A must do in Charleston! Our guide, Dave, was an incredible wealth of Charleston history! We had a wonderful taste of 4 great restaurants in Charleston! (The 4th was a spice market that did not disappoint )!
Graham was an excellent guide who was not only knowledgeable about the cuisine but also the history of Charleston and its regional businesses .
Guide was engaging and knowledgeable. Food was delicious.
Loved this tour. Like all the other reviews said, this tour gives a TON of food. As a vegetarian, I felt totally included and still experienced authentic Southern food. Guide Diane Rice was so sweet and very knowledgeable.
Excellent experience, this was our second time going on this tour and having the best tour guide Faith to take us around. She was very knowledgeable, friendly, and could point us in the right direction on anything in Charleston.
Great, comprehensive tour. The food was excellent and our tour guide, Faith, was wonderful. She was extremely knowledgeable about the food and history of the city. She totally made the tour worth every penny!
We had a great experience on the Savor the Flavors Food Tour! Our tour guide, Gordon, was very knowledgeable about Charleston and made the tour enjoyable from start to finish. We visited four different locations, and each one was ready for us when we arrived. The service at every stop was excellent, and Gordon was always available if we needed anything. Our first stop featured BBQ, and it was delicious. The only downside was that the collard greens were much too salty for my taste, so I wasn't able to eat them. The Lowcountry boil at our second stop was a true Charleston experience. My kids had never tried one before, and they really enjoyed it. The Spice & Tea Exchange was a unique stop, and we had great samplings. I only wish we had a few more minutes there to explore everything the shop had to offer. Our final stop was in a restaurant with beautiful, unique architecture, and the food was good. However, it was a chain restaurant. I would have preferred for all of the food stops to feature restaurants that are unique to Charleston. One additional suggestion would be to end the tour with a dessert or chocolate stop. I think that would be the perfect way to finish the experience. Overall, the tour was definitely worth the money. We had a wonderful time, learned a lot, and I would absolutely do it again.
It was so much fun! Getting to see various places and try lots of food. Definitely had enough to eat! Dena was an amazing guide too!
Faith Milone was our group's tour guide. We were on a combined tour - History and the Savory Tasting Tour. We were a group of 18 and all of us thoroughly enjoyed all of the history and information Faith provided. She is a top-notch tour guide and the best I have ever seen. My only suggestion for improvement is to split the 2 restaurant stops further apart on the tour. The food was wonderful but we were so full from the 1st stop that we could not eat much at the 2nd stop.
A nice way to spend a couple of hours. Very relaxing and nice to try different food. Our tour guide Caitlin was wonderful. Felt like we were sitting and chatting with a friend
Not only a buffet of food but a buffet of history as well! This tour was superb and the classic southern dishes served along the walking tour were excellent.
Food was delicious and filling. There were some points where we were standing and the guide was pointing to other restaurants around us that we would not remember unless you had paper and pen. Otherwise fun!
Jim and I knew nothing about the food of South Carolina and Charleston in particular. Dave introduced us to pimiento cheese, shrimp and grits, and she-crab soup as well as many other succulent treats. We visited 3 restaurants which were friendly and welcoming. The high point of the tour was The Spice & Tea Exchange. Could have spent half a day there. We thoroughly enjoyed the food but even more Dave’s fine tour guide mixture of gastronomy and history. A big recommendation.
David was one of the best speakers we have toured with. He was very knowledgeable about the foods/ culture / and history of the area. It was great to hear him address everyone’s specific questions and areas of interest. He was passionate about his topic. We would not hesitate to tour with him again.
So, great tour guide named Graham! He answered a lot of our questions and is just a pleasant person. I highly recommend him. I gave the tour 4 stars because while there is plenty to eat, it is all savory food. The last stop was a tea and spice shop which was just a mouthful of spices on crackers—more savory. Would have been nice to have a dessert, something for those who like a bit of sweet. Isn’t key lime pie a southern favorite or what about Kilwins for ice cream or even a piece of chocolate candy? I sort of felt sick at the end with the taste of vinegary collards and then spice crackers. Definitely take that last stop off the menu.
Dana was an incredibly knowledgeable guide! Great way to discover some of the places I'll definitely include in my next visit. I was a bit disappointed to not get the she crab soup as it was what I looked forward to most & thought would be included from the write up as well as the BBQ- but it seems the restaurants change per tour & guide doesn't know ahead of time. Quite enjoyable for the comeraterie, but if you have specific dishes you want to try, you should probably map that out on your own.
The person doing the tour was amazing! The choices of the restaurants were not too notch. I appreciated their attention to us as a group. The touristy if if you get Faith!! Her history knowledge and story telling was above and beyond. The food was just so so
Outstanding tour! Included yummy food selections as well as interesting history of Charleston. Thank you Diane!
