Itinerary
Yehliu is a cape on Taiwan’s northern coast best known for Yehliu Geopark, where sea erosion has shaped honeycomb and mushroom rocks such as the iconic Queen’s Head and Dragon’s Head. The area is mostly flat but offers little shade, so sun protection is advised during summer.
Shifen Waterfall is Taiwan’s most famous cascade, fed by the Keelung River, and measures about 20 meters (66 feet) high and 40 meters (131 feet) wide. Reaching the viewing platform takes about a 30-minute walk, partly shaded and crossing a suspension bridge.
This old street is right next to Shifen Station in the Pingxi area, where an active railway line runs straight through the market. Visitors launch sky lanterns on the tracks, pausing whenever a train rumbles by.
Feel transported to this former gold-mining mountain town—once built by the Japanese and now a maze of history-rich lanes and alleys. Most of the charming streets are stairways lined with snack stalls and teahouses, and they can get quite crowded. (Tip: If you’d like to experience Jiufen at sunset or dusk, book a departure after 11:00 AM. This will make Jiufen the final stop, giving you time to enjoy the sunset views and evening lights.)

We covered a lot of distance and got to see varied sites, from a geological park, to an old coal town, to a bustling traditional market, and a waterfall. Our guide Bubbles was knowledgeable and flexible in accommodating our plans. His tour was a good balance of time with him showing us things and explaining them and also free time to ourselves. We got to see a lot more of Taiwan on our limited schedule than we would have without him and this tour.
If you’re looking for a day tour outside Taipei City that combines light walking, the charm of Taiwan’s old towns, and a fun family activity, look no further! Our guide, Vincent, was absolutely fantastic! He did an excellent job accommodating the different personalities, interests, and needs of everyone in our group. The entire experience felt personalized, making everything—from pick-up to sightseeing—seamless, convenient, and enjoyable for everyone. What made the tour particularly special was that it felt less like being on an organized tour and more like spending the day with a friend who just happens to know all the best hidden gems in Taiwan! Vincent also knew exactly where to take us for the best local restaurants and coffee shops, and he gave us wonderful recommendations on what food to try and what goodies to bring home. He even takes great photos! Overall, it was such a lovely and well-curated experience. Vincent truly made the day memorable, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this tour and particularly, Vincent as a driver and tour guide to anyone visiting Taiwan, especially families looking to explore beyond Taipei.
I booked this tour as a solo traveler, and was so fortunate to have Nicolas Ying as my private guide! He was friendly, engaging and informative, and served as an excellent companion and guide for this experience. And the tour itself was awesome with a great variety of experiences. I highly recommend this tour!
My family and I had a great tour but our tour guide, bubbles, was even better! He was very attentive and friendly. Highly recommend.
We travel extensively and have a lot of experience working with guides. Unfortunately this experience really missed the mark. For the positives: James was on time, drove nicely, and was overall polite. However, my husband and I did not enjoy our tour. For starters, the car we were driven around in was a working cab (fine but not what I was expecting) and also smelled bad 😢. I think it was a mothball smell, which I personally find to be strong and unpleasant. The thing that we noticed most was that the James‘s only communication style was monologuing rather than true conversation. His English also was very difficult to understand. He was not able to respond to our questions with answers when we found room to ask them. A notably weird component of this tour was also him taking photos of us on his personal phone without asking, including what seemed to be me by myself. He did send us some of these photos/videos, but I would have far preferred to have him use one of our phones (or Fujifilm camera). He also did a poor job communicating what we were doing next and what we might need while doing it. I love to take pictures and I felt rushed and dismissed at certain points. Also, while guiding us, he routinely would walk 1 to 200 feet in front of us not seeming to care where we were or what we were doing. I found this to be rude and off-putting. At several points, he would leave us and give somewhat vague instructions about walking in a direction until we found him. Leaving us walking in the rain without umbrellas, which he had. It was an uncomfortable and awkward day. I had seen other reviews that the guides would offer recommendation spots for good food. So I asked him in the middle of our eight hour day for recommendations of where we should eat. He mentioned a dumpling place and I responded that I didn’t really want to eat dumplings that I wanted a rice dish. He ignored me and took us to the worst restaurant we have eaten at so far in Taiwan, which basically only had dumplings on the menu. Also which had no ambiance or comfort. He then left us there with no ability to communicate with the staff. For any women reading this review, it honestly felt like I was on a terrible eight hour first date. I do not think he was intentionally unkind, or unprofessional. But I cannot lie and say that we had a good experience. We even had a tour booked with the same company for tomorrow and canceled it within the first hour of being on the tour. Tread carefully with this company.
