This was a wonderful tour at the perfect time of day—5pm—for a spectacular sunset. . The tour begins in the museum where you’ll get the history of the salt ponds and is followed by a walk through the ponds with explanation of the process. It’s experiential and ideal for the kiddos too. The hard part for us was that we were traveling without a car and the only option from Trapani to get there is a €25 taxi (each way!).

Itinerary
In the first part of the tour you will have the opportunity to take a relaxing walk, discovering the infinite shades of white that characterize the salt, not to mention the blue of the sea, the gray clay and the pink of the tanks. This route follows the perimeter of the salt pan until it reaches the banks of the salt pans where the water acts as a mirror to the sky. Through this tour, the Culcasi salt pans offer an experience suitable for all age groups within the WWF reserve, among protected plants and birds, so you can see the salt that forms in the tanks by collecting it with your hands and following step by step the entire process that transforms sea water into salt that everyone knows.
The second part of the tour focuses on the guided tour of the salt museum and the ancient mill from the 1400s, where you can really get involved in the history of salt, retracing not only the tiring work of the salt pan, but above all, the history of the family who have run it for generations. The museum is located inside an ancient baglio and is included in the official guide of the European Union. It is a strong testimony of the union that has always linked salt and sea.

This is very informative. Wonderful to see how the process works and the combination of seeing the salt pans and seeing the museum was great!
Very educational experience on history of salt flats. The tour guide was friendly and provided an appropriate amount of information
Nice way to learn how sea salt has been made in the Trapani area for centuries. Naomi was a great tour guide although her English is limited. There’s also anther experience where you can actually walk on the salt pan for an extra cost. The museum was very interesting because it has devices that were used on the salt making process in the past.
This was a nice and relaxing tour, a 40 minute drive from Marsala with a lot of history, hands on experiences and tastings. We arrived early and were accommodated to start the tour inside the museum instead of outside. A member of our group wasn’t feeling well and Agnes offered something to eat to help. The museum tour was very informative with pictures, tools and equipment used back in the day. Explanations of the process were explained thoroughly. Once completed, the tour continued outside near the different salt pans. An enclosed room outside “salt lab” allowed for touching and sampling the salt and body scrub products. Afterwards, you take an approximate 20 minute walk around the salt pans where information that was previously explained is shown in person. At the end of the tour, you’re able to stop at the restaurant on site and have a nice lunch with beautiful views. Highly recommended with highly knowledgeable staff.
A nice interesting different experience. Out of the way and off the beaten path but educational and a nice experience to see where my salt can come from. Also maybe a jar or 2 found there way into a suit case!!
Well done. Love that the granddaughter was our tour guide.
Very interesting! Museum and walk was well worth it. I would go at another time of year to see the salt pads.
This was a unique experience and we totally enjoyed ourselves and learned so much about something we had no knowledge of
We were given the history of the salt pans, then taken for tastings and tour. The guide was very good with excellent English language skills. These salt pans are the furthest from Trapani so no problem if you have a car, it cost us €30 each way in a taxi. There are salt pans closer to the city. It would have been wonderful to visit at sunset
We learned so much about salt production and how the business has thrived over many generations. Tour guides were excellent.
We enjoyed the salt pan tour, our guide was enthusiastic and interesting! My one complaint is that we did not realize it was a 15 minute drive from downtown Trapani. We paid an additional €60 round-trip to get back-and-forth to the salt pans.
Very interesting & informative. Excellent guides & helpful to change tours when we booked in Italian guide language by mistake.
Really interesting guided tour of the museum and salt pans along with a small tasting. The guides were very knowledgeable and explained everything well.
We really enjoyed learning about the salt making process and found our guide to be very informed and friendly. Very good value for what you get and a nice break from beach activities.
Great little place! We learned so much about harvesting salt. The tour guide was very informative and showed us all the traditional tools of the trade. We also enjoyed walking around the salt flats. Great views!
Really interesting few hours learning about the history of salt production, its connection to wealth, and sustainability. This location is family owned and run and if you time it right, you can still catch the family producing salt in August and September. Tours are available in multiple languages, Sara was knowledgeable and friendly (and even pointed us to a few great restaurants for our visit).
Very fun experience! The Guides were very informative and entertaining. Would recommend this tour to anyone!
Great experience, learned a lot about the history and process of salt manufacturing on the region of Trapani
The grandchildren of the founder guided us to visit the museum and the basins for the production of salt. The museum displays the old tools and gives an idea of the hard working conditions of the past. Walking along the basins one can observe the different colours of water depending on salt concentration, which increases up to the point that allows salt harvesting. A charming, instructive experience.
It was very interesting and cool to learn about this process. We got to see all of the steps of production, try some salt, and tour a museum which was very interesting.
