Wow, our guide Annie has made our stay in Takayama so wonderful even after our tour. Our tour was personalised, knowledgeable, friendly and fun! Annie was very perceptive in getting to know us and what we wanted to see and experience. We did it all from history, tastings, viewing local product specialities, coffee and so much more. And she gave us information about other things we wanted to do and experience during the rest of our stay. We cannot recommend her highly enough. Thanks Annie.

Itinerary
Sanmachi Street is a popular sightseeing area in Hida-Takayama. As an old town, the area has houses and stores from the Edo period (1603 - 1868). The area is lined with shops carrying local specialties such as Japanese sake, senbei (rice crackers), barbecue yakiniku Hida beef, and croquettes. The area has a lively atmosphere with people shopping and eating. Sanmachi Street is a five-minute walk from JR Takayama Station. Be sure to stop by when you visit Takayama.
Because of its valuable timber resources, the Hida Region around Takayama was put under direct control of the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1692. The Takayama Jinya (高山陣屋) served as the local government office headed by the officials dispatched from Edo (present day Tokyo). The building complex was in official use until 1969, and is now open to the public as a museum. It includes various nicely maintained tatami mat rooms that once served as offices, conference rooms, guest rooms and residential space. There is also an interesting interrogation room. Beside the main building stands a large storehouse built in the 1600s. Known as the biggest traditional rice storehouse in Japan, it now functions as a museum, showcasing belongings and official documents of past feudal lords, old maps of the Hida Region and historic town plans. Admission 440 yen
■Hida Takayama Art and Festa Forest Matsuri no Mori (Festival Forest Museum) offers a glimpse into the vibrant world of Takayama’s famous festivals. The museum features full-sized replica floats (yatai), richly decorated with gold leaf and lacquer, as well as mechanical karakuri dolls that perform traditional dances in a dramatic underground hall. In addition to the festival exhibits, visitors can explore a nature museum with a global insect collection and meet cute animals like squirrels and rabbits. There is also a peaceful tea house and a small art gallery on-site(10min walk from Matsuri no Mori). Blending culture, nature, and local charm, Matsuri no Mori is an enjoyable stop for visitors of all ages.
The Higashiyama Walking Course (東山遊歩道, Higashiyama Yūhodō) is a pleasant walking route through Takayama's temple town (Teramachi), the city's rural "suburbs" and Shiroyama Park, a wooded hill and former site of Takayama Castle. Along the 3.5 kilometer long course, you will pass more than a dozen common temples and shrines, the ruins of Takayama's former castle and ordinary scenes of a rural Japanese town. While the Higashiyama Walking Course is by no means a stunning sightseeing experience, it offers a pleasant way to spend one or two hours and get to know Takayama's calmer side.
Takayama Festival Floats Exhibition Hall(高山祭屋台会館). The Takayama Festival, held in spring (April 14 and 15) and autumn (October 9 and 10), is ranked as one of Japan's three most beautiful festivals (the other two are Kyoto's Gion Matsuri and the Chichibu Matsuri). Four of the autumn festival's eleven floats (yatai) are exhibited at the Takayama Matsuri Yatai Kaikan (高山祭屋台会館), a hall next to Sakurayama Hachiman Shrine. The elaborately decorated floats are several hundred years old and beautiful examples of Takayama's legendary craftsmanship. Adjacent to the Matsuri Yatai Kaikan lies the Nikkokan, a spacious hall containing impressive models of the different precincts of Toshogu Shrine in Nikko, one of the most ornate and celebrated shrines in the country. The miniature models are beautifully intricate and are accompanied by short explanations in Japanese and English. Photos are permitted inside both halls.
Two morning markets (朝市, Asaichi) are held in Takayama on a daily basis from around 7:00 (8:00 in winter) to noon: the Miyagawa Market along the Miyagawa River in the old town, and the Jinya-mae Market in front of the Takayama Jinya. The stands sell local crafts, snacks and farm products such as vegetables, pickles and flowers. There is typically a pleasant atmosphere around the markets, as tourists and locals alike saunter from stall to stall purchasing goods and food and talking.
Hida Kokubunji Temple, about a five-minute walk from JR Takayama Station, is a well-known Buddhist temple in Takayama. Its iconic three-storied pagoda was constructed in 1820. A Buddhist statue thought to have been made in the Heian period is enshrined in the main building. Be sure to take notice of the huge gingko tree on the grounds. It is over 1,260 years of age.
Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine in Takayama is the venue for the Takayama Festival in the autumn. Next to the shrine is the Takayama Festival Floats Exhibition Hall, or Yatai Kaikan, where four of the actual floats used in the festival are on display. The shrine is 15 minutes by Machinami Bus (clockwise) or a 20 minute walk from JR Takayama Station.
The Kusakabe Folk Museum is a historic private residence that was opened to the public. The building was constructed during the Meiji period in Edo architectural style. It is due to its splendid architectural technique, the entire building is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The museum is thirteen minutes by Machinami Bus (counterclockwise) or a fifteen-minute walk from JR Takayama Station.
Yoshijima Heritage House was built in Meiji 41 (1908). Because it has been a Sake brewery since olden times, a huge sakabayashi (sign of a shop dealing in sake, made of Japanese ceder leaves) is hung under the eaves. In contrast to the masculine style of the Kusakabe house, it can be said that this Yoshijima house is a structure possessing subtlety and feminine beauty.
Takayama Showa-kan Museum, The retro streets of 1950 are reconstructed inside the museum, and the lifestyle and culture of that time period are nostalgically revived. There is Midget Alley, a barbershop, a photo studio and a general store. Many nostalgic items are on display, and visitors can see and feel the good old days.
There is old good atmosphere with a set of Showa movies at Hida Takayama retro museum. You can actually “See it”,“Snap it” and “Play it” a figure, magazine, poster, toy, game, showa retro pachinko, etc. It is an experience-type of museum that you can feel the life and culture of Showa.
Hida Folk Village (飛騨の里, Hida no Sato) is an open air museum exhibiting over 30 traditional houses from the Hida region, the mountainous district of Gifu Prefecture around Takayama. The houses were built during the Edo Period (1603 - 1867) and were relocated from their original locations to create the museum in 1971. In a village-like atmosphere, the museum features buildings such as the former village head's house, logging huts, storehouses and a number of gassho-zukuri farmhouses. These massive farmhouses are named after their steep thatched roofs which resemble a pair of hands joined in prayer ("gassho"). They were moved here from nearby Shirakawago, where gassho-zukuri houses are the reason for the region's World Heritage status. Admission 700 yen (parking: 300 yen)

My husband and I booked the Takayama Customized Half-Day Tour. Our guide, Akane "Annie" Ito, led us through the morning market and old merchant streets, sharing the history of the Hida region and its famous craftsmen in a way that brought the town to life. Annie is also an expert on sake, and she took us to a sake tasting where we discovered our love for plum sake. Her English was excellent, and she was warm and happy to answer all our questions about local life, food, and customs. She also gave us great recommendations for coffee, Hida beef, and what to see on our own afterward. Four hours felt like just the right amount of time to see Takayama's highlights at a comfortable pace. We highly recommend Annie to anyone visiting Takayama!
Tatsuya was an excellent guide for our half day tour of Takayama. We started with a visit to the Pagoda then visited the morning market alongside the river where we fed the carp and tried some excellent street food and shopping. We also saw a sake distilliary and the government buildings. Tatsuya was very knowledgeable about the area and took lots of photos of us along the way. An enjoyable tour in a lovely city. Thanks Tatsuya, Neil and Sheryl Buckley
Summer was an excellent and knowledgeable guide.
Wonderful tour with Yuko of this fabulous town and was lucky enough to be there for the first day of the Autumn Festival which was amazing ! Yuko was very friendly, amazing local knowledge and excellent English and I am very happy to give her the highest recommendation.
The 4 hour tour was arranged by our tour operator. We had a charming guide, Yuriko, who had excellent local knowledge. We visited a number of local interests including temples, shrines, morning markets, historic streets and houses, sake and miso breweries. Yuriko was informative and attentive. It was the icing on the cake of our Takayama stay.
We had a great tour with Yasuji. He was very knowledgeable and flexible. Yasuji really helped us as my wife mobility challenges. I would definitely recommend this.
Ito was lovely and educational. He has a nice temperament, and great knowledge of the culture and history.
We had a wonderful six hour walking tour of Takayama with our Guide Yoku. She was very informative, friendly, and helpful with suggestions on where to eat and where to shop. We would highly recommend her services for a thorough experience of the historical town of Takayama.

