I've visited here before, do I knew what to expect. I have always been fascinated by submarines. Even as I mature in years I still feel like a kid when I'm in the bowels of the sub. I fondly remember submarine movies such as "The Enemy Below", "Run Silent, Run Deep"and "U-571", among others. Being able to climb throughout a destoyer escort was a great bonus! I highly recommend visiting Seawolf Park.

Itinerary
At the Galveston Naval Museum, you can step right into history while enjoying some of the best waterfront views in Galveston. Explore two real WWII vessels—the submarine USS Cavalla (SS-244), nicknamed the Lucky Lady, and the destroyer escort USS Stewart (DE-238), the Protector. You’ll walk the same decks sailors once did and get a hands-on feel for life at sea during wartime. Beyond these iconic ships, you’ll also see the sail of the USS Tautog (SSN-639) and the conning tower of the USS Carp (SS-338), both showcasing milestones in submarine technology and honoring the men who served beneath the waves. As you explore, take a moment to enjoy the sweeping views of Galveston Harbor—ships passing by, seabirds overhead, and the perfect backdrop for photos. Whether you’re a history buff, a family looking for a unique day out, or just someone who enjoys a great waterfront view, the museum offers a memorable experience you won’t find anywhere else.

I would explore the ship first because it is larger than you think. Don’t wear loose shoes like flip-flops since you have to climb up and down small metal stairs. The submarine is really something. You have to climb through smaller portholes to get from compartment to compartment.
It was great. My grandson loved it
My husband and I loved the trip at Navel Museum in Galveston. Very informative and very interesting. The price of the ticket is very reasonable. Our visit lasted about 11/2-2. hours. You could take your time and enjoy the visit.
Very informative. Self tour was easy. If you have handicap tag or plate parking is free. You can see the cruises so close when they leave the port.
I’m not for sure if this would be a solo experience even though it was very interesting to see the torpedo and old navy ships and being in that atmosphere with others walking around, I would of preferred a tour guide such as navy officer or retired captain to walk us thru all those area in the ships and get a better understanding reading the materials was good, but having a guide who exactly lived on those types of of experiences is another thing makes it sureal ,but going thru those port holes definitely its not for the people who are claustrophobia or extremely obese , too talk like 6ft and over and definitely like me who has bad knees lol, a lot of bending won’t fit thru the tiny holes but it is definitely a site to see how our shoulders lived in those quarters
Very interesting, great history, learning how they fought to save our country. I would love to bring all my grandchildren to this museum.
Our grandsons enjoyed walking through the sub and ship. They loved seeing up close how the sub worked.
It's the tour! We went for Father's Day 2026. The whole family enjoyed the experience of seeing what our Navy men and women experienced and the technology they used in the world wars! The whole family enjoyed it!
Two great WWII vessels to tour. Highly recommend the museum.
Even though it was pouring down rain, we still loved exploring the ship and submarine. I would highly recommend this place for a picnic on a nice day. Definitely plan on returning.
Great experience. We enjoyed self guided tour as we could spend more time at spots that interested us more.
Sub was really fascinating. Rainy day but still a good experience. History there was very interesting.
As a history buff, I was not disappointed. The only regret is there are usually restrictions on where you can go on the ship. Couldn’t see the bridge or CIC. They built up the area well and made it interesting.you really have to see a destroyer escort to believe how small it was. The brave men who served on them in WWII were courageous and -brave. Thanks for for honoring our veterans.
We did the HARD HAT TOUR and it was so worth it! It so happened that we were the only couple on the tour this day and I was so glad. My husband started feeling sick half way through and we had the most wonderful young man named Brent, who helped him and totally took his time with us. We weren’t able to tour the destroyer so Brent sat on a park bench with us and pointed out and described as much as he could from the outside. Brent saved the tour for us, making it one of our best tours in Galveston.
Many historical facts and stories posted throughout this area helped make this experience enjoyable. Maps and small scale ships along with maneuverable guns were all enjoyable parts.
Very interesting. Have to see. Take the family learn some history. We loved this.
What a cool experience. But, I didn't think the area did these beautiful war vessels justice. There are porta Johns and a gift shop in a shipping container. Can we at least make these beautiful war vessels and give proper accomodations to honor them. Those are my only knocks
Was in Houston for a couple of days so came down to Galveston for the day. The Naval Museum is a must do. Amazing vessels that the volunteers are working so hard to preserve. Amazing to walk on and thru these historic vessels. Lots to see and read. Thanks to all the volunteers and the team at the museum.
Visiting the Galveston Naval Museum was an amazing experience! Getting to walk through a real submarine and battleship was both fascinating and eye-opening. It’s a great place to explore and learn about naval history up close. I will admit, it got really hot inside the battleship during my visit, and I had to cut my tour short because of the heat. Still, the overall experience was worth it, and I’d absolutely recommend it to anyone visiting Galveston. Just be sure to bring water and dress cool if you’re going in warmer weather!
I wasn't planning on visiting this museum, but once we arrived at Sea Wolf Park and explored the area, I wondered....maybe this is the museum for which I saw an advertised Women in World War II exhibit in Galveston. The lady at the ticket window is very good at her job! She greets you immediately, so there's no time to back out. Just kidding! She was super friendly and helpful, and I knew right away we were going to enjoy exploring here. Getting to walk into the sub and ship is so much fun, and I enjoyed walking around the grounds, reading the historical markers and (yes!) I found the Women in World War II exhibit. It was a blazing hot day when we visited, and fortunately there was a shaded pavilion to rest and get out of the sun. But the best part for me was standing in the breezeway of the USS Stewart and being instantly cooled off with the amazing breeze from the bay. Felt so good, and I highly recommend standing there for a minute during the summer. All the displays and informational signs were fantastic! So glad we stopped to explore this museum.
This was so much fun! It was so interesting to be able to go on these vessels. You get to see the living conditions that these people live in to serve their country and my respect for them has grown even more. If you like history this is a must see.
It was awesome being able to see hands on what the ship and submarine are like. Keep up the good work! The submarine engine and torpedo rooms were ultra cool. Would love to also see the engine room of the ship. The bathroom trailer was nice and clean. It's always nice to have a clean bathroom to use when at a museum and they did well with that too.
I loved the Steward and the submarine self tour. I with there was a tour for the aux and engineering spaces because I am retired gas turbine off newer destroyers.
The volunteer on the sub was awesome. He was a former crew member. Great stories. Nice area. Veterans discount for the ships but all pay $10 to park. Worth the drive.
Went with my 12 year grandson, we loved it! A Chaplain / ex submariner took us through all aspects of how the submarine worked, life in it, history, etc. Great experience!!! Walked the ship, information only through the signs, you get the idea of what was a war ship back then.
First off it is $10 just to get in the parking lot, which seems silly. There is not a clear ticket booth for the museum. Just a small building with no signage really. A bit odd. You get wristbands for seeing the museum. The submarine was very cool. Not something you see many places. The ship was not as exciting as there were not as many things to see on it. Also a great place to watch the cruise ships leave port and sail off into the gulf. A short visit for us, but saw something new - the submarine. Bathrooms on site.
Smiling welcome, very beautiful tour on the boat and the submarine.
