Captain Stan was amazing. His knowledge of Pirates, piracy and basically all things nautical was incredible. The sail was smooth and we watched the sunset go down over the mountain. Awesome trip!

I wanted a sailing trip and some pirate stories and wow- Stanford literally wrote a book on this, searching through archives in Spain and England reading the primary sources to put the pieces of history together grounding all the pirate legends in the real events they evolved from. Very casual sail around Salt River Bay and out into the sea just enough for you to understand why the bay was such an important refuge for its many inhabitants throughout the ages (it's a big of a rougher sail but he doesn't stay there longer than you want if you don't. have sea legs).
Never ever written a poor review but..always a first paid for a private boat and he had us waiting wanting to add another two and we were already squished. He blamed Viator. After the third attacking comments about our President Trump I said enough. Boat goes around a very small marina around around the same boats My Friend asked does your dog like to give kisses he says Kisses for me not u (rudely said too). Go at your own risk
Stan Joines is incredibly knowledgeable and we enjoyed his storytelling and the actual sail. We live in St. Croix and took my parents who were visiting. If you like history, beautiful views, and calm water, Stan is your man! I highly recommend this tour.
We learned so much history and spent an easy two hours on the gorgeous bay and mangrove. Even dipped into the ocean. Saw many turtles pop their heads up. Great way to learn some about many hundred of years of history of St. Croix and the Caribbean while getting time on the water. Stanford is a descendant of the “pirates” he shares story about. Highly recommend this excursion!
Wasn’t sure what to expect but this sailing tour proved to be one of the highlights of our vacation. The Captain’s knowledge of local pirate history is unmatched. We are still repeating some of his fantastic stories with friends here at home. Ask to see the bag of cannonballs! This is a tour suitable for nearly all age groups, not just for kids. So happy we did this!
Stan is a wonderful story teller! Riveted by the history and breathtaking scenery, it just flew by. I cannot recommend enough.
This was the highlight of my St Croix USVI vacation! Captain Stan and Oscar (his incredibly cute dog) did a great job telling me the pirate history of the area and his families ties to the history! Capt Stan made sure to have cold water/soda if I wanted any. And don't forget Capt Stan wrote a book about this! I definitely recommend buying the book, there are signed copies at the marina. Overall a great way to spend a couple hours!
Learning about the history of the area and being on the water was great. The Captain is a skilled sailor with amazing knowledge of St. Croix's history.
Stanford got the time mixed up so off to a questionable start. He told us a lot of the pirate history of the island and an enjoyable sail. His dog Oscar is very cute and a good sailor also. You don’t see any shipwrecks as the remains are under water. We never received a free drink.
My husband and I had a fantastic time! Captain Stan was very knowledgeable about the history of St. Croix. We learned so much about the local indigenous people, the buccaneers and the pirates who lived/visited the island all while having a beautiful sail throughout the salt river bay.
Captain Stan and his first mate Oscar the dog, delivered a most enjoyable afternoon on Salt River Bay. Stan is a knowledgeable historian, engaging storyteller, not to mention a ninja sailor, check out his final approach. Highly recommend this to anyone seeking a casual, comfortable sail with witty friendly company.
The day of our trip was windy and there were small craft advisories. We were hesitant, but Captain Stan put us at ease and gave us an incredible sailing adventure. At no point did we feel unsafe, and knew we were in very capable hands. Captain Stan spun the incredible history of the bay we were sailing, and of St. Croix, while he and his first mate Oscar (his cute little dog) expertly handled his craft. It was a highlight of our trip and can highly recommend it.
Informative and relaxing -- nice to be able to go out as a private group without a big crowd of other folks. Stan is a knowledgeable sailor, teacher, historian, and musician. He is a pleasant and talented storyteller and presents history in the context of the island's geography -- so many of the stories of the island of St Croix lie below the surface of the water. The duration is long enough to be fun and get to see some stuff and short enough to not take up the whole day -- good small family option. To quote another reviewer, this excursion brings fantastic pirate stories, a cute dog, and fun sailing.
