Itinerary
We will meet in the midst of Strossmayer Park, locally known as 'Đardin', next to the central fountain. Our story of Split will begin with the tale of water, which brings life to the Palace for over 17 centuries.
Our first sight will not be a glamorous one, but it will help us better understand what makes the city of Split truly unique worldwide. Prepare to travel 1,700 years into the past.
Before entering the Palace at the Golden or Northern Gate, we will stop by the 7-meter tall, bronze statue of Gregory of Nin, work of a famous Croatian sculptor, Ivan Mestrovic. Besides grabbing its toe for good luck, we will learn some intriguing details about this monument that became ingrained in local popular culture.
The northern entrance to the Emperor Diocletian's Palace was one of four entry points to the ancient Roman palace. After learning some of the most intriguing details about its history, we will proceed with our tour along Cardo, the main Roman street stretching from North to South, towards Peristyle.
After entering the Palace through the Golden Gate, we will traverse the ancient Cardo Maximus, the main Roman street that spanned from North to South. This historic pathway leads us directly to our next destination: hidden garden inside the Diocletian's Palace.
After wandering through the north-western corner of Diocletian’s Palace, we will arrive at the Iron Gate. There, you will hear the story of why the Iron Gate was the city's 'platinum' gate throughout its history.
As we stroll along the Decumanus, the grandeur of the Diocletian's Palace reveals itself as we approach the monumental Peristyle. We will learn the story of its origin and history, unraveling many of the stories it holds.
The secret behind this short but significant detour from the Peristyle toward the east will be unveiled on site.
While on the Peristyle, we'll delve into the history of what was originally a mausoleum for the Roman Emperor, which has since been repurposed as a Christian cathedral. Your guide will ensure you receive all the essential information, complemented by intriguing historical details to spark your imagination. We will not be entering the Cathedral since it is a paid site and this tour does not include entering any paid sites or museums.
This must-see attraction was once listed as 'one of the most beautiful European monuments' by the Scottish architect Robert Adam in the 18th century. Its beauty and charm remain just as captivating today.
Measuring less than 10 meters in length and only 57 centimeters wide, this street is recognized as one of the narrowest in the world. However, its significance extends beyond its size. Holding a special place in the memories of Split citizens it is also honored with a public monument on the other location in the city.
Once serving as the entry point to the Emperor's Quarters, Vestibule has become one of the most popular open-air photo spots. We will pause here to admire the scenery, capture a photo or two, and perhaps even savor the traditional 'klapa' singing, often performed in this acoustically rich environment.
Similar to locals, we'll take this 'shortcut,' which holds rich archaeological and historical significance, to reach the Riva waterfront. As we journey, we'll notice a shift in atmosphere from the vibrant Peristyle to the quieter and darker substructures before emerging onto the bustling Riva waterfront. While we won't explore the substructures in their entirety due to additional admission fees and time constraints, we can arrange a separate guided visit if you're interested in delving deeper into this remarkable structure.
As an important meeting place in Split, Riva functions as both a street, a promenade, and a square. We'll take a leisurely stroll along a portion of it to reach our next destination, the Fruit Square.
At the seaside exit of the Diocletian’s Palace Substructures, we will pause at a large model of Split’s Old Town to review city's layout and topography. This stop refreshes what we’ve seen on the tour. This is also likely our final stop, as exploring the Palace is extensive. If time allows, we may continue. If not, your guide will share tips for further exploration, including her favorite spots in the city.

We had a wonderful tour with Josepa! She was incredibly knowledgeable and had a way of connecting all the pieces of history together that made everything so interesting and easy to understand. She answered every question we had with such depth and enthusiasm, and we learned so much from her. You can tell she’s truly passionate about what she does, which made the experience even more enjoyable. I would highly recommend a tour with Josepa to anyone!
Josipa was excellent. I would highly recommend any tour she does. She is very knowledgeable, friendly and her English is perfect. She has also been very helpful for advice after our tour about where to go, things to do in Split, as well as just simple travel tips while here.
