This excursion was one of the most memorable of my life. At the age of 74, I was able to walk across ancient lava paths and see old eruption sites. Our tour guide was excellent, friendly and knowledgeable about the history of Etna and the surrounding communities. He was glad to answer any questions and was respectful. Anyone traveling in Sicily should make this trip during their stay. Congratulations to Viator and to those responsible for choosing our much appreciated guide.

What a fabulous day out with Francesco as our guide and Vincenzo as our Vulcanologist. The weather was kind. No wind at the top and the cloud lifted just after we got there giving us perfect views of Etna. Light lunch was literally 3 courses and delicious. Lava cave interesting. Cannot recommend this highly enough.
My Etna is phenomenal a true once in a lifetime experience. That said do not go with this company is there a plethora of alternative options. At the last minute our southside trip including the cable car was canceled for a northside 4 x 4 trip. The van provided had nonworking seatbelts and drove at a harrowing 150 km/h. We were then charged the price in cash for the cable car despite the 4 x 4 experience costing less. Do not use this provider as there are many other options available.
Marco was great. Knowledgeable and safe. Had a great day exploring Etna and surrounding areas. Lunch was fulfilling. Views were amazing from Etna
Great experience on Mount Etna
We have had an excellent tour with Danilo. He was such a knowledgeable and attentive guide, also funny and speaks perfect English. We have learned a lot and, despite the weather (full of snow on the volcano and expected to snow, but it eventually did not). The set-up is excellent, you get some warm jackets and proper boots in case you did not bring your own. The switch between various modes of transport keeps the effort in balance, but you get to actually trek a bit outdoors; the balance was perfect for a snowy season. Maybe during milder weather, you would like to trek more. The views are stunning anyway. For lunch, do not expect a full-fledged one, it's street food from Catania (pizzete, other savory pastry), and a bottle of wine for the group to share. It was anyway, enough to refuel for the last part of the tour. There was a small misunderstanding at the end when we had to pay, but it was eventually sorted out, and we paid as per the advertisement.
Enthusiastic and well informed guide shared everything we wanted to know about Etna and Sicily. Some walking and exploring involved but not strenuous.
Highly recommend this trip. Picked up at 8.30 prompt and headed to base camp where we were able to get warm coats and shoes. Cable car was amazing, then in a truck where we drove further up the mountain to start the lava trek. Very very windy but not as cold as I expected. It was quite tiring but well worth the effort as the views and sheer scale of the landscape was spectacular. Then headed back down and went for a lovely picnic before going into a small larva cave and then getting dropped back off at the hotel. Tour guide was brilliant
We had a great day of hiking and learning with Marco on the Easy Top Etna tour. He was prompt, fluent in English, friendly, very knowledgeable about the volcano, botony, & history of the region. I felt that he had a good sense of the individuals in our group and made sure everyone was sarisfied. The lunch provided was delicious! Everything was coordinated smoothly and we got to experience the beauty and majesty of Mamma Etna with a local. Highly recommend!
If you are planning to visit Etna, I highly recommend you book a tour with Etna Experience. Our experience with them was fantastic, from the efficient and courteous team in reservations to our knowledgeable guide Marco who spoke perfect English. We did the full day "easy" tour, took the 4x4 bus, the cable car, had lunch and then visited the Silvestri craters and a cave. Marco shared so much incredible information with us about Etna, volcanos, and indigenous plants - in perfect English - and you could feel how much he really cares about his customers and this precious part of Sicily.
Etna Experiences was a terrific resource (we did a sailing trip with them as well). Our day went well above our expectations - literally! Our guide, Angelo, was punctual and patient at our pickup spot 2 blocks from our lodgings. We stopped to pick up hiking boots and poles, after he checked our shoes for adequate treads. Well-informed, he was able to share so much about the area, the volcano, the eruptions… The trip to our high destination involved a van, cable car, large ATV , and a hike. Easy it was not but within our capabilities (our group of 4 ranged from 32 to 73 yrs old) and definitely well worth it . Back to the base of the cable car, we hiked through a lava field up to the edge of a lateral crater, and learned about botany as well as seismic history. Finally, we had (provided by EE) delicious pasta and lovely wine, followed by great cannoli, at the Refugio Sapienza. It was a terrific day for all of us.
