FOLLOWING INTERNARARY FOR MISSIONS TOUR ONLY! What you are about to see is older than the Alamo. Most visitors believe the Alamo is the beginning of Texas. It’s not. The real beginning… is the mission system. Between 1718 and 1731, Spain built a chain of missions along this river. Not just churches. Communities. Fortresses. Agricultural centers. Political tools. Spain was not building for religion alone — Spain was building to control land. And that land would one day become Texas. These four missions we’re visiting today are so historically important that in 2015 they were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site — joining places like the Pyramids of Egypt and the Great Wall of China. And they are right here in San Antonio. As we drive, imagine this region 300 years ago. No highways. No skyline. No Texas. Just river, farmland, and indigenous tribes. Spain feared French expansion from Louisiana.
MISSION CONCEPCIÓN was completed in 1755. It is the oldest unrestored stone church in the United States. What you see here is nearly original. These missions were vulnerable to raids from Apache and Comanche tribes. This was not peaceful farmland. This was frontier survival. Inside, faint original fresco paintings still remain — red, blue, yellow pigments from the 1700s. This church has stood here through: The Spanish Empire Mexican rule. The Republic of Texas. The Civil War. Two World Wars And it still stands.
MISSION SAN JUAN became more agricultural than religious. Fields stretched for miles. Crops were traded as far south as Mexico. This was economic infrastructure. The foundations of Texas ranch economy were forming.
MISSION ESPADA is small. Quiet. Simple. But it contains one of the most impressive engineering achievements of Spanish Texas — the Espada Aqueduct. This irrigation system diverted river water into farmland using gravity alone. And parts of it still function today. Three centuries later. This is not just architecture. It is survival knowledge passed across generations.
MISSION SAN JOSÉ was founded in 1720. At its height, over 300 indigenous residents lived within these walls. This was not just a church. It was a fully functioning village. Blacksmith shops. Granaries. Workshops. Living quarters. Everything inside these walls supported a self-sufficient community. The Spanish introduced irrigation systems called acequias — some of which still function today. They introduced cattle ranching. The Texas cowboy tradition traces directly back to Spanish vaqueros trained in missions like this. Even the word ‘rodeo’ is Spanish. Walk toward the Rose Window. Legend says it was carved by a craftsman to honor his lost love. Whether true or not — it represents Spanish baroque artistry at the edge of empire. But we must also acknowledge something important. For Native Americans, mission life was not always voluntary. It often meant loss of culture, language, and freedom.
As we return downtown, consider this: Without these missions — There would be no San Antonio. Without San Antonio — There would be no Alamo. Without the Alamo — There might not be a Republic of Texas. And without Texas — The United States would look very different today. The mission system laid the agricultural, cultural, and political groundwork for everything that followed. Texas began here. Not with war. But with the settlement.

Tom was a fantastic guide. He is so knowledgeable and a great story teller, and he has such reverence for the people whose history he is sharing. We loved seeing the various missions and learning a bit about why some had more success than others. It was great to learn a bit more about San Antonio and Texas history.
Such a fun, well paced tour! Highly recommend for people of all ages. Tom was so informative and funny, and he was like a local celebrity as we walked through the missions. Do this tour!!
Guide trying hard but totally incompetent. No earphones or microphones, totally uninformed about Riverwalk and Missions. She was completely unprepared to lead. It was an unfortunate way to waste our one opportunity to see San Antonio Heritage. Management did apologize and send full refund.
Tom was very knowledgeable about the Missions and its history. I felt that I had enough time at each Mission to explore. Easy to find meeting location. Comfortable van. The only downside was that my 9:15 am reservation was rescheduled to 2 pm and it was the hottest part of the day, and the lighting was harsh for photos. Otherwise, I would recommend this tour.
The small group makes the experience more enjoyable. The guide can move the group faster and address individual interests and questions.
Our guide, Tom, who worked in the National Park Service at the Missions as an archaeologist, was most knowledgeable and thorough with his presentation. Welcomed all questions. The newer van was spotless! Tom, thanks for the cemetery visit as a sidebar into the Hispanic culture.
The tour was great. I would not suggest trying to visit the Missions on your own. It is best to take this tour. It was informational and entertaining. The one thought I had was it would be good to include a local lunch spot. And it would be nice to know who you are meeting for the tour so you can locate them.
It was very informative to know the history of the missions. Venus was very nice and made the whole experience very pleasant.
Better communication is needed for pick-up location Ie. maybe photo of meeting location, txt update if operator running late and who to look for. Other than that, excellent tour with guide having a wealth of knowledge about Mission history. You come away with a very good understanding of the area. Comfortable transportation and guide provided water as a bonus!
Be sure to use the bathroom at stop 1, but our guide was really clear about that. So much knowledge and history. It was great! Tom was awesome.
TOM was a consummate professional guide. He was able to inform, relay stories and folklore and answer questions with ease. He was very communicative and adapted the day to the group. I would HIGHLY recommend this tour and request TOM if possible.
Nice way to learn about the missions. Very comfortable transportation. Tom was our guide. He was extremely knowledgable. He also was passionate about pointing out information that was legend and factual historical information. I also appreciated that Tom ensured everyone felt comfortable.
