Itinerary
The Pirate Escape is best suited for those ages 10+. Guests will have free entrance to the oldest Fireproof building in the United States as part of the Scavenger Hunt to start the experience! From there guests will find as part of the tour several other historic locations and items to complete the "escape." This self-guided experience covers about a mile and a half of the most historic district in Charleston. This pirate themed scavenger hunt is centered around the very real Pirate Siege of Charles Town in 1718. As such you will need to find your way out of the city following the instructions on the packet provided. Finish the experience in the recommend time and you will have escaped a terrible fate as a pirate. Also find hidden alleys and objects along the way! Historical accuracy was paramount in the sites designated as part of the experience and packet instructions and information has been vetted by two local historians and the director of the Museum. As such the experience is great for children but due to the length and historic basis it is best received by those 10+ years old!

This adventure was fun and took us all over the historic district. I think we would have enjoyed more time to do the adventure, especially since some members of our group really wanted to take more photos along the way. We started at 1:45 and had to be back to the museum before 4 when they closed. We ended up with only a few minutes to spend at the museum after. That and the hot weather were the only downsides. The adults and our 12yo all loved it
We had a great time! Definitely agree with the over 10 crowd. We had two littles who loved the museum and lasted about an hour on the hunt. We knew this would be the case and planned on a condensed experience. It was a lot of fun and as a SC native who hasn’t lived in SC for many years, indes a few places I had never seen! Highly recommend.
My husband and I had a great time with the Pirate Escape scavenger hunt. We learned a lot about historic Charleston and the scavenger hunt staff kept in contact with is through text as we did the hunt, even sending pirate jokes!! It was a great guided way to explore the area with purpose.
It was wonderful. Rain and all, saw a lot of Charleston that we would have missed. The only bad part was we stopped at a bar and grill and the kids got several bug bites.
Excellent interactive way to see parts of the city you may not have ventured to on your own. Our 10 year olds loved it!
It is hard and takes a lot of time. I had trouble matching the directions with the questions. Perhaps a narrative explaining the relationship between the narration and the questions will help. It may be that I was too distracted with 2 grandchildren to concentrate. It was fun when the narration and questions aligned.
We had a fun time walking around Charleston looking for the clues and answering the questions posed by the hunt managers. We “escaped” just in time (with 3 minutes to spare!). This was a great family activity.
This was a fun and budget friendly way to learn some of Charleston's history and explore the historic downtown area as a family. The kids (ages 9 and 12) loved it and the walking distance was doable, even if you have younger kids. They loved coming up with pirate names for the whole family.
This was an awesome experience. A great way to explore downtown Charleston on your own timeframe and get lots of information and history. We got some great photos and fun responses from our pirate guides. Be sure to pick your pirate names and bring your pirate energy with you! We had so much fun.
Fun walk around the French quarters of Charleston while learning a little bit of history along the way. Beautiful sights and architecture.
We had such a fun time. It’s a great way to learn about some of the history of Charleston.
Thanks! That was fun. We got to see more of the city and it kept the kids motivated to keep going. Recommended
Great instructions, never felt lost. Walked about 2 miles total. Make sure you know North, South, East and West! Kids enjoyed the story and getting to see the city!
My husband is a history buff and despite not having a lot of reviews yet we decided to give this a shot. You receive a packet at the museum and use that to “escape.” Txting the phone number updates along the way was cool and they send back some funny jokes. Down with the king! We both really enjoyed it and it led us to so many hidden gems around Charleston and gave a lot of history on the American Revolution. It took us a little under 2 hours so bring your walking shoes! Also take advantage of the free museum you get as part of this . 10/10 we are going to try their pirate escape next visit.
It’s not really for children if you are not a history lover . If you are on a time schedule don’t do it .
We had fun scavenging around town learning about the history of the city, just make sure you have on comfy shoes for all the walking!
This was great! Our first scavenger hunt of this kind, was easy and fun for our family and gave us a great little tour of the city! Would definitely recommend’
Lots of fun for all ages ! Gave you a pretty tour of downtown as well! Great for kids to navigate with the clues! Highly recommend
Fun adventure. Lots of walking, the kids stayed engaged. Not sure why you would need to pay for each person in the group. This should be a group rate.
It's a nice walk and you see some cool parts of the city. Read all the directing as you go, dont skip to far ahead though!
Our son loves pirates and this was our first visit to Charleston. We got to see a lot and the weather was perfect. We had no trouble following the clues. Didn’t get a sticker though. 🤷🏼♀️
We booked this on our drive to Charleston and it was well worth it! My family (Me, my wife, and two daughters, 8 and 11) enjoyed the experience and it was a great way to see the city without the complaints. The free museum was very interesting but probably not best for younger kids. My older daughter wore Converse and complained so I recommended comfy shoes. Note: the area in the main photos of the prison was closed but we did go on a weekday. Overall this was an amazing experience and I would highly recommend!
We booked this scavenger hunt on a whim, and it was well worth it. The activity is essentially a self-guided tour of South Charleston with an interactive twist, including answering trivia. You’ll do tons of walking, so wear comfortable shoes. Totally recommend.
This was a fun experience for you family of four. You get to see parts of the old town, but with a twist. Being able to visit places made famous during the days of pirates with the added story of trying to find clues and escape the pirate hunters adds to the charm of walking through the city. Would recommend to history fans and scavenger hunters!
