This is our 7th US ZOO we’ve visited as a family and our least favorite. It cost our family of 4 (2 adults, 1 teen, one elementary age) $160 to visit. Thankfully parking was free & we lucked out with a close spot in the garage, an easy walk away. We also lucked out with beautiful cool weather for mid October. Unfortunately, the animals must hate the cool temps because barely any of the animals were in their enclosure. It was also extremely crowded on a Saturday afternoon. If you can choose, avoid weekend days. We were so excited to see the gorilla enclosure, but only saw 2 gorillas napping. A lot of the main animals were not in their enclosures. It was a big bust.

Has some construction going on but it’s fun and great for family! Plenty of animals and events for visits
We loved this Zoo, nice easy walk with amazing exhibits. The Flamingo exhibit was one of my favorites, so many beautiful flamingos! The cooling tents helped so much!
I booked very last minute and it was smooth and easy to go through with the trip
Wonderful zoo. 7 gorillas and 5 giraffes all living in natural habitat. Well laid out and easy to navigate
Excellent experience and cheaper
If you are a senior and have walking issues, it's a long walk. My husband had his chair walker, it was hot, and we only did half of the zoo. It's a beautifully constructed zoo and enclosures, but hard to walk it all. We really needed transportation to get back to the car.
Bought my tickets on this website the day before and Was not able to access my tickets and can’t find a phone number to call them
There wasn’t a lot of dinosaurs that were advertised too many people
Beautiful place for a family to visit. Lots of shade and places to rest. Animals were in every place.
I only used this web site because I got cash back points from my credit card. But it was a great experience. Buying the tickets we wanted for vacation was simple. Using the app was even easier. The web site sent a promt the day before with our tickets. When we arrived at the venue, they just scanned the tickets in my phone. I will definately use Viator again.
I do like to visit zoos and other cities to see what different animals they have. This zoo could have been pretty good except so many of the exhibits were closed, under construction, pardon our dust. We went on a Sunday afternoon, it was hot, but they have cooling stations which is nice. And they do like a good bird. There are so many birds.
We were looking forward to visiting this zoo, but it was totally disappointing. I realize it was hot, but almost EVERY animal was completely gone! We paid $155 for 4 admission and a scooter. We wondered around for awhile and got fed up and left. A huge waste!. ,
Beautiful establishment my Fiance and I had a wonderful time. We enjoyed ourselves. The atmosphere was conducive to adult and family fun!
Got the wrong dates for the zoo but since I did not make it that day I was able to scan my ticket the next day at the gate with no issues. Parking was free for the zoo
Too many expensive extra charges. Not viewing of animals . If creatures were visible you had to pay extra. How does that help educate people. Plus paid for a beer that when foam settled only half cup. Rip off
This was a amazing place. We did the green pass , feed the flamingos, kangaroos and giraffes. We also did the Rhino experience. I can’t explain what it’s like to touch a Rhino , amazing. The zoo was well maintained, animals looked cared for and healthy. The Congo exhibit WOW. I’ve never seen silver back gorillas before. They were eating, running around. My grandkids loved it. Feeding these animals was a great experience for kids . I’ve never seen or touched a kangaroo before either. They were very friendly. We loved the butterfly enclosure as well. My grandsons favorite was the train. I highly recommended visiting while in town. If we come to San Antonio again , this is must.
IT's a smaller zoo so only takes about 3 hours if you take your time. Maybe 4 with children. well that''s all I have to say so thank you.
We had great time at the Zoo. The kids love it.
As a San Antonio native, I have enjoyed trips to the San Antonio Zoo since the 1950’s: greeted by the flamingos and loving the train rides with each visit. Fortunately. the San Antonio Zoo continues to evolve and develop. We’re now taking grandkids to enjoy the flamingos and train, and CELEBRATING the return of the Gorillas in the fantastic Congo Falls area! Throughout the Zoo, new entrance features provide an inviting San Antonio flair—reflected in new exhibits, more annual membership options, and special opportunities to “talk to the animals.” An added perk—as SA Zoo Members, we receive admission discounts for zoos in other cities. We’re now zoo enthusiasts—having visited the Nashville and Miami zoos most recently. …San Antonio Zoo is still a favorite!
We had a great time, especially in the newer areas. We loved the way that the zoo pathways were set up so that you didn’t miss anything. However, several areas were not available or under construction, and no concessions were open early for snacks, drinks, etc. The older areas were a bit tired and not as pristine or clean as they could have been, and we couldn’t find animals in many of the exhibits. Because of that we thought it was a bit pricey for the experience. We could see that the zoo is working hard to step up it’s game, and we hope that it returns to the jewel that it once was.