We had a great time with Tom. He was very passionate about his job. I would highly recommend this tour.
Guide was very friendly... but an overall bad guide. Too much info about personal life and views, not enough about tour details. Driving was ridiculous, erratic and chaotic. She could not connect headset to van, and in some chaotic endeavor threw her hands up and decided to shout for the tour. Which did not work over the noise of the a/c and crazy driving.
My husband and I went to San Antonio for our 44th anniversary. We had Tom as our missions guide and he was the best very knowledgeable. My husband was askto ring the church Bell at one of the missions that was the highlight, would recommend doing this tour.
My wife and I and two teenage sons really enjoyed Tom and Venus’s guided tour. Hearing an evidence based representation Mission history and being given a small glimpse of the hardships endured by the people that raised the stone walls and shared the relative security of community granted renewed respect for our ancestor’s resolve and faith. Thank you so much!
Tom was great. Very informative and a pleasant person to be with. I learned a lot. I highly recommend this tour.
Our tour guide, Venus, was so friendly and awesome. She shared a lot of information, easy to talk with, and very patient as we toured each mission.
Very informative and enjoyable. Venus, our tour guide did a wonderful job with the six of us family members in her van.
We really enjoyed the tour. The drive through San Antonio to get to each stop was interesting because our guide pointed out several good restaurants and talked about the history of San Antonio. The missions were beautiful and we were really surprised at how beautiful and green the surrounding landscape was. We also saw some really nice waterfalls. Our tour guide was extremely friendly and informative. She had tons of interesting information that we wouldn’t have known if we had done a self tour.
Tom was a great tour guide, very informative and personalized. Made the tour fun as well as informative. Definitely recommend!
Venus, our tour guide was absolutely amazing. She was relatively new doing this job but she researched the missions because she knew her stuff. It was very educational. Thank you Venus, us Aussies loved you! This tour was a good choice in August in San Antonio because it is hot that time of year and the mini van was airconditioned and spacious. Very comfortable.
The gal leading the tour was nice, but not a guide. Very little history of anything except her personal world.
To meet at the white statue. We walked all around the Alamo looking for the guide. My husband happened to ask this lady if she knew and it was our guide.
We got lucky with our recent missions tour in San Antonio. We had the pleasure of having Thomas as our tour guide and we were the only 2 people on the tour! Thomas’ historic knowledge of the missions was phenomenal. Thomas is a wonderful storyteller and kept us interested and engaged the entire 3 1/2 hours. We highly recommend Thomas.
If you want to learn about the history of San Antonio and Texas, this is an enjoyable and educational tour that is well worth the time and cost. Our tour guide, Tom, put up with this Aggie, and shared his wealth of knowledge with us. We appreciated Tom’s passion of Texas history and could feel his love of storytelling. Thanks for a great tour. Gig’em!
I loved Tom’s tour. He is the real deal. Tom is an anthropologist, a San Antonio native, with vast experience in all things related with local history. His perspective it’s really valuable to understand the area. I bought the small group 3.5 hour tour, and ended up being the only one person that booked that morning. During the day, the city happen to had a lot planned of activities around town and we couldn’t enter to all the sites, but it was worthy anyway.
The Mission Trail tour was excellent! Tom was a fantastic tour guide. A wealth of knowledge and a great sense of humor!
The Mission Tours are a must to shed historical significance of San Antonio’s history. I loved it as it added more context to the contribution of Native Americans and the Spanish history. Our guide was friendly, knowledgeable and upbeat in over 100+ degrees
convenient, friendly, and very informative. Guide was obviously an expert. Enjoyed entire tour and felt it was probably the best tour available.
Tom was amazing! Knew his stuff, was informative, engaging and a fantastic historian. He was training Venus, and we were her first solo tour. While she was nice, she did not know ANYTHING about the Missions. She also was a reckless driver. It would be all 5’s if Tom was the tour guide, and literally 1’s if it was just Venus. I 100% recommend a Mission’s tour, I just cannot recommend this one, because it is the flip of the dice on the tour guides…
We had an incredible experience on the San Antonio Mission Heritage Tour, and we must give special thanks to our fantastic tour guide, Tom. His deep knowledge of the history and significance of the missions truly brought the stories to life. Tom was friendly, engaging, and took the time to answer all our questions, making the tour both educational and enjoyable. We highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in learning about the rich history of the area, and especially to those lucky enough to have Tom as their guide!
Tom provided an exceptional tour experience characterized by his high level of professionalism, organization, and hospitality. He consistently prioritized the group's comfort and ensured all of our inquiries were addressed comprehensively. His profound understanding of the local sites significantly elevated the excursion; drawing from his deep roots in San Antonio and extensive tenure at the missions, he shared unique, firsthand insights that far surpass what one might glean from written materials, standard audio guides, or less experienced guides. The itinerary was highly efficient, allowing us to learn a great deal in a short timeframe while enjoying comfortable transportation, making this tour an outstanding value that I highly recommend.
This was an excellent way to learn about the Missions in San Antonio. We were fortunate to have Tom as our tour guide. He was extremely knowledgeable from many years of working for the Alamo and the Missions - and he had many stories to share throughout the tour.