We have taken one of this companies other tours and while had friends visiting from out of town decided to do the pirate escape scavenger hunt. It was nice to have a museum included in the admission (we explored it more after the scavenger hunt). The escape takes you to several famous and also off the track sites downtown with a ton of history thrown in. While our group didn’t escape “in time”, we still had an amazing time on the way! For a self guided adventure it was easy to follow. Can’t wait to try the other one its supposed to be more difficult! Thanks Pirate Escape !
Captain Sabrina did a great job of keeping the kids (a total of 6 kids from 3 families, ranging from toddler to 5th grade) entertained. She passed out maps and swords, and taught them fun facts about each item as they worked their way through the picture locations in the park. She also gave good directions ahead of time, which was appreciated due to road closures. Great fun!
This was another wonderful experience with Native Charleston Tours. This is an interactive tour, where we were looking for clues and reporting back via text to our "guide" that made sure we were on the right track. We provided photos in some cases in order to move on in certain cases. We started at the Powder Magazine for the first clue and our clipboard of instructions/clues. We had so much fun; it was like an outdoor Escape Room. Please be sure when you're done to take the time to visit the Magazine museum; we especially loved the mockup of "Old Charleston" city. The museum folks are very knowledgeable and spent a lot of time with us. We heard rumors that another different scavenger hunt is being developed. Can't wait!
We came to Charleston with our four young children, so this was the perfect tour for us. It was a great way to see the city and experience the history in a way that suited our children! We had fun looking for all the historical facts and taking photos along the way! We highly recommend this for families.
It was so much fun learning the history and stories of landmarks. Be ready to walk A LOT! But worth it!
My wife and I did the self guided pirate escape while in Charleston and loved it. We felt it was a more than fair value and in particular found the Powder Magazine to be really interesting. We learned a lot about historical Charleston and took some cool photos along the way. 300 year old homes, secret alleyways, and pirate history along the way. 5/5 would recommend! They said a new one is coming out soon and we will definitely try that when back in town.
Fun way to see some of the amazing history and beautiful architecture of Charleston! Messages were humorous and encouraging!
This was a great family adventure tour. The clues help you navigate around Charleston’s historic district plus learn its history. A bonus was that you text photos of you finds along the way to the tour company so it helps you to document tour trip as well, which I loved. I highly recommend this tour.
Great fun walking tour of old Charleston hunting for items listed on guide. This was a family excursion including three generations. The tour took us about 1 1/2 hours but we stopped a couple of places along the way. The tour was a little under four miles. Recommend
I wish we had received a certificate or sticker to advertise we completed the tasks. An acknowledgement would have been nice.
Very well thought out scavenger hunt with numerous historical examples and details. Our family really enjoyed this outdoor activity in beautiful Charleston!
Fantastic experience. Interactive & fun, would highly recommend. Wouldn't hesitate to go on another one of Captain Bryan's tours (even though he's got Dad Jokes!)

The Powder Magazine is full of interesting history and my kids had fun playing some of the games. Though we were unable to finish the Scavenger Hunt Scavenger, the parts we did were fun and interesting. I was especially impressed with how supportive and accessible the organizers are. They made the experience more enjoyable.
Tour was fun and you learn history along the way. Beautiful streets that you don't see on most other tours.
My hubby and I loved our walking tour of Charleston guided by this clever pirate-history-themed scavenger hunt! What a great way to see things around the city we would've totally passed by otherwise. We loved the history and the way the hunt wove some playfulness into our walk!
Loved the scavenger hunt. It is a fun way to explore and learn about Charleston and its history. I highly recommend this activity!!
This was our favorite excursion in Charleston! We weren’t sure what to expect, but my husband and I both love history and learning about the places we visit. We’ve been here before, but this scavenger hunt took us to places in Charleston we never would have found on our own. We did a city tour two days prior, and, while good, this was pure fun. I highly recommend for anyone-kids would love this, as would couples, and other groups. Can’t speak highly enough about this experience!
Awesome way to get some exercise and learn about historic Charleston with the kids. We divided in to two teams and made it a race.
Definitely a fun way to wander around historic downtown Charleston. I definitely would not have seen as much walking around on my own without the scavenger hunt to lead me all around the interesting spots, so it was definitely worth it.
The scavenger hunt brought us to streets and places we never would have never probably wandered to. I think we would have liked maybe a tour guide with us or someone from the pirate scavenger hunt to meet us and maybe explain a little bit more as to what was expected.
Good history, self guided walk through French quarter, which pointed out things that you would have walked right by without noticing.
My husband and I booked a ghost tour with Adam (which was 10/10….he is amazing). It was the first time we had done anything like this. We decided to try the Pirate Escape because the ghost tour was so good, and we had the BEST time! We picked our packet up from the powder museum, Adam and Bryan had everything so nicely laid out and easy to follow. The scavenger hunt took us on the most beautiful tour of Charleston and allowed us to see places that we would have never seen before! We laughed so much, and had the best time together doing this! For the price it is BEYOND worth it! Please give this a shot, you won’t regret it! Thanks Adam & Bryan! You guys are awesome!
What a fun and interactive tour with a great game twist! It was educational and engaging and really felt like we were going back in time with all of the cool historical easter eggs we would not have found just walking around on our own! It was such an affordable enjoyable way to explore Charleston on our own while still feeling like we got a professional tour! Will be telling all of my friends and family to try this out when they visit!
A really, really fun self guided tour - especially if you love pirates like we do!!! The instructions were easy to follow, and we got to see a really good amount of the city along the way. Fun and fascinating true facts about the city and its history with pirates. Also an affordable tour that you can easily fit into your schedule whenever time is available. It even included our admission to the Powder magazine museum. I highly recommend this adventure! Aaaargh!
