was to avoid the heat when really he was trying to return us in time to make his other commitment, made after ours. Then he said that his boss had booked the other commitment, but when his boss (John?) contacted us, he did not know anything about the driver’s other commitment. I considered giving this tour a lower rating because of him but I did not want it to reflect on Athena, who was a 10 out 5. The beauty of Athena was she made this an amazing day despite the yelling and rushing of the driver. She is like the goddess, herself, full of wisdom and knowledge, with a very kind heart.
Loved our driver. Very knowledgeable about the culture and life in Greece. Gave good recommendations for lunch. Was very patient, letting us take our time at each place. Only down side was the museums weren’t open when we arrived. Not the drivers fault, but be prepared for possible delays. Driver made adjustments and we had a good experience.
Antonis our driver, also known as George Clooney’s twin, and Athena our guide was beyond amazing!! They were so much fun and informative throughout the tour! We did Royal Tombs Aigai along with Pella and countless other stops. Best experience we have had in Greece over the years! Worth it times 100!!
Leisurely way to see the two key towns and dive into history. We learned so much. Even on a hot day the mix of outdoors and cool museums and a AC van made it very enjoyable. Museums had good facilities of restrooms and cafes. We had a great driver and guide.
As an older British couple taking a holiday on the Olympus Riviera near Paralia and preferring not to drive on holiday, we looked for company that would arrange private tours to the historical sights in Central Macedonia tailored to our requirements. We contacted Ioannis and Georgia of igoHellas.com from the UK before we travelled and arranged two tours, one to the archeological site of Dion,Mt Olympus and Platamos Castle, the other to Vergina and Pella to see the royal tombs and museum.. The prebooking service was easy and we liked that we paid just a small deposit and there was a cancellation policy. We could not have wished for better service once we arrived in Greece. Our driver Adonis was always on time, was wholly reliable and was very friendly telling us about his days as a bouzouki player! Our car was beautifully clean and superb air conditioning with plenty of water. We loved having lots of time to explore all the sites properly on our own rather than being herded around in a coach on a group tour. We had a lovely two days exploring the historical sites and beautiful countryside of Macedonia - this part of Greece is so green and lush with lots of fruit trees as well as cotton and rice.We also enjoyed tasting lovely wines produced at the Maratidini winery in the Naoussa region with the two ladies, second generation in charge. We really recommend this company and Adonis our driver. At short notice, they also arranged for Adonis to take us to Thessaloniki so we could spend the day there sightseeing.Excellent value for money
Dimitrios Bekas, our guide, was terrific. Picked us up at our Thessaloniki hotel and took us straight to the Pella Museum and the Pella ruins. Later we went to the Royal Tombs of Vergina, the palace ruins and the new Aigai Museum. All the sites were incredible. Dimitrios was very knowledgeable when it came to Macedonian history and Greek cuisine. He gifted us a beautiful book, The Northern Table, and an Aigai sunburst magnet.
We enjoyed our visit to Pella and Vergina. Our driver, Gina, and tour guide, Athina, were very friendly and accommodating! We learned about Alexander the Great and his family. We saw the tombs and explored museums. It was a fun trip!
Wonderful experience. Our tour guide Monica was so understanding and her knowledge was extremely Impressive. Would recommend this excursion for a world of history knowledge!
Adonis was k iwledgeable. Friendly and an excellent host/ driver The day was incredible So.much history And So many sites Thank you Adonis for this wonderful experiance
A wonderful trip! Friendly and knowledgeable guides, a comfortable car and all the timings worked well. Pella and Vergina are must sees. The new museums are excellent and thr Royal tombs are, of course, jaw dropping. Highly recommended.
We had a wonderful time exploring the highlights of the ancient Macedonian kingdom. Our driver, Mrs Gina (or Georgia), was an exceptional host and storyteller, whose passion for Ancient Greek history and culture truly brought the experience to life. Thank you for such a unique and memorable full-day tour in Macedonia, Greece!
Fantastic way to see Thessaloniki! We were picked up right as we left the cruise ship, and everything was seamless from the start. Since the sites are spread out, this was absolutely the best way to explore the region. A big thank you to Adonis for making the experience so enjoyable. He navigated everything perfectly, shared great insights along the way, and made sure we never felt rushed. Highly recommended! 5/5
My wife and two children (12 and 15 yrs old) had an amazing full-day tour of Pella and Vergina with a personal guide, Ioannis, who earned a PhD in archeology and is former president of the licensed guide association. Ioannis was a wealth of knowledge starting from the moment we stepped into our van with a history of Thessaloniki all the way through our last stop to see the amphitheater where Philip II was assassinated. History buffs and interested tourists alike will love this tour and our guide/driver team did an excellent job making us feel comfortable, informed, and captivated. The guides are a great value, putting in a solid 5+ hrs of nearly non-stop historical narrative. You won’t be disappointed!
I had a wonderful day trip with Savvas! He explained all about the Greek culture and stories on the way to our destination. He was patient and kind and made time to stop and take pictures for me. He provided door to door 5 star service the whole day including lunch and shopping recommendations. I would highly recommend taking this trip, it was beautiful!
Savvy’s was an exceptional professional driver. It was a pleasure to get to know him. We really appreciated his authentic pride in his work. This is not a guided tour which worked perfect for us. His knowledge and insights were just right. The visit to phillipi was a highlight of our trip.
We arranged for a private tour to Vergina and Veria for our stop in Thessaloniki on our Explora cruise. Savvas met us right by the cruise port in a very comfortable, air conditioned car. He took us to the museum of the Royal Tombs of Philip II and Philip IV in Vergina which was about an hour from the port. From there we hiked up to see the ruins of the theater and palace of Phillip II. Savvas was very attentive to our mobility issues and was able to procure a makeshift walking stick for my husband for the steep walk down from these ruins. From there we went to the polycentric museum of Aigai, where we saw the different artifacts found in the tombs. Savvas also drove us to Veria and took us around to see the oldest synagogue in northern Greece and the old Metropolitan church of Veria. We walked around and saw the Footsteps of the Apostle Paul as well. At the end of the tour, Savvas drove around Thessaloniki his hometown and took us for Trigona Elenedis, a pastry Thessaloniki is famous for and a Frappe coffee. It was an amazing tour. We wished we could have stayed longer to see more of Thessaloniki.
Savvas was a very nice guide. We saw many interesting historical sites about Alexander the Great and Philip II. Lots of traveling across the countryside as well.
Highly recommended. The guide was wonderful. And the historical tour is unmatched. I would do it again.
