Itinerary
Our entire day trip is within the Black Hills National Forest that covers an area 125 miles long and 65 miles wide, a 1.25-million acre forest! We spend about 2 hours driving time that is interspersed between the sites we visit as outlined below. Along the way, we take in the beauty of the Black Hills that encompasses rugged rock formations, canyons, gulches, open grassland, and mountain lakes, including learning about the rich history of the area, including Custer's expedition to the area in 1874.
Our first stop is Mount Rushmore National Memorial where the rich history of the United States is told through the lives of presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham enshrined on Mount Rushmore. Through their lives we learn about the birth, growth, development and preservation of this country. The memorial is surrounded by the beauty of the Black Hills.
Leaving Mount Rushmore, we wind our way over to Crazy Horse Memorial passing by Horsethief Lake, a beautiful mountain lake, and Black Elk Mountain, the highest peak in SD at 7,244 feet above sea level. Crazy Horse Memorial is the largest carving in the world, depicting the Oglala Lakota war chief, Crazy Horse, riding a horse and pointing to his tribal land. Housed within the Crazy Horse Memorial complex, is the Indian Museum of North American.
Next stop is in the small town of Custer for lunch. You’re on your own for lunch here, having the opportunity to choose the restaurant of your choosing. Custer is the oldest and first permanent settlement established in the Black Hills by European Americans.
Next stop is Custer State Park, a 72,000 acre state park and wildlife refuge. The park is home to a herd of 1,500 bison and a variety of other wildlife that roam free over the varied terrain that includes rolling prairie grasslands and rugged mountains.
We will stop here for a short break to stretch our legs, watch a 20 minute film on the history of Custer State Park (narrated by Kevin Costner), then head out to find the buffalo and other wildlife on the Wildlife Loop Road.
The Iron Mountain Road is one of the most scenic and unique roads in America! It winds through the countryside, traversing through three tunnels, navigating up and down switch-backs and pig-tail-bridges with views of Mount Rushmore along the way. It was built to connect Custer State Park with Mount Rushmore. It was intentionally engineered to make travelers slow down to enjoy the beauty of the area. Along the way, we drive through the Norbeck Wildlife Preserve, a wilderness designated area.
Iron Mountain Summit, also called the Peter Norbeck Scenic Overlook. From the summit at 5,450 feet above sea level, we are at the same elevation as Mount Rushmore which can be seen in the distance across the valley below, about 1 mile away. A breathtaking view! We can also see Black Elk Peak, the highest point in South Dakota at 7,200 feet above sea level. It is also the highest peak east of the Rockies.
Our last stop of the tour is Keystone, dropping off any guests we picked up here before heading back to Rapid City.

Excellent tour. Neal was a fantastic tour guide. Highly recommend!
This tour is great. Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse are truly wonders of the modern world. Going through the Black Hills you see many native animals. In our case a herd of bison. Our tour guide was magnificent all through the long day.
Our tour guide was the best ! Very knowledgeable and personable. Great way to spend day one of our bucket list vacation.
Trip was completely ruined by extremely poor customer service. After a wonderful day tour, I was assigned a space on a bench about 14 inches wide. When I asked for a different seat, I was told it wouldn't happen because they were completely full. No help no refund live with it or leave. I might add there were 23 completely empty tables and of the 19 that had people, not all of them were full.
We had a great tour with Neil. He was very friendly and informative. He was very knowledgeable on Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse and the Badlands.
Great tour with knowledgeable guide in a clean comfortable mini bus. Saw all the sites Visit to Mount Rushmore could have been longer. Only downside was the length of the overall tour. It made for a long day. Would probably do 1/2 tours.
Great guide and so nice to have someone else do the driving. We could have had more time at mt Rushmore. The van was comfortable and clean. However it is a very long day and I would probably choose a half day tour if I had the time.
The tour was terrific. Neil was a very knowledgeable and engaging guide, who shared a lot of information about the sights we saw. Thoroughly enjoyed the day with Black Hills Day Trips. Mt Rushmore and the Crazy Horse monument were definitely the highlights.
An excellent, informative guide. Amazing views of the Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse memorials. Custer National Park and the Black Hills are full of impressive landscapes, wildlife and natural beauty. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip and we recommend it wholeheartedly.