The tour through the various salt lakes and the use of the Archimedes screw was particularly interesting.
Our guide was very informative and made the tour very interesting, her English was very good as was the guide in the Museum
Surprisingly interesting and great value! Great tour of the site really interesting. Great to see the windmill and the gearing and how they produce the salt. For a family business great tour and products at reasonable prices. Great views late in the afternoon. Would recommend to any.
We feel that this was a sort of sham. Apparently there is no way to get to that location as there is no public transportation at all from Trapani. No transportation was organised or offered (we would have paid extra if needed or asked). Absolute rip off. Unless you have a car don't book this trip!
We booked the only available time, at 6 pm and italian...but we dont speak any italian! Staff were bussy but so awesome, you can really tell they enjoy what they do, they were so accomodating we thoroughly enjoyed the visit
We had a great experience at the salt pans. Very informative and hands on. Great tour guides! And we even bought some salt to take home.
The tour of the salt pans was great. The history and cultivation of salt is a fascinating subject and our guide was informative and interesting. The Salt Museum was also worth the tour, seeing machines for grinding and milling that had been in use for 600 years, amazing!
There were just 4 of us on this tour of the Trapani Salt Pans and our guide explained everything in English, then in Italian. She was easy to understand and the tour was very interesting. The Salt Pan portion of the tour was very good. The museum part of the tour was only average as there were many more people and it was difficult to hear what the second guide was saying.
We visited this museum on Tuesday, the 26th of September 2023. It was very interesting. The young lady who was our guide said she is the granddaughter of the owner. She was very friendly and knowledgeable, and provided a very interesting explanation of the history and process of salt, making at Trapani.it is well worth a visit and good value.
Beautiful setting and a lot of history on salt making. We did it in the morning but I recommend doing in at sunset and than dining at the adjacent restaurant. We even saw a couple of flamingos flying in the sky. Recommend
The visit to the Salt museum was amazing. The museum is very small, but the guides are fantastic and make the visit worth it. Do yourself a favour, and go and visit.
An experience that was not only beautiful, but also culturally interesting. YOU LEARN things about salt, about how salt is extracted from the sea, which is not something to be taken for granted, but is difficult and has historically involved many people.
A magical place and experience. Must be done at sunset. Beautiful, it is absolutely worth doing.
A very positive experience, thanks also to the prepared, attentive, and friendly staff. We visited the salt pans at sunset, and everything was perfect. I recommend booking the guided tour of the salt pans + salt museum.
If you want a cabaret show visit the museum Beautiful also the visit of the salt pans, you learn things that we do not imagine You will also understand what you buy when we call it salt
Very good guidance, top English and interesting.
It was a memorable tour, full of detailed and professional information, and full of kindness. The sunset view was so breathtaking that I don't regret the one-hour trip at all.
An interesting visit also thanks to the passion and expertise of the guides who accompanied us. They really made us feel the life flowing in the salt pans
Visit to the museum very very interesting, tasting and visit to the salt pans very effective. We did not expect such a picturesque light in a beautiful setting
Recommended tour with explanations and interesting anecdotes. Beautiful view at sunset. You can see that everything is handled with great care and passion. Congratulations!
Interesting visit to both the salt pan and the museum, the latter with historical illustration well guided by one of the owners.
Unique experience the visit to these salt pans that for me are much more suggestive than those of Trapani. Salt is still extracted manually here with effort and traditions that are handed down from father to son. In the guided tour (which I recommend ) everything is explained perfectly, if then as I did it before sunset you will see a unique spectacle with the sun setting between the tanks and or windmills.
Interesting experience, the guides were very good at explaining the process, without all this being heavy. Recommended
Really interesting and scenic. I highly recommend. Discovering a unique working process.
Fantastic experience to understand the whole salt processing process, well-prepared and engaging guides
Very friendly guides. We didn't find the location immediately, called them and got the location forwarded. The hour of the guide was then smoothly adjusted. The nice thing about this tour is that it is a family business with very Personal touch! Definitely recommended!
Really nice and interesting experience! I booked the visit from the site and it was a very pleasant choice among the activities to do in the Trapani area. The guides who accompanied us told the "life in the salt pan" in a professional, exhaustive and above all NOT boring. In outline a landscape nothing short of suggestive!!
Interesting museum about the salt extraction as it has been carried out there for more than a century. Clear tour.
Don't miss it! 2 girls / guides very prepared, accompanied us in the visit lasted much longer than indicated, explaining perfectly the history of the salt pans and all the steps that lead to have the product that is used daily in our tables. The museum perfectly preserves many tools used in the past in the salt pans. At sunset then you can witness a spectacle of nature that leaves you speechless, perhaps enjoying an excellent aperitif in the room adjacent to the salt pans.
