Itinerary
This narrated tour begins when we pick you up at your Rapid City hotel at approximately 8:30 AM. We drive to Sturgis, the town made famous by the Motorcycle Rally which is held the first week of August. We will tell you about the history of the town, the motorcycle rally and Ft. Meade, a peace-keeping fort built in 1878 that is still used by the Veterans’ Administration and the South Dakota National Guard. Then we continue up to the town of Spearfish where we enter the scenic Spearfish Canyon with its limestone cliffs, waterfalls, evergreen, birch and aspen trees. We will stop for pictures and viewing.
From Spearfish Canyon we drive into the town of Lead to tell you about the history and view the historic buildings and landmarks there. There is a 30 minute stop at the Homestake Mine Visitor Center to see the open cut mine. This was the largest gold mine in the western hemisphere for 125 years before it closed. It was given to the State of South Dakota and is now being used as an underground National Science Lab. The mine is 8,000 ft deep.
After this visit we drive to Deadwood with a stop in Pluma at the Chubby Chipmunk Chocolate Shop where they make the best truffles in the Black Hills (if you want to stop!). We continue to Deadwood, the historic town that is part of the last Gold Rush in the Continental USA in 1876. We can drive up to Mt. Moriah Cemetery where you may walk in to see the graves of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane and others. If you would rather not walk you may take the local one hour bus tour that takes you into the cemetery right up to the graves. You may tour the 1892 Victorian home called the Adams House, go to the Tatanka Buffalo Jump bronze statues, or visit the Adams Museum. You will have time to explore the downtown area and its historic buildings including the place where Wild Bill Hickok was shot, Saloon #10 with all its antiques and historic pictures. Guests will have time to buy their lunch here during the tour.

This was a great tour. Our guide, Bruce, was fantastic. Extremely knowledgeable and made sure we saw all the major sights. I would highly recommend the tour and him.
Our tour guide, Bruce, was very pleasant and easy to talk to. Very knowledgeable of the area. He had snacks and water in the car. A really nice person and made the tour fun!
Our guide was fantastic. It was kind of rainy but, that didn’t stop us. If you get the chance do this one.
Of all my tours this was my least favorite. Really wanted more time in Deadwood which we were told we would have. That was not the case. We wanted to make sure we saw the shootout skit, which we did but really did not have time to eat lunch. We seemed to make stops and spend time on things that could have been more abbreviated. The other four people on the tour were great. Just happens that we met them at dinner that night after the tour and I think it is safe to say they were not overwhelmed either. Our guide was Nick, he was nice, personable but just did not seem to get into it as other guides do. Don't get me wrong, it was ok, but would not recommend it or do it again. That is not the case with other tours. This was my second to Mt. Rushmore and they were both outstanding.
Punctual, thorough, cordial personable service with excellent knowledge of the area that was shared with us
Our tour guide was great, he was very personal able, easy to talk to, and we even saw Mountain Goats!! We had door to door service and never had to wait!!
Excellent tour! Nick our guide did an amazing job of giving us a little history of the area along with a great deal of present day information. He was professional, adaptable, friendly, and very knowledgeable about the Black Hills area. We couldn't have asked for a better experience. An absolutely perfect day for what we were looking for!
Affordable Adventures was the company I was booked to. Scott was our tour guide. This was a private tour and we got all we paid for. He was extremely knowledgeable with the areas as well as the history. He was also very helpful. I would book with him again. Deadwood by itself is well work the trip. The history lesson from Scott was amazing.
The accommodations were comfortable. The guide was pleasant, provided bottle water and snacks. Seen a lot of sights during the tour.
