We were a total of six on this tour. Although it was a drizzly day and the ride to our destination was bone jarring at times, we were comfortable in our covered 4x4. Leonie, our driver and guide, kept us well informed along the way, and even entertained us with her singing and ukulele playing. The rains the previous night meant we got to see many waterfalls even if the skies were mostly cloudy. It would have been a magnificent ride had we had sunny skies.

Itinerary
Step 1: The tour starts with the east coast of the island, with its beautiful black sandy beaches and famous surf spots! Throughout the route, there will be 5-10 minute stops for taking photos, information given by the guide, etc.
STEP 2: Discover Tahiti from a unique angle! The tour begins with the east coast of the island, with its beautiful black sand beaches and famous surf spots, before entering the heart of the Papenoo Valley, Tahiti’s largest valley. This immersion in the lush nature of the island will offer you the opportunity to discover its essence in an authentic and unique way. The tour is commented with stops at several remarkable sites, offering breathtaking scenery up to Caldera, an extinct volcanic crater that gave birth to Tahiti Nui. You will be amazed by the majestic waterfalls, lush green mountains, lush vegetation, and local flora and fauna. The guide will share fascinating stories about myths and legends, marae, and the island’s rich cultural and historical heritage.
STEP 3: After traveling halfway around the island and reaching Caldera, the excursion continues with a visit to the authentic village of Fare Hape, a place full of history where you will discover the traditional life of the inhabitants of Tahiti (marae, fare, Tahitian oven, etc.). Before departure, it is strongly recommended to bring a sandwich or snack for lunch. For this we will stop at a supermarket where you can buy what you need. Lunch will take place in an authentic and picturesque setting in the village of Fare Hape, where you can enjoy a well-deserved break. It is also strongly recommended to bring a personal bottle of water or bottles of water, to stay well hydrated during the excursion. A little surprise awaits you to immerse yourself more in Polynesian culture for a moment of conviviality and sharing.
STEP 4: The adventure continues with a stop at the tunnel connecting the East Coast to the West Coast, offering spectacular views of Vaihiria, Tahiti’s only natural high-altitude lake. You will then cross the whole island before returning to the starting point.

You will a part of Tahiti few people see!!! Road is rugged but well worth it. Our guide Leonini was fantastic
The weather & the island conspired against us. Pouring rain, flooding river and highway closures due to landslides, but Leonie managed to make a day of it. We did go quite a ways up Papenoo valley, but not to the village or onto the west side. The road to cross the river was 20 feet under water and raging down stream. Horrible driving, but great kayaking! Our attempt to drive on the highway to the west coast to go up route 20, the west side access, was thwarted by a landslide near the Iti peninsula. It it was a Tahitian experience!
Beautiful and interesting scenery over some rugged mountainous terrain. The waterfalls in particular were spectacular. 4x4 river crossings and tight turns over treacherous roads were thrilling, but always safe with some first class off road driving by our guide Leone !
The scenery is beautiful but this is a long and arduous drive completely off road in the back of a truck. In places there was barely even a road to be off ans it was unnerving at times......We had several stops for photos but very little in the way of commentary along the way as there was no speaker system in the back of the truck and the guide was in the cab driving so I don't feel we got a lot of information. Only one toilet stop at lunchtime too which may not suit everyone. Fruit is provided as a snack but no lunch or drinks - there is a supermarket stop to purchase your own. I can't say I'd recommend this if it's your only tour in Tahiti but if you've seen everything and want something different and your prepared the views are very very impressive
The tour runs on time. The guide is friendly and knowledgeable. By far best safari tour available in Tahiti. We saw so much more than we ever imagined and she played the ukulele for us! Also, we weren’t as crowded as the other tours we saw. Such a great experience. Highly recommend this tour.
So much fun and a great day out!
A very interesting day with engaging and informative guiding. A pleasure to meet Leonie and new guide Thierry who looked after us so well. The trip is a long day, driving on very bumpy tracks but worth the effort. Take a raincoat, sensible shoes and bring your own lunch and water. It must be stunning when it's not raining!