Our tour guide was Diane Rice and she was a wonderful tour guide, very pleasant and knowledgeable, it showed that she enjoys doing these tours. I thought the food tastings interesting and delicious, definitely generous portions. I haven't had a lot of southern style cooking, a lot of new experiences for me
Our guide was Graham and he was great. Very informative and professional. The food stops we did were excellent. I would do this tour again. Graham says every tour is a different stop.
Our first full day in Charleston was even more special thanks to Diane and Bulldog Tours! My husband and I went on the Savor the Flavors of Charleston Tour and not only did we try delicious food, but Diane also gave us great insight about Charleston's history, and local favorites. Book the tour - you won't be disappointed!
Diane made our food tour fun, informative and tasty as we traveled through the streets of Charleston. Great experience.
My husband and I took the Savor the Flavors of Charleston Tour With faith Milone as our guide. It was a small group which was very nice. Each stop was a delight and the food was a real treat. At Handy & Hot I had the lightest and most delicious biscuit. It quite literally melted in my mouth and lemonade with a hint of vanilla bean will be a Summer favorite. Christophe's Patissier was a special with macaroons and truffles. I've never had or thought of Shrimps and Grits the way they were prepared at Hyman's Seafood, but they were delicious and the fried chicken slider at Ruby Royale was a treat . Faith not only provided us with animated food history but also gave us history of delightful Charleston. At the end of our tour, I was having a great deal of knee pain from a previous knee replacement. I was not going to be able to go on Historical waking tour we had booked, but I wanted my husband to go. Faith was awesome as she recommended a hotel where I could sit and relax while my husband went on the tour and the lovely people at Ruby Royale let us sit for awhile till my knee felt better. All in all it was an excellent morning of food and history. I highly recommend this tour.
We really enjoyed our tour guide . She was friendly, polite and knowledgeable about the food in Charleston.. she was open to questions and shared her recipes ! I enjoyed listening about her experiences on recipe's! Unfortunately not all the food we expected was good ( chicken and biscuit was very salty ) . We kinda thought we were going to eat more of seafood.
The food, service and history provided were very well done. The food at all the stops was great! The tour guide, Frannie, was very knowledgeable.
We enjoyed Everything about the experience! Our guide Diane was amazing and made everyone feel at ease … very relatable and very knowledgeable. The food places were she took us were great! Overall a great experience. Highly recommended!
We visited/tasted at 3 very different restaurants and a spice mart. The food was outstanding. Our guide Diane was extremely knowledgeable about Charleston, its history, and its food. Her warm and friendly manner helped make it a wonderful experience.
Jade is an exceptional guide. She has a wealth of information to share with her tour groups. She is friendly, outgoing and knows her subject well. Enjoyed the variety of local foods as well!
This was phenomenal! Our guide, Andrew, was so knowledgeable and entertaining . This is a must do. The restaurants and bakery we visited were spectacular, and the food samplings werr great !
Be prepared to enjoy some delicious food while learning about the culinary history of Charleston. It was also a great walking experience around the French Quarter.
Love food tours! We had some great things, & some dishes that were totally new to me. Our guide, Fran, did a phenomenal job of telling us history while we walked the lovely streets of Charleston
We had used this company a little over a year ago on a walking tour so decided to use them again. Dave was our guide and he was great. Plenty of food knowledge and kept us engaged at each stop. Made for an enjoyable afternoon. While it is a little on the pricey side it was still worth the adventure. I know the restaurants change so each experience will be different. We weren’t fans of all the restaurants but still enjoyed ourselves.
Overall I had a nice time, and learned a lot. I left full and with a stronger connection to the Charleston but certain details were missing to make this a 5star review. Jade was a good guide for our small group of 4. Our venture through Charleston felt more like a food history lecture with tastings than a tour. Jade was very knowledgeable and knew lots of info about the restaurants, tastings, and the food ways that brought them to the area. With all the info there wasn't much time to chat and engage with the other guests or guide. I would've appreciated breathing room from the stories and some photos of our time together. The food was great. I loved the first stop though it didn't fit in with the rest of the restaurants. It was up-scale with refined food whereas the remaining stops offered humble Southern cooking. My expectations were set high with the first restaurant and leveled out from there. The spice shop was a crowd favorite. My partner and I would've appreciated more opportunities to buy a drink at our longer stop-overs but weren't afforded the chance. With how much knowledge Jade shared with us I'm sure the History and Ghost tours are wonderful but this food tour missed the mark for me.
