Itinerary
Yunnan Road, Shanghai's famous 'Gourmet Street.' It's packed with decades-old, time-honored restaurants serving the most classic and authentic Shanghainese dishes. It's a must-visit for anyone wanting to taste the real, traditional flavors of the city.
The Great World (大世界),opened in 1917, this wasn't just an amusement park; it was the absolute heart of Shanghai's entertainment universe for decades. In its heyday, you could come here and find everything: acrobats tumbling, magicians performing, opera singers, comedy shows, fortune tellers, and even just cheap, delicious street food. It was the ultimate escape for everyone, from wealthy socialites to everyday workers. It was the place to see and be seen. Now, it's more of a curated museum of fun, but its spirit is absolutely timeless.
Step into the geographical center of Shanghai and discover a site of dramatic transformation. In the 1920s and 30s, this was the famed Shanghai Racecourse, the playground of international elites. Today, it's a symbol of modern China, housing world-class cultural venues. The square's evolution from a symbol of colonial past to a proud public space perfectly mirrors the larger story of Shanghai itself—a city constantly reinventing itself while honoring its history.
Wangjiasha: The King of Shanghai's Dim Sum.Founded in 1945, this legendary eatery has earned its reputation as the undisputed champion of traditional Shanghainese snacks and seasonal delicacies. Locals flock here for generations-old recipes perfected over decades. For an authentic taste of Shanghai's heritage—beyond tourist traps—Wangjiasha offers a genuine, time-honored experience. It's not just a meal; it's a bite of the city's history.
Nanjing West Road: Where Old-World Glamour Meets Ultra-Modernity As one of the world's most prestigious shopping streets, Nanjing West Road is Shanghai's undeniable showcase of luxury, power, and style. This iconic boulevard is a canyon of gleaming skyscrapers, flagship stores for every major global brand, and five-star hotels. This is more than a shopping street; it's a timeline of Shanghai's ambition. Stroll past the legendary Portman Ritz-Carlton and the tranquil Jing'an Park, reminders of its cosmopolitan heritage. Then, witness the breathtaking future at landmarks like the LV "Starship" Maison and the towering Plaza 66. The true magic of Nanjing West Road lies in this constant dialogue between its historic, tree-lined sections and its jaw-dropping, futuristic segments.
Wujiang Road Pedestrian Street, located in central Shanghai's Jing'an District, is a historic and iconic snack food destination. Originally a bustling market street, it was redeveloped into a modern pedestrian zone but retains its vibrant culinary spirit. It's famous for offering a dense concentration of both classic Shanghai snacks and Chinese regional specialties in a lively, casual atmosphere.
Shanghai Zhangyuan, also known as Zhang Garden, was the largest and most modern public park in late 19th-century Shanghai. Opened in 1885 by a Chinese businessman, it was much more than just a garden—it was a famous entertainment complex featuring a traditional Chinese garden, a theater, a photography studio, restaurants, and even an early outdoor skating rink. It quickly became the city's most fashionable social hub, where people from all walks of life, including foreigners and locals, gathered to see and be seen. It was a symbol of modernity, where the public could experience new technologies like electric lights and watch hot-air balloon demonstrations. Although the original park closed in 1918 and the land was developed into residential lanes, its legacy as a pioneering public space remains. Today, the area has been revitalized, with its historic shikumen houses transformed into a high-end retail and dining destination, blending its rich history with contemporary life.

I enjoyed it a lot. Especially liked the fact that it was in a small group (friendly atmosphere, with Jane as guide) and that we had different food spots with some city discoveries in between, good balance! And being a solo traveller, it is a good way to discover in a short time many dishes that would have been too much to order by myself 😊
What a great experience! My favorite was the Szechuan food we had! Even though it was spicy for me, the flavor was amazing. Jane was a fantastic tour guide! I highly recommend.
A phenomenal experience with the most knowledgeable guide. More than just the food, Jane was happy to answer questions about the city, the architecture, the history, and of course: more food recommendations. The tour was a pleasure. We felt neither rushed, nor pressured, and everything was delicious. 10/10 Would Book Again.
This tour was amazing. Jane is a wonderful guide and puts so much thought into which places to go and what information to tell you about them. Her English is great, so no issues with communication. We got to try a great variety of foods and learn how they connect to culture. I can't think of a way this could be better. Loved it!
A big shout out to Jane who took us on a food tour. She was so helpful and the food was delicious!! Highly recommend this tour.
Excellent tour with lots of other interesting information on Shanghai and its history as well as the food and its story. Great fun guide in Jane who has excellent English. Much better than a similar, highly rated Shanghai food tour that I took.