Our trip to Tahiti was extremely last minute with no plans. I booked this trip at 3 o’clock in the morning. We were promptly picked up at our hotel as it said on the booking. Leonie was our guide. She was extremely respectful, kind, courteous, and informative! Stunning trip we would 100% do again! It is a 4x4 road that is bumpy, but we truly enjoyed being able to stand up in the back of the truck and look out at all the incredible views! Leonie went above and beyond as she helped us navigate where to go for the next few days of our time in Tahiti even taking us to rent a car! I’ve never in my life had a tour guide go so far out of their way to make our trip incredible! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!
The tour was a little liger then 8 hours. Our guide, the owner, gave us so much information about the culture. I enjoyed that. Also taught us how to make a head piece out of a fern. Made stops so we could get good pics. Stopped at the market to get lunch. She also had cut fruits for us.
Stunning views of the valley, our guide Leonie went above and beyond stopping us at points of interest and telling stories of the Tahitian culture and history. She took her time and allowed us to completely immerse ourselves in the beautiful valley. Roads can be rough which creates for one wild ride that you could not experience on your own. You are In good hands with Leonie, she is an experienced driver and guide and really cares for your experience. I would recommend booking with 4x4 safari Hereakimanu Tahiti.
Overall, a nice and enjoyable experience. The jungle and the heart of Tahiti are truly beautiful and impressive and we could never have explored them on our own. Unfortunately, our guide’s English was quite limited, so we received very little information about the local culture and traditions. We saw other 4x4 tours where the guides were explaining much more, so offering an English tour when very little can actually be explained is a bit disappointing. Still, we had fun with the group and really enjoyed the stunning scenery. Lunch is not included, but there is a supermarket stop to buy something, and some fruit is provided.
The tour has a max of 8 people. That is important because there are only 8 seats with 8 seatbelts. They packed 10 of us in. It was terribly uncomfortable for 8 hours. It was also unsafe because no one could wear a seatbelt (if 8 of us wore them, the other two would have no place to sit). We believe this came about due to a comical/tragic level of disorganization. We booked our tour 6 months in advance and received a cofirmation number right away. Closer to the trip, they reached out asking us to confirm details such as hotel, pickup time and so on. All that is normal. Then, they reached out again days later for us to confirm the exact same info again. It was clear that they thought they were reaching out to us for the first time. Several additional baffling back and forths occurred. Finaly, the day we were coming in, they reached out basically asking who we were, when we wanted to go, and needing all of the same detailed information yet again. Note that we had never changed anything in the six months (no change to date and tour time, no change in hotel, no change in literally anything). I strongly recommend not using this company.
Our guide was very poor. He spoke little English while everyone on the tour spoke English. Our tour was supposed to be 8 hours and turned into a 9 hour and 50 minute tour and we didn’t even go completely across the island as advertised. The guide did not engage with us because he spoke limited English and we had about ten other tourists 4x4 vehicles pass by us on the road because he drove so slow. We were extremely disappointed in this tour and would not recommend to anyone. TOTAL WASTE OF $240.00!
We had a fun very full day on the 4x4 excursion in Tahiti. The guide was awesome and great driver in a rugged environment. We loved the views of the natural beauty of Tahiti and learning about it's culture and history.
Really amazing tour! The Jeep safari was an incredible way to explore Tahiti, with beautiful scenery, amazing viewpoints, and a great adventure through the island. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Tahiti!
This adventure was a highlight of our trip to French Polynesia! Our family (parents and adult children) had a blast! The ride was so much fun, adventurous, and scenic beyond belief. We’d highly recommend this to anyone traveling to Tahiti!
Exeprienced tourguide with lots of interesting information about the region
FANTASTIC! Our guide, Leonie, is the owner of the business and she personally made the trip most memorable. She is passionate about Tahiti and went to great lengths to share her knowledge and love for the country and its beautiful nature. Our group of five guests felt like we won the lottery in getting Leonie as our guide! We just arrived in Tahiti to enjoy the water and the beaches, but taking this journey to the mountainous interior was spectacular, and we would highly recommend!
