Barbra from Slovakia was a great guide and we got a fantastic experience with 4-5km glacier hike with crampons and saw 4 ice-caves. October is still inbetween and only part of the ICE had the strong blue color of full winter but still very interesting and beautiful.
Our tour guide was very knowledgeable, friendly, funny, attentive and safety oriented. He made sure we had the right equipment and walking technique to manage the glacier hike efficiently. He let us explore the caves at our own pace and asked questions along the way to help us really reflect on the incredible natural phenomena we were experiencing. We got so much out of going on this tour.
We had an incredible experience with Barbara on this ice cave and glacier exploration journey. She was very positive, knowledgeable, and professional. She let us know everything we needed to know. It was an intermediate difficulty tour and the landscape was like heaven, but a cold one ;) We paid around 240€ per person, it is definitely not cheap but it was well worth it. It took 5 hours including the equipment wearing and driving with their off road truck to the glacier start point. We enjoyed it a lot, totally recommend it and our special thanks to our guide Barbara!!!
The tour was terrific! The ice caves were unbelievable, and we were very lucky to have such sunny weather. Our guides, Barbara and Alejandro, were both very professional and friendly. Barbara explained how to use the crampons properly, how to enter the caves safely, and shared interesting facts about glaciers. Alejandro took some lovely pictures of the group. The only downside was that we had booked a tour for six people, but the group ended up being twice as large, with twelve people and two guides. As a result, the caves felt a little crowded. Nevertheless, it was a beautiful and unforgettable experience!
Barbara was the best your guide ever, she drove us and guide us through the glacier. Tour was early in the morning but so good to avoid the crowds. I would repeat with the tour operator, just an amazing experience
Overall, the experience was fine, but unfortunately it didn’t live up to what was advertised or expected. We chose this tour because the Tripadvisor listing clearly states a maximum group size of 8, but our group had 15 people. When we raised this, we were told that the policy was actually a maximum of 8 guests per guide. We later saw that the tour operator’s own website describes this policy differently from Tripadvisor. While our group may therefore have been consistent with the operator’s policy, it was not consistent with the Tripadvisor listing we booked through, and the advertised small group size was an important reason we chose this particular tour. The larger group had a significant impact on the experience. It took a long time to get everyone outfitted and ready at the start, and throughout the tour we had to wait for the entire group to explore each glacial feature and take their photos before moving on. As a result, the pace was quite slow, and we weren’t able to visit as many glacial features as we would have liked. We were out for about five and a half hours (with only around three hours of hiking), but only covered around 3.2 kilometers of actual glacier walking, rather than the 5–6 kilometers described in the tour listing and reiterated by our guide at the start. That said, our guide Alejandro was friendly and clearly wanted everyone to have a good experience. He was also an amazing photographer and took some fantastic pictures of us, which we really appreciated. Overall, we were disappointed with the group size, slow pace, and limited amount we were able to explore. We specifically booked a longer tour because we wanted a small-group experience and the opportunity to see more of the glacier, and unfortunately that wasn’t the experience we had. If you’re considering this tour, I’d recommend confirming the actual total group size beforehand, especially if having a small group and covering more of the glacier are important to you.
We had a fantastic experience with Ice Explorer! Our guide was professional, knowledgeable, and very easy to talk to, with a great sense of humour. We learned so much about the glacier and the Jökulsárlón area, and the explanations made the experience even more interesting. What we especially appreciated was our guide’s patience and willingness to help. Our crampons came loose a few times because we hadn’t secured them tightly enough, and our guide always waited patiently while we adjusted them or stepped in to help. That level of care and attention really stood out. The route was very well planned, and the whole experience was thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. Highly recommended!
It is really a awesome tour, so amazing blue ice cave
Highly recommend this experience, one of my highlights on my trip to Iceland! The guides were so knowledgable about glaciers and ice caves. Getting to see them in real life was jaw dropping. We got very clear instructions on how to wear the crampons which helped a lot on the ice and are easy to walk in. We felt very safe and even got professional photos taken of us with no extra charge!
We enjoyed this tour with our two children while traveling in Iceland and it was an absolute highlight! Meet-up at Glacier Lagoon was very easy and our guide (Guillermo) explained the process to us every step of the way so we knew what to expect. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the glacier and history of the area and took time to answer all of our questions. He was even super kind to our 10 year old who is a chatterbox and had all sorts of questions (beyond glacier-related topics). The tour definitely requires a decent degree of fitness, stamina, and ability to follow instructions to stay safe on the ice. Thank you so much Guillermo and Ice Explorers - we had the best time!
We had an amazing time in the Glacier, it was wonderful experience big thank to our tour guide Mr. Valantino. He help us understand more about the Glacier and the history of the place.
Loved this experience. Guillermo, our guide for the day, did an amazing job helping us understand how the glacier was evolving, and the impact those changes have on the surroundings. It was a little over 2 miles, or just over 3km of hiking. Not too strenuous, as our group had a 10 year old in it, who did great.