From the start of the day, Neil was very inviting complimentary and will informed as we through the black hills and Custer State Park other sites along the way Rushmore and crazy horse by far we’re outstanding the information being able to see it and feel like you can actually touch it from the distance, although so far away to go through the Custer State Park with wild Buffalo and other animals feet away from your vehicle roaming free to end up with a postcard view of Mount Rushmore again was exhilarating. I highly recommend this tour group to anyone it’s for the solo traveler or anyone in a group much to see much to take in and grasp the beauty that the Sioux and the Lakota shared for many years and the work that has been done is remarkable
Full Day. Neal was great. He continually described the sights and answered all questions. We were met on time and the tour ended on time.
Neil was a great tour guide. He had an extensive knowledge of history and the Black Hills area. He was extremely helpful with what to do at each stop during the tour. The small group made it even more enjoyable. I recommend this tour to anyone visiting the Black Hills area (singles and couples)
When you make it to South Dakota, for the best, most relaxing, and informative experience, let a local do the driving to Mountain Rushmore and the surrounding state parks and national forests. Neil, with Black Hills Day Trips is an excellent guide with a wealth of local history knowledge that keeps the journey between each breathtaking stop entertaining. The tour bus was spotless and comfortable. Pick up was on time and there was plenty of time at each destination to see it all before re-boarding for the next stop on the day’s itinerary. The scenic journey is filled with winding roads and various park entry points and it was so relaxing to let Neil take the wheel so we could take in the incredible beauty of the area, including lots of local wildlife! Highly recommend!
Neal was a great tour guide. He was very knowledgeable and personable. My wife and I were sad that the trip ended. We learned much about the history of the area and the US. We would love to have Neal on other trips.
Great tour with lots of historical information and beautiful views. Neal was very personable and knowledgeable and I'm sure we would have missed so much had we tried to do this on our own.
100% Hands Down, the absolute best tour we have ever taken. Super punctual, exceptional knowledge on all the sites and local area. Would recommend Neal 10 out of 10 times !!
It was a great experience. Everyone in the group were punctual and fun. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and gave great stories about the places
AWESOME! Not much else to say. Anyone who is anywhere near here needs to visit this historical landmark. Easy access with lots of parking. Only suggestion is to come early in the morning (we got there at 0730) to take advantage of the morning light on the monument…and lack of people!
The tour was very educational and fun. The trip on a whole was very enjoyable. I learned a lot about Rapid City and really learned a lot about the monument s and Custer state park.
Neal is a great guy, took us to places and told us things we should see an do while there, knew times of shows to see to learn more about the area. Highly recommend him and this tour
Outstanding. Neal our guild was highly informative. Great way to take in a large area on your first trip in the area. Very reasonable priced
A great and wonderful guided tour. Our guide, Neal, gave us very interesting informations. We stopped for 1h15 at Mount Rushmore and it’s beautiful; we stopped 1h15 at Crazy Horse and took the bus ride to see the memorial closer (it worths the 5$ it costs), we had an hour lunch break at Custer; and after lunch it was a bus ride in Custer state park where we saw more than a hundred of bisons, antilopes, prairie dogs, deers and horses; with stops to watch documentary or to take pictures,… We had a wonderful day, cold bottle of water and choice of light snacks. Thank you Neal for a SUPER guided tour! It worths every penny
You will learn more about the history and understand how these things came to happen with the tour then you'll ever learn on your own
It is a long day, but our driver and guide, Neil, is very knowledgeable and provides s lot of information.
Great trip with a great guide! Only had one day for tourism, so was thrilled to find a tour that accepted solo travelers and had so much included. Next time I’m swinging through with the family we’ll probably just book this exact excursion for the whole group.
Neil and Becky were great tour guides as they were very knowledgeable about the area and happy to answer any questions. They also made a point of finding out where wildlife could be spotted so that I could see as much as possible. We covered a huge amount of ground in one day, always with plenty of time to visit the sights. Seeing a herd of bison was a thrill. The scenery in the Black Hills is very beautiful and the towns historic. This trip is excellent value for money and really enjoyable.
Great service, clean vehicle. Neal provided a nice historical overview while traveling from site to site. Best way to see the Black Hills when you are limited to just the one day.
A great day out! Lots of interesting things to see. However, be warned: They keep to a tight schedule - no time for dawdling!