Got the family package that included admission and food for 4. Was happy with the price. Some food was expensive but not as expensive compared to other zoos.
Very nice zoo. My favorite was the hippo exhibit.
I've been in S.A. for a little over 2 years and have always wanted to see the zoo but it was a big disappointment. It was midday and most of the animals were sleeping except for the giraffes. flamingos and monkeys. We did see one otter playing in his 'river'. You always had to search for the other animals because most had gone inside from the heat. We did see a sleeping bear and a sleeping alligator. Yay! The enclosures were uninspiring. I don't know how those animals could be happy in such gray, boring enclosures. As I remember, the bear had a small pool to sit in...why wouldn't they fill that moat with water for it...too expensive? It was completely dry. I was particularly interested in seeing the elephants...my favorite animal. After walking forever looking for them, I saw two zoo keepers pass by, a man and a woman and asked the man who was nearest to me where the elephants were. Obviously, I hit a nerve. He didn't smile and coldly told me they didn't have elephants. I smiled and said thank you. Even my son mentioned his unfriendly demeanor. The thing is, to me, a zoo isn't a zoo without elephants...though with the pared down, boring habitats, that's probably a good thing for this zoo. This experience was a waste of our $80. I, as a senior citizen, got a whole $5 off! What a deal! We basically paid for the opportunity to dodge people, walk in the hot sun and search for glimpses of animals. This zoo might be fun for kids who haven't seen other zoos, but it's the worst one I've personally ever been to.
Fun zoo for whole family to enjoy
One of my favorite zoos in the United States. We have been to a lot of zoos. However, I love the set up of this zoo. I love the interaction opportunities with the animals. Great staff. Everybody is accommodating. Love it!!!
The San Antonio Zoo was amazing! Highly recommend going here. Clean and beautiful park and the animals were great. Loved the exhibits
Nice zoo for the size of San Antonio. Several things are being upgraded. Took us 3 hours to do the entire zoo in March. The high temperature was 80 - so comfortable throughout. I recommend going left when you get in and do a clockwise circle and end up back where you start. In this way, you can do the cat grottos (which are shaded and a unique touch), go through the hippo building, and meander slowly up the hill to the new gorilla exhibit. There's giraffe feeding near there. Then you'll slowly come back downhill for the second half. Good play area for kids toward the end if you do it this way. Lots of places to sit down; lots of restrooms. Quite a variety of animals including some rarities like a babirusa. Most is outside, but there are about 5 small buildings for indoor animals.
We were in San Antonio for our son’s Air Force graduation. Have always heard that the zoo was great. Extremely disappointed in our visit. The zoo seemed very small and we didn’t get to see very many animals (it was hot). I feel like the OKC zoo is way better! They are cash free and you have to scan a QR code and buy tickets online ($140 for 4 people!) As soon as we walked in, someone took our picture and gave us a business card to bring to them to view our pictures…they took 1 picture. When we were leaving, we went to see it. They turned it into 4 pictures with 3 different backgrounds. Cost us $40 to get it, but I wanted it because it was a family picture with our son in his dress blues.
Nice zoo to visit if you have time. We spent a morning here, saw a lot. Could have easily spent a full day, but we only had a few hours to spare. Similar to our hometown zoo. Because we are members at our home zoo, we were able to show our membership card to get 1/2 off our admission at the San Antonio Zoo. The zoo is entirely cashless, so instead of scanning the QR code to pay the entrance fee, you’ll need to visit the very small office to the right of the entrance gates to show membership and pay your discounted cost. Absolutely ridiculous there’s a $5 online fee to purchase admission. I’m standing right in front of you. Not online. Price is reasonable with a discount, I’d be hard pressed to pay full price for a visit, especially if there’s more than two. Expensive for families. The gorillas were our favorite! Fun to watch! Very nice, huge facility! Did not realize at the time of visit that it is brand new, just opened in December 2025. Very popular! Take some time to visit!
It was a great experience. They had many animals you don't see any where else. The staff was very helpful
The Gorillas were fun to watch and the giraffes. Good experience overall with a variety of animals to see
Great zoo some exhibits were lackluster compared to other zoos like the lions, giraffes and elephants. But monkey and birds were plenty.
Nice zoo. Great spot to take kids while visiting. We were early in the year so some animals weren't back yet but we got to see a lot.
