FOLLOWING INTERNARARY FOR MISSIONS TOUR ONLY! What you are about to see is older than the Alamo. Most visitors believe the Alamo is the beginning of Texas. It’s not. The real beginning… is the mission system. Between 1718 and 1731, Spain built a chain of missions along this river. Not just churches. Communities. Fortresses. Agricultural centers. Political tools. Spain was not building for religion alone — Spain was building to control land. And that land would one day become Texas. These four missions we’re visiting today are so historically important that in 2015 they were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site — joining places like the Pyramids of Egypt and the Great Wall of China. And they are right here in San Antonio. As we drive, imagine this region 300 years ago. No highways. No skyline. No Texas. Just river, farmland, and indigenous tribes. Spain feared French expansion from Louisiana.
MISSION CONCEPCIÓN was completed in 1755. It is the oldest unrestored stone church in the United States. What you see here is nearly original. Look at the thick stone walls. They were built for protection — not decoration. These missions were vulnerable to raids from Apache and Comanche tribes. This was not peaceful farmland. This was frontier survival. Inside, faint original fresco paintings still remain — red, blue, yellow pigments from the 1700s. This church has stood here through: The Spanish Empire Mexican rule. The Republic of Texas. The Civil War. Two World Wars And it still stands.” “Imagine attending mass here in 1760.”
MISSION SAN JUAN became more agricultural than religious. Fields stretched for miles. Crops were traded as far south as Mexico. This was economic infrastructure. The foundations of Texas ranch economy were forming.
MISSION ESPADA is small. Quiet. Simple. But it contains one of the most impressive engineering achievements of Spanish Texas — the Espada Aqueduct. This irrigation system diverted river water into farmland using gravity alone. And parts of it still function today. Three centuries later.” “This is not just architecture. It is survival knowledge passed across generations.”
MISSION SAN JOSÉ was founded in 1720. At its height, over 300 indigenous residents lived within these walls. This was not just a church. It was a fully functioning village. Blacksmith shops. Granaries. Workshops. Living quarters. Everything inside these walls supported a self-sufficient community. The Spanish introduced irrigation systems called acequias — some of which still function today. They introduced cattle ranching. The Texas cowboy tradition traces directly back to Spanish vaqueros trained in missions like this.Even the word ‘rodeo’ is Spanish.” Walk toward the Rose Window. “This is the famous Rose Window. Legend says it was carved by a craftsman to honor his lost love. Whether true or not — it represents Spanish baroque artistry at the edge of empire.” “But we must also acknowledge something important. For Native Americans, mission life was not always voluntary. It often meant loss of culture, language, and freedom. .”
As we return downtown, consider this: Without these missions — There would be no San Antonio. Without San Antonio — There would be no Alamo. Without the Alamo — There might not be a Republic of Texas. And without Texas — The United States would look very different today. The mission system laid the agricultural, cultural, and political groundwork for everything that followed. Texas began here. Not with war. But with the settlement.

Tom was the very best tour guide. He has worked at the missions and gave us extra information that we would have never gotten from anyone else.
Everything was great be ready to be educated fantastic job Tom could not have asked for a better tour guide Thanks again Tom
Tom was one of the best tour guides I ever had. He gave clear instructions on how to find him at the beginning of the tour. He was organized and knowledgeable about the different missions we visited. I left with a better understanding of local history and culture.
This was an excellent tour. Tom was very knowledgeable and entertaining. Would definitely recommend for anyone visiting San Antonio.
We learned so much from Tom about the history of this area! This is definitely the way to visit the missions and get a sense of the history that shaped it.
Although it meets at the Alamo, the tour doesn’t go inside. The other mission sites and the tour guide more than make up for that.
Our Mission Trail Heritage Tour was excellent. Tom brought the history of the San Antonio missions to life. We got a semester course in an afternoon. He is an entertaining and knowledgable guide.
Tom our guide was great. Smart, funny, very enjoyable afternoon tour. Thanks for the fun day in San Antonio
Tom was a fantastic story teller & great fun to be with. We were very happy to see that San Antonio is finally making the Alamo plaza a truly memorable, historic site & museum, and Tom’s detailed narrative really brought the history to life. We also toured the Cathedral and two more missions that, along with the Alamo, form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. My only disappointment is that we didn’t get to San Juan Capistrano or to Mission Espeda & the Espeda Aqueduct, which are both listed in the detailed itinerary. Looking again, I see that the tour is titled “Missions Only or City and Missions,” but when one clicks for itinerary details, only the 5 missions are described. I didn’t find any option to select which version to book, but maybe that was my mistake. Regardless, we thoroughly enjoyed Tom and would highly recommend requesting him when you book.
