The church, located in the historical center of the city of Messina, was built in byzantine times, probably on the remains of a pre-existing pagan temple.
Built between 1930-1933, the Bell tower's mechanism is the major attraction of the historical center of the city: each day at noon offers a unique show to all those that are stopping to admire it.

Wonderful experience. Our guide was fantastic and super patient. Our pizza making guide was great. Overall a great experience and would definitely recommend.
We are a family of 8 who were totally engaged with the preparation of creating our own pizzas from scratch. The guide, Andrea' was awesome, especially with his interactions with our 5 children. As our dough was resting, we walked over to the Bell Tower for it's hourly display and received its history from Andrea'. We enjoyed our creations in the restaurant that warmly hosted us. Our 6 year old's pizza was shaped into a Minnie Mouse, which delighted her. After the filling lunch with drinks, we were escorted to the cannoli shop for desserts. I chose an alternate dessert of gelato, which was exceptionally decadent. Andrea' also suggested stores for products we were looking to purchase. Everything on this excursion was a perfect 10; we all loved this tour!
Our tour was wonderful and our guide was even more so. He was very accommodating and knowable. He even stayed with my small group a little longer than expected to help us navigate the city some more. Would absolutely recommend Discover Messina Sicily!
Great experience. I loved the city tour. Pizza couldn’t be beat.
Marina was exceptional! She share so much history about the Messina clock tower and the area. Our pizza making was fun! Chef Fabio was patient and friendly and the final product was delicious!! Highly recommended!!
Our guide Lillo showed walked us around town to and from the class. He was very knowledgeable and informative of the history and surroundings. It was a blast.
Emanuela was a great tour guide. She brought us to great spots and the Pizza and Connoli’s were delicious. Food was so fresh and hit the spot. Thanks for a great time. Our kids truly enjoyed the experience as well. Highly recommend this trip.
This tour was in Taormina where we learned to make pizza and pasta at the Ristorante Porta Messina. Chef Antonio and his team were wonderful. We ate the pizza and pasta that we made and it was awesome! Discover Messina Sicily was our tour company that picked us up from the Sun Princess in Messina, Sicily. Our tour guide was Lillo who was knowledgeable, friendly, and accommodating. I give him 5 stars. The cost of the tour was reasonable and the length was 2-1/2 hours. Atmosphere was very pleasant! I give this tour 5 stars.
Lilly our guide was wonderful. Explaining culture on the bus ride. He had photos on his phone, but, printed, laminated photos that can be passed around would be best. He was a warm, fun, and considerate guide. I was with a friend who was afraid she wouldn't have the stamina to walk back to where our van would be waiting. He had the van get as close to the restaurant as possible. He walked us down to be sure all went well, and then walked with the rest of our group while we waited in the air conditioned van. We first learned to do pasta and had a break with delicious appetizers. Then we learned to make pizza dough. We all had so much fun. There were ten of us. We put our toppings on and in 15 minutes we all were sitting down to eat our own pizza. They then brought out the pasta we made in a red sauce with eggplant. Lillo was right along with us and had a great repore with Antonio our chef and teacher at Restorante Porta Messina. A couple of us went into the kitchen to take a photo of the huge pots of tomatoes cooking up for sauce. Walking to Taormina in the morning before the crowds was beautiful. I highly recommend this experience. There was another group making connolo (cannoli). I'm glad my friend chose pasta. Not a fan usually. The one they gave was actually quite good. The aprons were ours to keep, along with there certificate they had with our names on them.
We had the best day in Messina! Pickup right off the ship was flawless, and our guide was the best. We took the short walk to the restaurant where we had a private lesson in pizza dough making and while it rose, we got to explore the city a bit. She was informative, fun and so personable. Then, we went back and finished our pies…since we couldn’t bring food back, we stuffed ourselves with the best pizza I’ve ever had. On top of that, we had a small dessert and visited a cute shop with local artisanal gifts, wine etc. I’m so glad I took a chance on Messina instead of following the hoards to Taormina…it was the highlight thus far.
AMAZING!! AMAZING!!! Emanuela was excellent!
Emi was a fantastic guide for our day! Meeting off of the cruise ship was smooth and seamless! The day had a perfect balance of food, learning and fun! I would recommend this activity to everyone!
What an incredible experience! The pizza-making class was so much fun, and we loved meeting our cooking instructors, Giovanni and Fabio — both were fantastic and made the class so enjoyable. We also loved tasting local specialties, including Cannoli, Granita, Mount Etna wine, and Birra dello Stretto, while learning about their history and significance in Sicilian culture. A special thank you to our guide Andreas, who was absolutely incredible — so kind, knowledgeable, and even an excellent photographer! His explanation of the famous Astronomical Clock of Messina was fascinating, and seeing it in person was truly breathtaking. Highly recommend this tour!
We loved the pizza making excursion. We had a blast! Andrea was amazing, he guided each step of the way. More to pizza making than you may think. The clock tour was great and Andrea gave us the history and highlights. He was a great guide and could not have been nicer. Our pizza was the best we had in all of Italy. What a great time! Thanks Again!