Our tour was absolutely amazing! Jane was extremely knowledgeable about every place we visited and shared so much additional information along the way. The food was SO good, but the best part of the entire experience was our guide, Jane. She truly made the tour special and did an amazing job from start to finish. I would definitely recommend this tour!
The evening Shanghai food tour with Jane was absolutely fantastic! Being in a small group of three created a warm, friendly vibe, and Jane was an incredible guide who showed us amazing local flavors we never would have found on our own. Three hours of delicious food and great atmosphere—a truly wonderful experience!
My tour with Jane was really incredible. We were only a small group with 2 people, which made the tour even more intimit. I only had a short time to experice as much food in Shanghai as i could, this tour definitly gave me the best varity. Jane was really lovely, next providing a lot of interesting and delicous dishes, she also gave some insights in the city during small walks. Would definitly book again! Bring an empty stomach
Jane is very experienced and very knowledgeable. She is very friendly and very helpful, and shares all extra info useful for first time visitors. She takes effort to take care of everyone down to every small detail. Her genuine sincerity is what makes this so special.
My wife and I absolutely loved this tour! Jane was a spectacular guide: knowledgeable, engaging, and clearly passionate about Shanghai's culture, history, and arts. Every stop came with fascinating stories that made the experience so much more than just a food tour. Now, the food selection was outstanding. Jane chose an exquisite variety of authentic dishes, each one a delight, and the pacing was perfect. We couldn't have asked for a better culinary experience. This was one of the highlights of our time in Shanghai, and we highly recommend it!
The food selection was local and very tasty. The walking helped digest the food and open up your appetite before the next course. Jane was very kind and knowledgeable of Shanghai history. It was a great experience that I would definitely do again
This was a great evening out hopping local places for genuine local foods. Walking in the lively area of French and English quarters with lighting up is exciting itself but the stories that the guide Jane shared added more. I was alone but didn't feel any discomfort. I recommend this tour to any of food lovers.
I signed up for this walking tour to get an introduction to the local food spots that local people frequent, rather than the usual tourist destinations, and I was not disappointed. Jane brought us to shops serving delicious noodles, wontons, and soup dumplings, while sharing the history of the places and buildings we passed along the way, giving us a glimpse into Shanghai’s past. She was an excellent guide who took great care of us throughout the tour. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone considering a walking food tour in Shanghai.
Jane took us on an amazing evening food tour through Shanghai. She always provided interesting information and context behind each dish. The tastings were very delicious and I had so much fun! I’d highly recommend this tour.
Jenny made our first night in Shanghai a blast. Lots of great local and Szechuan food, plenty of interesting sights around Nanjing Road and lots of culture and history on what was a pleasant stroll around Shanghai. We would highly recommend!
This is a wonderful way to get to know more about Shanghai and enjoy the local food scene. Our guide Jenny was excellent, having grown up in the city and able to tell us in a very real way about the changes. We enjoyed a lot of food and a personally guided tour that has increased our understanding of the city. The value of this tour is very good.

Really great tour, Jane was very nice and showed me a lot of great places and great food. A couple of the places we went would be difficult to get into without long waits but she made this all go seamlessly. I would 100 percent recommend.
I've lived in Shanghai for three years and thought I'd tried it all. Jenny proved me wrong. From the spicy chicken at Sichuan Resturaunt to the perfectly balanced coconut dessert in the end, every bite felt new . Jenny wove in history, local legends, and even stopped to show us the Former Jewish Recreation Club along the way. It's rare to find a tour that surprises a local. This one did. Thank you, Monster Day Tours Shanghai!
The Shanghai After Dark Food Tour was hands down one of the coolest nights of our trip. Experiencing the city after sunset gave it a completely different energy — neon lights, buzzing streets, and late-night food stalls packed with locals. It felt vibrant and alive in a way that daytime sightseeing just can’t capture. Our guide, Chris, made the entire evening effortless and fun. He had the perfect balance of knowledge and humor, sharing stories about the neighborhoods while guiding us confidently through the lively streets. With Monster Day Tours handling all the details, we never had to worry about where to go or what to order. From sizzling skewers on bustling Zhejiang Road to cozy late-night eateries tucked into side streets, every stop felt authentic and thoughtfully chosen. What made the tour special was how immersive it felt ,we weren’t just tasting dishes, we were experiencing Shanghai’s night culture. Sharing plates, trying bold flavors, and walking through glowing streets together created the kind of memories you talk about long after the trip ends. If you want to see a different side of Shanghai, this tour is an absolute must.
I booked this food tour while traveling solo in Shanghai and it was a solid experience. We covered a lot of ground around Zhejiang Road and People’s Park, areas that feel much more 'real' than the typical tourist spots. The food was definitely the highlight, tried some traditional items and heritage pastries that I probably wouldn't have known how to order on my own. Alice was a helpful guide. She was friendly and kept the group together well while sharing some interesting bits about the local culture and the history of the dishes we were eating. Everything felt very authentic and the pace was comfortable.
