outstanding tour huge fish market tour taking you into the Auction Room then into the seafood holding room where they specifically walked you through all the species in the sale that day-a lot. On to the tuna room and then the loster room-the only way to access this it ended with the trawler access at the back and then discussion about the trawlers and what they were targetting-differt trawerls different fish It is very early but worth ih!
A must do tour. Informative, funny at times and incredible insights into the fishing industry with a strong personal connection through our guides family history.
A friendly and informative guided tour. Dan was very Knowledgeable and passionate about the fish market. Informing us all of how it works from catching to selling.
Dan was an excellent guide !!! We booked this tour on a lark to fill in time during our stay and we are so glad we did . This place was amazing and the retail market upstairs was incredible!!
Great experience! Our tour guide, Dan, was amazing. Very informative and passionate about the fishing industry
Dan was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the market. It was an amazing experience to watch the auction. We also got to see the fish up close and speak with fishermen. Would highly recommend!
As someone who has visited the Sydney Fish Market many times, getting to see the behind-the-scenes operations of the new market was an incredibly exciting experience. This was easily one of the best tours I’ve ever been on. The entire experience was perfectly laid out—from grabbing coffee to walking the floor and seeing the live auction in action. We got an up-close look at the fish and all the different sections, learning so much about the entire supply process. Our guide, Dan, was absolutely brilliant. He was cheery, friendly, and incredibly welcoming. Not only did he know everything about how the new fish market operates and the history of the old one, but he also had deep personal experience with the seafood industry. We learned just as much about the fish itself as we did about the facility. There wasn't a single question he didn't know the answer to! My wife, my parents, and I had the absolute best time. If you want to truly understand how this amazing place works, I cannot recommend this tour—and Dan—highly enough.
Dan took us on a wonderful informative tour of behind the scenes at the fish market. He was extremely knowledgeable and passionately gave us a good understanding of everything from catching the fish, the boats, the auction floor and processes involved in getting them to market. He showed us a tank of 10kg Tasmanian crabs, crayfish and a variety of fish from small whiting to tuna and marlin.
I would tell anyone who travels to Sydney that this is a must-tour. We learned so many fascinating facts about the fishing industry, and our guides were super knowledgeable and friendly. It was so fun to learn about the fish auction, and to see some of it live. You also get to see so many different fish species up close. I know it’s a pain to get up so early in the morning, but trust us, it is worth it. And don’t worry, there is a coffee stop on the tour! The building itself is gorgeous, and after the tour, there are so many kiosks to choose from for brunch. (If you like sushi/sashimi or oysters, this is the place to be!)
Amazing insight into the fishing industry and different species of fish really good guide
One word WOW! Our tour with guide Dan was absolutely incredible. Right from the moment we booked to the time we left the whole journey felt like we were part of the family. The atmosphere of the workers salesman and fisherman was something truely special and you should all be grateful for. The wealth of knowledge from Dan about every species of fish was absolutely incredible. The way you get to see every stage of the marketing process from the fisherman on the boat till the moment it leaves in a truck it is something everyone needs to see. Hands down one of the best tours / experiences we have had in Sydney and will definitely recommend to anyone travelling here
We had an incredible behind-the-scenes tour of the Sydney Fish Market with Mike. His passion for seafood, the industry, and the market itself really shone through from start to finish. Mike’s knowledge was outstanding, and the way he carried himself throughout the tour made the experience both engaging and enjoyable. Everyone in the group certainly walked away having learned something new. A fantastic tour and highly recommended!
Roger, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable, personable and enthusiastic. Tbh I was in two minds about the tour, but I enjoyed it so much! He imparted his wealth of knowledge in the most tireless and cheerful fashion. It was so interesting and entertaining. Thanks Roger.
Very enjoyable two hours going behind the scenes at the Sydney Fish Market viewing the Dutch auction system in action, retail operations, logistics, fishing fleet etc. Very informative guide with details on fish species together with cooking tips. Early start at 6am but there are other times available during the day. Highly recommended.
Excellent behind the scenes tour. Our guide, Dan, was enthusiastic about the market and his knowledge of the fish impressive. We got to see the auction, the stores, the Wheelers moving the boxes of fish around, the fishing trawlers and we were lucky enough to see this huge tuna that came in that morning. This trip was worth every penny and would definitely recommend.
What a fantastic tour of the workings of the Sydney fish markets! So interesting to watch the auctions and then the entire process of how the fish end up in the local (or international) fish shops! We were lucky enough to see the excitement amongst all of the workers when a 188kg blue fin tuna was actioned and subsequently displayed for public viewing today.
Fantastic educational piece on market operations and controls, food handling , fish types and the sea to shop front process Our guide Dan was epic , a promoters dream, full of knowledge and insights to every part of the fishing industry and all our questions too.
An excellent tour. I learned a lot about how the market operates and also about the many species of fish sold. Highly recommend.
This tour was absolutely amazing. Our guide, Dan was very knowledgeable and passionate in his presentation. Would recommend this tour to anyone.