An amazing history of the Diocletian Palace and old town Split. Our tour guide Josipa had incredible knowledge of the history of the city
Great experience! Josipa was an amazing guide, knowledgeable, nice and made some personalized recommendations for the remaining of our trip. We highly recommend!
Josipa was an excellent tour guide! We learned a lot about the local history and had a lovely walk around the old town with her
Josipa was amazing! We told her up front that we had just arrived in Split and had only done the most basic research, but that we love history, art & architecture. That’s all she needed to know - in 2 hours she gave us such a comprehensive overview of the city & it’s many many layers. Actually she SHOWED us those layers - inside a nail shop or cafe, hidden in plain sight. This was exacty the kind of fun intro we needed in order to better appreciate the few days we would have in that fascinating city. Of course when there’s thousands of years of history you have to just skim the surface but somehow she got it done and we are grateful. By chance we were the only 2 on our morning tour so it was easy to be very interactive and to dive deeper into things that most interested us. And it's not just ancient history - there are surprising turn of the (nineteenth) century and early twentieth century buildings that we would have seen but not understood. She put everything into perspective. Perfect!
Excellent tour, knowledgeable and enjoyable guide
Look no further. This tour is great, the guide is very knowledgeable, relaxed and funny.
We booked this last minute and were so glad we did! The guide was extremely knowledgeable and gave us great restaurant recommendations too!
Josipa is the best! Our private tour was completely tailored to our interests for a family with 2 college-age kids. And Josipa was able to accommodate a last-minute change because of a flight delay. This was the best introduction to Old Town and the surrounding neighborhoods. Josipa's restaurant recommendations were spot-on too. Do this first when you visit Split!
This was not my first history tour around Diocletian’s palace, but it was definitely the best one. Josipa is a fantastic communicator and a great teacher. Her story telling is first class, but her aim was not to just dazzle and entertain for two hours. By telling stories about how the palace was used in the past, she made sure we understood the structure of it and could navigate it independently after she left us. Josipa helped us imagine the parts of the palace which were long gone and showed us parts of it which were hidden under the more modern structures. She clearly loves history, loves Split and likes being with people. She responded to our questions with knowledge and interest. We learnt not only about the remarkable Diocletian's palace, but also other parts of Split and other historical eras. We had the most stimulating 2 hours. I would do it all over again. I cannot recommend Josipa enough!
Josipa was an excellent tour guide. We wanted to learn about Split and we learned a lot of archeological as well as historic facts about the historic center. We walked throughout the palace walls and she pointed out details we never would have noticed. She also showed us some spots where locals eat and drink and told us a bit about daily life for the people who live within the walls today. This was the best tour we took in Croatia and we were super happy that we booked it.
Josipa was an amazing guide!! She was super knowledgeable and friendly. We had a fabulous time and learned so much about Split. I wish we had done this excursion at the beginning of our trip.
Josipa Is one of the best tour guys we've ever had. we've taken many tours in many different cities and she is by far one of the best we've ever had. she was extremely accommodating to our group which included four children under the age of 12 and was conscious of the temperature and made sure to be informative yet efficient. she's extremely knowledgeable about the area and we would highly highly recommend her to anybody wanting a wonderful tour. her background is rich in heart and history and her presentation style makes it easy to understand and exciting to learn about all the different cultural and historical background of the area. Our stay in split would not have been the same without her.
Definitely one of the best tours I've been on, and I'm from Croatia. Figured I already knew Split well enough, turns out not. What I liked most is that Josipa gives you a real historical overview, of Split but also the wider area, and somehow keeps it connected to what the city is now instead of just reciting dates at each stop. Her art history knowledge is seriously impressive, and she explains it in a way that doesn't go over your head. Pace was perfect too. Enough time everywhere, never rushed, and it doesn't drag on past the point where you're still interested. Would recommend to anyone, even if you think you already know the city.
