We had great expectations for this speakeasy pub crawl having done other walking tours in Charleston. Sadly we were very disappointed. The tour guide was very nice however the content and presentation were not good. We walked blocks after meeting her with no history along the way. Arrived at a cool speakeasy bar but were charged high prices for the drinks and 20% large party tax even though we all ordered separately. The tour guide gave some history of prohibition however she was very hard to hear with the music playing in the bar. It definitely wasn’t engaging. We decided it probably was not going to improve at the other 2 stops so decided to leave the tour. This should have been really cool with all the history in Charleston but this tour didn’t hit the mark.

Itinerary
Step back into the roaring 1920s, when Charleston was a hotbed of bootleggers, speakeasies, and federal raids. On this spirited pub crawl, we’ll uncover the city’s wild Prohibition-era past—starting with the imposing U.S. Customs House, once a stronghold in the fight against illegal liquor. From whispered deals on the docks to hidden bottles behind bar counters, you’ll explore how Charleston danced around the law—and raised a glass anyway. Cheers to rebellion, rumrunners, and the city that never stayed dry.
While best known for its soaring steeple and sacred history, St. Philip’s Church played a quieter role during Prohibition—as a rumored lookout point and meeting spot in the Holy City’s underground world of bootleggers and backroom deals. Just steps from where the law preached temperance, locals whispered about hidden stashes and secret sips. In a city where sacred met scandal, St. Philip’s stood at the crossroads of faith, folklore, and forbidden spirits.
High Cotton, a beautifully restored former bank building in Charleston’s Historic District, is where elegance, wealth, and rebellion once collided. Named after the Southern phrase “living on high cotton,” this landmark reflects the prosperity of Charleston’s cotton-trade era and the lavish lifestyle of the city’s elite. But beneath the refined atmosphere lies a more controversial story. Local legend connects the building to the fiery temperance activist Carry A. Nation, famous for storming saloons with a hatchet during her crusade against alcohol in the early 1900s.
Rudy Royale reflects a spirited history but behind its modern Southern charm lies a connection to one of the most controversial periods in American history - Prohibition. During the era of the 18th Amendment, when the sale and production of alcohol became illegal across the United States from 1920 to 1933, Charleston’s bars and backrooms transformed into hidden speakeasies where liquor continued to flow despite federal law. Charleston remains a city that resisted quietly, celebrates loudly, and keeps its spirits full behind closed doors.

Friday night is not the best night to do a pub crawl in Charleston, because, well, it is Friday night and very busy in the bars. Victoria was amazing as a tour guide and even through the rainy weather, guided us throughout!! She provided history, humor and personality to the tour!!
Learn something with cocktails. Fun for friends or couples. Walk off the cocktails between speakeasies.
Kendall was a great guide. Took us to some amazing places! She had a wealth of knowledge about the area and prohibition. It was such an informative afternoon along with some great cocktails and recommendations.
Vanna was the best! She was exceptionally knowledgable about Charleston and prohibition. She made the tour fun and informative. Woukd highly recommend
We had so much fun! Victoria was a great tour guide, knowledgeable on the area and history. Speakeasy bar crawl was a great way to meet others in town as well.
The tour guide was excellent. Note that you need to purchase all drinks, and it was bars, not really speakeasy’s that we visited. Plus the bars were not expecting us so we didn’t always have a place to sit.
Our tour guide Vannah was amazing!!! So knowledgeable and passionate about Charleston history. She went above and beyond to provide a thorough, authentic, enjoyable tour. It flew by, we could have been out drinking and learning all day! I recommend to anyone visiting Charleston, even if you have just a short 2-hour window.
Meet some great people on this tour and guide was very knowledgeable, only negative was we only went to two pubs/taverns and as tour is sold as a pub crawl I would have expected to have at least visited several more.
Marco was great and very knowledgeable. The tour was really enjoyable and the other participants were so much fun.
The worst experience I have ever had with tour company. We walked to the first bar. It was closed. The guide takes us to a liquor store and talks for 20 minutes in 86 degree weather. We walked to the next bar and it was also closed. So he decides to take us to the rooftop bar next, but before that he wanted to sit under a tree to give us his speech. None of this was part of the tour. It took 4 stops before we got to the rooftop bar and were able to get water. We were all drenched in sweat and thirsty. At the rooftop bar the guide said we would spend one hour while he continued his speech and then go to the next bar to check if it was open. There was no information about landmarks or speakeasy bars. The information on this tour is misleading and I do NOT recommend. I left after 45 minutes because it was excruciatingly hot at the rooftop bar and I was ready to pass out. This provider has refused to refund my money. I have tried multiple times to reach out and I even contacted Viator. I feel like I can’t trust either company again if this is how customers are treated.
Great tour! Marco is a wealth of fun and knowledge. His command of the history of Charleston mixed in with the ambiance and vibe of all the local taverns, bars, and speakeasys we visited was exceptional! Highly recommend :-)
So fun seeing the bars and hearing the stories behind them. My advice to others is don’t be late. Each location is limited and when part of the group is late it can mess with the experience of the others.
We really liked Kendel. She was very knowledgeable and fun! She tooks us to some fun bars and recommend some good drinks!
Great tour, Vanna was great, very informative and entertaining. The history of this time period is very interesting
Loved Vanna's presentation, she had great stories to tell and was very animated in telling them. Highly recommend this tour.
Our tour was very fun and interesting. Our guide was very entertaining! Learned the many secrets of Prohibition.
