Itinerary
Enjoy a 90-minute Dolphin Discovery Cruise with Moonshadow Cruises on the turquoise blue waters of Port Stephens, a veritable marine wonderland. This extraordinary natural harbour is home to some 140 bottle nose dolphins who will entrance you by their playful and intelligent nature as they frolic around the boat or surf the bow waves. Be mindful to also look out for other wildlife including pelicans, sea eagles, the occasional seal and of course humpback whales during the winter months. In the warmer months you might want to bring a swimming costume to take a plunge in the boom net at the rear of the boat - just make sure you have a change of clothes. Enjoy the lunch on cruise with beautiful surroundings. Vegetarian option available.
Lunch will be at your own expense in Nelson Bay, allowing you the flexibility to choose from a variety of local dining options.
Visit the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary which supports the long-term rehabilitation, preservation and conservation of koala in the wild. This $ 10 million project is jointly funded by the NSW State Government and the Port Stephens council to provide care for sick, injured or orphaned Koalas with the aim of releasing them back into the wild. After lunch accompany your guide on the Sanctuary Story Walk, a flat 250m pathway, with large Koala sculptures that educate about Koala and its natural habitat. Marvel at the $ 5 million Koala Hospital which directly contributes to the long-term survivability of the wild Koala population in the Port Stephens region. The final attraction is the Sanctuary SKYwalk a 225mtr elevated pathway with viewing platforms in the tree top canopy where you have the rare opportunity of seeing one of Australia's most iconic marsupials in the wild.
Our final stop is at the world-renowned Stockton sand dunes, a coastal desert 32km long and the largest mobile sand dune system in the southern hemisphere. Meet your friendly drivers from Port Stephens 4WD Tours, and board a 19-seater 4WD red bus for the 2km drive to “The Dunes”. Now it’s time for Adventure as you sand board down the huge sand dunes that make up this idyllic setting. Your sandboarding guide will give you safety instructions and tips on techniques on how to sandboard successfully. Sandboarding is suitable for toddlers to grandparents and very safe. Sandboarding is referred to as ‘soft adventure’ however it is hard core family fun.
Arrive back at Sydney. Drop off at Central Train Station or Furama Darling Harbour

Brilliant tour for families—our two young children loved it. Huge thanks to our amazing guides, Yan and Danny. Yan’s commentary in English and Mandarin was so detailed and informative, and Danny was wonderfully friendly, helping everyone capture perfect family photos throughout the day.
All depends on the weather, saw a couple of dolphins but it wasn't great. The Koala hospital was very small and a bit disappointing, we were rushed through quickly. The best part of the day was the sandboarding this was great fun.
We had a fantastic experience with Alfie as our tour guide! He was friendly, knowledgeable, and professional throughout the tour. He explained everything clearly, shared interesting information, and made the whole experience enjoyable and memorable.
Great experience and nicely spent day. Especially the 4WD and sandboarding were tons of fun. Our tour guides Yan and Frank were very helpful and friendly as well.
We had Yan and Frank as tour guides and they were excellent. Very friendly and helpful, Yan even got some excellent footage of me and my girlfriend during the sand boarding activity. The trip was great, me and my girlfriend had an excellent time. I’d highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a fun day trip.
Nice and kind guides Yan, Frank
I was disappointed by this tour. The tour guide Zhao was great - absolutely no issues there! But the activities ended up being kind of boring. I understand no one can guarantee dolphin sightings, but when you don't see them (we only saw a few partial fins but of course the captain raved how amazing that was) you're just going around a bay for 90 minutes which you could do in Sydney for way less cost and hassle. The koalas were cool, but that was pretty short and again, you can see them other places much closer to Sydney. And the sand boarding was a huge let down. They place the tour uses doesn't let you stand up. The board they give you is about 10 inches wide and not very long so you're crammed on it (and I'm a small person) trying not to tip over. The hill isn't very long at all and the board is textured on the bottom so you barely get going really slowly and then you're at the bottom. I was shocked at how bad it was. The whole group was bored after a few tries and left early. The sand dunes were pretty, but I'd go separately with a company that has better boards and lets you stand up or something. Definitely not something I'd do again.