A fantastic way to learn about the missions in San Antonio. Our guide Tom was truly incredible. He shared the history of the missions and the people in a fun and interesting way. We liked that we didn’t have to drive from mission to mission. The van was perfect. We highly recommend this experience to anyone who is interested in the San Antonio missions!
The Mission Tour is a great way to learn about the history of San Antonio! Tom, our guide, was a fantastic story teller with a wealth of information. He kept our attention the entire tour sharing his knowledge and fun facts!
Tons of information, well rounded. Tour guide was very knowledgeable. She had a funny personality, made the tour very enjoyable.
Tom is wonderful and incredibly knowledgeable about all the sites we visited! It was amazing to see all 5 missions and hear their histories.
This is 3.5 hours so be ready for it! Great narrative and tour guide! I have been to the missions before i. My own but the additional info and history made it like a new experience.
Great tour with the perfect guide: he knows all the facts and brings this in such a lovely way that you get immersed in the history of the missions
Tom was very knowledge about the missions as well as the history of the San Antonio Area. His background definitely helped!
Very informative and educational. Our guide was very knowledgeable with many years of experience. Glad we participated
Very interesting tour and Tom explained and told the story of each site we visited. The tour is relaxed and not rushed at all. Would recommend.
Tom, the tour guide was very professional, responsive, and extremely knowledgeable. He was flexible and we learned a lot about San Antonio. I highly recommend this tour to anyone.
We really enjoyed learning more about the Alamo, seeing parts of downtown San Antonio and the missions. Our guide, Tom, had a wealth of knowledge that he shared with us. I highly recommend this interesting and informative tour.
Seeing the missions was interesting. Our guide was friendly and kind. She mentioned that she had only done this tour for a little over a month. Perhaps with more time, she will learn more history to share.
Tom was an entertaining and thorough story telling guide who really kept us completely engaged. His encyclopedic knowledge of San Antonio history coupled with his archaeology background is unique. His passion for history shines through and created a memorable experience for us. I highly recommend choosing a Mission tour with Tom.
This is the perfect tour to get out of the Alamo and into the real history of San Antonio. Tom was an excellent guide and storyteller. Brought the world of 1718-1732 to life and up to the current day - as we experienced vibrant parish life today at each mission church! From ancient Kings to current Royalty - Tom has a story to share. Add this to your visit - well worth your time!
Toms knowledge and experience is unmatched. He was amazing, Tom was funny and very personable. You will love this tour, highly recommend !!!
The guide we had was awesome and made the whole tour enjoyable and informative. Well worth the cost and would urge others to experience.
It was such a pleasure to go on this tour with Tom. He was so nice, knowledgeable, passionate and a great storyteller. As a solo traveller with no car, this tour made it very easy to see the missions and gave me so much information that I would not have been able to get otherwise. I could have continued to learn for much longer!
Tom was very informative and knowledgeable and FUN! He answered all of our questions and made the experience enjoyable and personal. I highly recommend Tom and the tour!
Highly informative and engaging tour led by Tom, a former archaeologist and National Park Service ranger. We were traveling with our two teens, ages 16 and 13, and got to geek out on all things history, from Spanish colonial culture and the mission system to the local Indigenous population and the history of San Antonio. My son is a history junkie, while my daughter loves art, and the tour definitely satisfied both of their interests. The tour is conducted in an air-conditioned Sprinter bus, which makes it easy to stay cool and comfortable between stops. We visited four representative missions, each offering a different glimpse into the region’s history and culture. While the tour does not include the Alamo, it begins there, which provides helpful context for understanding the working missions we visited afterward. It was a great way to spend the morning. If it’s your first time in San Antonio, you owe it to yourself to learn about the people, cultures, and history that shaped the city. Tom's knowledge and his exceptional storytelling is an excellent way to do it.
Tom, our tour guide had a depth of knowledge of local culture of the missions plus the impressive academic credentials to provide an enthusiastic and attention holding explanation of the historical and present day significance of the missions.
The tour guide is very knowledgeable about the history of the mission. He is also very hilarious. I would recommend him everytime.
This tour gets you to all of the missions in San Antonio in the comfort of an air conditioned van, with a knowledgeable tour guide. At each mission you get the full history, little known facts, and time to explore. It’s so much more convenient than trying to figure it all out on your own.
I took my 10-year-old grandson on this tour after he had a unit in Texas missions in school. Tom is the perfect tour guide for this tour. He worked on digs around the missions many years ago and he was a park Ranger at the missions for 26 years. We greatly enjoyed learning about the missions and hearing Tom’s stories. I live in San Antonio and did not know most of what we learned. I highly recommend this tour for tourists and residents.
