Located just south of Siem Reap (about 10–15 minutes by tuk‑tuk or 20–30 minutes by bike), Wat Thmei is one of several sites in Cambodia known as "Killing Fields" from the Khmer Rouge e
From 1975 to 1979, Wat Thmei—a Buddhist pagoda—was repurposed as a Khmer Rouge prison and execution site. Prisoners were brought in, coerced into false confessions, and tragically executed and buried nearby in mass graves and wells.
It’s estimated that around 8,000 innocent Cambodians—including intellectuals, former officials, and farmers—died here during the regime’s brutal rule.

We felt that it was important to learn about Cambodia’s history and what its people have been through. Next, we went to the APOPO Hero Rat center, where we learned about how the rats sniff out land mines, and got to interact with one of the rats. Then we stopped at a temple, which wasn’t on our agenda but was very beautiful. After that, we went to Artisans Angkor, where we saw various artisans at work and shopped their finished goods. Finally, we went to the War Museum, where we saw artifacts from the Cambodian civil war.

My partner and I really enjoyed this experience. The visit was interesting and different from the usual tourist activities, and we loved learning about the HeroRATs and the important work they do. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable, and made the whole experience fun and easy to understand. The driver was also punctual, polite, and made us feel comfortable throughout the trip.