We took a tour of the Sydney Fish Market today at 9am. It was fantastic! Two architects explained the challenges of building on that site, and the nightmare of trying to please the needs of many different user groups. We also bought some seafood before the big crowds arrived at 10am, and had prawns for lunch! We recommend this interesting insight into a very popular Sydney attraction. What a great design!
Well worth the early wake up. Seeing all of the different parts of the fish market operations was enlightening. Watching the live auctions - how fast they move, how much is going on at once – blew my mind. Our tour guide, Dan, shared his expertise on so many different types of fish on the stock room floor. If you like seafood I would definitely recommend this tour.
Great tour! Our guide Dan was the right mix of entertaining and informative and we had incredible access to the behind the scenes operations. So fascinating to see the auction happening, and to be taken around the sale room floor and learn about different species, and fishing methods, and even how the deliveries in and out work. Highly recommend.
Booking experience: Booking online was super easy. I recommend booking well in advance though as there are only 12 people on the once daily tour. TBH, even 12 was too many and I often could not hear what the guide was saying as this is a working fish market with lots of sounds. Start time: The Fish Market send explicit instructions that we were to be there at 5:50 am so we could start the tour at 6 am. My husband and I and another couple were on time but we ended up waiting for quite a few stragglers and didn't get started til 6:15 am. I hoped that the tour guide would have started without them and perhaps had someone else bring the stragglers to the tour once they decided to show up. Admission Fee: A bit high but worth it Length of visit: 2 hours was plenty of time to hear about the industry and the different types of fish Atmosphere: This was an authentic fish market! We saw the dutch auction process in action. Our guide (Dan) walked us through all of the processes and described what had changed over the years. What I call "The Big Fish" area was jaw dropping in terms of the size of the fish. Crowd size: Should go from 12 down to 8 max. Staff: Dan was a wonderful guide! This tour is best for a different experience in Sydney. My husband and I absolutely loved it and considered it a highlight of our 37 day Pacific Circle adventure.
Sydney Fish Market behind the scenes was very informative. It was really interesting learning what happens behind the scenes. T was great and you know she loves her job! Thanks T for a great Tour!
Could not fault the experience at all! Dan was a fantastic guide, super informative, interesting and funny - happy to answer all our questions. Loved the small group too, wouldn't want any more. Very thankful for all the workers and tenants allowing us into their spaces. My only complaint, could've done without the coffee stop, as we'd prepared and had breakfast and coffee beforehand, as we felt the tour was not long enough and that time people stopping to order and wait for coffee could've been spent having more time on the tour!
We booked an afternoon tour at the last minute so missed a lot of the live action, but our guide Sophie was absolutely fantastic really informative and very passionate about what she does. The new fish market is fantastic even if you don't do a tour just the array of fish on show and restaurants to try is out of this world ,just watch out for the birds trying to get your dood if you sit outside
Hey Dan and Ms T, We attended your tour last Wednesday 26th March 2026. So, some feed back for you. It was just excellent and we were so impressed by your friendly and yet professional attitude, your knowledge and willingness to share information. Out of 10 we’ll give you 11! Well done and please keep up the good work. Kind regards Capt R and Ms Nin
It is an early start (6am) but worth the effort. Great to see what happens behind the scenes, learn about dutch auctions, see beautiful fresh seafood and talk about sustainable fishing and aquaculture. Our guides were Dan & T. Really enjoyed the morning and would recommend to locals and tourists alike.
I really loved this tour of the brand new Sydney Fish Market. It’s a fascinating way to see the inner workings of this seafood hub. Learning about the auctions and the local seafood and see the local fishing fleet up close was a real treat. Mike was incredibly knowledgeable. Thanks
A great tour and a great insight into all things seafood. Dan, our host, was extremely knowledgable and provided great insight along the way. A must do experience when in Sydney.
Seeing the inside operations of the new Sydney fish market was a great experience, worth the early rise. Dan, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable and very pleasant, taking the time to answer all of our questions. Small group tour, so you get to see it all, from auction to filet! If you are even curious ti see how your seafood made it to your table, I highly recommend this tour.
Great experience behind the scenes at the market. To undetstand all the process before it hits our tables. Our guide knowledge was great.
Very enjoyable tour that was most informative. Dan was an outstanding guide with superlative knowledge of both market operations and fish facts. The tour took about 2 hours and the best part was getting to go onto the trading floor which is usually closed to the public. We went on a Tuesday and there wasn't a lot of stock so my advice would be to go on a Monday or a Friday which are the busiest days. We felt the tour was good value at just over $80 per person, but the $45 parking for the two hours was rude. Perhaps the markets could consider discounted parking for anyone doing a tour. Despite that, it was well worth doing.
Dan led the tour. My wife and I had done the Sunset tour before so I did this one with friends. It was excellent and we saw quite a bit more on this tour including the end of the daily auction.
An amazing tour thanks to the knowledge and friendly manner of our guide, Tiana. So interesting to hear about the environmental and technological practices that were put into place for the building of the new fish market. Because of Tiana's professional knowledge she also gave us fascinating insights into marine life.