We had a awesome tour guide and he was very informative on the missions. The missions were very beautiful and the architecture was amazing.
This was the best tour we have been on in San Antonio. Best tour guide (thank you again Tom)!!! Very knowledgeable and threw in some funny zingers with his delivery. My wife and I enjoyed ourselves throughout and learned a lot of info about the history of the Spanish missions. We highly recommend this tour to anyone.
Our guide, Tom, was phenomenal. He was fun to be with and so informative. He was happy to share his appreciation and knowledge of the missions and their history. He’s a great storyteller so we were engaged the whole time. He was also happy to answer any questions we had. Definitely take his tour, top notch, for sure!
As the tour guide, Michael was VERY courteous and accommodating. His company’s air conditioned van was very new and well maintained. Michael knew very little about the San Antonio Missions, and did not really appear all that interested in learning or he would have shown a more in-depth knowledge of the missions. He could not accurately answer 90% of the questions posed to him. But he asked if we liked it. How is one to politely respond to the answer of that question?Michael’s manager, should they care, have put him through some sort of training and proof that he retaining that training information before deploying Michael to the mission of being able to knowledgeably explain the Missions. Otherwise, Michale was like a paid driver with minimal entertainment and minimal information about the tour sites that he was deployed to drive clients to. We will always remember this tour, but it will be more like a joke that the tour guide knew very little, could not answer our questions, and was probably not motivated by our questions to go back and educate himself before the next tour. Michael was a very, very nice and accommodating individual to our comfort, and we enjoyed that. But he was definitely not equipped to be tour guide. He was equipped to be a driver in a very nice air-conditioned van.
The tour was very informative, the perfect amount of time, and we were fortunate enough to be the only ones that day. Our tour guide Tom was very knowledgeable and loves what he does and it shows. I highly recommend this tour for anyone that wants to see the tours and learn about the little things you can't pick up just going on your own. The only improvement I would recommend is would be nice to give a little time to explore the missions on our own. Other than that, it was an outstanding tour given by a great tour guide!
The experience was very informative and interesting. The host was professional, well informed and entertaining. Tom is an actual archeologist. It was extremely hot on our trip, and our guide did his best to keep us as cool as possible, and cold water in a cooler in the tour van.
This is leisurely van tour that will keep your interest throughout. I am a history teacher with an art and architecture background. This tour satisfied it all. My wife particularly enjoyed all the discovery about indigenous peoples. A memorable half day.
Very interesting tour. Tom was so knowledgeable of the missions and the mission system. He included stories that made everything more personal and interesting. We highly recommend this tour.
Mike was an excellent tour guide. I recommend Mike for your tour! He was knowledgeable of many of the places!
Tom was a fantastic guide! His many years of experience working at the missions and vast knowledge of the history enhanced his expertise as an archeologist and helped us truly understand the impact of the Spanish mission on the area. He made it so interesting and interactive and we learned a ton and had a great time. Highly recommend!
A great tour, and a really knowledgeable guide Tom. Great experience! Recommend if you are looking for the things to see while in San Antonio!
This has to be the best group tour I have ever done. That says a lot coming from me. I was an American Airlines Flight Attendant for 30 years and have a daughter who is a pilot. I have traveled extensively and continue to travel. What made it so great? Tom. The guide. His knowledge was great, his presentation spot on. He kept us engaged. I am a native Texan and kind of ashamed to say I have not traveled much in my home state. Decided to change that. Taking this tour was so worth it. Met at the Alamo, so it is on you to see that, and kudos to the changes to Alamo plaza in the last 3 years. Huge improvements. Tom gave a briefing of what we would be doing. We then boarded a 15 person van. At that point we visited 4 missions that I had no idea were even here. Stop right now and BOOK THIS!.
This takes about three hours but it feels like 10 minutes because of it being immensely interesting. Highest marks if you like history at all!
Guides were well informed and witty. We learned so much about the history of the missions and the current status. Tom provided such interesting details about each mission and answered all our questions. It was a much appreciated excursion.
It's a very well put together tour. Tom really knows his stuff. He is also very passionate about the missions and it comes through during the tour. You see a total of 5 missions that are really beautiful.
The tour guide (Tom) was so knowledgeable! He was friendly, funny, and could answer every question. He was passionate about the tour, which made it so memorable! I would do this tour again! The transportation was comfortable, and he even shared things with us, en route between each Mission. Much better than the big bus tours.
Fabulous! In depth overview of the 4/5 San Antonio missions (minus Alamo) highlighting the history of, structures, people, purpose and degree of success. I feel the success of our tour was because of the tour guide Tom. Super knowledgeable. Great voice. Enthusiastic. Couldn’t recommend it enough.
