Itinerary
Longshan Temple is located in the heart of west end Taipei, and serves as the religious center of local community. The temple was first established in the 18th century by Chinese immigrants coming to Taipei, who later built Monga District as their settlement for trade and business. In the following years, Longshan Temple went through a series of earthquakes, typhoons, as well as wartime air raids, but has always remained resilient thanks to renovations, enthusiastic believers and the gods’ blessing. Today, Longshan Temple is one of the most iconic buildings of historic Taipei and a popular destination for sightseeing among foreign visitors and worshipers.
Bopiliao, literally meaning “skin-peeling” was once the commercial center of northern Taipei where Chinese immigrants conducted trade with the indegineous community. During its most glorious years, you would find its street filled with hostels, shops and public bath houses to accomodate the traders and local residents. Here you will also find the best-preserved architecture from Qing dynasty China in Taipei, some of its features have even been incorporated into modern Taiwanese style!
Originally constructed as a public market, Ximen Red House features strong architectural characteristics of Colonial Japan. Following the end of World War II and retreat of Japanese rule, the building was turned into a theater and became a hub for the hidden LGBTQ community in Taipei. In recent years, as Taiwan embraces a more diverse and multicultural trend in society, Ximen Red House has become a popular venue of the vibrant social movements taking place in Taiwan. Midway break included.
Only a few steps away from the dazzling Ximending is the Presidential Office - the political center of Taiwan. Established in 1919, the building was initially designed to house the Office of the Governor-General of Taiwan during the Japanese Colonization. Following bombing throughout World War II and the arrival of the Republic of China (R.O.C.), the building was restored as the Presidential Office in 1950. In appearance, the red bricks, western-styled architecture and its 130 meter-wide facade facing the spacious Ketagalan Boulevard made it a favorable landmark among visitors and protesters alike - you might even be able to witness some political activities here yourself!
Formerly established in 1908 as “Taihoku New Park” during the Japanese colonial period, it was built as the first European-styled park in Taiwan. In 1947, the park became the scene of protest against the Kuomintang-led R.O.C. government. The action later led to a chain of events that is now referred to as the February 28 (228) Incident, which led to severe actions from the Nationalist government, and resulted in Taiwan's period of White Terror under thirty-eight years of Martial Law. The park was eventually renamed “228 Peace Memorial Park” in dedication and acknowledgement of the past misconduct of the government.
Chiang Kai-shek (C.K.S.) Memorial Hall is a national monument, landmark and tourist attraction erected in memory of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, the former President of the Republic of China (R.O.C.) from 1948 to 1975. The construction started following Chiang’s death and was completed five years later. The architectural theme centered around imperial Chinese style and the life of Chiang as a political figure. Our guides will also tell you the long road of how people of Taiwan went from worshipping Chiang in the past as the “great national leader” to seeing him as a symbol of an authoritarian regime during the Martial Law era.

Fantastic what a wonderful way to explore a city on a free walking tour and paying a tip to the host! Alvin was a fantastic host who was knowledgable and easygoing. Very informative tour which took around 3.5 hours start to end with a few short breaks! I highly recommend this tour!
Great experience - saw lots of interesting places. Guide told us lots about the history of the city & the country.
Kyle was AMAZING! His knowledge and passion for Taipei, made our tour exceptional. We knew very little about Taiwan’s history and its current contemporary political status, however, Kyle explained everything in an easy-to-understand manner, and objectively. He also showed genuine interest in getting to know the group members, further highlighting his suitability for his job as a tour guide.
We had such a fun and educational experience! If you love walking, exploring different places in Taipei, and learning about Taiwan’s rich history and culture, this tour is definitely worth booking. Our tour guide, Alvin, was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and energetic. He made every stop interesting and brought the stories behind each place to life. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to discover Taipei beyond the usual tourist spots!
Fu was an excellent guide. He's English is very good and he provided very interesting and very informative things that made the tour.
Joining the Like It Formosa Taipei Historic Walking Tour was easily one of the highlights of our trip. Over three hours, our guide, Dan, walked us through 300 years of Taiwanese history—from the traditional roots of Longshan Temple and Bopiliao Block to the Japanese colonial influence, the 228 Peace Memorial Park, and CKS Memorial Hall. Dan was informative, insightful, and incredibly engaging, making complex historical nuances easy to understand. The ice cream break was also a nice touch to recharge. Highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Taipei for the first time!
Dan was an incredible guide. Knowledgeable and funny. He made 3 hours feel like 1 hour 👍
We had a very friendly and knowledgeable guide, Jason. We learned a lot and really enjoyed the tour.
