Itinerary
Meet your certified tour guide at Palmetto Carriage Works (AKA the Big Red Barn), the starting point for your horse-drawn carriage tour. Enjoy a brief 15-minute orientation and look at our barn before embarking on your journey through historic Charleston.
Our Big Red Barn is conveniently located just off the Charleston City Market. Here, you’ll meet your certified tour guide before departing on your hour-long horse-drawn carriage ride. Your carriage will pass through the city gate at the market, where your guide will assign a unique tour route. Experience approximately 30 blocks of the historic district, showcasing stunning architecture, beautiful churches, gardens, and more. The tour concludes back at the Big Red Barn.
As you enjoy your carriage ride, you’ll pass by the renowned St. Philip’s Church, the oldest congregation in the U.S. south of Virginia. Located just off the market on Church Street, this beautiful landmark is a must-see on your Charleston carriage tour.
Your route also includes a pass by the iconic U.S. Custom House in Charleston, S.C. Construction began in 1852 but was halted due to South Carolina's potential secession from the Union. The building was finally completed in 1879, adding to Charleston's rich history.

It was a nice tour. Our driver Looney was very funny. Kinda like on the jungle cruise but a land and historical. The horse was a very good driver. The sites were nice. Just a bit strange and a downfall is how you get your route so I think some routes may be better than others at least when I spoke to friends their route sounded better.
Fox and O’Brien were excellent tour guides. Lots of information and a wonderful pa e to see the sights. Highly recommend this company along with Fox and his stories. :-)
This was a GREAT tour with WONDERFUL information about Charleston! Our tour guide, Loony, was hilarious and highly entertaining! We would recommend this to ALL!!!
We signed up for a group tour however it turned into a private tour. Our tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. It was very interesting and informative. Highly recommend.
Fun activity. Good way to see rge sights and learn some history about the city. Great tour kind and lovely horse, Charlie!😊
Wonderful time. Our guide, Robin, was very knowledgeable about the city and our horse. Really enjoyed it!
Brian, the guide was amazing - so knowledgeable. We have been on other tours, and we learned a lot more today. He was very entertaining as well. Also, Charlie, the horse was perfect!
Really enjoyed the carriage tour. Our guide was excellent and gave our group lots of information. The horses are beautiful and well taken care of which is always a concern. The tour is rather expensive but I still think it is a must do.
Austin was our driver and Clint the horse was the real star of the show! It was a fantastic tour of the beautiful city! Austin was so knowledgeable and funny! When we asked him questions he knew so much about the history of Charleston! A must tour to take and ask for Austin !!
I had a carriage ride with America. The driver Looney was absolutely wonderful.
We have done this tour many times and we bring our friends when they come to the Charleston area. Jayson was by far the best tour guide and had stitches the entire time.
Bill, our driver was so pleasant & knowledgeable! Excellent tour, learned so much! Bezos, was the perfect even tempered horse. Bill & Bezos are an excellent team!
I have been on multiple tours and as a horse owner I appreciate how the company and city work together. Even the locals we passed were friendly and waving. And I can’t leave without mentioning our guide Looney! He was hilarious and also informative. Love this company and trust me if you gone once before it’s always worth it to go again. You never know which tour route you will get!!
Great tour. Loved it. Bezos is a wonderful horse and Briana made the experience a lovely one.
Michael and America were A-One. I recently sprained my ankle but I wanted a tour of Charleston. The carriage ride satisfied it all. While we rode through the streets of downtown Michael regaled us with stories of the Civil War, architecture, history of churches, fires and even ghosts.
Jim was a very informative tour guide, pleasant and friendly. The horse, miss mollay was great, Well worth the time.
Great tour! Our guide, Fox, was knowledgeable and personable! Very experienced and has great facts about many of the historical homes and churches we saw.
Best carriage ride around, Jim and O’Mally were fantastic. Great stories and history from our guide Jim and O’Mally was the best looking girl out in town. Don’t miss this.
Had a great time learning about Charleston and its history. Our driver “Looney” was smart, funny, and gave us a great and fascinating tour. Our horse “America” was steady and patient, and knew the way and just where to stop and let traffic through! Great experience!
If you are in Charleston you have to take the Palmetto Carriage Tour. No question. When you take the Palmetto Carriage Tour, your hostess has to be Robyn. No question If you’re riding with Bezos … you’ve struck gold ! Firstly we took the time to read about the care and treatment of the livestock. This was so very impressive. Please ensure you read it top to bottom. Secondly the admission was not a password nor a PIN but rather your name Easy peasy Robyn was the star of the show. What a sweetheart Full of facts and figures, delivered in a delightful manner, while driving a horse with a soft “Step Up” “Geeee” or “Faaaa”and all the while minding the world around her. What a performer Robyn is ! Palmetto Carriage can count themselves fortunate that they have such a captivating and talented storyteller without peer in Robyn She loves her job It’s abundantly clear No question On a closing note the entire carriage roared with laughter when she told her own story about her grandfather saying “At the 4 corners you can : Pay homage to God Pay your taxes Get Married and Get a Divorce” No other driver has that story No question Well done indeed Clare and Stephen Wasaga Beach, Ontario, Canada
Everything was very well done. The guide was very good.