Great tour, just as described. Flavia was really helpful booking us in and answering questions and Andrea was our tour guide and he was really knowledgeable, interesting and funny. Lunch was amazing and plenty of wine!
One of the best guided tours I have done. Our tour guide was a really passionate volcanologist who gave us a lot of information about the volcano and the surrounding environment. The views were absolutely spectacular and we had a nice picnic with traditional Italian sandwiches at the end. Would highly recommend this if you want to visit Etna and learn more about it. The trek itself is not that difficult so anyone can access it.
We didn’t really know what to expect but we couldn’t have imagined a better guide. Danilo was very passionate, enthusiastic and easy-going, which made the entire day to a big success! The tour was interesting, exciting and sometimes even a little adventurous - a perfect combination. The excellent weather conditions were a great addition to this unforgettable experience.
Although our tour was restricted to the lower levels due to high winds, our guides extensive knowledge in both geology and biology (he was a young biologist), plus the excitement of climbing down into a lava tube (ladder also available for us 2 oldies!) Most impressed with the strong rapour the guide grew and maintained throughout the tour, that encouraged questions and discussions that resonated and continued within the group. Everyone came away with both a greater understanding of Etna's geology, flora & fauna, happy memories of a unique experience and great day out with fun like minded people!
Best experience ever… was very well organised from pick up to drop off. Lunch was great and the guide was very informative and lovely. Definitely worth doing .
Great trip! Our guide was fantastic, nice and very well informed. His English was perfect. He knows everything about Etna, summits, all stones and plants. It was one of the most interesting tour I ever been. Thank you🙂
Incredible experience, the Etna is an amazing place to visit. As said, it's an easy tour, we may I prefer more trekking time (the total walking time is about two hours, in two times). But the views were incredible from there, both of the Etna and the Sicily panorama. Our guide, Andrea, a young biologist, was very friendly and could answer all our questions about the Etna. Thanks again !
This trip was through Etna People from Taormina. It was our second trip with them and was as amazing as the first. Daniele was our guide this time. It was a small minibus trip with 8 people. We really appreciated Daniele's talk on the way to Etna. He told us about the history of Etna and it's various eruptions and the impact on the people living there (he grew up in an Etna village). The trip was very comprehensive. We first visited a lava tube so that Daniele could explain about types of Volcanoes, how the lava moved and the structures left behind. We then got into a monster truck for a drive all the way up to the observatory at the top (2950m). We saw craters from several old and more recent eruptions and could clearly see the steaming main crater at the top. Lots of great photo opportunities! As we progressed Daniele pointed out the different ages of lava flows and also described the hour by hour impact of the 2002 eruption and how it wiped out hotels and restaurants near the top. We had a delicious lunch at a local winery (vegans well catered for). We tried 2 wines plus almond wine with desert. We finished with a river walk at Alcantara gorge with its basalt columns (and 'refreshing' water). Another great day. Big thanks to Daniele and Etna People for making it special.
Thanks to our amazing guide Claudio, the experience was amazing ! Wonderful landscapes and food! We loved visiting the caves, going through the Etna withe the superb explanation of our great guide. Would strongly recommend the « Sunset » option, really worth every single euro
We did the etna and Taormina tour with wine tasting. Our guide Giovanni was excellent! Very knowledgable about Etna! He spoke 3 languages including English and French. The hike was not very difficult. The food at the vineyard was good. It gets windy and is cold on the tour but hiking boots and jackets were provided. Ask for Giovanni he was excellent!
We had a great tour this month, beautiful landscapes and views. Thanks to Janet, a very professional multi-language guide. A lot of knowledge and great stories during the walks.
So we went to visit Etna with Teresa Valvo as a guide. I must say, it was really interesting to see the volcano and it was very fun to have Teresa as a guide. She is a very kind hearted, cheerful and daring person. We were taught some Sicilian phrases and words and had a snowball war on Etna. Later we had a picnic, visited another crater and a cave with romantic story behind it. I’d like to point out, that it would be impossible to make that trip on your own in one day, so I do recommend to get help from Etna Experience. And in addition, ask for Teresa to add some extra fun to your trip ;)
It was perfect. The guide was extremely nice and very knowledgeable, and made sure my mother of 68 was able to see the top of the mountain as well. About the mountain - if you are in the area and able to, you must see it!