The timing was changed to 30 mins earlier. Due to hectic schedule I forgot and turned up at the booking time. Tried catching up with the group and called the agent but he wasn’t helpful and in the end we didn’t get to be with the tour. The agent can’t even have the tourgudir contact us to see how we can meet them. We went to the next two stops to try to find them but to no avail. All these was under the hot sun and my husband fell sick after.
Amazing tour guide. Mable ( I think her name started with M) has been a wonderful guide : funny , witty and very thoughtful throughout her guide. She really made the entire journey super enjoyable. She also taught us all the traditions in the temples and we get to try
Excellent historical introduction!
Thanks a lot, Dan! It was a amazing tour :)
Mabel was fantastic and fun! The information she shared was plentiful and sincere, helping us understand Taiwan better by learning about its history. Would have willingly paid for this walking tour of Taipei city!!!
Betty, our tour guide was fun, efficient and informative. This is a great tour to go on to see a lot in only a few hours. Highly recommend especially if you only have a day or two in Taipei!!
Fu and Dan were absolutely wonderful. We enjoyed learning the history of all the sites we visited. Thank you for a great day
I had a fantastic walking tour of Old Town Tainan with Shona. She was extremely knowledgeable and shared the history of the city in a way that was both engaging and easy to understand. We got to see many historic sites and learned about the local culture and traditions that we would have completely missed on our own. The pace of the tour was perfect—never rushed, with plenty of time to take in the sights and ask questions. Shona also spoke excellent English, making everything clear. Her passion for Tainan's history really came through and made the experience even more memorable. I highly recommend this tour with Shona to anyone visiting Tainan who wants a deeper understanding of the city's rich history and culture.
It was a very hot day and young people in the group tended to walk faster - but everyone was nice and kind- the walk was paced well - starting with a temple, through old Taiwan, an icecream break, then the administrative area, peace sculpture, ending at the memorial across from the national library. Alvin - the guide was knowledgeable and discussed the geography, history and political paths taken by the country- well worth the cost
Shona was our tour guide and she was an amazing tour guide. She explained everything so clearly and her energy was so amazing! We had the most amazing time and we learned so so much it was truly incredible! Shona was so lovely and we had the best time! We learned about so much of the old history and culture!
Excellent way to learn about the history and see places you might want to come back to. I did the Golden Age free walking tour. Our guide Marie was perfect, spoke great English, was very friendly and knowledgeable, and answered all my questions (I had many). I would recommend this tour as a great way to get oriented with Taipei.
American but parents are taiwanese. I thought the tour was terrific, was with SUSIE and ANY. Well paced. Bathroom breaks, quick shopping breaks. Highly recommend
We went on a private historic walking tour with Vicky on our first full day in Taiwan. It was the perfect way to start our trip because we learned so much from this exceptional tour, including the political history of Taiwan and customs in temples. Vicky was informative, well organized (with graphs & other visual aides), and super friendly. She answered all of our questions and even gave us food recommendations. We enjoyed this wonderful tour and highly recommend it.
This tour was such a great way to gain insight into Taipei’s history and culture. Our guides were Yuan and Luke, and they were both so educational and passionate about sharing stories and information with us. We asked so many questions - including our curious questions about politics, and they answered them very openly. The tour lasted 3 hours, there were plenty of breaks away from the sun and lots of interesting stories that were shared (things you wouldn’t know unless you knew a local Taiwanese person). Highly recommend!
We did this tour with Teresa and I-tan. Both were excellent. Well organized, good information, fun stories, well-paced, and with well thought out stops in places with AC as it was a hot day. The tour was about three hours so be ready to be on your feet for a while. Definitely recommended.
Thanks to Luke and Yuan for a very informative tour and the history of Taiwan
Luke was amazing. We really loved the tour and all the fun facts!!
Amazing! Luke was so informative
Amy and Jason were my guides, and they were both amazing. Amy and Jason were both happy to answer any question we had, and they were always energetic and helpful. I really enjoyed getting to learn about Taiwan’s history with them and gain a broader perspective on Taipei. I would highly recommend this tour!
Pei was my tour guide, she was exceptional! She arrived earlier than scheduled for my tour at the designated spot and made sure I was prepared with water and sunscreen before the tour. She was very friendly and answered all my questions. She gave me food and stop recommendations and after the tour was done, she walked with me to a local dumping restaurant and helped order for me since I do not speak mandarin. 5 stars! Thank you again Pei 🌟💛
Great walking tour, some of the old, mid and new. Perhaps break up the political talk and pick locations for shorter descriptions. Recommended.
