We recently went on a private tour of the Cusa Caves and the Selinunte Archaeological Park, and the experience was a tale of two very different sites. The Cusa Caves were, unfortunately, underwhelming. There was very little information available on the site, making it difficult to really understand its history or significance. Aside from a couple of abandoned stone pieces, there wasn’t much to capture our attention, and the lack of context left the visit feeling incomplete. Selinunte, on the other hand, was absolutely spectacular. The archaeological park is full of wonders, with well-preserved ruins, clear signage, and breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Walking through the temples and ruins felt immersive and informative, offering a real sense of the area’s ancient past. The beautiful scenery only added to the experience, making it a highlight of the trip. Our driver, Giuseppe, truly elevated the entire day. His knowledge of the area and insightful tips made the journey smooth and enjoyable. He was friendly and professional, and his commentary really helped bring the sites to life, even when the caves themselves fell short. Overall, while the Cusa Caves were disappointing, the Selinunte Archaeological Park more than made up for it, and Giuseppe’s excellent guidance made the tour worthwhile.

Itinerary
In the vast territory of the Selinunte Archaeological Park we can identify seven distinct areas, each of which preserves memories of the greatness of the ancient city. About thirteen kilometers north-west of the Selinunte Archaeological Park, lies the archaeological area of the Cave di Cusa. The quarries were an inexhaustible mine of raw material, essential for the construction of the city of Selinunte, including temples. These are the most famous ancient quarries in the world. A remote show that transports you back in time. The quarries were in fact suddenly abandoned due to the war against the Carthaginians (allies of the Elymians of Segesta and Erice), who, taking the city of Selinunte by surprise, completely destroyed it. This is one of the peculiar characteristics of the place where the enormous rocks intended for the temples still lie, half excavated. The extraction technique was long and complex.
Selinunte is undoubtedly among the most fascinating and famous archaeological sites in Sicily. Positioned on the western coast, between Mazara del Vallo and Sciacca, the archaeological site of Selinunte constitutes an exciting example of Greek civilization in Sicily. The archaeological park is considered the largest and most impressive in Europe, it extends for 270 hectares and includes numerous temples, sanctuaries, altars and more. Along the fascinating journey through ancient history you can delight yourself with a refreshing Sicilian granita made with seasonal fruit. The site is divided into seven areas distributed along a well-defined route. The area can be visited on foot but is quite large. Once inside you can rent electric cars from private individuals or buy a ticket for the train tour (about 6 euros). We recommend purchasing tickets with the shuttle included, online, to avoid long waits.

Stunning temple site with plenty to clamber around. Wear tennis shoes! Allow a little time for a beer at the cafe. Great at sunset.
We visited as part of a tour group .We had a local guide . The lady was really interesting, very easy to listen to , we had audio headsets , so she walked as she talked , she found shade if she wanted to stop the group too. Lots to see , lots of history. A very interesting visit .
For the benefit of other travelers, I must clarify that the private driver is not bilingual. He spoke a mixture of roughly 97% Italian and 3% English. Communication was very challenging. He dropped us off at the Cave parking area, pointed in a direction, and said ticket. We were the only people there. Signage was space at best. The two workers at the ticket building spoke only Italian (appropriately). They pointed us to a dirt road into nothingness. At this point already, the trip was such a bust that all we could do is stop in our tracks and bend over laughing. Our driver then took us to the archaeological park, opened our car doors onto the sidewalk at the entrance, and said See You in 3 Hour. The first 25 minutes there were spent in line for tickets. The whole experience was ridiculous. I highly recommend other travelers avoid it.
I think the archaeological park of Selinunte is one of the most beautiful things we have seen in all of Sicily. Extremely suggestive and really well cared for. I suggest to buy the ticket including the transport by train because it is quite a long walk on foot
I was in the area and decided to visit this park; honestly, I expected a little bit more, too many empty "spaces" outside, and I found the museum very minimalist. Perhaps a little more information for those who do not choose a guide would be appreciated; we are in 2026 and creating a virtual tour that would help to have more details and extra information wouldn't hurt. Obviously, the temples are very fascinating!
Very interesting visit. Shuttle in an electric cart to go from one valley to another for an additional fee.