It was amazing day tour to Etna. My first volcano. Thanks to our guide Janet, who is friendly , it was wonderful day with beautiful views. She has excellent knowledge about Etna. The tour was prepared professional from beginning to end. From pick up from aligned place , organized equipment, though trip by cable car and bus, and lunch in beautiful place.
We had a wonderful day with Janet from Etna Top Easy. We were with a couple and their 2 children. We get the proof the trekking is achievable by everyone no matter your age. Janet was amazing, thanks to her we’ve discovered, learned and saw so much things about volcanos and she brought sicilian food to us for the lunch. We’re happy to taste them for the first time. Thanks again for this unforgettable day Janet !
Originally we planned on having the Summit Strong tour, unfortunately due to the current Vulcanic activity we weren't able to ascend that far (though that's nothing which Etna experience can influence) Despite that we had a really nice day, Janet knows literally everything about volcanoes, so hiking through the amazing landscape and getting to know all the information right on the spot was excellent. If I'd do it again, I would probably opt for skipping the (ludicrous expensive) cable car all together and focus more on the hike, which would then be very challenging but right trough the amazing landscape.
Wonderfull afternoon with sunset. Janet our guide gave us very good explanations on geology and vulcanology. Pick-up was done in a very professional way and we felt very welcome. Tour summary was wonderfull. Etna is a nice experience and the sunset place with diner that Janet gave us was very nice.
We went with a whole family with small children (one with broken leg). That was one of the most amazing experiences in our lives. Our guide, Janet, geologist, was a great company. She explained us all the details about volcano, its history and processes happening inside and she answered a million of children's questions with a big smile on her face. We really admired her deep knowledge and positive attitude. She adjusted a pace to our capabilities and she knew all those little special places around Etna and took us there. The trip was prepared perfectly, we booked and paid remotely without a need to go to the office. The communication was immediate and preparation of a tour was also great. We were equipped in any missing stuff, like shoes or jackets. But the best was Etna, of course. That day we were super lucky because we were able to see live eruption and lava thrown out from the crater.
We had an amazing day with our guide Jorga. He is very knowledgeable about volcanoes, passionate, and funny. He also shared some anecdotes about life in Sicily during our picnic lunch during which we tasted fantastic food. Spending the entire day on the volcano, and around, is really a great way of falling under its spell. It is a unique experience worth the price for the day.
Many thanks to pour guide Janet for this wonderful day! She's very knowledgeable and wants to share her passion, and above all she's very sympathetic and funny ! The organization was also perfect and the tour is easy indeed. We would strongly recommend this tour to anyone willing to discover Etna in a single day, since we discover its top, its flanks and its caves. Thanks again Janet ! Thomas and Manuela
Great tour, real fun group. Unfortunately, it snowed. This meant that we were not able to go all the way to the top. Nice pizza lunch after. The naturalistic walk en the cave were not that spectaculair. Great day after all and especially a fantastic guide, Sabine aka ‘Lady Etna’.