Our guide was so much fun and gave a great tour! She brought the kind of energy and enthusiasm I wanted while visiting Charleston.
we learned a lot it was very informative, and guide was very knowledgeable. It was his first time being a tour guide, and he did a great job.
Andee was great! She was personable and knowledgeable and was able to answer all of our questions. I liked how she tied history with the drinks and had drink recommendations at each spot. Thanks for a great trip!
Annie was a great tour guide! It was a very chill and fun tour. She even had drink recommendations! -
Kendall was an awesome guide! Very knowledgeable and so fun!! Would recommend to anyone that asks for something to do in Charleston!
One very cool speakeasy, but the other two places we stopped at are just normal bars. Kendall was very knowledgeable and friendly the entire time. She did a wonderful job on our tour.
Our guide was really good. She had some great insight and historical references regarding prohibition. Expected my backroom, secret bars that we didnt go to.
Kendall was great! She knew the history and just all around was amazing! We had a great time and our tour guide was amazing.
Disappointing. It started out with us waiting at the designated spot on the tour description for the tour guide. We were the only two in the tour. It was sweltering hot and finally as the tour time came and went we called the customer service line who got in touch with the tour guide who was waiting at a different address. We were on the same road and we were told to walk and meet her quite a way down. We found her and lo and behold we had to walk all the way back to the spot we were originally waiting where the first speakeasy was. Seemed ridiculous that she couldn’t just come and meet us since we literally retraced our steps from going to meet her. So the tour did not start off great. Regarding the speakeasies themselves, our first one was a speakeasy. The second one was a patio bar and the third one was a rooftop bar, hardly speakeasies. The patio bar had no bartender. Regarding the tour itself, being that it was called speakeasy saga. We expected to hear the history and stories about prohibition and that era. The guide was lovely, but didn’t give us much information on the subject. It was more or less three girlfriends meeting for cocktails. Disappointing as we were looking forward to hearing historical origins of the time. As I said, she was a lovely woman, but spoke mostly about herself and her life and even told us about her side businesses and gave us a business card to look up her sites online apparently to drum up business. Disappointing tour for sure. The tour definitely didn’t live up to its description.
Andee was amazing! We had such a great time with her and the rest of our group. I would absolutely recommend!
Easy going, guide encouraged meeting others, everyone was open to meeting new people and sharing experiences
Great experience! Jamie was very knowledgeable. The speakeasies that we visited were really neat and the drinks were awesome!
Andee was great and very knowledgeable! Was a fun way to see a different side of the city and the cocktails were great
The guide was super nice and friendly Just not a great tour Really only went to one Speakeasy Just not what we expected
We absolutely loved Andee!! She was so much fun and got the individual Groups to become cohesive with her personality and fun introductions. Loved the history and prohibition info. Wish there had been MORE!!!! Jessica at Vaute was really fun and welcoming. The French 75- yum!
Very informative. Our guide Andee was the best! She was knowledgeable and made the tour a lot of fun.
Very knowledgeable tour guide, great personality and kept us entertained the entire time! Would highly recommend!
Andee our guide was absolutely amazing. We all learned a lot about charleston. It was a perfect time and the drinks were good. Highly recommend Andee for your guide
We had a really great time! Vanna was such a great tour guide, she knows her history, she made it so fun that we laughed a lot. I highly recommend this tour.
We had a fantastic time on the Charleston Speakeasy Tour! The guide was knowledgeable, entertaining, and shared fascinating stories about Charleston’s history while introducing us to some unique hidden bars. The cocktails were excellent, and the atmosphere at each stop was memorable. It was the perfect mix of history, fun, and great drinks. Highly recommend for both visitors and locals looking for a different way to experience Charleston!
I should have read more reviews before booking bc this is not a Speakeasy tour. We only visited one speakeasy. While not what I expected, it was still enjoyable and our guide was very knowledgeable and very invested in the history. Learned a lot.
Hanna is amazing!….so pleasant knowledgeable and fun to do the tour with….highly recoommend to do!!!
Great group! Vanna was exceptional. The bars were interesting as well. Highly recommend but maybe on a cooler day.
We had a great time with Vanna on the tour. Lots of great info and a great way to see and learn about CHS!
Dana was amazing! She was very knowledgeable and passionate. You don’t really see people put in as much effort and time into their tours. Dana 1000% recommend!!!!
Great information on the unwrittn history of alcholic spirits of Charleston, from the colonial period thru the modern day. 👍👍🤪
Tour name had speakeasy in it, and we didn't visit one speakeasy. Our tour guide talked a lot about prohibition, but a person would assume the tour would visit at least one speakeasy. Name of tour was misleading.
Hannah was a great guide sharing history and myths related to prohibition in Charleston both. We enjoyed tasting period style cocktails.
We had so much fun. Drinks were delicious, the bars were fun and interesting, and we learned so much. Jamie was great!
This excursion far more than just exploring speakeasy’s. Our tour guide was very engaging and knowledgeable the stories and history behind each establishment as well as the story behind the nations approach to the nation ban on alcohol. I would recommend this tour for anyone who enjoys history with some great cocktails.
We had a great time with Jamie and a group of fun people! The first little speakeasy stop on his tour was the best, and we went back again later!
Our guide was very knowledgeable about probation as well as various laws and leaders that pertained to prohibition and alcohol related matters. The first stop was really cool but the last 2 stops seemed a little disorganized. It seemed like those 2 establishments were not aware that a big group was coming and no arrangements were made ahead of time to accommodate us.
Jamie was great. High energy with a lot of knowledge. 3 cocktails , listened to history while we drank. Definitely recommend.