Susan and Ellen were wonderful guides through the Black Hills Visiting places where nature combines with small bodies of small Sharing their knowledge and mixing their personal stories. They made the day very pleasant
Jerry was a great guide. He showed us beautiful vistas in Spear. He had great knowledge of the area. Took us to a great place for lunch in Deadwood
What a beautiful trip to see the northern black Hills of SD. Scott our guide was our guide on three tours we took with Affordable Adventures. Scott was very knowledgeable of each of these areas and provided the history and importance to each area of this tour. Scott is a great/safe driver and the Chrysler Town and country is immaculately kept, the air condition and ease of getting in and out was superb. Scott made sure there were plenty of snacks and water for each the tours we took with a Affordable Adventures. We visited and drove through the Spearish Canyon and stopped to see the beautiful bridal veil falls and the stream with the local trout visible. We drove through the beautiful town of Lead on our way to Deadwood. We saw saloon no. 10 both old and new. Where Wild Bill Hickcock was shot in a local card game. I participated in the reenactment of the shooting. We also took a bus tour to the grave of Wil Bil and Calamity Jane’s grave at the beautiful Mount Moriah cemetery. We had a wonderful lunch at the Midnight Star bar there. This town is beautiful and alive with a lot to do and see. I’d like to thank Anne(Owner of Affordable Adventures) and her Staff specifically Stephanie. They both were instrumental in helping us plan this trip. This is a very reasonable price for the quality of this tour. I highly recommended taking this if you would like to experience some of the beautiful towns within the Black Hills of South Dakota absolutely a fabulous tour!
This was a very pleasant day. Anne, our tour guide was wonderful. She was so knowledgeable and full of history information. The van had snacks and water which was appreciated. Lunch in Deadwood was delicious at the #10 saloon.. the scenery was beautiful in spearfish canyon. The towns of Deadwood was just like we expected it would have looked like in the early days and had a lot of history. We enjoyed the tour of the cemetery on Mount Moriah with wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane buried there. A very enjoyable day and Anne made it especially great!
Our guide, Russ, was very knowledgeable about the area and was very patient with our questions and needs. We really enjoyed our tour.
Scott lead us on a great adventure through Fort Mead where we learnt some more interesting American history, went through Sturgis and received great info on the Bike rally which for two Harley enthusiasts was awesome, then into some beautiful scenery through Spearfish Canyon finishing in Deadwood for some more history with Wild Bill and Calamity Jane. A totally wonderful experience with a local who was fun and informative and made it a personal experience, along with his assistant Jerry! Recommend these guys!
Nick was great!! Friendly and very knowledgeable!! Weather wasn’t as nice as we’d hoped but all in all it was a lovely time and great experience!
Absolutely the best!! Since Ms Ann has so much family history herself in the area, we felt like we had the “inside track” on each and every location. She was extremely accommodating and made sure that we got to do EVERYTHING we wanted to do plus several other things she suggested!! We totally recommend this tour!!
The tour was great. I like to learn about the places I visit, and I was incredibly pleased with Ann’s knowledge. I was on the tour with a couple from California, and we did the Badlands and Wall Drug together the day before. It was really nice to be able to have a small group and to be able to ask questions. I highly recommend this tour company. Ann also gave me recommendations for activities that she knew I would enjoy.
As a native of Lead in the Black Hills, Ann Thompson, our guide and owner of Black Hills Affordable Tours, shared personal history and anecdotes with us. Before returning to Rapid City, Ann embellished the day with a ticketed tour of a restored mansion built by Deadwood’s most successful tycoon during the Gold Rush. We had ample time in Deadwood for lunch in a casino, browsing the shops & tasting the wines of South Dakota.
It is both site seeing and a history of the area. Hiking can be short or longer. It was customized to meet our needs. We stopped often to take pictures and flexibility in what we did in the town of Lead. Our guide Nick was extremely knowledgeable and dedicated to making sure we had a good experience
Ken was not only personable but very knowledgeable and answered all our questions. We saw a lot and he made sure we got the best pictures
Ann is a great guide! She has vast knowledge of history and culture of the region. Being born snd raised in Black Hills area, she will share a wealth of personal experiences and stories. All her stories are captivating and entertaining. Also, Ann is a very safe driver. I highly recommend taking a tour with her.