Looney and Commander showed us a great time on our tour of Charelston. Looney was full of facts and was funny to boot. Commander was a great horse. We would definitely take the tour again! It was $50 per person, but well worth it for the hour tour.
Our carriage tour thru Charleston was a very pleasant experience thanks to a wonderful guide - Jeremy - and a horse - Admiral. Jeremys knowledge of the history of Charleston was extensive and his presentation with some humor thrown in made for a great time.
Robyn was just a fabulous guide taking us through the history of Charleston while maintaining complete control of the carriage and horse. I highly recommend this tour to help understand the city.
Very knowledgeable guide. We got to see places we would not have seen on our own.
Evan was the most outstanding tour guide, knowledge galore, animated expression, passion, spontaneous humor and a love for Charleston that was contagious and irrepressible. Every moment was jam packed full of historical, architectural and intimate details every horse step. It was like being on a page turning adventure in the comfort and safety of a nostalgic horse drawn carriage in the most enchanting and pampering town, Charleston.
I love Charleston, lived in S.C. my whole life, but this was my first tour..It was amazing and so fun. Fox and O'brien were the best, he kept us laughing and entertained the whole time, I would definitely do it again...Thanks for the wonderful experience
This was a very interesting tour with historical information and interesting facts about the area. Our excellent guide Bronson also provided information about the very special care of the beautiful horses. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour.
Evan and Dutch gave us a wonderful tour. Evan was very knowledgeable and entertaining! Thank you!
Elliott was our guide and he did a fantastic job... He was very informative, lighthearted and fun! Enjoyed visiting with the horses before and after tour. Would definitely do again and recommend.
Our Guide from Wyoming was excellent and the route we took gave us a perfect view and historical references of Charleston
We had a fantastic tour with Michael C. From the time we boarded the carriage, he was non stop with information regarding Charleston! It was a great way to see the city of Charleston and learn more about this beautiful town.
Our guide Robyn and our horse Bezos were wonderful! Besides seeing the City of Charleston by carriage, we learned how the company cares for their horses. They are well cared for which as horse lovers was important to our choice in carriage ride companies. Robyn was friendly and very knowledgeable about the sites and history of the city. Bezos is a very beautiful and unique horse. We lucked out getting a great guide, beautiful horse and beautiful day for a wonderful trip around the city!
Very interesting look at the neighborhoods of the historic district. Luke, our guide, and Clint, the horse, were a GREAT pair. Extremely enjoyable!
We got to see a different side of beautiful Charleston and discover things neither of us had ever seen before. Bronson made the experience both fun and informative, and Commander was an absolute sweetheart.
We had a great tour with Bill and Josh. Bill was very informative. We would highly recommend this tour!
Felt this was one of the best horse carriage tours in Charleston. You can tour the beautifully kept barn for no charge, the horses are very well loved and taken care of and our guide Brian (and Josh the horse) were knowledgeable and interesting. Highly recommend.
Easy access to stables. Our tour guild Alan S was fantastic!! Unfortunately I can’t remember our horses name but he was a good, strong boy at age 17. Being in the open carriage was so much nicer than being in an enclosed bus tour. We saw a lot and Alan was very knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend.
A perfect intro to Charleston! Our guide Allen was terrific, the whole staff was lovely and Boeing the horse was a perfect ride. It should not be missed!
Loved Brian and Josh. Loved the history lessons
Evan and Bosch were incredible tour guides!!! Informative and interesting!
Our guide Sydney and our horse Commander made this an amazing tour! Very knowledgeable and entertaining. The carriage was comfortable and stable. Large group size didn’t matter. Just the right amount of time. The company runs different routes by lottery. Every tour could be different. Would do this again!
Eliot and Admiral were a fun duo! Eliot was very knowledgeable about our route through Charleston! We enjoyed our trip!
Very educational, great tour guide. We learned a lot about Charleston and it's history. Well worth the money
Michael C was fantastic! He was funny and did an amazing job showing us some of Charleston's oldest homes. He said he grew up there and his affection for his hometown was evident. What a worthwhile experience. Highly recommend!
A fun and educational way to see parts of Charleston . Colton was friendly, knowledgeable and entertaining. He was hard to hear and understand at times. Loved the tour!
Michael C. was a great guide, such a fun experience and learned so many great secrets of Charleston
Micheal C was our tour guide. Very knowledgeable and was a joy to be around. Even suggested a great restaurant.