Life in Catania is dominated by Mt. Etna so when visiting a trip to the mountain is essential. There are numerous ways to visit the mountain it is huge! You can hike the slopes visit the lower lava fields or try for the top. Even though we visited in winter the first week of March we wanted to go as high as possible on the mountain. After some research we opted for a guided tour. There are numerous from Catania but we opted for Etna experience and we are glad we did. Things to remember, there are numerous levels to the mountain and the higher you go the higher the price. Make sure you know what you are purchasing. Remember, this is an active volcano and it is a substantial mountain so Mother Nature will ultimately decide how high you go. Also make sure you know what is included in your tour, is the cable car extra? is the 4x4 after the cable care an additional cost? One of the things we really liked was everything was upfront we didn't have to put our hands in our pockets including extra winter gear coats and boots if we needed them. We started off warm and dry in Catania and were picked up by Denise our wonderful guide. She was wonderful although its her job I am sure she would pay the company just to show off the mountain to visitors. We had a group of 5 for n English tour 2 from Canada and three from the Netherlands. The mountain is about a 45 minute drive and after numerous twists and turns we arrived part way up the mountain for a coffee stop and to pick up cold weather gear. By the time we arrived at the Cable Car it was snowing, because its winter there were no line ups. The cable cars are small 6 seaters and they take you up to 2500 meters in about 15 minutes. At this point it is several degrees colder and quite a bit windier. At this point we learnt that this was the highest we would go today. The guides in the 4x4's could have taken us higher but other than snow and thick cloud there was nothing to see. This was a disappointment but it was the ethical thing todo. So we wandered around at this level, it was not what we were hoping for but it was still a unique experience. Desolate wind swept, as many describe like the surface of the moon - but with snow. It was unlike anywhere I have ever been. After 45 minutes or so we made our way back to the Cable car terminus and as we had a beverage Denise took some time to explain and show us various aspects of the volcano. After 15-20 minutes the clouds cleared and we were treated to glorious blue skies. Out we all ran snapping pictures of Catania from 8,000 feet. At this point the trip to 2950 meters was back on. But alas as quickly as the skies cleared they closed again and our time was over. But our experience was far from over. Down the mountain for a fabulous lunch with Sicilian wine and lots of fresh made Pizza. After lunch we drove a little further down the mountain and walked (and walked) through the lava fields. This was way better than I ever imagined. We were still high enough on the mountain for glorious vistas but it was walking though landscape the likes of which I had never experienced. We drove back and were dropped off at our air BnB at 6:00pm after a simply wonderful day. Just a couple of extras Denise was a very smooth capable driver. I am not the most comfortable passenger on mountain roads, but I felt completely confident. Because we didn't go as high as we had planned we were all given a discount on our final bill. This trip will stay with us for a long while and we were more than glad we opted for the people at Etna experience.
We decided to attend MT. ETNA SUMMIT EASY TOUR. We talked to the Etna Experience office agents and we were advised that the weather conditions in the next days are not very promising andthe guide may decide to make some changes in the itinerary. Our guide picked us up from our hotel punctually and informed us that we were the only 2 attendants. During the drive we found out a lot about Catania, Sicily and Etna. We knew already that due to the heavy snow storm we might not be able to start our excursion. When we arrived to Rifugio Sapienza at 2100m the rain was pouring heavily but we still went out to change the jackets and the shoes which were provided by the Etna Experience free of charge. Our guide went to the cable car and took some pictures of the cameras located at 2500m - the visibility was zero, Etna covered with fog, rain and snow - we were unable to continue. Etna Experience offered us the full refund - 278€. After they left us at the hotel I realized that I’ve left my phone in the jacket which I changed at Rifugio Sapienza - 35km away from Catania. Although there were no other guides there, Etna Experience went above and beyond to help us and I had it back still the same day. This is the most trustworthy tour agency ever! We are absolutely sure that we will come back to finish our excursion and without any doubts we will choose Etna Experience!