Josipa is the reason to do a walking tour in Split. As a solo female traveler, finding a guide you instantly trust makes all the difference — and Josipa is exactly that. Her art history walking tour weaves together centuries of history, local traditions, and genuine insider knowledge in a way that makes Split feel like home. She knows the hidden gems, tracks the latest archaeological discoveries, and even pointed out the lead architect behind the current excavation exhibition. That's not tour guide territory — that's someone deeply embedded in this city's cultural life. She also knows exactly where to eat and drink afterward. Warm, knowledgeable, and passionate about her city — Josipa doesn't just show you Split. She helps you fall in love with it.
We had an amazing time with Josipa from Aspalathos Guided Tours. The meeting location was super easy to find, and at a safe location. They were even beautiful vendors nearby where we purchased the best crepes before starting the tour. Josipa was very warm and welcoming, all the guests showed up on time, and the tour started right as scheduled. We really toured all the locations as advertised and Josipa even took time to answer the groups questions and also recommended the best restaurants and fun places nearby. I would recommend this tour to everyone visiting Split.
Josipa has a wealth of knowledge about the history of Split and the various periods of archaeological investigations in the Old City and Diocletian’s Palace. I learned so much and thoroughly enjoyed walking the city. My tour was early in the day, and I recommend that to get in before the crowds and before it gets too hot.
Our family had a wonderful tour with Josipa of the beautiful city of Split and the Diocletian Palace. Josipa weaved her deep knowledge of history and architecture in recounting the story of this ancient place. She had great command of the pace and rhythm of the tour. At the end of the tour, she also gave great tips on restaurant choices, etc. Don’t hesitate, book this tour now!
Our guide, Josipa, was amazing! She asked great questions of us before we headed into Diocletian’s Palace and put a lot of context behind the architecture, history, and layout of this amazing Roman Palace. Josipa was filled with knowledge and insights, pointing out specifics and details that you may overlook just walking around on your own. She was very informative, pleasant and had a nice sense of humor to keep the tour positive and educational.
Josipa was excellent in explaining the geographical and historical facts of split. She was engaging and personable whilst with us. I would definitely recommend the tour.
Absolutely brilliant. So knowledgeable. Really engaging. A walking tour on a whole different level. Excellent English. Dry engaging & personable, Throroughly recommend.
Our family of four had a fantastic time!! Josipa was very kind and patient with our eleven and eight year old children. She had such interesting stories, they ended up loving the tour just as much as my husband and I did! She has a love for history and a love for Croatia and it shows. All of the little details she was able to showcase made us appreciate Split SO much more than we could have on our own. There are many hidden jewels and having such a small tour allowed us to ask questions and go at our own pace. We are American and she made us feel incredibly welcome. Thank you, Josipa!
Josipa provided us with an encyclopedic history tour and tips on places to eat and visit while in Split.
Our guide Josipa made our time in Split special. She was so knowledgeable and friendly and exceeded all our expectations. She whisked us away from crowds while keeping us engaged in the history, culture and magical feeling of Split. She graciously gave us great advise and helpful tips for the rest of our stay. We hope to have the opportunity to return again someday and lucky enough to book another tour with Josipa.
Our guide was very friendly. She clearly loves the city herself. I definitely recommend this tour...
Josipa was wonderful. Such an intersting tour and she answered all of our questions , and did not rush and was incredibly knowledgable . Highly recommend her !!
An excellent and detailed tour focusing on Diocletian's Palace with special emphasis on the development of the ancient city, its substructures, and the medieval development above it.
I was born and raised in Split and booked Josipa because I thought I could learn something from her. And I wasn’t wrong. Josipa is konwledgeable, professional and warm. She took me to some hidden gems outside the regular route and I really had a great time with her.
We really enjoyed this tour and learned a lot about the history and architecture of the Diocletian Palace.
Amazing walking tour, guide was very knowledgeable, and made the experience memorable. I love historical architecture and the guide talked a lot about architecture, history, and the influences that Diocletian had when designing the palace.
I really enjoyed this tour. Josipa was an absolutely excellent and informative guide. Over 90 minutes she gave a summary of the history and architecture of the city centre - plenty of detail, but not overwhelming! - and I felt like there was an excellent balance between a general overview and other interesting facts that came up in conversation.
