We stopped here for the night during a cross-country road trip and loved it. The Hotel Alex Johnson is a gorgeous historic property right in the middle of downtown Rapid City, meaning we could park the car and easily walk to restaurants and shops nearby. The 1920s charm and unique history give it so much character compared to a standard highway motel. Check-in was smooth, the rooms were clean and comfortable after a long day of driving, and the rooftop views from the Vertex Sky Bar were an amazing bonus. It was the perfect, relaxing pit stop to recharge before hitting the road again. Highly recommend!
We did not stay here but randomly found ourselves in the lobby. The wonderful woman at the front desk answered all the questions and did not appear to be bothered by them, especially considering it was later in the evening. If we ever find outselves in Rapid City again, this hotel will be on the top of my list of accommodation options.
Pretty nice hotel in a great location. It is an old hotel that has been updated so there are areas where you can tell it’s old. We had a two room suite with the living room separate from the bedroom. Our room had a few areas that could’ve been improved. The entertainment center in the living room was missing a handle, the bottles in the shower were falling off the wall and would really be better in the back of the shower (opposite the shower head) instead of on the wall where they get bumped, and the bed sounded like it was going to break every time you moved but it was clean and they do housekeeping daily. The bathroom is small so if you are a bigger person you may have trouble on the toilet. They only offer valet parking which is $28 a day. If you use the Hilton app just note it mentions you ca use the breakfast credit at Starbucks but (as of July 2026) you can’t. Thankfully I let the desk know this since we didn’t have time to go anywhere else the morning we discovered it was wrong and they credited me for the day. Also if you have a room with two doors the mobile key will only work on one. The maintenance people are awesome as well. They quickly came by the room to see if they could fix that problem and then came back to tell us when they found out the mobile key only works on one.
My wife and I recently stayed at the Alex Johnson Hotel for three nights, and we had a wonderful experience. The hotel is beautiful, full of historic charm, and located in a great spot for exploring Rapid City and the surrounding area (Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, Badlands National Park).
What really made our stay exceptional was the outstanding customer service. The hotel manager, Mitch, went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and that everything met our expectations. His professionalism, attentiveness, and genuine care for guests truly stood out and made us feel valued.
Thank you to Mitch and the entire team for making our stay so enjoyable. We would gladly stay here again and highly recommend the Alex Johnson Hotel to anyone visiting Rapid City.
The Hotel Alex Johnson is the place to stay in downtown Rapid City. This historic hotel is beautiful and an easy walk to everything in downtown Rapid City. I stayed in May 2026 for 3 nights in Room 403, a king junior suite. I was very happy with the room, it was spacious, the bed very comfortable, and everything was very clean. Cynthia at the front desk was wonderful - very professional, helpful, and friendly. I was traveling alone and Cynthia made sure my stay was a good experience. I had read reviews about the Valet Parking, but my experience was entirely positive. Adam helped me with my luggage when I arrived, gave me a card explaining the procedure for retrieving my car, and sent me a text link to request the car when I wanted to retrieve it. This worked flawlessly. I never had to wait more than 10 minutes for my car to be brought up from their lot. If you are traveling with luggage the valet parking is worth the price. I had dinner at their restaurant Juniper at Vertex Sky Bar which was also first rate. My server Hailey was great and made suggestions when I couldn’t decide which salad to order. She also helped me choose a wine, as I decided to splurge and know nothing about wine. The Hotel Alex Johnson is a first-class hotel at reasonable rates and I highly recommend the hotel and restaurant for anyone planning a stay in downtown Rapid City.
