Itinerary
At the GS (GuidingSicily) infopoint in Piazza Duomo you will meet one of us, all authorized guides with official licenses. Together we will go to the discovery of Catania, a city teeming with life and full of sounds, colors and smells, eager to discover itself in the prying gaze of the curious traveler. Let's start right from the DUOMO, Norman in origin and baroque in appearance, an imposing building that in a few decades celebrates its first thousand years of history. On this same square there is also Palazzo degli Elefanti, our Town Hall, and the fountain with the symbol of the city, the liotru, an elephant in lava stone surmounted by an obelisk. If you have chosen the morning walking tour we will certainly not miss the adjacent historic fish market, where not only the freshest fish is exhibited, but you will find typical cold cuts and cheeses of the region, as well as fruit at literally bargain prices.
The Palazzo degli Elefanti is our Town Hall and is so called because of the representations of the majestic mammal in the gables of the balconies on the noble floor.
Adjacent to Piazza Duomo is the fish market, a market held every day, where you can buy a wide range of local food products: from fish to meat, from cured meats to cheeses, from fruit to vegetables ... do not lose!
The majestic Swabian castle that once overlooked the sea is now located in the historic center: in the 17th century a mighty lava flow filled the moat and surrounded it with its red-hot embrace. Impressive is the black basalt still perfectly visible today.
One church after another, one monastery after another ... the numerous baroque facades built after the devastating earthquake of 1693 overlook this street making it one of the most fascinating on the whole island.
The Palazzo del Rettorato, seat of the oldest university in Sicily (1434), encloses a delightful courtyard on whose lava pebbles tens and tens of generations of students have passed. In front of it stands the imposing Palazzo di San Giuliano, also a university seat, formerly the home of one of the most powerful and richest families in Sicily.

We thoroughly enjoyed our WalkingTour CATANIA – Discovering the City of Lava. Our guide was excellent: knowledgeable, experienced and wonderfully humorous, bringing the city’s fascinating history to life throughout the tour. A great historian, they provided valuable insights into Catania’s past, its distinctive architecture and the many sights we might otherwise have walked past without fully appreciating their significance. The explanations helped us understand how the city’s identity has been shaped by its volcanic surroundings, particularly Mount Etna, and its remarkable history. The guide struck just the right balance between informative historical detail and an engaging, entertaining presentation, making the tour both enjoyable and educational. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Catania who wants to look beyond the surface and gain a deeper appreciation of this fascinating Sicilian city. A great introduction, particularly for first-time visitors!
Our guide was wonderful - very enthusiastic, informative and entertaining. We had 'whisper' ear pieces which worked brilliantly so we could hear her all the time no matter where we were standing.
Informative and interesting walking tour in old historic part of the city. Lots of good recommendations for further exploring and eating.
Highly recommend this tour. Our guide was wonderful as she walked us around the historical part of Catania giving us great insight to the multi-layered history of the city both from a ecological and cultural perspective. Understanding more about Catania really enhanced the rest of our vacation time in the area.
Very informative tour and Allegra took great pride in showing off Catania to us. We would not have seen the hidden gems on our own - very glad we took the tour
The tour was very informational! It was also well paced. Totally my fault, but I thought we would also be visiting the inside of buildings we were walking around to see and hear about it, but we didn't. Again, probably my fault. Our tour guide (Mary Louise) was very informative and very engaging.
This was a very insightful and full of information tour. It was a bit too much information in such a short time I would say. Emanuela was really nice in covering all our questions. I recommend it for the pletora od information!
Great walking tour on first day helped us get our bearings in the city and see some of the main attractions and learn the history. Guide Anna Maria was great.
Our guide, Ester, was very interesting and knowledgeable! The tour was two hours, and full of super interesting information. The guide made frequent stops in the shade, so we did not overheat. A wonderful tour for a great value; would definitely recommend!
Great walking tour. Very informative. Fantastic guide. Great value for money
Pleasant enough guide who shared very good information about the history of the city and the buildings and locations that he shared with the group. The tour did exactly what we required; a better understanding of Catania and its culture
Interesting and informative tour with a good guide.
Esther our guide was really lovely and knowledgeable, however, she is very softly spoken and a lot of what she told us was missed, which was a shame. It was not helped by the fact that there were road works taking place nearby, trolleys of supplies being transported across cobblestones, mopeds driving by.. it's quite a noisy city! I would recommend she uses a microphone! I also would have preferred to walk a little further as I feel very few steps were taken. Also, it would be helpful if in the booking info it was mentioned that the exact meeting point in the square is in the corner near a certain shop, or to look out for a blue flag in the corner. This detail was missing from the booking and just helps others find the guide and be on time. All in all, enjoyable.
Enzo delivered an experienced tour of the city of Catania. His knowledge and delivery of the material left us highly entertained. This is a good tour to learn about both Catania and Sicily.
Excellent walking tour of Catania. Our guide, Mateo, was knowledgeable and friendly. Great way to be introduced to Catania and Sicily!
Our guide was fantastic, so knowledgeable and engaging. We learnt so much about this incredible city. A fantastic experience
It wasn’t very thorough. It didn’t go to the places me mentioned such as the fish market or the Duomo which was very disappointing. It also said it was 2-3 hours and it was less than 2 hours. I would not bother with this one.
