Extremely interesting. Larry not only tells the stories of the women. He also provides the cultural history of Charleston that created these strong personalities. The walk is at a comfortable pace. However, there is no place for sitting along the way for those with very weak legs or knees. It is a very memorable experience.

It’s hard to imagine how much history there is in a small geographical area. Small! The women were a huge part of American history.
Larry was very knowledgeable and his stories were informative. He tended to ramble and the tour should have been 1 1/2 hours instead of the 2:15 it was. Be warned, his appearance is off-putting and if gigantic beards are not your thing, this is not the tour guide for your. He also smelled of alcohol, but he also repeatedly referred to Charleston as a drinking city so that’s on brand for the territory.
Touring with Larry was like being with a master storyteller, enacting the time period in which the story was set. Learned so much about the often untold or overlooked history of women in the USA. Amazing that in just a few blocks of the city, so many women overcame obstacles and hardships to gain their rightful recognition in society. An insightful and educational tour through a historical part of the city, and in the company of a master storyteller!
We took several tours this weekend. This was our favorite of them all. Thank you for spotlighting much of the unwritten history of our country and this city. We really enjoyed it.
Larry was a great storyteller. He had good eye contact and kept us well engaged. He made you listen closely and "catch" the hidden tips. I really learned a lot. I would recommend this tour.
Knowledgeable? YES! Interesting? YES! Thoughtful of customer needs? YES! Entertaining? YES! If you enjoy history coming alive this tour is for you. The pace is slower, pausing (in the shade) so patrons can absorb the stories told by a masterful, insightful story teller. Unfortunately we discovered him on our final day in Charleston because we would have taken more of his tours. He is knowledgeable on many subjects and shares in laymen’s terms.
We liked hearing the stories. I'd appreciate the opportunity to give feedback about our guide Larry.
By providing an honest guide. We were deceived from start to finish. Even when exposed, the so called guide did not own up to fraudulent behavior. After a late arrival, this person who used the name Larry told us he had suffered a bike accident with a golf cart and was in too much pain to walk. We sat for a visit and coffee. He told stories with some herstory content. He also said he needed to leave to visit a doctor and get his bike fixed. We tipped generously, having fallen for his plight. We saw him minutes later, easily riding his undamaged bike . For shame! Such a hustler. All thar brother and sister talk he put out, and how much pain he was in. Should be dismissed.
This is a little different of a tour--not so much text book history and architecture but focuses on some little known women that had big impacts in the city. Tour guide was high energy and super informative. I found it to be very interesting!
Selected this tour because the reviews were phenomenal. Houses visited and stories shared were different than those from other tours, which was appreciated. Despite that, it was the least favorite tour of several. There is an agenda.
I decided late, the previous night, that since my friends on our Charleston trip would be sleeping in, that I would go solo on this tour. It was a wonderful decision. Not only was the tour guide (and, other attendees) super welcoming, but the history was ridiculously fun to learn. The guide even made time for a water break — as some of us needed refreshment. I can not recommend this tour enough. I also might add that it’s not solely history from a female perspective. I feel like my husband would have also enjoyed the tour quite a bit. All and all — this tour was one of the highlights of my Charleston trip.
Our tour guide was amazing. His knowledge and delivery of the story was exceptional! The pace was perfect! I would recommend this tour to anyone who is considering it.
The stories that Larry shared. Loved hearing the women's history. Larry made the history come alive.
This was the most engaging and informative tour I have ever experienced. Larry is a thoughtful and compassionate soul, and he transports you into the perspectives of centuries of Charleston’s women. He takes millennia of historic stereotypes of demographic groups, throws them in the trash, and remolds history as it should be told, inclusive of all people who were in it and their wits, intellect, and passion. I wish this tour were 10 hours long because there are endless stories to be told.
Larry, was extremely personable, knowledgeable, and so friendly. I cannot recommend holy city tours strongly enough. He was professional and gave a really good look into the life of women including people of color in early Charleston. He is one excellent story teller and I wouldn’t miss a chance to walk and learn from him again.
The best storyteller! We throughly enjoyed our time. So much history threaded through his stories! I hope to learn more.
This was fantastic. I learned things I had never heard about. Larry has such a great personality. We are still talking about everything we learned 3 days later. You will be walking and standing for 2 hours ( flat service) wear comfy shoes, bring water and get ready for a good lesson. This guide was so enthusiastic and entertaining and considerate. He has a stop to get water and one to use the restroom. He positions you in the shade when he can. Worth every minute.
This was our favorite tour- the guide was so informative and enthusiastic, the information was fascinating. Highly recommend.
Great tour! Tour guide very knowledgeable, he shared tons of history! It’s obvious he loves Charleston and it’s history! I learned so much!
Larry is a knowledgeable and entertaining storyteller who taught us so many interesting things about Charleston!
Larry was one of the most informative, passionate, & highly entertaining tour guides we have ever had! You have to take this tour! He makes the buildings & streets come alive & you are transported back to a different time! He kept my 10 year old hanging on his ever word. We loved it!
My boyfriend and I had the pleasure of attending this tour last week-- and we both loved it! Larry is witty and a treasure trove of information. I was amazed throughout the tour at the non-assuming buildings that I would've ignored had Larry not invited us into their stories. We learned about so many women -- from America's first serial killer, to Ben Franklin's business partner, to enslaved women who changed the face of Charleston. These stories, and the HUGE amount of context, will genuinely change how you see the city.
Larry was an excellent enthusiastic, entertaining and informative guide on this tour around the Harleston Village area of Charleston. So many interesting stories! I had expected to hear about the Grimke Sisters, but there were so many interesting women in the area we walked that we didn't need to hear of them. I would recommend this tour to anyone who has an interest in the forming of Charleston and/or women's history.
My family group of 5 had a great time on this walking tour of historical spots where women shaped our country and our culture. Our ages ranged from 17 to 70, and there was something for all of us. Larry, the guide really knew his stuff, plus he had a very entertaining delivery and was glad for any questions or interruptions. AND he was good at pulling over to the shade when the heat got too intense. It hit 100 degrees during our afternoon tour, but it was worth it. We saw some amazing parts of Charleston that I didn't know about, even after decades of visiting. The tour was my idea and I got big gratitude from all four of my guests. Enjoy!
I live in Charleston so I’ve been on a few of these but nothing comes close to the experience Larry provides. My cousin was in town this week from Texas so I reached out to Larry about the Strong Women tour for her and my wife. He hit it out of the park with this one. The tour was filled with incredibly interesting facts and stories all told with a passion and energy that really brought the whole thing to life and made you feel like you were there! Anyway, I can’t recommend this or any tour with Larry enough. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
It was a blazing hot day, but Larry's energy could not be squelched! We walked around Charleston for 2 hours and he held me captivated with stories of the incredible women that helped build Charleston and America to what we know it today. I spent my remaining time in Charleston continually telling family members (and total strangers) about all the interesting things I learned on this tour. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who is interested in learning about people who history may not have recognized for their incredible contributions and achievements.
Wonderful stories about "lesser known" women of Charleston. It was HOT summer day and Larry really looked out for us with the style of tour he led.
Larry was a great tour guide with a great knowledge about Charleston, SC. He was able to tell us a lot about the women that help to make Charleston the town that it is.