Booked this tour to see the koalas (I don’t do zoos, but could justify seeing them at a sanctuary), and I felt very rushed. Only had 40-45 mins total, including walking to and from the bus. Also, there was very little information given at the sanctuary as it was self-guided. Snacks were only Oreos, which was very limiting compared to the wild kangaroo tour I did a few days prior (which provided a generous array of Australian snacks and drinks). The bus wasn’t very comfortable. It was stuffy and didn’t have curtains to block the sun. There man who sat in front me of kept coughing without covering his mouth. It would have been nice to set some ground rules.
This trip was sensational! Literally 3 tours in 1, excellent value. My 6 year loved the sand boarding (it’s like sledding but on sand) We even saw wild Kangaroos on the bus ride back and the driver pulled over to let us take pics.
It was an excellent experience for my family with the friendly and helpful tour guide Gordon and Sota. I have no doubt to recommend them. We saw dolphin and they swam with the boat with us!
Nice tour guide Sota and Gordon. They are really helpful and nice sharing experience. We are well care and i can see many dolphins swimming with us finally. The sanding is super funny. Stongly recommended if you travel to Sydney. Suitable for small kids just 6 years old.
Gordon and Shota are amazing guides. Highly recommended!
We packed a lot into one day on this adventure! The dolphin cruise was gorgeous, and we loved our visit to the koala sanctuary. The highlight was sandboarding where the desert meets the ocean. Once in a lifetime experience.
Good Journey with fun activities
Gordon was great. Very knowledgeable on all the places he was bring us to.
Tour guide was amazing! The rest not so great. It’s a LOT of driving and not much actually doing anything. Wasn’t worth it for the 12 hour tour. Dolphin cruise saw no dolphins. Then you’re rushed for lunch. Rushed at the Koala sanctuary (which is tiny but cute) and then rushed at the sand dunes. Bus was uncomfortable for the 6 hours round trip.
This tour is great! Yan and Shiroi did excellent to manage this tour very polite and kind people they make sure everyone is safe and always on board and not left anyone behind. Yan is excellent driver and make sure our trip is smooth. Thank you for this excellent tour and I would recommend this to family and friends. Till our next tour trip again here.
Our guide/driver Chen was awesome! Loved the side quest to see the whales from the scenic lookout. Did a great job making my daughter's birthday extra special and providing good behind-the-scenes commentary.
I had the most amazing day! Sandboarding was a blast, and seeing wild dolphins and koalas in one day felt like a dream. A fantastic experience from start to finish.
Super fun tour! We got to see dolphins on the cruise, koalas at the hospital, and we especially loved the sandboarding. Tour was well timed and our tour guide Gordon was lovely
Driver Bruno and Guide Rona were amazing💗💗💗 We had fun in Port Stephens, smooth journey and they've provided all info we need to know. Highlight was the Sand Dunes, spectacular view. Thank you both!☺️
Bruno and Rona did great! They were attentive to our needs and ensure everyone’s safety. Such a fun trip.
“Bruno and Rona were great!!!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Thank you, Chen, for an amazing Port Stephens tour! The dolphin cruise, Koala Sanctuary visit, and sand boarding were all great fun and well organized. Chen was friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable, making the entire experience enjoyable and stress-free. Highly recommended!
This trip was very fun but Chen made it better ☺️😆 I wish the length of visit could be longer though, and that more activities are included in the day tour, However even with 3 activities only i enjoyed myself to the fullest! Chen even provided oreos and water for us which is very kind ☺️
Alfie is a great tour guide! So insightful. Would 100000% recommend!