This tour was such a special way for us to spend the evening. Instead of just dining out, it felt like we were stepping into different layers of Shanghai culture right here in Singapore. From lively streets filled with energy to more intimate dining spots, every stop revealed a new side of the cuisine and the stories behind it. Our guide, Michael, made the entire experience seamless and engaging. He struck the perfect balance between sharing cultural insights and keeping the atmosphere relaxed and fun. We never felt rushed, and he navigated each location effortlessly, allowing us to simply enjoy the food and the moment. What we loved most was how the route connected tradition with modern influences, showing how Shanghai cuisine continues to evolve while staying rooted in heritage. The pacing was ideal, indulgent, immersive, and full of great conversation. We left feeling satisfied not just by the incredible dishes, but by the deeper understanding of the culture behind them. Highly recommended for couples or anyone looking for a vibrant, flavour-packed evening experience
As a first-time visitor, I knew nothing much about Shanghai. However, this tour introduced us to a whole array of insights in just a few hours. We could feel the fusion spirit of the East meeting West as well through the things we saw like the iconic Starbucks Roastery to other places like the Zhang Garden. We also tried a variety of dishes that I might not have ordered on my own. Definitely recommend this tour and also the guide, Jane!
Shanghai After Dark experience delivers something increasingly rare in a global megacity: authenticity. This wasn’t just a food tour—it was an immersion into Shanghai’s nightly rhythms and social rituals. I lived the evening like a local where sitting shoulder to shoulder with office workers to sharing dessert and stories that lingered long after the plates were cleared. Especially the small-group format also encouraged a hearty conversation, turning strangers into genuine travel companions. I find the food delicious, and experience is deeply satisfying.
The Shanghai Culinary Night Walking Tour was the best way to experience authentic Shanghai cuisine. In just a few hours, we enjoyed legendary local eateries, modern icons like the Starbucks Roastery, and everything in between. The food was outstanding, and our guide, Sophia, made the night seamless and enjoyable with her great service and local insights. It was the perfect blend of adventure, culture, and incredible flavours. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Shanghai, it’s an experience we’d gladly repeat on our next trip!
I really enjoyed the Shanghai Culinary Night Walking Tour. It was a great mix of delicious food, walking through local neighborhoods, and learning more about Shanghai’s culture.

Within that few hours, we enjoyed a wonderful mix of legendary local eateries, modern icons like the Starbucks Roastery, and everything in between. The food was outstanding, and our guide, Jenny, made the entire evening seamless and enjoyable with her attentive and friendly service. As a solo traveller, the Shanghai Culinary Night Walking Tour was hands down one of my favourite experiences in the city. It was the perfect way to dive into authentic Shanghai cuisine while also enjoying great company along the way. In just a few hours, I discovered legendary local eateries, modern icons like the Starbucks Roastery, and plenty of hidden gems in between. Our guide (Alice) made the entire evening feel effortless and welcoming. The tour offered a rare balance between adventure, culture, and amazing food. I never once felt awkward or rushed although I was on my own. I’d absolutely do this again on my next visit to Shanghai and highly recommend it to anyone travelling solo or otherwise.
Visiting as a couple, the Monster Day Tours Night Food Tour turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. It was far more than just eating it felt like a journey through Shanghai’s culinary soul. We loved how the route took us from charming old Shikumen lanes to the modern buzz of the Starbucks Roastery, seamlessly telling the story of how the city has evolved. Every stop was thoughtfully chosen, and each dish from comforting street-food classics to regional specialties was clearly explained, making the experience both delicious and meaningful. Our guide Sophia was fantastic: warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely attentive. She made sure everyone felt included and comfortable, and her passion really brought the tour to life. This tour didn’t just feed us; it helped us understand Shanghai’s food culture on a deeper level. A truly memorable experience and absolutely one we’d recommend to other couples visiting the city.
As a first-time visitor, this night food tour was such a great way to ease into Shanghai. The route was thoughtfully put together, mixing iconic spots with quieter historic areas and very local food stops, which helped everything make sense rather than feel overwhelming. What I really appreciated was how the tour showed different sides of the city in one evening — old and new, local and international — without it feeling rushed. The food was varied and genuinely enjoyable, and I tried dishes I probably wouldn’t have ordered on my own. Our guide was engaging, clear, and made the whole experience relaxed and fun. It was a social, filling, and insightful night, and easily one of the highlights of my trip. I’d absolutely recommend this tour to anyone wanting a deeper feel for Shanghai