A very comprehensive and informative tour of historical, political and cultural Taipei. We covered the most important sights with Winnie and Will who were both very knowledgeable and interesting
Great tour! I would recommend this as a way to become acquainted with old Taipei. The Lungshan Temple part of the tour was the highlight for me. Knowing all the intricate details of how the Taiwanese Buddhist temples work, made this and the others we visited way more interesting. Mid way through the tour we stopped to talk political history. This was obviously very interesting in Taiwan! But if I was to make one small suggestion I would say find a more picturesque and shady spot for this part of the tour. I loved it, but our kids (10 and 13) struggled a bit for this part. We booked this tour through a booking site and as such paid a booking fee. But this is actually tip based! You can book it through their website for free and tip your guide at the end. As an extra tip, the tour finishes near the best dumpling place we went to for our whole trip. It is called Hang Zhou Xiao Long Bao. DONT MISS IT!
Very good experience with the tour guide Yuan and Jason. I highly recommend this walking tour to learn of Taiwan's history.
The guide did not show up, and booking this was a waste of time and money. No response to request to refund booking fee.
Booked this historical tour for Sunday April 5, 2026. No communication from the vendor prior to the day of tour and No Show by the tour guide(s) on day of tour at 10 am. 30 people waiting for 30 minutes and had to leave and DIY.
Fu and Will led an informative and entertaining tour of historic Taipei. I appreciated their expertise and local knowledge and ended the walk much better informed.
30 people were waiting at the starting point and our guide never showed. We waited 30 minutes before we dispersed. No answer to phone calls. Chatted with Trip Advisor and they couldn’t get through either. I’m thinking because the price is so low that most people won’t bother complaining. But 30 people had their vacation disrupted by a no-show guide.
I loved this tour so much! It was a very well paced 3 hour tour about the chronological timeline of Taiwanese history. I appreciated the organization/way it was presented and having some free time at each location to look around independently, while also learning a lot from our guides Frances and Teresa. Frances and Teresa were awesome and helped ensure our tour group felt like a group of friends! I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Taipei, especially on your first or second day, to get a sense of the city!
Frances and Luke have tried to make Taiwan’s history understandable and relatable tonus. We learned a bit about politics and Japanese history. We also learned about what one does in these temples. Recommend this if you need a crash course on Taiwanese history.
We couldn’t find the meet point. Messaged guide with no response. Didn’t get to go
My husband, 17 yr old son and I enjoyed the Taipei Historic Walking Tour in Taipei. We were looking for a great introduction to the highlights of Taipei and this was it. Our two guides told great stories, taught us a ton in 3 hours and answered all of our questions. We learned a lot about the history of Taiwan as well as the political situation. This was an exceptional tour! A few things I enjoyed about the logistics of the tour. With two guides, there was always a guide at the back of the group ensuring no-one was left behind. My boys tend to linger, so it was a relaxing for me to make sure they would not get lost. I also appreciated that the guide used a microphone and speaker. They found great spots for the group to stop & gather when they were speaking. I never had trouble hearing & keeping up with the guide even though we were with a large group. Like It Formosa's Historic Walking Tour is a great overview of both Taipei and Taiwan. I am glad we joined this tour at the beginning of our trip. It gave us great context for the rest of our adventures in Taiwan.
Alice and Alvin were very good tour guides.Very clear and informative. We learnt alot. And a delicious ice cream on the way.Thank you.
Great tour, Jessica & Mabel were friendly well spoken and knowledgeable. Definitely recommend for anyone’s first time to Taipei.
This tour was excellent! Great sites and very informative about the history of Taiwan.
Susie and yuan were awesome. We learned a lot about Taiwan’s culture and history. They Shared Interesting stories. They were polite, respectful and funny. I would definitely recommend this walking tour.
Susie and Yuan were wonderful tour guides and walked us through both traditional and modern areas in Taipei. They provided thoughtful stories and insights and we have a greater appreciation of the culture and history of Taiwan! An excellent walking tour! Thank you❤️
We had a great experience and learned so much from our guides. Thoroughly recommend to anyone visiting Taipei.
Shona was our guide and she was the absolute best! Super informative, kind and so welcoming. Just great vibes all around and made things really relaxed and fun.
Great tour around historic and interesting parts of Taipei. Very knowledgeable guides made the tour both informative and fun.
Excellent tour and excellent guides! Importantly, both guides are really local. Tripadvisor should very clearly state that it is a "free" tour that can be booked for free on other websites (The first part is kind of obvious by the price). Regardless, even if you are quite generous at the end, the tour itself is a great deal.