Informative, fun, and definitely memorable! Geopark, Jiufen, Pingxi, and sky lanterns-in one amazing day! Thank you Jackson! You are the best!!!
Jack was a fantastic guide. Beautiful scenery, amazing views, crazy fun visit to JiuFen with great food and flying lanterns. Amazing way to spend a day.
We had a great experience with James, he was very knowledgeable about Taiwan and it's history and knew how to maximize our time at each location. He is a very safe driver and each pickup and drop off went smoothly with him. He made our day trip convenient and worry free. Thanks James!
Our tour guide, Alex Meng, was excellent - knowledgeable, helpful, personable, and funny. His communication was outstanding, and he contacted us the day before to answer any questions and ensure we felt prepared. The itinerary was fantastic, taking us from Shifen Waterfall and lantern release to magical Jiufen and the breathtaking YehLiu GeoPark. He shared fascinating stories, offered valuable insights, and showed us the best photo stops. We learned so much and created wonderful memories. We highly recommend Alex for an unforgettable Taiwan experience!
The tour was really interesting. Our guide, Jennifer, did everything to make us feel listened and she knew exactly how to do it. It was a great time.
We had a wonderful experience during our day trip. We visited the geo park, Jiufen, and released lanterns at Shifen. We loved the private transportation, as well as the pickup and drop off from our hotel. Our guide Vincent was very knowledgeable and helpful throughout our journey!
Fantastic tour of Northern Taiwan with Roger! Visiting Jiufen, Yehliu Geopark, and Pingxi was an incredible experience. Each destination offered something unique, from stunning coastal scenery and fascinating rock formations to charming old streets and local culture. The itinerary was well planned, with plenty of time to explore and enjoy each stop without feeling rushed. A wonderful way to experience Northern Taiwan in one day. Highly recommended!
Had a wonderful day with Samuel. Top notch guide with best English I have encountered in Asia - he was in international business for 30 years before becoming a guide. Itinerary was great but challenging for 80 year old. Samuel adjusted things to meet our needs including eliminating the last stop at our request and finding us a wonderful restaurant for a Shabu dinner in a village outside Taipei - and he also showed us the ins and outs of such a dinner. Great guide and an interesting tour.
This was an excellent tour that efficiently let you see several interesting sites just outside of Taipei city. It might be wise to switch the order of sites so that you are visiting Jiufen first in hopes that it will not be so busy. My Tour Guide Steven did a great job navigating the road traffic as well as the busy sites that we were going to see.
Guide Danny did a very good job for my parents.very responsible and kind to bring them around.highly recommended Danny!
Sam was simply the best. Friendly, considerate, knowledgeable and caring. He made the day fun. He was a 10 on a scale of 1 to 5.
Our guide was James. He was knowledgeable about Taiwan history, helpful, and good at driving. He also recommended us many eating places in Taipei.
Would definitely recommend this tour. The Geopark and Jiulin are great to visit and a private tour make it possible for you to manage the day and edit it. As a solo traveler, I would have preferred a guide more involved and less feeling like a driver. Maybe my expectations were not aligned, we had a great day, but it did feel I could have learned more and interactions were limited to the basics.
My friend and I had an amazing day touring Yehliu, Juifen and Shifen from Taipei. Paul was an amazing guide and driver, he knew all the best spots, took us to a great restaurant for lunch, went above and beyond in making sure we had an amazing day!!! Further, Paul was very knowledgeable, but also kept things light and fun, plus took great pictures. Lastly, Paul was great at communicating prior to the trip, and following up after, making sure everything went smoothly. It was perfect, and I would have no hesitation recommending Paul and YOLO Taiwan to friends. Thanks again!!!