Three generations of our family, ages five to 71, set sail with Stan. Everyone had a great time and learned a lot. Indeed we were so impressed we bought his book. Now if we can just pry it out of the elder grandson's hands. Finally, for the sailors among us, Stan's skills are impressive, especially his return to the dock. Take notes.
Great and informative trip! I would highly recommend it. We learned a ton and the sail was a lot of fun.
Such a beautiful and relaxing sailboat trip. The history behind the pirates and buccaneers was amazing. He didn’t skip a beat. Highly recommend!
Fantastic pirate stories, cute dog, and fun sailing. My three daughters all had fun, we saw turtles and sailed around the bay, and out past the reef. It’s amazing to hear about ship wrecks right there beneath you! We bought his book right after and my daughters even wanted to read it.
The highlight of our trip to Saint Croix. A beautiful day sailing around Salt River Bay and out into the ocean over the reef with Captain Stan and his sweet lil dog Oscar. His storytelling of the pirates, shipwrecks and Caribbean and his historical knowledge was amazing. So much that I will definitely be purchasing his book “The Eighth Flag” to learn more about that time period. We highly recommend this adventure when you go to Saint Croix. Thanks again Stan.
Imagine you found someone amazingly knowledgeable about world history and Caribbean pirate history…I mean like literally “wrote the book” on Caribbean pirate history. Imagine this person is also an entertaining and riveting story teller. And, last, what if this guy actually owned a sail boat and would take you around a bay filled with pirate history while telling you exciting, and often humorous, stories? Sound too good to be true? Well this person exists and his name is Captain Stan! Our teens, my wife and I were lucky enough to sail with Captain Stan on one of our last vacation days in St Croix and it will be one of the highlights we’ll talk about for years. I’m not sure I’ve ever said “Wow!” so many times in two hours. Go just because it’s a beautiful sailing experience and then let the stories and history be the pleasant surprise. If you’re not careful you’ll learn something during all this fun! And I’m pretty sure you’ll never view pirates the same!
Stan brought pirate history to life for our family during a beautiful sail through Salt River. We had a fantastic time learning about STX’s “Eighth Flag.” An accommodating and knowledgeable guide, Stan welcomed our group on to his boat and asked a few questions to customize our tour. He was wonderful teaching the kids about sailing—none of us had before. If you came here to do more than sit on the beach all day, we highly recommend calling Stan and booking a tour.
I can't think of a better way to end the day than a sunset sailing cruise. Stan brought the pirates of the buccaneering era to life with tales of the past, as we sailed on the same waters that the pirates and merchant ships did several hundred years ago. Stan made our adventure complete with the details of where battles at sea were fought, and pirates marauded vessels laden with gold. There might still be hidden treasures - waiting to be discovered. This sailing adventure was the highlight of our family trip!
Sailing with Stan is like immersing yourself in a History lesson of pirates and buccaneers. You will not only enjoy the beautiful blue and clear Caribbean waters of Salt River, you will also learn about the history of St. Croix. Stan is an expert sailor who has taught sailing to junior high and high school students. He knows how to cater to families with young children and of course to adults. A real pleasure to sail with him.
I highly recommend this tour and the tour guide. Stan is clearly an authority on the history of the island and how it relates to the rest of the Caribbean, the US, and Europe. It was a great adventure! He cares deeply about meeting the expectations of his clients. It was wonderful to have some adult and child beverages on board. The views were spectacular! Stanford is a skilled sailor and shared so many anecdotes about music, island life, and gave us great recommendations for food and activities on the island. He is respectful and adhered to the prevailing COVID protocols. Our family had a blast!
A friend, knowing I was going to St. Croix, sent me a book called, The Eighth Flag. I found this tour and to my delight, the Captain was the author! Captain Stan’s enthusiasm for history is contagious. He is a great story teller and historian.