This tour was such a special experience! Léonie is a warm, caring, insightful guide with an abundance of knowledge on the history, culture and lore of Tahiti. The trip is beautiful, climbing high through the Papenoo valley in a Safari style truck with panoramic views at every stop. We learnt so much about the history and techniques of ancient and modern Tahitian Culture. Each stop had new stories and it's clear that Léonie has a passion for sharing Tahiti. It's also clear that Léonie has a passion for sharing kindness! She gave amazing recommendations for future experiences (which we highly enjoyed!) and she answered every question that we could come up with. Make sure to book in ahead of time as this tour is very popular for a reason, and you definitely don't want to miss it!
This was a really good excursion. We saw a lot of really cool things and learned a ton about the culture too. The owner of the company, Leonie drove us around. She took care to spend time sharing her culture with us. We had a fantastic time.
Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable. It was scenic, fun, and a great way to learn more about Tahiti!
Manual was an excellent guide and driver. He really helped us learn about the indigenous plants and medicines and culture. He shared his history which was fascinating how far back he can trace. The road is insanely bumpy so be warned. We stopped at a restaurant for lunch which was nice but if you are a vegetarian you may want to bring your own
Great views of island going through the mountains and valleys. It was an awesome adventure. I would highly recommend this excursion.
Beautiful scenery but hang on for the rugged ride. Guide friendly and courteous. The stops for food at the grocery store very helpful. The lunch picnic spot was a relaxing break halfway through the drive. Highly recommend.
This tour was absolutely fabulous and we would highly recommend this tour! Our guide T’mauve (not sure spelling) was the most knowledgeable and we learned so much about the Tahitian culture. He educated us on all the nature and all the beauty of Tahiti!
The guides Temaeva was excellent. However due to landslide the road is blocked. We only went half way. Tunnel id blocked. You don't see lake Vahiria. You don't go out other side of island at Mahina. We didn't e en to to viewpoint at Maroto Restaurant. Very disappointed.
In Pape’ete you do your customers a disservice by only allowing a limited number of pickup points and then not telling the providers that that's what you have done. Every single one of them assumed that we were booked at the pickup hotel. It made the experience uncomfortable and less efficient.
Leonie is such an amazing guide! The roads that typically the tour takes, on one side of the island were unfortunately washed out due to so much rain the past few days, but Leonie still found a way to make the tour amazing for us and took another way to see some amazing scenery. She is an incredible person and taught us so much about the island and the great people here. I would not have been able to see even a quarter of what we did if not for Leonie. Thank you for this day! 😊🙏
Fantastic scenery ready at 8.45 we didn’t get going from the supermarket till 10.00. Scenery was stunning and very dramatic unlike anything we’ve experienced in French Polynesia. Would have liked water provided.
We had an absolutely fantastic time exploring the Papenoo Valley by jeep. If you are looking for an incredible experience, I cannot recommend this tour highly enough! Our guide was wonderful—so kind, helpful, and, most importantly, an incredibly skilled driver. The roads through the valley are very narrow and rugged, but she was a total professional. We felt completely safe and at ease with her behind the wheel the entire time. The trip lasted about 8 hours and included several great stops. One of the highlights was a refreshing break to swim in a beautiful natural pool, accompanied by a lovely snack. It’s clear that she has deep local knowledge, as she knew every hidden corner of the valley perfectly. I wouldn’t think of booking with anyone else. If you want a safe, authentic, and fun adventure, look no further!
While our guide on the tour through the heart of Tahiti was very knowledgeable and quite kind, I can’t recommend this trip to anyone else. Not because of the company but because the trip is 8 hours of being “bumpy” roads. It was more than bumpy, it was so jarring I felt like I was being beaten for 8 long hours. My husband was so car sick he could not enjoy any of it
Wonderful experience! Guide very knowledgeable.