Our tour started off great with an excellent guide, Nancy, who has a terrific knowledge of Charleston’s history, architecture, and restaurants. Our first stop at Victoria’s on King was a delightful sample of Low Country cooking with very thoughtful commentary on the cuisine. Unfortunately, the next two stops were nowhere near as good. Mesu was supposedly an eclectic mix of Asian (sushi) and Mexican and failed in both areas. Both the lobster roll and the beef taco were uninspired and hardly distinctive. There was no commentary, nothing unique to Charleston, and the staff seemed totally indifferent. Next door at Bourbon N’ Bubbles we fared no better. It is basically a glamourous bar and the staff is totally focused on their extensive selection of whisky. The tastings were a deviled egg and a chicken tender on a roll. Again no commentary, no culinary history to speak of, and nothing unique about the food. The last stop for dessert at Hotel Bennett’s La Patisserie was well done and the pastry was nicely presented although not uniquely Charleston. All in all, this tour was not “seafood heavy” as touted on the website. Very ordinary, hardly representative of the Charleston food scene, and not a good value.
We loved our guide -- Dena Diorio, a local travel and food writer. She was friendly, encouraged questions, and was very knowledgeable about the history of Charleston food and the recent restaurant scene in the city. We visited one higher-end place and two more casual spots, plus a tea and spice store. The food was great at all three locations. We appreciated that Bull Dog accommodated my wife's desire to avoid red meat. Our tour was in the morning and we were lucky to be somewhat hungry again by dinnertime!
This tour was fantastic. Faith took us to several spots, all with delicious food. ) Certainly wasn’t hungry when it was over. ) Faith’s knowledge of history is unparalleled. We enjoyed every about this experience!
Very enjoyable tour. Really liked how Faith tied the history of Charleston to the food we were sampling. Length of tour was perfect
We did the food tour with Diane. She was wonderful. Three restaurants and a spice shop. I’ve done several food tours before and, unfortunately, this one, although good, was not great. The first item was a raw oyster. Since only ~47% of people eat raw oysters, I don’t think this was a good choice. I understand that a food tour gives you a chance to taste something you would not normally eat but I don’t think a raw oyster falls in this category. I would estimate that about ½ of the 12 people in the group did not eat it. The other tastings were a burrata appetizer and shrimp and grits. Both were good. The second stop was “The Spice and Tea Exchange.” This is a franchise that has locations in many cities. I’m not sure why this was included in a local food tour. The next two restaurants and their food were fine. We tasted fried chicken sliders, deviled eggs, banana pudding, BBQ, corn bread and collard greens. In my humble opinion one thing missing was she crab soup, which is one of Charleston’s signature dishes. All in all, Diane was great but I don’t think I’d do it again.
Everything about the tour was absolutely outstanding, from the architecture, to the history, to the food and drink. But above all else, it was our tour-guide and host Faith who made the evening so uniquely memorable. Her genuine enthusiasm, deep knowledge and wonderful storytelling ability brought Charleston to life and made this one of the most intriguing and magical tours I've ever taken.
Great guide Dena. She was very knowledgeable and the food was excellent. Charleston has many great options for low country cuisine.
The food was delicious but there was too much food. We stopped at 3 restaurants and had two big servings at each. There was too much walking. It was a very hot day and all that food and walking was too much. We went to a fourth place for chocolate and coffee. Choose restaurants that are closer together and they should serve smaller portions. With the smaller tour maybe the price could be reduced.
Unfortunately we were apart of the online mess up with delta. Our trip was canceled due to no pilots. But I was able to cancel our walking tour for the next day with no problems.
My sister lives here and this was a fun way to eat at different restaurants! Now that we have had little tastes, we will go back!!
Fran was so sweet and knowledgeable! She made sure we understood the tradition of the influence Charlestons food has on the south.
Another wonderful tour from Bulldog. Our guide Megan not only knew history but culinary history as well. It was amazing and interesting and just great fun. The food was delicious and different. Best crab and shrimp dip I've ever had. Don't miss this tourQ
This tour was so much fun! Such a great variety of food (well thought out). We got to try things we had never had before and all was so yummy. The history of Charleston our tour guide shared with us was so interesting! Would definitely recommend! Such a great experience!
Great food walking tour with Jade. Many tasty and filling bites and Jade provided great food history.
What a great way to see the Downtown area of Charleston! The history provided by our guide, Dena, was very interesting and relevant. And the food was fantastic! We especially loved the dishes we had at 82 Queen and Ruby Sunshine. We love doing food tours as it's a window into the local world as well as introduces us to foods and dishes we wouldn't ordinarily order for ourselves. What a great experience!
Our guide Faith was very knowledgeable in the history of the area and how it impacted the area’s traditional foods. The food samplings were pretty diverse, from SC oysters to pulled pork, and were all delicious!