We really enjoyed the guide and learned much about the history, food, culture... Big thanks
We really enjoyed our tour with Yuko. It was entertaining and informative, and she was very flexible in accommodating to our wishes. We loved the sights and the company, learned so much more about Takayama than we would have without her.
Very well organised tour, with a very professional Guide Yuko. She contacted us well in advance to check our preferences and adjust the programme to our wishes. She was helpful and open to our suggestions. She gave us a lot of information and facts. It was a very good experience to visit Takayama with a Guide, we strongly recommend.
I had the most wonderful experience on the Takayama Full-Day Private Tour with Yuko. From the very beginning, she was incredibly organized, even reaching out before the tour to adjust our start time so we could beat the summer heat. Yuko is exceptionally knowledgeable and provided detailed information about Takayama’s rich history and culture. She answered all of my questions with a smile. She took me to a fantastic local, cozy tofu restaurant that perfectly fit my dietary preferences for light, vegetable-based food. She also gave me excellent, thoughtful advice on local souvenirs like the traditional Sarubobo dolls. I enjoyed every single moment of this tour. If you are visiting Takayama, I highly recommend booking with Yuko!
Mizu met us at our hotel and then gave us a half-day tour of the key places we wanted to go. She was amazing and knew so much about the attractions as well as the town in general, history, and the local area. We were truly honored to have her as our guide!

Yuko was an excellent tour guide in Takayama . She was knowledgeable and knew the area and history very well. Yuko also tailored the tour to accommodate shopping that we wanted to do going to some antique shops and many hidden away gems. She was interactive and it was like being with someone in your family, very comfortable.
Micasa was an excellent and knowledgeable guide, answering our many questions and helping us find a number of unique specialty shops we would not have found on our own. His past work focused on cultural preservation proved to be a huge asset, in that he was able to provide a lot of context that we would not have been able to get otherwise. Overall, job very well done!
Such lovely guide - Yuko was brilliant and understood our needs - helping and giving information
JGA Yoko was a wonderful guide and Takayama is truly a hidden gem of Japan. I fell in love with this place thru seeing the blend of ancient Japan with the modern world today. JGA Yoko was so beautifully articulate as she informed us about the history of the samurai, the incredible parade floats that move thru the city twice a year at the turn of the season, and gorgeous shrines to boot. Not to mention the shops of old town as well. It was a perfect afternoon getting to know the corners of Takayama I’m sure not everyone who visits gets to see. Can’t recommend this tour enough!
This was one of the best tours that we have had in our first 2 weeks in Japan. Yuko was well organized very thorough in all her explanations of Takayama. She also gave us dinner & tea ceremony recommendations. We were able to combine a little shopping along the way. Takayama is not to be missed.
Yuko was an excellent guide who showed us around the major cultural sites of Takayama. Her English was excellent and she had great knowledge of the history of the area. Yoku had a great sense of humour and shared many anecdotes with us.
I had a fantastic time on the Takayama Half‑Day Private Tour. Our guide Akane was fabulous— warm, knowledgeable, and spoke excellent English—making the experience feel personal and tailored to both my friend and myself. We sampled delicious local food and drinks, including sake, and visited beautiful shrines, temples, and key sights around Takayama, making it a truly memorable tour.
Highly recommended! Yuriko-san was so knowledgeable and patient. We learned so much, which enabled us to appreciate the beauty, culture, and history of Takayama even more!
Our tour guide, Micasa-san, had an excellent grasp of Japanese history and culture. He also inquired of our expectations and interests prior to our arrival to enable him to formulate our tour itinerary. He even suggested areas for us to tour on our own prior to our tour. Would recommend Micasa-san for his experience, personality and ability to put together a tour that aligns with the travelers’ expectations.
Amazing tour with an excellent guide. She was very knowledgeable and took us around for longer than the allocated time which was great.
Interesting insights into new and old Takayama. Great walking tour for 4 hours. Yuko was very knowledgeable and well spoken.
We enjoyed our tour with Yuko exploring Takayama. She took us to all the main highlights and then some. A great day enjoyed by all thank you!
Wonderfull tour ! Outstanding guide! Very reccommended. Very professional We could fell takayama like no other. Congratulations !
Our tour guide, Yoshi-san, a sweet and gentle elderly gentleman, was incredibly kind, patient, and deeply knowledgeable about the town. He brought us to a wonderful local ramen shop that we would never have found on our own, and shared the history of Takayama with such warmth and pride that it truly came alive for us. Through his stories and guidance, we were completely charmed by Takayama’s rich history and culture. Thank you so much Yoshi-san for making our trip so memorable!