Alfie is a great tour guide, absolutely loved the way he showed us around😊
Tourguide Alfie is great and nice
Wonderful trip with great Tour guide ! Max, our Tour Guide, was absolutely nice and professional. Thanks Max and Queen Tour
Very enjoyable tour! The sandboarding was awesome! Our tour guide Zhao is very friendly and helpful. Excellent experience all in all!
The coach that picked us up was very nice. Gordon our driver was very knowledgeable as we made the transit to start the day at dolphin watching. The boat was very well run and new exactly where to go to see the dolphins. Port Stephens was beautiful and it was nice to jsut watcch the coast as we transited the water. There were many others who enjoyed the slide and water net off the back of the boat. The Koala Sanctuary was very nice and well run. The 11 koalas that were there were nice to see and it was easy to support the sanctuary. The sand boarding was a blast. We were there about 50 minutes and that allowed you to go down the hill about six to seven times depending on how quickly you were able to go up the hill to start each time. The views fromthe beach were gorgeous.
Wonderful tour! Great guide and fantastic activities. Highly recommend. Chen was excellent.
Such an amazing tour! Chen was a great guide and gave us all the best tips for making the most of the tour! Got to see a pod of bottle nose dolphins and super cute koalas (and financially support the koala sanctuary) and of course went sandboarding! Overall an amazing tour and would highly recommend the anyone visiting Sydney! It’s a must do 🤙
Gordon is professional and provided us a rich cultural knowledge of instruction. excellent experience
Gordon is good and nice. He is able to speak fluent English and Mandarin.
Good drive good places guided by Gordon
It is a great experience. The driver is very friendly and humourous. All of us really enjoyed all 3 of the amusements. We will recommend Brighton Tours to others.
導遊Chen很有耐心,講解很詳細,行程很好,滑沙很刺激!
Fantastic! Amazing! Funny! Awesome!
Chen was an amazing and friendly guide. We managed to get from one place to another on time and completed all the planned activities.
Chen was awesome and very knowledgeable about the sand dunes
Chen and Yoko looked after us very well
1. Received guide's contact info by email a day before. I sent a Whatsapp message to guide to confirm the assembly time , but guide didn't reply. 2. Booked an English tour, but found it was mixed English & Mandarin after boarding. 3. Driver drove poorly, braked suddenly on straight roads, causing extreme discomfort; someone vomited. 4. Driver often used microphone, disturbing rest. 5. Boat ride had beautiful scenery, fish & chips tasty, but few dolphins appeared. 6. Koala stop was boring: saw only 2-3 sleeping from afar, walked 10 min then back on bus. 7. At sandboarding, others rode vehicles into dunes, but we walked. I slid 5-6 times in 20 mins before staff called us to leave. 8. Overall, rushed sightseeing with 6-7 hours driving round trip. Completely not worth it.
It was fun we had a lots of fun things to do
The trip is packed full of activities, luckily we saw some dolphins on the cruise. Saw some koalas in Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary, they are so cute! Our driver Yan is so friendly and nice, the told us lots of facts about Sydney and Koalas. Thanks Yan!
The tour in general was well designed. Our tour guide Joe even explained everything in both English and Mandarin Chinese to accommodate with those who aren’t fluent in English. It’s just that the duration of each individual activity is not long enough. The dolphin tour was alright but we only spent around 40 minutes in the koala sanctuary in which we only managed to spot a few koalas.
: brighton tours is a reliable, widely used agency for diverse travel needs, and alfi is a great tour guide.
Brilliant tour. Sandboarding was especially fun! Tour guide was lovely and made things 100x more fun!
The tour was great! There is a variety of activities related to nature and you can really get to know more about the nature through this trip. The tour guide Yan was professional and has well-led the tour. The most impressive part of the tour must be meeting koalas in the koala sanctuary. This is ENTIRELY different of ordinary zoo or koala schedules as the sanctuary is built and serve only for injured koalas with koala hospital also built inside. The sanctuary is truly meaningful in rescuing and habituating koalas in need. It feels so good to have known about stories behind each koala. I will definitely recommend this tour to everyone who loves wild creatures!