Too many empty exhibits. Some of the exhibits looked unkempt and unclean. All looking glasses were dirty inside and out. Water was so dirty we couldn't see the fish through the glass. We miss seeing elephants, tigers, lions, and chimpanzees. We did enjoy the birds and the aquarium.
As someone from out of town, I seem to remember having a good experience previously. We did enjoy the aquarium and gibbons, and the new gorilla exhibit is okay. But as other reviewers mentioned, a number of exhibits were closed this time-- no bears, no big cats, and no elephants. Their website says they are renovating in phases, and I imagine it will be nice when it is done. I would give it a few years before visiting again.
Nice zoo Great ape Congo falls was great. You must pay online and they charge an extra $5.00. They don't take cash or credit cards for admission on site. Stupid!!
Spent $150 on tickets only to have many areas Closed off to public. No one said anything about it at the ticket office when we purchased the tickets there on site. Felt like they could've warned us that many places were closed. I felt cheated outta my money and my family DID not enjoy it all all except for the gorilla. Dont bother going u less u call ahead and ask what areas are closed and if its worth price they charge! Refund should be issued for this waste of time and money and minimal animals available to view.
The Congo exhibit is wonderful however there is so much construction and nobody there could give us any information either of what was going on, but hopefully next year if we come back it’ll be better The train is on the outside of the zoo so you really don’t see anything seems pointless.
We had a great experience at the San Antonio Zoo! The zoo is very clean, well organized, and easy to wall around. It’s a perfect place for families, but also fun for adults. We truly enjoyed our time and would definitely recommend visiting while in San Antonio.
It was ok. A variety of birds and reptiles but not many mammals. The Gorillas were hidden from the public and the place was crowded.
Great savings I definitely recommend taking advantage of these promotions!! The experience at the park was amazing love seeing all the new exhibits especially the new Gorillas love love love
Gorillas were awesome pulled a plant out of the ground and threw it at another one!!! Also the mail had his butt to the window playing with his toes!!! The Jaguar walking across the road above was awesome too!!! The Hippos even got out of the water! Eating lettuce right in front of us!!!💕
I felt like this zoo needs a facelift and some cleaning. They had Christmas lights up and they looked so old and dirty. The animal enclosures looked run down too. I also took a train ride. I feel like this experience cost way more than it should have. $20 a person and $7 a person for the train ride. They have a brand new section for the gorillas and that looked cool but I feel like they focused on the new area and neglected the other animals.
Very good we enjoyed the gorillas and the Christmas lights. The rineos were very good to see. All reptiles and birds were good to see.
You spend 60 bucks for entry once you get there everything is dark. Can’t see any of the animals. Everything is shut down, very nice environment just should not be open at night. should rethink your management for opening and closing hours when daylight is available.
The staff is not very friendly. When we asked for a map we were given an attitude. Most of the animals were not out due to the cool weather. We booked several activities including the kangaroo encounter and the lory landing bird encounter. It does state these exhibits close at 5:00. We arrived at 4:30 and the staff says we are not taking any more people because they are closing the exhibits. We asked why and got a bull answer. The only animals out were certain birds and the hippos. We were going to see if the bears were out, but I was very frustrated with everything at the park. We went to guest relations to voice our concern. The staff member was nice enough to refund us the add ons. If you are looking to go to 5he Japanese Tea Gardens they are next to each other. I have been to other zoos across the country and this one is near the bottom.
I would go to this zoo if you love birds. There are so many to see. I found the staff very knowledgeable especially the young man in the flamingo mingle area and the men in giraffe feeding area. I wasn’t impressed with the other animals— most weren’t visible or were sleeping. The viewing window were frequently very dirty so it was difficult to see much.
Our family used to love going to the zoo. Now my husband and I dread it knowing each time we go it will be a day of the zoo nickel-and-diming us for every little thing. Want to pay for your child to have an animal experience? Get ready to buy 2 tickets for everything instead of one. Why? Because you have to accompany your child and you have to pay to supervise them, even if you are not participating in the event. Your child can’t ride the carousel without you? You still have to pay for 2 tickets to stand next to them. The online ticketing system is a racket, the convenience fees add around 30% to your purchase cost. Ok, can I pay in person? No, only online but YOU must pay for the zoo’s convenience. If we hadn’t received zoo passes as a gift, we wouldn’t be back. There are better zoos in Texas that don’t treat their guests like money-trees.
Good to buy tickets on Viator. Cheaper tickets but still the same experience. Viator makes it easy to access and buy tickets.