Really nice guide. Laid back experience. Cool ice cave. Beautiful views.
Outstanding experience from the get go, even in the inclement weather. We had Angelique (Angel) as our guide and she was fantastic — knowledgeable, helpful, engaging with stories and instruction. Important point we learned: Not all guide companies are required to be licensed. But because we were hiking on part of a national park, it is required. That was reassuring.
Valentin and Flos were excellent guides. We felt safe and had a great time. The cave was filled with beautiful blues and amazing formations.
Fantastic experience! Our two guides were outstanding — personable, safety‑conscious and genuinely attentive to each person’s comfort throughout the tour. They made the glacier walk and ice cave feel both exciting and completely manageable. The pacing was ideal for mixed fitness levels, with plenty of time to enjoy the scenery without feeling rushed. A perfect way to experience Vatnajökull and learn about glaciers and ice caves in general.
Excellent tour of hiking the glacier (about a mile or so). Beautiful ice cave, guides offered to take photos and gave us plenty of time and space. Would recommend!
The tour was amazing and the guides were very knowledgeable. Not a "walking" tour, this is a strenous activity. The cave views and being able to say you hiked the glacier at the end of the day are worth it. Small group tour, only about 10 people on ours. Laid back but safety and experience focused. Best for athletic/in-shape persons with no/few limitations.
This trip was amazing! Our guide, Valetin (sorry for my likely misspelling), was very knowledgeable and engaging. Our kids (8 &11) had a great time exploring and say they would absolutely go again. Just be sure you dress properly, we left my daughter’s coat at the Airbnb, but thankfully they had rain slickers to rent. I hope we make it back to do this again on a future trip.
Our tour with Ice Explorers was EXCELLENT. Both our guides (I can't remember their names, but they were Spanish and Argentinian) were very friendly, knowledgeable, and experienced. Our group got to see so much over the course of about the 5.5 hour tour including an incredible ice cave and multiple crevasses in the glacier.
We had a wonderful experience on or tour to the glacier and ice caves of Vatnajökull. A special thanks to our tour guide, Gudrun (Maria), who was super friendly, flexible and service minded. She made the excursion feel safe and fun, with possibilities for good conversations along the way. We definitly recommend Ice Explorers :).
We had a great time - largely due to our guides, Paz & Valentin, who were amazing with helping us with photos and putting on crampons (several times). We couldn't have asked for a better experience.
Wonderful experience Thanks to the super guide Javier we explored the glacier in every part on the top and inside the caves and canyons. We really enjoyed and had an amazing day that we will not forget
Small company, big cars, great guides!!
The tour was nice to see the glacier and get to know some information about the glaciers and nature of Iceland. Barbara was well informed and an enthousiastic tour guide. You do get to walk on the edge of the glacier, but not too far, which makes it very approachable for any fitness condition. If you can walk, you can do this tour. You get the ice spikes so just wear sturdy shoes.
Javier was amazing today! His happy energy and great knowledge made the tour truly special. He’s super friendly, easy to hear, and shares his passion along with lots of interesting extra information about Vatnajökull. Come and go with him to take the best photos and chill in the ice caves. Thanks for the unforgettable experience!
This tour was by far the best part of our trip to Iceland. The glacier was amazing! It was so much fun to spend several hours observing different structures (caves, holes, crevices, etc.). Everyone in my family loved it (two teens and two middle-aged adults)! Valentin and Barbara were both great guides - showing us lots of interesting things and keeping everyone safe. They also helped everyone take amazing family photos with the gorgeous blue background. Finally, communication was fantastic before the trip with timely email responses to questions. Highly recommend!
Epic experience! Guides were friendly, super knowledgeable, and always made sure we were safe. Views were awesome! Def recommend!
We had an amazing time! Visited two different caves and had an amazing experience - well organized and great guide! highly recommend
We did the Glacier and Ice Cave tour with Ice Explorers, and it was such an amazing experience! Our guides, Evan and Guillermo, were fantastic and super friendly, knowledgeable, and always making sure everyone felt safe and comfortable. The group had about 11 people, and they gave us all the safety gear, including helmets, crampons, and even harnesses (though we didn’t need to use them). The glacier hike was tougher than I expected, but totally worth it once we reached the ice cave. The different tones of blue inside were absolutely stunning, and the scenery all around was breathtaking. Evan and Guillermo explained everything clearly and were really attentive to anyone who needed a little extra help along the way. Overall, it was an unforgettable adventure, I’d 100% recommend Ice Explorers and these two guides!
I had an amazing time with my sister while doing this glacier hike. Our guide, Javier, was incredibly informative, quirky, and a joy to be around. He made sure our whole group was safe and secure while guiding us across the ice. He had an extensive background in mountaineering and it showed when he set up a guided rope down into an ice crevice for us to walk inside. It was also a nice bonus to be able to speak Spanish with him, while being far from home. For the time we spent, the views, and the unique experience I’d say the tour is worth it!