If you want to see the wonderful history of South Dakota? This tour is perfect. The driver and hostess were very knowledgeable very friendly and went out of the way to accommodate pick up and delivery of guest. They planned the sites that we went to and the highway that we travel all in one day and they did it very efficiently. They let you off at the exhibit and pick you up up at each site and they knew exactly where to see the Buffalo and the animals of the park.
Neal and Becky were excellent guides! They were very knowledgeable about the area! We saw much more in one day than we could have on our own! Tour and the area exceeded our expectations!
Good tour! Maybe would have liked a little more time at the primary attractions. Lunch in the town of Custer was a disappointment
Neal was an amazing host. Very informative and engaging. Highly recommended tour especially if time is short and you want to get as much in as possible.
They skipped few places in the itinerary and I was disappointed. They don’t even offer to click pictures which most tour guides do.I would say it’s ok
The owner-operator of this day tour was most accommodating. I had the best day out in the Black Hills and learnt so much of the region's history. It was a long day but we packed so much in.
What an amazing experience! Neil was fantastic! I was blown away with how amazing this experience was!
Really great day trip The emails were answered promptly and the pick up was on time Neil was absolutely wonderful and I had such a great time The weather was just perfect Snacks and drinks were supplied plus just so much information from Neil
A tour I booked some months before arriving in Rapid City. With such limited time, I needed a day trip that included Crazy Horse, Custer National Park and of course Mount Rushmore. A perfect 10 hour tour with a 7am pick up allowed us to beat the crowds throughout our day trio. A wonderful local company with extensive local knowledge. I would absolutely recommend this trip.
The whole trip was great. Neal was awesome, the information and history he told us was great. We would have never know all of it had we traveled by ourselves. Enjoyed meeting the other travelers!
This was an amazing trip. It was very well organized. We saw breathtalimg views, learned a lot of history and saw sheep, antelope, turkeys and Bison. Mount Rushmore was a highlight. Highly recommend this trip
Our homebase was Hills City, South Dakota. This put us in the heart of the Black Hills. There were plenty of restaurants and shopping near our Comfort Inn hotel which was great. We spent several days driving through the Black Hills. We drove to Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and Custer Natl Park. These drives provided wonderful scenery and wildlife photos. One day we drove to Deadwood, which is an original old west town. Shop a little, had lunch in an historic hotel and entertained a few casinos. While leaving the Black Hills drove through the Badlands Natl Park, which was well worth the side trip. One cannot forget to stop at Wall Drug in Wall, South Dakota. Yes, it is a tourist trap of one square block, but it is so worth it. All in all, it one of the best trips we have ever taken.
Highly recommend this tour. Neil was very friendly and knowledgeable. Views were outstanding and the wildlife was amazing. We had bison walking beside us and actually blocking the road for a while
The tour was outstanding, exceeding my expectations. Neil, our guide, was very knowledgeable about the history of the Black Hills. The tour was well worth the cost. I would do it again.
Crazy horse and Mt Rushmore were great human feats. Loved finding herd of Buffalo grazing near the road. Driver shared lots of historical and landscape information and current local news husband and I enjoyed the trip.
Visit to Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and wildlife loop. Very knowledgeable, and flexible if necessary. We chose this tour because it was a maximum of 12 people. We ended up with no one else, a private tour!
It was awesome. The driver was so knowledgeable. My mother and I enjoyed it alot thank you for helping us make awesome memories
Neal, provided us with a beautiful and stress-free day in the Black Hills. We visited Mt. Rushmore, the Crazy Horse monument, Custer State Park, the Wildlife loop and the Iron Mountain Road. Maximum guests is 12, but there were only 4 guests on our tour that day. Neal was punctual, but the trip was not rushed. He often provided more history and information as we journeyed than the docents. He offered insights on how to make the most out of our stops and even recommendations for lunch. We definitely picked the right tour since this was our first time to the Black Hills!
Neal was very welcoming, and we felt comfortable riding with him. Neal provided interesting history and insights to our various stops. He tried his best to help us see wildlife on the Wildlife Loop in Custer State Park, but the buffalos were into hiding that day. We would recommend taking this tour as it was a great way to see sites and not have to worry about driving.
This tour was 5⭐️!!!! Neal was excellent! It was so nice to see so many sights without the responsibility, Highly recommend this tour and Neal!
Really enjoyed this trip. The day was well planned and maximized what we were able to see. The tips given before each stop were very helpful. Well worth it to be able to sit back and enjoy the ride and amazing views!