Selinunte is not simply an archaeological park, but a real sensory experience. Walking among the imposing ruins of Doric temples, with the roar of the sea in the background and the scent of wild herbs, gives a magical and timeless atmosphere. The majesty of Temple E, rebuilt in anastylosis, literally leaves you breathless by its proportions. Also very interesting is the museum set up inside the Baglio Florio, where the numerous finds found during excavations are carefully kept, fundamental to understand the daily life of the ancient colony. To reach the Acropolis there is a convenient shuttle service for a fee, ideal to cover the wide distances of the site. Continuing even further, you reach the area of the sanctuary of Malophoros, a suggestive place located higher up. It is a visit that leaves deep emotions for anyone who appreciates the charm of history.
Nice family experience: the visit was enjoyed by both me and my wife and my children, it was also fun because we did the whole tour renting bikes and following the audio guides included. Doing it by bike the ride was also not tiring compared to doing it all on foot. Improved management of admissions and online bookings.
The Archaeological Park of Selinunte, located on the southwestern coast of Sicily, is one of the largest and most fascinating archaeological sites in the Mediterranean. Walking among its ruins means immersing yourself in a journey back in time of over 2,500 years, when Selinunte was a powerful Greek colony, strategically placed between sea and plain. The park is extensive and well-organized, with paths winding through Doric temples, acropolises, necropolises and remains of the ancient walls. The atmosphere is made unique by the intense light of Sicily and the scent of the sea that crashes not far away, creating a suggestive combination of history and nature.
Beautiful landscapes the sight. a step into the past. Staff very friendly and helpful
In the Province of Trapani, in Castelvetrano, there is the splendid archaeological site of ancient Selinunte. The temple you meet first is dedicated to Athena, majestic and still well preserved. You can admire column after column, capital after capital. It is difficult to remain indifferent, especially when you think of how many centuries have passed and, although time has not been forgiving due to the carelessness of previous centuries, you can not fail to appreciate and admire these unique, rare and incredible masterpieces. The park is huge. Moving up the hill to visit the Acropolis you can see the sea as a backdrop or frame, unique in its kind. The route is easy but, for those who have difficulty in locomotion, or simply for the lazy, there is the possibility to move from one temple to another with the golf cart and a train, which however was not yet active in April. And last but not least, inside the park you can admire the splendid Baglio dei Florio, inside which there is a small but interesting museum.
Wonderful archaeological park an2 steps from the sea with remains of temples necropolis and beautiful acropolis. You can visit on foot, renting bicycles or with the internal shuttle service. I recommend spending at least half a day at the visit given the breadth.
I am not a fan of archaeological parks but the skill, competence, friendliness of Guide (Dr. Davide) involved me and made me feel a unique emotion
Wonderful place, walking among these archaeological finds I highly Recommendation. There are two points not to be missed, the first temple you see and the one overlooking the sea. Undoubtedly it tries to understand why they managed to create these wonders with the means they possessed at the time. You can make the visit with a Guide, on your own with self-guide to understand each structure and also rent bicycles. If you are too tired in front of the museum you will find a sort of train that will take you to the temple overlooking the sea and when you wish to return to your car a trennino of bright colors will leave you in the exit. Experience to do absolutely
A sincere thanks to the Archaeological Park of Selinunte At the end of my visit to the magnificent Archaeological Park of Selinunte, I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to the staff, reception service and ticketing staff. My applause goes out to all of you for the exceptional care and attention you show every day. Care of decorum and exemplary cleanliness It is absolutely not obvious that an archaeological park of such importance and vastness maintains such a high level of decorum and cleanliness. I could appreciate the impeccable cleanliness of every corner of the park, from the paths to the rest areas, to the bathrooms, always neat and well maintained. I found no brush, cigarette butts or papers on the floor: everything is taken care of in every detail. Welcome with a smile The smile of the staff is something that particularly impressed me. Every member of staff, from the reception to the caretakers, conveys a sense of joy and passion for their work, making the visitor experience even more enjoyable. It is a pleasure to be able to say that the Archaeological Park of Selinunte travels beyond the limits of temporality and physicality of time, approaching with great strides towards a perfection that we often imagine only in areas very far from us. An example of excellence The management and maintenance of the Archaeological Park of Selinunte are an example of excellence and dedication. Thanks to your commitment, this place not only preserves its priceless historical heritage, but also offers a comfortable and serene visiting experience, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the beauty and history of ancient Selinunte. Conclusion I want to thank once again all the park staff for their amazing work. Your dedication and professionalism make the Archaeological Park of Selinunte a unique place, where past and present meet in perfect harmony. Keep it up, and know that your efforts are deeply appreciated by all those lucky enough to visit this wonderful site. Thank you very much.