My husband and I had a fantastic day with our tour guide, Nicolas Ying. Nicolas started communicating with us a few days before the tour and was well prepared for the day: umbrellas, bottled water, and a carefully timed agenda. His English was very, very good too. Our tour was on a busy Saturday, but Nicolas easily navigated us through the traffic and busy attractions. Be prepared to wear your most comfortable shoes. You will walk a lot and there are several staircases. We came home with a ton of stunning photos and videos, thanks to our experienced tour guide who knew just where to stand for the perfect angle. This tour does not disappoint and gets you outside of the city for some unique sightseeing. Highly recommend!
See everything that Roger Lo suggests. And then have him as your guide and mentor. He is the personification of the term, “professional.” He made every facet of the tour special.
We both had a terrific day. Enjoyed every destination and a delicious lunch. Our guide was courteous, efficient, knowledgeable and took a caring, considerate approach helping us cope with the excessive heat. Thank you.
Our tour guide, Steven was great! He checked in the day prior, was on time the next day. Safe driver and went at our pace. Every stop was truly special. We visited during the Autumn New Moon festival so every place was PACKED. But we made the most of it. The last city (Jiufren), although a bit strenuous was worth all the stairs. The sunset view is breathtaking.
Thank you so much, Vincent Lee, for your hospitality and for being our guide! We really appreciated how well you took care of us and your attention to every detail was outstanding. This was the best day of our vacation so far. And you are such a great photographer! Thank you once again.
Ben was an excellent guide. This was a fabulous way to spend the day and experience nature, old towns, and culture. Highly recommend.
Our guide, Steven, was friendly, very organized, and communicated prior to our tour with a schedule and what to bring. We scheduled our pickup at noon in order to see the sunset at Jiufen. It was very crowded there and you'll ascend about 200 stairs to get to the main street. We only did the first view of the falls; if you want to go to additional viewpoints, consider an 11 am pickup. Steven was a safe and efficient driver. We're on our 70s and he was very considerate of our abilities. He knew how to get us around with in sites efficiently as well. Plus, he was a great photographer! He answered every question we had about the sites and about Taiwan in general. We were very happy with our tour and our time spent with Steven. The Geopark was unique and interesting and the lantern launch was great fun. nyone going with him will be very fortunate!
It was really great if you like to go sightseeing seeing. Maybe get away from the city a bit and enjoy the day with nature. Our guide was awesome as well. James Chan bought us snacks and took a bunch of photos and videos for us. Very informative as well. I highly reccomend.
Wow I’ve never been so catered to by a tour guide before! Vincent thinks of everything from window shades, umbrellas, videos explaining things etc. He’s so thoughtful and knowledgeable ! He also made sure I captured the perfect photos and stopped at a few sites not in the itinerary. We saw so many great sites and I learned so about Taiwan!
Ben was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. It was an amazing tour and well planned. I really enjoyed my visits to all the sites.
Excellent tour. Our tour guide, Steven, was friendly and knowledgeable. His communication was always prompt in leading up to the tour and he was flexible in a last minute change to the pickup location. I highly recommend the tour.
Everything from start to finish is covered, very easy to navigate and able to see a bit more of Taiwan. Jackson was a great guide, especially with the wet weather, and we still manged to see and do eveything our group was interested in. Great day!
Chino-Chiao was our guide during this one day trip. She is super nice, professional and caring. She really listened to what we wanted to see and do and change the schedule according to our preferences. Totally recommended.
Hicks was our tour guide and he was accommodating to my family. Highly recommend, very timely, and knowledgeable.
It was an amazing experience! We really enjoyed the tour plan, everything was timed perfectly and the English explanations and conversations with our tour guide Nicolas Ying were very nice! We are very happy with the experience, all the tickets were included, the recommended food was delicious and we got to see little details that we would have missed otherwise. Much recommended!
Mr. Vincent - our tour guide is very enthusiastic, thoughtful, and attentive to every guest’s need, even the smallest details. His broad knowledge of society and culture helps guests learn more about Taiwan. His photography skills are also a great bonus!