The guide was very knowledgeable and could answer my questions. Really enjoyed his insight.
We scheduled this afternoon tour after spending the morning with another TripAdvisor tour (the Premium City Tour), so it was a rather long and warm afternoon. Through no fault of our tour guides, the tour started badly. We arrived 5 minutes early and waited at the designated spot for 15 minutes before we connected with our guides, Tom & Mike. Because the tour was subcontracted through Viator to another tour group (Fun San Antonio Tours), both the guides and us were given contact numbers that were slightly wrong. It took some work to finally connect, probably because we were the only 2 people in our group. Tom, the experienced guide was training Mike and because there were only two of us, we were able to make up time pretty quickly. We were really glad to see so many different missions (UNESCO heritage sites) that afternoon and learned a lot of history which we didn't receive on our first tour in the morning. The Alamo is great but there is so much more to learn! Tom was nice to drop us off at our hotel at the end of the tour.
I knew nothing about the history of San Antonio beyond basic info about The Alamo - after this tour with Tom, I have such a deep appreciation for the indigenous people and their culture. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone - visiting San Antonio or even locals - to learn about the people on which this city was built.
Tom was extremely knowledgeable and he made the information very interesting with his narration. He was also very professional and engaging and clearly cared about the topic and the guests.
Our guide, Tom, is a retired NPS historian, archeologist and ranger who spent his entire career with the missions. He also grew up beside one. His style is conversational and light without any tour guide distracting jokes. I can't imagine any living person being more informed on these five locations and the historical context. This is a superb experience.
Tom put the role of the missions into perspective related to what were the larger influences of the time and then down to individuals that made significant differences to what happened. Incredible picture emerged of what happed and why. His 30+ years of working in the area and specifically with the missions was obvious. He also clearly stated and showed what was old, reconstructed and restored at each mission and reasons for the differences. One of the, if not the best tour I have taken.
Can you drive to each of the missions on your own? Yes! But you won’t get the history lesson we received on this tour. Tom, our tour guide was a park ranger and has an education in archeology and brought the history to life. We loved each mission and the peacefulness of the churches, were so glad we did this.
Our guide Tom was one of the best Viator guides we ever had. Extremely knowledgeable and really helped us dive into the history we were experiencing.
Perfect short trip to the four missions - conception, San Juan, San Jose and Espada, our guide Tom gave an interesting storyline of the different eras of the missions, the reasons for their establishment by the Spanish monarchy, the ways in which the friars established and run the missions and the community attached to it, the reasons for their success and decline, and the views of the natives towards the mission and the continuation of the traditions to modern times. The tour was perfect duration and the van was comfortable on a hot summer day. The churches were beautiful and learning about how successfully and not successfully it replicated European one was interesting!
Decided to venture beyond the River Walk area and thought this tour would be interesting. Our guide was Tom. Tom is a retired Ranger from the Parks Service and therefore had extensive knowledge of the locations visited. We found his narration extremely engaging and thought provoking. The entire tour felt as though is was a local friend taking you to some hidden gems. Really enjoyed the relaxed pace of the tour. Once Tom had completed his narration, there was time to explore each location instead of the traditional "let's keep moving" that is typical in tour companies. Would recommend this tour without hesitation. As a matter of fact, sent the link to a friend immediately following the tour. Thoroughly enjoyed!
The tour was interesting and informative. Tom, the tour guide was knowledgeable, professional and friendly. The tour started and ended on time as described.
I recently had the pleasure of a 3.5-hour small group tour of the historic missions in San Antonio, and it was an unforgettable experience. Our tour guide, Tom, was not only passionate about the history of the missions but also incredibly well-informed. We visited several missions, including Mission San José and Mission Concepcion. The intricate designs and beautifully preserved structures were beautiful. We had opportunities to engage with the history, including exploring some of the original structures and learning about the various cultural influences that shaped the area. Beyond just the missions themselves, Tom provided context about the local Native American tribes, Spanish colonization, and the role of these missions in the broader narrative of Texas history. The tour was well-organized, with comfortable transportation and clear meeting points. The pacing allowed us to soak in the beauty of each site without feeling rushed. Overall, it was a wonderful experience that I highly recommend if you are planning a trip to San Antonio.
Tom was an informed, respectful, and organized tour guide. He made sure that everyone on the tour was comfortable and that our questions were answered. He has a really deep knowledge of all of the sites we visited, which made a huge difference, as he was able to share information that I don’t think we could learn from just reading about the sites, listening to audio guides, or even talking to other tour guides who haven’t worked at the missions or lived here for as long as he has. We learned so much in a very short time and were transported in comfort to all of the sites we wanted to see. It was a great tour for a great price, and we appreciate having had the experience here in San Antonio!
Tom was a fantastic guide! His many years of experience working for the missions combined with his vast knowledge as an archeologist and penchant for storytelling made for a very enjoyable tour. Comfortable roomy seating in a spacious air conditioned to get from place to place. Highly recommend!
Tom was a great tour guide. The tour had great conversations, insides and new perspectives in the real vision and missions that created San Antonio. Highly recommended!