It was a fantastic experience, and Mike, our tour guide of the fish market, explained everything! Thank you to all who support us in exploring the fish Market. If anyone wishes to explore the fish market, it is better to do so before sunrise.
Our experience was better than we thought it could be. It was a very informative tour led by Dan. There was so much to see behind the scenes … we loved it
Very informative, comprehensive and impressive tour , perfectly led by knowledgeable Dan! Well worth it ! The Dutch auction is the best part!
Dan was a fantastic guide. It was great to experience behind the scenes and learn what it’s like from the wholesalers and fish monger perspective
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ **Highly Recommended Behind-the-Scenes Tour at Sydney Fish Market** The tour departed right on time at 6:00am, and from the start everything was well organised. We were escorted to leave any bags and water bottles behind and were provided with rubber bootsbefore entering the working areas. A tip for anyone doing this tour: definitely wear a warm jacket, as you go into large cold rooms. Our guide, Mike, was excellent and explained everything clearly. Our first stop was the bidding room, where Mike gave a detailed and easy-to-understand explanation of how the Dutch bidding system works. It was fascinating to see this process in action and learn how seafood is sold so quickly and efficiently. We then moved onto the trading floor, where a wide variety of fish were laid out ready for sale to wholesalers. From there, we visited the **live crab room**, which is temperature- and humidity-controlled, and learned how **tuna quality is checked**, along with seeing some impressively large king prawns up close. The tour also took us down to the docks, where seafood is transported in, and along the wharves where fishermen bring in their catches. We walked through the wholesale area as well — photos and videos aren’t allowed in this section, but you’re not really missing out visually, as the value is more in the explanation than what you see. In the other areas, photos and videos are allowed. Overall, it was incredibly interesting to see what goes on behind the scenes and gain a real appreciation for the scale, organisation, and work involved in getting seafood from the ocean to the market. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Sydney or locals looking for something different.
The Behind the Scenes Tour at the Sydney Fish Market was one of the top experiences we’ve ever had. Our guide, Mike, was expert on each operation within the market from the auction room, to the wholesale floor, to the commercial wharf , to boats themselves. And he knew everything about most of the fish we saw and had something fascinating to say about it all. We had to wear heavy rubber boots and safety vests to do the tour but that made it even more fun. Despite the VERY early hour and the price, this tour is a cannot miss.
There are already plenty of great reasons to go to the Sydney Fish Market and it's even better to get behind the scenes of this world class facility. It's super interesting to learn how it all works - the opportunity to be on the floor through the daily auction is very cool - the whole thing an experience I'll be telling my friends about for ages. Highly recommended!
Mike gave a very descriptive and informative background on the inner workings of the Sydney Fish Market. I walked away with a greater understanding of the Dutch Auction and the various sellers and suppliers! Its obvious that the is very passionate about the place and his knowledge about the Tuna commercial fishing industry is second to none. I would highly recommend this tour and ask for him to be your guide.
It was a fantastic experience. The first behind the scenes tour of the new fish mark. Our guide Michael was warm, ridiculously knowledgeable and filled our tour with interesting facts and education. Who knew a fish market could be so exciting. The two hours flew by. We watched the Dutch auction, visited the ‘fish’ floor which was a hive of activity. Tech and logistics is incredible. We even met and chatted to a sustainable fisherman and his boat. Can’t recommend Mike and this tour highly enough. The new fish market is beautiful too!
Fabulous experience with a VERY knowledgeable( ex commercial fisherman)guide,Great to see the buyers having a bit of fun with each other . Will certainly be looking into the cooking courses. Thanks for the great advice 🙏
Such a fun tour with Mike this morning. He was so knowledgeable, took time to answer our questions thoughtfully and even took us down to the auction floor to show us the space. He highlightef specialties of each vendor and and how to be a savvy shopper in the market. Would recommend this your to friends!
This tour was truly fascinating. Although I’ve lived in Sydney for the past nine years, this was my first time experiencing it. I brought my father-in-law along, and he thoroughly enjoyed it, it was an incredibly informative activity. It was so interesting to see the inner workings of the fish market. Mark was extremely knowledgeable; he explained how the auction process works, how to choose good quality fish, and guided us through the market as we learned about the different varieties of fresh seafood. I highly recommend this tour!
I really enjoyed coming here and learning about how the fish market works. It's such an important part of Sydney! Honestly the best place for the freshest seafood as well. Mike did a great job of explaining everything and his enthusiasm showed throughout the tour. I love there are many places where you can choose a whole fish and have them clean it up for you, filet it and even cook it the way you prefer. There is also lots of cooked seafood to enjoy. Plenty of outdoor seating, some inside specific to the business as well. Will be back!
Having been to Sydney on numerous occasions, were looking for a different type of experience, and this tour certainly exceeded our expectations. Our tour guide Mike is incredibly knowledgeable, having worked in the fishing industry from the Bearing Sea, to Hawaii, to far north Queensland and locally at these markets for many years. From watching live seafood auctions, to walking around the auction floor, trying to avoid getting in the way of the very busy workers, and then through the retail side, we experienced everything in this amazing tour. Definitely recommend this informative and fun tour, well worth the early morning start!