Guillermo was amazing. Clear explanations, very knowledgeable and fun person. Enjoyed learning about glaciers and seeing once in a lifetime sites.
Amazing tour with our guide Susanna. She shared her knowledge with us, which was really interesting and took great photos on top!! Would definitely recommend booking a tour with her.
Ice Explorers Jokusarlon’s Glacier Hike W/Inge? (Gal from Poland). She was a superb guide. From driving us out in the largest van/bus we’ve ever been in to hiking on gravel to the glacier ice, She kept a keen eye as most of us were novices. We were in a group of 10. Inge was very informative and being petite, was so strong. Apparently we had just missed the ice caves as the weather must be extremely cold, latest in April? We were already early May. Inge did find a small entrance to an ice formation which we could “rope in” for safety as she guided us. My hubby & I were told this was a 3-3.5 hr hike when we signed up from our hotel. Not! It was 5-5.5 hours! With the kindness of Inge’s motto “we don’t leave anyone behind”, we were very fortunate and thankful to have Inge and our fellow hikers. This is a MUST tour; we’d go back in a heartbeat with Inge/Ice Explorers! Thank you for adding wonderful memories to our book of life adventures! Susie & Ravi
Amazing trip! Views were spectacular and the ice cave was so special. Highly recommended to everyone. Our guides Justine and Evan were amazing.
While exploring the glacier of Vatnajökull you'll quickly come to realize why people refer to Iceland as the land of ice and fire. The volcanic ashes mix in smoothly with the snow and ice of the glacier, creating a grayish hue on top of the mountain. However, underneath you can find a wealth of both pitch black and bright blue, clear ice. The caves where you find it are unlike anything you've ever seen. Great tour guides as well (thanks again, Iga!). This is not just a recommendation. This is an absolute must when you're travelling the Ring Road.
We went with Jesse and Javier and it was an incredible experience. We got lucky and we went to two caves instead of one and they were both incredibly gorgeous.
This is a fascinating tour. The guide Guillermo is professional and kindness. Thanks for the guide we can see excellent sceneries.
Amazing views and a great guide! Jesse was super friendly and helpful, I felt very safe. Loved the ice cave but the glacier walk was absolutely incredible! What a feeling having those crampons on haha!
We had a great time hiking the glacier and exploring the ice caves. We were a bit apprehensive learning how to use crampons for the first time and using them to go down the glacier but our guides Flor and Guillermo were great teachers! We even got to walk on a glacier ledge by ourselves to see down a giant crevice! That was pretty cool!
A unique once in a lifetime experience. Special thanks to our guide Guillermo who was very knowledgeable and managed our group really well!
It was amazing, thank you so much for this wonderful experience. 😁👍✨👌 We learned a lot about the creation and environment of the glacier. 🤗
Absolutely worth it. Javier took us to all kinds of creative places and mulans and always gave great suggestions for funny but also brilliant photos. Loved the day spent here.
Guille was very knowledgeable and shared lots of interesting facts. He made the whole experience very enjoyable. Even shared his top tips to get the best photos.
Our guide Javier was incredible. Any questions asked about the glacier, formation of glacier and volcanos were answered in depth with additional info about the area provided. We felt incredibly safe whilst in the ice caves as safety equipment was provided. There is a short walk to the ice caves which may require some level of fitness however the group went at a steady pace allowing to take in the surroundings and get pictures. Tour was fantastic and would recommend to anyone visiting Iceland specifically with Ice Explorers
A fully enjoyable, and unique day out on the Glacier. The Super Jeep was a fun way to get to the Glacier. Tour guide, Jessie had great knowledge of the glacier and was an excellent guide throughout the whole day. Every 15 minutes of walking we found a different ice attraction to take photos of and to see the Glacier and how it forms and changes over time. Would definitely recommend this package as my partner and I definitely felt we got very unique and lasting memories for this Glacier Hike! Thanks Again. Bryan and Éadaoin
We took the 3 hr easy hike to the ice cave. It was great, Guillermo our guide was fantastic. Very informative and personable. He even took the extra time to help this old guy with the bum leg 😃
I recently had the opportunity to go on this tour in late November 2024, and it was truly unforgettable. From start to finish, the experience was expertly managed by the team (Evan, Anya, and our wonderful photographer Iga!) who were not only professional but also incredibly knowledgeable about the glacier. The ice cave itself was a mesmerizing world of blue and crystal-clear ice, with a surreal beauty that’s hard to put into words. The hike was equally stunning, with breathtaking views of the glacier and surrounding landscapes. Safety was a top priority, and we were well-equipped with proper gear for our activities. If you’re looking for an adventure that combines stunning natural beauty, expert guidance, and an unforgettable experience, I highly recommend this tour. It was definitely one of the highlights of my trip to Iceland!
This tour was incredible and our tour guide was incredibly informative and made the experience much more fun. The small tour group size really made the experience unique.