We had a wonderful time on out tour. Josina (sp?) is very knowledgable and friendly. She answered all our questions, gave us great recommendations for sightseeing and restaurants. Some tour guides just rattle off information, but she spoke clearly and slowly and allowed extra time to answer our questions. She spent more than two hours with us! Wonderful tour.
Very nice tour ! Josipa was captivating. nous avons adorés notre visite avec Josipa. Je vous le recommande fortement. I highly recommend booking a tour with this tour guide.
We got a private tour since no one else had booked the same time. The guide was very pleasant, and told a lot of interesting facts about Split and its history. We learned a lot about Split, and saw several places which we probably wouldn't have found without the tour. We got a lot more out of the palace area than we would have gotten without the tour. Booking the morning time slot was a good choice, since it wasn't as hot and crowded in the old town as it was later in the day. We also got many tips on what to do and see later on our holiday, which was very nice. Overall we were very satisfied with the tour, and would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about the palace area.
This tour was fantastic!! Josipa was the tour guide and she was so knowledgeable about the history, architecture, and archeology of the palace. She brought me to perfect locations for photos. Shared folklore and suggested other activities in the area. This tour met all my expectations and more. I highly recommend this tour.
Really excellent tour! Josipa was very knowledgeable and fun, and paced the tour perfectly. She was able to answer all our questions and gave us great recommendations of what else to see & eat while we were in town.
Josifa, was fantastic. Knowledgeable, personable, very informative. The way she structured the tour was very cohesive and had a natural flow. The stories and explanations were incredibly interesting. And the fact that it was only a small group rather than 20 people following a paddle pop stick made it so much more personal and enjoyable. Thoroughly recommend this tour.
Josipa was a great guide. Very informative. Just delightful. We ended up with a private tour based on when we signed up for the tour which was a bonus!
Josipa was awesome!! She was very knowledgeable and easy to understand! Please pay her very well. I would recommend her
Josipa was a wealth of information and really brought the palace complex to life. This tour made our Split experience. 10/10 would recommend this tour.
An exceptional experience 😊 Josipa is not only a very knowledgeable guide but also an amazing story teller, so the time just flew by and I learned a lot. You can tell that the tour is very well planned and thought through to the tiniest detail. I am super happy that I booked the experience on my first day in Split, because it have me quite a few new ideas on how to make the remainder of my trip here more meaningful. Absolutely recommended!
An extremely informative tour by Josipa- whose historical knowledge and love of her adopted city shone through. Lots of tips and detailed answers to any questions that were asked from the group. Well worth paying a little more than other tours for a small group. Split is tiny, very busy and the streets narrow, less people meant more time for discussion and exploration. Highly recommended.
Very interesting historical tour within the walls of Roman emperor Diocletian's "retirement home" ( the whole of the old town of Split)
The professional guide runs her own tour and provides a well organized, tailored small group experience, pointing out the Roman history, architecture and subsequent building over the old city, including Diocletian’s palace, the streets, alleys and subterranean structures. This tour costs a bit more but is fully worth it to hear her explanation of excavation and preservation and obtain answers without the necessity of a radio earphone stringing your group out over half a block from the point of interest. Thanks for the history!
Wonderful Tour! Knowledgable and passionate about Split and the palace. Highly recommend this tour Great experience!!
Josipa is a wonderful and knowledgable tour guide. We learned so much about the history, architecture, and culture of the Palace annd Split. Her archeological background provided insights we wouldn’t have gotten from other guides. Her English is perfect. Our tour was so informative and special! We would definitely book a tour with her again.
Josepa is an excellent guide, very knowledgeable. She made our tour of Split and the Diocletian palace a delight. Each turn was a WOW moment, with her explanations of the incredible remnants of the palace, used for churches, living quarters, and other uses extremely interesting. We were very happy to learn so many historical and artistic facts.
Excellent tour with a learned guide (Josipa) and art historian who gave an interesting, cogent and layered tour of the palace. We really appreciated how she connected the history, geography and culture of Spit and why Diocletian built his palace at this peninsula. Highly recommended, especially if you are a history buff.