Probably the best £20 I spent while on holiday. Guide was knowledgeable and passionate about Catania and Sicily. I'd highly recommend this short guide anyday.
Mille grazia to guide Ester for very interesting story about lava city, it's history, inhabitants and life.
Very personable guide, pleasant tour with not too many people. His insights and historical knowledge helped greatly in giving perception to Catania history
Excellent tour by a native Neopolese. Very fun and informative. I would recommend it to my friends.
Catania is very old and has a very complex history. In about two and a half hours Mateo managed to condense a lot of information in a pleasant way interspersed with some personal anecdotes as someone who was actually raised and educated here. One of the best tours I’ve been on.
I liked how our leader talked into a microphone and we all had ear pieces to hear her. We saw lots of the city, but I felt we should have gone down to see the theater area. We spent too much time in the fish market. Wish we could have gone into the Cathedral or the university. Could have been included in this tour.
Lots of walking but mostly flat. Covers all the main sites in the city centre. Our guide was excellent
As an introductory tour of Catania this was a good way to start our vacation to the area. Our guide gave us an overview of the history of Sicily and Catania, which was helpful during our trip to understand the multicultural origins. We learned a lot on the tour.
Lady was very knowledgeable, very engaging and entertaining
A decent tour and the tour guide was very knowledgeable but a couple of issues, it’s a long walk about a mile to get to your start point from cruise ship. Also the tour does focus a lot on religious sites and does not have any breaks to shop or go to bathroom.
The tour guide had a way of bringing history to life with engaging stories of people and the time. She was very helpful to us personally with suggestions we needed. We would highly recommend her.
She has an amazing command of the history of not only Catania but also of Sicily and a great sense of humour. It became particularly interesting as we encountered sites and events. A memorable tour.
I enjoyed this tour. Learned a lot of interesting facts from our guide Ester about the history of the city within a short period of time, she was even showing old pictures of the places we visited. I would pretty much recommend this tour to everyone.
We had an incredibly interesting tour of Catania. Our guide was Sandro (?) who is a professor at University of Catania and he had so many fascinating details of his “home city.” He had a backpack full of additional maps and photos to help explain his points.
Was extremely impressed with our guide. She knew how to deliver a good story, make you feel like you were part of the history, made it very interesting and her delivery was not only exceptional but she knew the art of including the audience. I can say this is probably the best walking tour I have ever experienced.
Over 60 people and one guide. Lost most of what she said as the group was so large we kept losing reception as we moving as a large group meant big distances. The guide was great the tour operator is running a scam, trying to get as many people in one group to get as much money as possible.
Titianna was a great guide . Very educational experience . True feeling for the Sicilian lifestyle. Foods are natural, and the people make good use of natures bounty. Including lava which is used and repurposed very well from making buildings that stand for lifetimes to ornamental objects.
Great way to start a trip to Catania for first timers. Works well if you arrive early to your hotel without being able to check in.
Our guide was so knowledgeable about the history of Catania and she made it fascinating to listen to! I learned so much about this city the first day I arrived so it was very helpful.
Our tour guide, Esandro, was a gifted professional, with a Geograpy qualification and a sound knowledge of geology, and local history, which made his explanations of this city, where lava has played such a significant part, so interesting.
The tour was fascinating. Local tour guide that was very passionate and gave a in depth history to Catania as well as talking about the current outlook.
Excellent tour, very entertaining and educational. I found the pace good, not too rushed or too slow and a good balance.
Our guide was excellent, very knowledgeable, friendly. It was just the right amount of time. Components of the walk were excellent! I would recommend this to get an enjoyable ntroduction to the city.
The walking tour was wonderful. The guide had been a college professor. His knowledge of the area, customs, and historical significance was outstanding.
Canceled my tour 1 hour before it was supposed to start. Now I have nothing planned for the morning and won't be able to book any other activities during this time slot. Other tours had the decency to cancel at least a few days in advance.
Excellent informative tour by a very engaging and charming guide. She explained in detail the Feast of St. Agatha , which just happened to be taking place during our visit
Our driver/guide was terrific. Very knowledgeable and informative, a safe driver. The sights on Mt. Etna were awesome- not to be missed. Be sure to dress warmly as it gets very cold and windy up there.
Our guide , Christina, struck a good mix between weighty factual historical information and personal anecdotes etc. I was pleased with the quality of this tour.
This was the worst walking tour I've ever taken. I left the tour part way through and it is a total waste of money. Half the tour consisted of standing in one spot and getting a history lesson.
Maria was an excellent guide. The whisper guides made it easy to hear and follow the guide. Group was a little large but not too unwieldy.
We arrived early to make sure we could find the meeting point. It was difficult and we had to ask multiple people where to go. It was not well signed which needs to be addressed. Our guide was very good and knowledgeable however the headsets were hard to hear. Otherwise it was a great tour.
Titiana was our OUTSTANDING guide! Fluent in English, spoke clearly, fine knowledge of history & so proud of her native city. Gave us more than 2 hours, managed our small group skillfully. Petite but strong! Bravo Titiana!