Henry was a great guide and was very engaged and accommodating
Alex was our guide. He was professional, knowledgable, thoughtful, courteous, and more. He exceeded our expectations and made our day long private tour splurge (for us as we usually guide ourselves using public transportation) an elevated, relaxing, and enjoyable experience. I would be very pleased to have Alex again should I return to Taiwan and book another guided tour. Thank you Alex.
It was our first time going to most of the places on the itinerary. Jackson was a superb host and guide. It’s a great ‘finishing’ trip during our time in Taiwan as well. We started the trip at 1 pm because we wanted to be able to see Jiufen in the evening. Even though it’s in the peak of summer, the weather cooperated beautifully. It rained in the morning before we started our trip and by the time we got to Yeliu, it was overcast with the sun peaking through here and there. It was also breezy, and the same goes for the rest of the day. Jackson showed us many of the best spots to take photos and also took photos and videos of us. We made a stop to get some bubble teas along the way. 🧋He also took us to a great spot for dinner up in Jiufen. He’s knowledgeable, friendly, and really cater to what we wanted. We would definitely use him again when we return to Taiwan. Thank you, Jackson! 🙏
Hicks Wang was such a great guide and really made our day special. He was very knowledgeable, friendly, and easy to talk to, and his English was excellent. He also came prepared with umbrellas and water, which was really thoughtful and made things much more comfortable for us. He even went the extra mile and treated my kids to boba tea and some local sweets, which they absolutely loved!! We had such a fun and memorable day with Hicks and would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a great guide. Thank you, Hicks, for making our day so enjoyable and memorable!
I traveled to Taiwan for one day and decided to book this a tour, and I loved it. Sean was very accommodating, patient and shared so much information about Taiwan which I loved.
Jack, our driver and guide, was amazing. He was polite, informative, ready to answer any question and attend any need. Despite the extremely hot temperatures, this was an amazing day trip.
This was a really move was to get out of the city. Ben was wonderful accommodating all our requests , from slow pace to frequent restroom stops to vegetarian food. We were a mixed age family group from elderly parents to young adults and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the trip.
Our guide could not have been more friendly. He was always prepared with ways to make our day more enjoyable (water, umbrellas, photo opportunities). The sites we visited were outstanding and the guided tour was a great way to enjoy them.
I booked a private tour with my family thru Viator on the afternoon before the tour date by early evening, I was contacted via WhatsApp by Paul Y. our tour guide. He confirmed time and location for pick up and everything went smooth the following morning . Paul was great at explaining what we would be doing and how long it would take to get from Place to Place. His car was very comfortable and he was very pleasant to be around with even my younger son would run up alongside him during our tour given the fact that me and my wife and older son were a bit slower. We had a great time touring all of the various landmarks and Paul explained the history behind each location. He’s very pleasant to talk to and informative about the location and other things regarding life in Taiwan . Paul also gave us tips on foods to try out at each location, which is great as it saved us a headache of figure out where to get snacks. As our tour drew to the end , I wish I had known him before when I first arrived in Taipei as I would have consider other tours. Overall would definitely contact Paul if I were to visit again and would highly recommend him to friends who would ever visit TAiwan. Thank you, Paul for a great time!
If you are in Taipei this is a trip you must take - our guide Jacky was great - private is the way to go. Jacky made sure we had a great time.
Nicolas Ying was great as our guide - really enjoyable day and he had lots of knowledge to share. Was bubbly and jokey the whole day. Very informative. Lots of fun.
Excellent private tour to Jiufen, Yehliu Geopark, and Pingxi! Our guide was friendly, knowledgeable, and made the day enjoyable from start to finish. The itinerary was well planned, the transportation was comfortable, and we had plenty of time to explore each destination. A memorable experience with outstanding service. Highly recommended!
FABULOUS tour thanks to our outstanding guide, Vincent Hsu!! He was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and accommodating. Despite the heat, humidity, and our jet lag, he kept us totally engaged throughout the entire day. He was knowledgeable about the history, culture, and details of each specific site we visited, in addition to Taipei at large. Thanks to Vincent, we enjoyed an extraordinary introduction to Taipei, making our trip so memorable. We highly recommend him!
Our tour was outstanding with Hicks Wang. He was very informative at each stop with excellent suggestions on where to take photos, history of sites, and English was outstanding. We highly recommend him and most definitely take another tour with him.