I had a fabulous time with Yuko my guide. I got to see the gorgeous old town and try hida beef which was absolutely delicious.
We had a great morning with Yuko. We especially love the first hand explanation of the festival floats and the tour also gave us great ideas for how to spend our afternoon.
Yuko was a very gracious host. We learned so much more about Takayama than we would have walking around by ourselves. The festival floats were our favorite and the rest was very informative.
We had a really great 4 hour walking tour around Takayama with Yuko. She was very informative, taking us around the traditional districts and explaining the history clearly and with enthusiasm. Strongly recommend this trip
Yuko was so lovely and knowledgeable — we really enjoyed our tour of Takayama with her! 4hr were enough to enjoy the city.
We spent the morning with Ito who was a great guide. He spoke good English and had a real passion for providing information about Japan. We wondered around for about four hours, tasted things along the way, exploring some sites, history and culture and generally had a good time. It was a just a great morning, and we walked away much the better for the experience. We could have walked around on our own, but then we would not have learnt anywhere near as much.
We had a wonderful tour in Takayama with our guide Lily. She had in-depth knowledge of the history of Takayama. Lily gave us a wonderful introduction to our visit to Takayama.
We recently had a half day private tour with our guide Ryo in Takayama Japan. He spoke excellent English, was a lovely person to spend time with and gave us a deeper insight into how life was in Japan. We shared family histories as we walked around Takayama on a very well thought out route, which took us to all the key sights we had been interested in seeing. He led us through the historical parts of town which we would have missed without his local knowledge. It was a great advantage to have him lead the way and give us detailed information about the places we were visiting, which otherwise would have had little meaning. Ryo also helped us to organise our bus tickets to Hida Minzoka Mira Folk Village and also our onward transport for the following day which was so kind of him and so helpful. Thank you Ryo for an excellent day.
Yuko was great! Very knowledgeable and we felt like we got such a great sense for Takayama history and culture. She was always ready to answer our questions (of which there were many)! She gave us great recommendations and even helped us make restaurant reservations. Highly recommend!
Ito-san was by far the best guide we have had in Japan. At first, we were not sure how he would fill four hours in Takayama, since we thought the town was quite small—but he showed us so much of its charm. He was a wealth of knowledge and brought the city to life with his insights. You can tell he truly loves what he does, as he went above and beyond to share his passion with us. This experience is an absolute must in Takayama. Highly recommended—5 stars and more!
Our guide, Yuki, contacted us in advance, warned about expected showers and picked us up directly from our hotel. She showed us the Town Hall, Jinya, the old part of the city, the shrine and the float’s exposition. It was very interesting and informative. We learned a lot about the region, its history and culture. Thank you Yuki!
Tatsuya Ito did us a fabulous tour. He was so nice the whole time and explained things very good. We recommend booking with him.
An excellent morning with Yuko. We started off at the morning market and then walked through the stunning Sanmachi area with Yuko explaining the history and culture. Next to the Showakan retro museum, and finally to the Hida folk village. It was a hot day and we really appreciated Yuko’s patience and kindness with our slow pace. Thanks again.
Ito is a very nice guide. He knows a lot about the history of Takayama and the festival floats. He is good at explaining about what we see and about the culture and apropriate behaviour when entering a sight. We learned a lot that we will bring with us on the rest of our tour around Japan. The day was nice. Ito spent almost 2 hours extra showing us around. After he send e-mail with link to a ninja café we had been talking about.
Yoshi was fabulous! I enjoyed walking with him and learning about Takayama. He was incredibly knowledgeable, kind and lovely to have as my introduction to the city. I hope you get him for a guide! He took me to an incredible hida beef restaurant that was non touristy!
Pretty interesting, learned a lot about Japanese culture and what life was like several hundred years ago. Our tour guide Yuko was helpful, answering all questions we had.
We had a great experience with our 4 hr walking tour through Takayama. Yuko taught us about Japanese and Takayama history and culture, helped us find personal engraved chopsticks, and even did a little sake tasking. It news a great way to start our vacation adventures with our 14yo daughter in Japan.
Annie was great!! We had such a great time wandering Takayama with her. She was very knowledgeable, and her English was great.
The tour was interesting, lot of information on Takayama and the old district. The guide was good , try to accommodate the tour too my need. Overall very good half day.
