Itinerary
Diocletian’s Cellars are among the best-preserved Roman underground structures in the world. They once supported the emperor’s private quarters above and were used for storage and daily palace operations. Today, they reveal the architectural brilliance of the Romans and offer a glimpse into life within the ancient palace.
The Peristyle is the central square of Diocletian’s Palace and served as the ceremonial heart of the imperial residence. Surrounded by grand colonnades, it was where the emperor appeared as a living god to be worshipped by citizens. Today, it remains a stunning example of Roman architecture and a vibrant gathering place in the historic core of Split.
The Vestibule was the grand entrance to the emperor’s private quarters within Diocletian’s Palace. Its circular shape and soaring dome created a dramatic transition from the public Peristyle to the private imperial residence. Even today, its acoustics and monumental form impress visitors and echo the power of Roman architecture.
The Golden Gate was the main northern entrance to Diocletian’s Palace, reserved for the emperor and high-ranking officials. Flanked by guard towers, it symbolized imperial authority and was part of the palace’s elaborate defensive system. Today, it stands as a majestic reminder of Roman power and urban planning in ancient Split.
The Temple of Jupiter was constructed between 295 and 305 as part of Diocletian's Palace. It was dedicated to the supreme Roman god and Diocletian's "divine father", Jupiter. The temple is located in the western, religious part of the palace. Since the Emperor unexpectedly abdicated the throne in 305 and arrived at the palace from Nicomedia earlier, finishing work on the construction of the Palace was stopped so parts of the Temple remained unfinished.

The tour was very enjoyable and insightful. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and provided excellent information throughout the tour. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone.
Nebo was truly a wonderful guide. Thoughtful, kind, intelligent. We learned a ton from him (he is professor and author) and enjoyed great conversation. He is a 10/10 guide — highly recommend
What an amazing tour of Diocletian’s Palace! The experience was both informative and engaging, bringing centuries of history to life in a way that was easy to understand and genuinely fascinating. Nebo was incredibly knowledgeable, answering all of our questions with enthusiasm and providing insights that went far beyond the typical tour. What I appreciated most was the relaxed pace—we never felt rushed despite the crowds, which allowed us to fully take in the architecture, stories, and rich history of this remarkable place. The conversation throughout the tour wasn’t just educational; it was interesting, interactive, and memorable. If you’re visiting Split, I highly recommend this tour for anyone who wants a deeper appreciation of Diocletian’s Palace and its significance in Croatian history. We will be recommending him to others
Over all it was amazing! He knew what he was talking about and it was learning about the history of Croatia!
Nebojsa was an incredible tour guide. He was knowledgeable and personable. I can’t find enough people to recommend him to!
Best Tour we have had in Croatia. Very instructive. You can feel the passion Nabo has about his country and history. Makes everything interesting. When you get such explanations you appreciate what you see. And so much to see and learn.
We had a great time in the tour with Prof. Nebo! He was very knowledgeable about the history of Split and Croatia, and we learned that the Croatia of today was shaped by different empires such as the Austrian-Hungarian, Ottoman, and Roman/Venetian. In a world where facts and knowledge can be found online, we were so refreshed and inspired to hear the history come alive during his tour. He also gave us many local recommendations for restaurants and sights in Split which was really helpful. Thank you Prof. Nebo and continue to inspire many tourists (maybe even locals too) with your vast knowledge and passion in the history of Croatia and Split.
We had a fantastic private tour of Split with our guide, Nibo. He was knowledgeable, engaging, and made the city’s history come alive. The tour was well-paced and personalized, and we learned so much while enjoying ourselves. Highly recommend Nibo for anyone visiting Split!
Nebo provided the most in-depth and fascinating tour of Diocletian's palace that can be found in Split. We were in split for 5 days and went on 4 tours and this was BY FAR the most interesting and entertaining. His breadth of knowledge was unparallel. I'm a history buff and couldn't wait to go. However, my daughter isn't into history and initially wanted to stay in the hotel. Not only did he keep her entertained, but she has also been sharing stories and wants to come back!!! He was also able to speak with authority on all things Croatia to include the conflicts in the 1990s - HE WROTE A BOOK ON IT! I cannot recommend his tour enough. It was the last tour we took on our last day. You would have thought we would have learned much of what he was telling us. NOPE! The details he included were captivating! I wish we had more days to take his other tours. I have been discussing and sharing as many details as I can remember about the palace since we got back. Frankly my friends and family are tired of hearing about it. They want to see it for themselves!! He made my daughter and me want to learn more! I can assure you will we will be back, and I can't wait to go on this tour and his other tours with the rest of my family.
I recently went on a guided tour of Diocletian’s Palace in Split, and it was absolutely worth it, especially because of our amazing guide. He was interesting, funny, and explained everything in such a captivating way that even the most ancient parts of the palace felt alive. From the very beginning, he kept everyone engaged with stories and little-known facts about the palace and Roman history. You could tell he really loved what he was doing. He didn’t just list historical fact, he made us feel like we were walking through the palace 1 700 years ago. We learned how Diocletian lived, why the palace was built the way it was, and how people still live inside the old Roman walls today.
I recommended everyone! The nature was breathtaking, but the guide Nebojsa is best part of this expirience : so proffesional, knowlwdgeable, friendly and fun.
An excellent guide – highly knowledgeable and very well-versed in the subject matter. On top of that, he is witty and entertaining. Highly recommended!
We had a unique city tour with our friendly and knowledgeable guide Nebo. He taught us a lot about local history and also told us where the best beaches are.
We had a fantastic experience on our tour of Split! Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the city’s history, which made everything so much more engaging. He was polite, well-mannered, and had a great sense of humor that kept things light and fun throughout. It never felt like a lecture — more like walking around with a very informed friend. We felt completely relaxed. Highly recommend!
An excellent tour, packed with information in a short time and offering a great insight into the city, its history, spirit, and culture — all from a local guide who lives and breathes this city and is also highly educated.
What an incredible experience! Our guide was not only super knowledgeable but also funny —we were learning and laughing the entire time. The way hr blended history, local stories, and fun facts with such natural humor made the whole tour feel more like an adventure with a friend than a typical sightseeing trip. Everything was well-organized, the pacing was perfect, and the little personal touches made it feel really special. If you’re looking for a tour that’s entertaining, informative, and full of personality—this is the one. I’d recommend it 100 times over!
This tour was one of the best experiences we've had in this beautiful Mediterranean city! Fun fact: our guide really was a well-read, witty professor who taught us a great deal about Split. Would recommend.