The best part of our Sicily vacation was definitely visiting volcano Etna. We bought the `Etna experience excursioni di natura` in city of Catania where we stayed for 4 days.We went for all day trip to Etna by van and our driver as well as our guide was Giuseppe. He was an excellent guy! He was calm and professional, spoke distinct english and was also talented car driver! The traffic is much like chaotic in those hoods. We went by van as far as the funivia, cable car. After cable car we drove by unimogs up to about 2500 meters. Then we got an other guide who explained more about the craters and we walked on those craters up to 2900 meters. The Etna is and was active all the time and we saw how the steam of smoke came out of there now and then. The ground was warm. It was amazing. After that we went with Giuseppe to Zafferana and lava caves. Also visited a wine yard and did a picnic outside. Everything was perfect. The only minus is that it was a little bit too easy for us. There was not much hiking. This suits especially for older people and if you are not in so good shape. Etna experience had organised the tour well and Giuseppe was a very good guide, we recommend highly. -A couple from Finland-
We had a great tour (in English) on Mount Etna with Etna Experience. Having had a very similar tour with another tour operator in 2018, we can say that while Etna Experience was slightly more expensive, it was also much more professional, so should we decide to have another tour next year, it will definitely be with Etna Experience again :-)
We were all together 3 for Etna Top easy tour, car was comfortable, and Denise, our guide picked us up on time. From the first sight she was very friendly and nice. She told us everything from the history of Sicily, and the tradition and every detail of Etna. She speaks English perfectly (also German, French). We got special boots and jacket for hiking. Etna is amazing! After the tour, we had some delicious pizza and wine in a restaurant. Lava cave was also interesting. We enjoyed every minute of the tour. Thank you, Denise, you’re the best guide I’ve ever met! ☺️🤗
Today, me and my other half went on the Etna summit easy tour with Etna Experiences, which we booked at the last minute, yesterday. It was fabulous! Denise was our guide and she was superb. She was very knowledgeable about not only Etna, but Sicily (being native, she also gave us recommendations on where to eat, activities for our stay, etc) and its history. She spoke impeccable English and French (and knows German very well too) and her passion for all of the above shines through. She was very welcoming and inclusive and cared about our wellbeing and enjoyment of the tour throughout. We got dropped off later than planned (around 7 ish) but no mention of it being too late etc. Everyone on the tour with us seemed to have a great time too! It has been a highlight of our trip so far and I would like to say a bit thank you for making it so, Denise :) I'll definitely look into other tours with Etna Experiences because of our tour today with you.
I took the tour on May 30. At dawn a new eruption had started, in 2 new fissures. Our guide, Antonio (Tony), explained this to us in detail and told us we might not be able to reach the top on the funicular and 4x4. We got to the station and that was the case. We trekked around the old crsters and could hear the rumbling. He drove us to where we could see the "smoke". We were charged only for a half day trip because of the part we missed, but he gave us an extra and took us to see the 3000 yr-old chestnut tree. I really enjoyed his enthusiasm and clear explanations in very good English.
We went to the agency in Catania to book a one-day tour to the summit of Mount Etna. They recommended the "Top Easy" tour for 139 euro per person. We asked two questions: does it go to the very top of Etna and is it easy enough for a 3-month pregnant woman? Both questions were clearly answered yes. However, that "Top Easy" tour did not go to the summit and was not easy at all! The brochure is not very clear as it describes it as "the right tour to reach, with no effort, the summit area of Europe's highest volcano". The term "summit area" is misleading and the agency clearly confirmed us that we would go to the top. Instead, we stayed at the base of the crater. The pictures for that tour on the agency's website also show the summit, therefore it is very misleading, and the people at the agency play on tourists' expectation to go there and sell them an expensive package that does not match this expectation. The other couple with whom we travelled on the tour had the same experience. One advice: if you want to see the summit, ask for a guide directly at the bottom of the cable car (85 euros all included). For the afternoon part of the programme, the brochure talks about "a naturalistic walk". What we had was rather a mountain trek! We went for a vert long hike of more than 4 hours through very difficult and steep paths going up and down. None of our co-travellers expected that. We would not have chosen this package if we had been given a clear description of the difficulty of that "naturalistic walk'. Or at least we would have worn different cloths (a lot of hitching vegetation) and brought more water (the guide only brought 1 liter for 6 people). Moreover, the guide was constantly lost and not able to provide information on the hike. This was clearly not an easy walk, even for people used to hike. Don't do it if you are not in a very good condition. It was very hard for me with my 3-month pregnancy, and another lady almost destroyed her knees. The 139 euro "Top Easy" tour was not at all what we were described. We complained to the agency and were told that we had not understood the description. However, our co-travellers had the same understanding as us. The agency eventually paid back 30 euros (out of the 278 paid for two people) but this is clearly not enough given the mismatch between the description and the actual experience. I'd prefer not imagining how hard the hike would have been for old people attracted by the so-called "easy" walk. As a conclusion, I suggest that you run away from this agency.
We booked a tour in English but it was not an English tour. It was more like a Spanish tour with poor English translation. The "picnic" location was filthy & was infested with flies & ants. It was unpleasant trying to eat there. Would not recommend.