This tour took us to the interior of the island and covered a lot of territory. Unfortunately it POURED almost the entire day so we weren't able to see much, BUT we all still had a great time, filled with laughter (while riding around) and enjoyed the information we learned at the stops. We also ended up with a flat tire near the end of our trip, but the guide, two people from our group, and a few men that were in a passing truck stopped by and had it changed in no time. I didn't realize it, but I was black and blue on my butt a few days later from the constant bumps (which my Fitbit counted at 19,000+ steps!)...but it was worth it for the day - just wish we had a little less heavy rain so we could have gotten out a bit more.
Wonderful experience! If you want a meaningful experience to truly see & experience the culture & see some beautiful places this is the tour for you! I also recommend buying the available lunch option it’s excellent. It’s very ruff and I wouldn’t call it a road maybe a goat trail in sections so hang on.
Brilliant tour. Passionate guides. Wonderful lunch. The scenery is unrivaled. It is not simply a four-wheel drive through the mountains but a great off-road experience. The best!!!!
By far the best tour! A full 8 hour day with an excellent driver/guide. She gave lots of information about everything we saw I was able to get us through all the roads when other companies were not trying. Very exciting, beautiful scenery, wonderful waterfalls. I highly recommend them.
About eight hours long, nine hours with pickups and drop offs. Very bumpy but very scenic. Good explanations.
We had an excellent experience on this 4x4 excursion. The guides were outstanding, and we learned about the flora, fauna, and history of the Polynesian people of Tahiti. The swim is perfect to cool down on a hot day! It is very bumpy, yet totally worth it if your body can handle it!
Smallgroup of 7 plus experienced Tahitian driver who knows how to drive on rough terrain, unpaved very steep roads. Spectacular views among the sharp volcanic peaks and waterfalls, a nice rest and snacks of local fruit at the camp at the top.
Of the four tours we took on this trip, this was the best. The tour guide shared insight on the history of the island and people. It was fun and educational. The eels he fed in the stream just topped it all off.
Great experience seeing the interior of Tahiti. Beautiful vistas. Strongly recommended if you do not mind navigating some bumpy roads in the mountains.
It is a long day in the back of a Ute but the sights are spectacular and the guide very knowledgeable. Despite the bumpy ride, it is definitely worth it. I wished we could stop more often - including pit stops as there is really only one , half way through the trip —but I understand that it is not very practical as it would make the day even longer.
The guide was AWESOME as was this tour!! It was rainy so we had the chance to see ALL of the waterfalls in full action. The guide taught us about the various species of flora and fauna and their origins, any animal species, we sampled some fruits, and had the chance to see a group of high school seniors trek to the campsite for their cultural immersion stay. We got a flat tire on the way out and some helpful guys from the hydro plant stopped to help our guide who hopped out and was changing the tire in his bare feet! He explained why some locals preferred to walk in their bare feet and it was just a great opportunity to learn more about Tahitians and their history. I would absolutely recommend this tour. Since I was solo I had the BEST seat in the house with the guide!! Book your tour today!!
Extremely rough roads. Not much narrating due to driver/ tour guide in cab of truck n you are in bed of truck
And excellent experience with wonderful guide. Very knowledgeable and was able to answer all our questions.
Long day..bumpy but we are in our 72 and 79 and enjoyed the day ,even with the rain showers. Guide fantastic
It is a one of a kind adventure on the island. We rode through the rain forest as the rivers were raging. We had to take some of the bridges instead of fording all the rivers. It was bumpy but our trucks benches were padded enough.
I really enjoyed and loved it! Got to see an awesome view and learn about the island and the culture.
This is a full day adventure. It's loads of fun and the scenery is fantastic. It's clear Leonie and her team are knowledgeable and passionate about Tahiti. Our guide stopped frequently to show us different plants (explaining their value to the people of the island) and breathtaking waterfalls. We had a nice stop for lunch (which we purchased at a store prior to leaving Papeete) and they supplied delicious fruit for dessert. They played lovely music for us at lunch and even got us up dancing. Note we didn't have any bathroom breaks until lunch (perhaps if someone needed one there would have been somewhere provided), so plan accordingly if you know what I mean. The trip, as others have noted, is along bumpy roads and many are along the side of the mountain but the scenery made it all worthwhile.