I'm not a hiker so I had naturally many questions about the tour. The Etna experience guys were very friendly and explaining everything to me even before we paid for the tour on WhatsApp,on a Friday night. On the morning of the tour, they picked us up at the exact meeting time, 100m from our apartment. Giovanni, our guide, was telling us interesting Etna information and funny stories all the way up in the van. During the whole day, he never seemed bored or uninterested even though he's doing this every day. The tour includes all different aspects of Etna, from the highest summit, to a lava cave at the mountain base. Giovanni was very helpful during the whole day, he was even carrying extra water bottles for two girls in our tour that came unprepared. He has really many information about Etna and vulcanos in general, and also had a great sense of humour. We had an amazing day, an unforgettable experience and we're blown by 130km/h winds! Thank you Giovanni! To everyone, we highly recommend you to take this tour and Giovanni as your guide! p.s. Giovanni's mom makes the best arancini in the world!
We just spend a great day on the Etna with its different facets. We were picked up at our hotel by Giovanni who carefully looked at our gear to see if it is sufficient. If you are not prepared, there’s a possibility to borrow hiking boots and sticks. Even a jacket if you didn’t bring one. And yes, you need the gear! We have seen many people going up with normal shoes and without a jacket but some had to stop mid-way. So along the way from the hotel towards picking up the other participants, Giovanni skillfully explained all there is to know about the geological and botanical aspects of the Etna and the Island itself. You noticed his great passion for his work, his country but especially the wondrous Etna. He is a very communicative and patient person, who looks out for everyone within the group. Apparently, it is obligatory to join an official volcano guide on the top. But Giovanni was much better and more thorough in explaining all there is to know. The lunch was a very cozy and simply done surprise of Italian pastries and sweets. The hiking trail through the botanical valley of the Etna was beautiful and ended with a Big Bang: a stunning view on the other side of the Etna. Once more the biggest thank you to Giovanni: best guide ever!!!
We booked a whole day Etna excursion as we wanted to see the most of Etna. I can only say positive things about the tour: + our guide Tony had a lot of knowleadge about the volcano which he shared with us in an interesting and involving way; he even made the stories about the volcano flora sound exciting + since it is a tour for a relativly small group (8 people plus the guide) it feels more personalised + our 5 year old kept up with the whole group - the tour is appropriate for a wide range of age + very enjoyable lunch consisting of Sicilian fingerfood and wine + transport from and to the hotel
We took this tour as a family of four with two young kids in January 2019. Other tour companies were inflexible and did not want to provide us with a tour that we thought our kids would enjoy. Essentially, we had great snow at the start of out holiday and the kids were desperate for more snow fun before we flew home. Etna was covered in the stuff,so we reached out to a few tour companies. Etna experience gave us excellent communication, and offered a great experience. Our tour guide, Floriana was incredibly knowledgeable (on botany, vulcanology, speleology, history and culture) and personable, and could answer the questions of a curious 12 year old or a 9 year old or an adult in fluent English or Italian. When the weather on Etna became dangerous, she shepherded us to a safer, still snowy area for the kids to have fun. I highly and frequently recommend this company and this tour to all and sundry, so much so that we booked to do another tour (of Tono) the next day.
We asked for a tour for New Year's Day. We ended up being the only two people on the tour with our excellent guide, Giuseppe. It had snowed on Mt Etna the night before, and the police were stopping cars without chains from going up the mountain. Let's just agree that Sicilians are crazy drivers. Despite that, Giuseppe managed to drive through the snow covered roads. We had wonderful views, learned a lot, and had a great time. Giuseppe was wonderful, though he should smile a bit more. Perhaps it was because he had to work on New Year's Day. We highly recommend the tour and Giuseppe as a tour guide.
An unforgettable tour! They picked me up and dropped me off near the hotel. The guide always answered our questions, explained everything to us, showed us different craters, and then took us to lunch, which was delicious. I highly recommend not missing this tour.
Very well organized, punctual ..... everything perfect!!!! . Guiovani guide super professional and super friendly.
:) Maciej&Gabi
Fantastic experience and very interesting! Giovanni was our tour guide and was very good! Both a cool, smart and fun guide so could answer all of the questions. Exciting to see so much on the volcano, stylish crying and delicious lunch! Recommended!
