We were a family of 3 (mom, dad, and teenage son) taking this tour. After some quick introduction of the bikes, we got going on the tour. Charlie was an amazing guide! We saw a different side of Shanghai being on bikes than we would have via car or on foot. Doing this bike ride at night is the key to this being even more amazing. Don’t hesitate. Sign up for this tour because you won’t regret it.

Thank you so much, Charlie, for an incredible tour! We absolutely loved every moment. We’ve done many cycling tours around the world, but this one truly stands out as our favorite. We felt we got to see so much of the city and learned a great deal along the way - Shanghai is such a beautiful and fascinating place! Charlie’s knowledge, kindness, and generosity made the experience unforgettable. Every stop felt thoughtfully chosen, and the personal touches (including the thoughtful gifts!) made it all the more special. We’re so grateful for the memories and can’t recommend this tour highly enough!!
Wonderful experience to see and feel Shanghai by bike! Thanks for showing some various aspects of this vibrant city, Q!
I had a fantastic experience doing a bike tour in Vietnam and now I can add Shanghai to the list! The roads were easy to navigate with Charlie who was kind, respectful and informative for the entire trip. Charlie thought of everything and even stopped for extra food I wanted to try! So much history to the city and Charlie was very knowledgeable. So much to explore still but we covered a lot of ground. Beautiful experience, safe and would highly recommend for young, old, family’s and anyone really 🤩
Mister Q was amazing as our guide. It was a tour well worth it despite the natural troubles in the rain and clouds. Cycling in Shanghai at night is something you should not miss!
We had a great evening cycling around Shanghai. We learnt so much from Charlie. With limited time, it’s a great way to get a feel for Shanghai in a short space of time. Going by bicycle meant that we could cover a lot of ground, like a local, in and around a wide variety of areas. The choice of dishes to try at the end, were delicious. All four of us unanimously loved this tour. Thank you Charlie!
It was nice. Q was nice. We got sneak peak on shanghai. And then we could see for ourselves where we wanted to be. And explore more.
Guided by Mister Q, we had great time discovering SH by night and bicycle and learnt a lot about history, architecture, pharmacy and food.
Q was amazing! Patient and kind and so well prepared. We had the best time. The places we visited were interesting and different too, and Q had a lot of interesting details to share. The food at the end was delicious. Great intro to Shanghai! Couldn’t believe we were cycling in the Wild West of Shanghai roads- felt very safe with Q leading us.
Q is such a nice guy, he became a genuine friend. Perfect English and French speaker. I was in Shanghai for a week prior to doing the tour, I regret not doing the tour earlier because I enjoyed it so much and heard so much on the tour about Chinese culture.
I chose this bike tour to see more of Shanghai and to meet new people, I did exactly that. Charlie, the tour guide is amazing! Lots of interesting information and I saw so much! It was great to start off whilst it was still light then see Shanghai at night. Includes a delicious local snack and the traditional vintage bikes are a lovely touch too. I’d recommend this tour for sure! I also look forward to booking other tours with them soon too. Thank you Charlie!
Was a really nice and interesting tour, top organized, super nice guide, and yummy local food. Even we have been here for 5 years, we heard a lot of new exciting stories !!!
After living in Shanghai for 5 years, we did the bike night tour with Nicolas who helped us to discover some hidden and unexpected places. We were exiting and impressed like in the first days : a mandatory experience to enjoy life for all of us that cannot travel far away because of restrictions! Whoever you are, a tourist or an expat, don’t miss this unique experience to discover Shanghai in company of a keen Nicolas. Touriste d’un jour ou de toujours à Shanghai, n’hésitez pas faire une visite en vélo avec Culture Shock Tours
Although we have been living in Shanghai for several years, my friends and I really enjoyed rediscovering the city through the night hike tour. Our guide, Charlie was very friendly, paying attention to our expectations, and totally fluent in English. Her introduction of the different places we visited was interesting with just the right level of details. The vintage bikes they are using for the tour are super nice and very comfortable to ride. We had a great time and definitely recommend this tour.
Took the "Shanghai Night Tour by Bike" with guide Charlie. Highlights: - Went to a local noodle shop for dinner, SO GOOD - Calm bike ride with a tour guide that you could trust - Interesting information about Shanghai history, architecture, and Chinese culture I would recommend this bike ride for newcomers and Shanghai residents alike. The information was great but the friendly, knowledgable guide made the experience incredible. 5 Stars!
Fun experience! Really enjoy this biking experience in Shanghai by night. Our bike tour leader Charlie showed us the charm of night Shanghai and some little Shanghai stories. The noddle shop really amazed me (strongly recommend the "congyoubanmian"). Although I saw the bund view many time during 6 years in Shanghai, but I enjoyed the differet angle of bund landscape view that she showed us. Highyly recommended!
I have entered my 6th year in Shanghai but this was my first time with the Culture Shock team. And it won't be the last!! Amazing experience with Charlie! Amazing local food (The noodles in soup were the best I had in the city!), great anecdotes and a few surprises I was not expecting! Definitely recommand!
Amazing experience ! It was wonderful to discover Shanghai and its history by bike during the night! Thanks to our guide for his very interesting explanations.
This tour is a wonderful summary of Shanghai throughout its tremendous history. Between tradition and modernity, from food to architecture, this tour On traditional chinese bicycles is a great way, both for teenagers and adults, to fall in love with the city!
We had a night tour with a group already living in shanghai for many years and it was great. Beautiful Shanghai from another perspective old and new. In between stops and snacks. A lively outing in our own great city indeed nice guidance from culture shock!
Everything about the tour was ideal, I would highly recommend it. I was in Shanghai on business so doing a night tour was perfect. I do a bike tour in every country I visit - it’s an ideal way to cover lots of ground and get to know a city. On arrival at the office, German (our excellent Spanish guide) sat us down introduced himself and talked us through the tour, showing us on the map. The bikes were in good condition with lights and a helmet. We had a great tour - highlights were going inside a courtyard in the old Chinese quarter and visiting a traditional Chinese medicine pharmacy. We also had a visit at the start to a cafe for authentic noodles which were delicious. This is ideal as we chatted as a group and got to know each other. Throughout the tour German gave us cultural and historical info - just the right amount of information. We took lots of photos including at the British bridge in front of the Bund for good views. It was relaxed and leisurely and German was excellent company. Next time I would book a day tour if I can. And I would definitely use Culture Shock tours again.
We spend more than 3 hours discovering Shanghai with our guide, she was really nice and gave us a lot of information. I will definitely do it again with some friends when they will visit us. I strongly recommend this tour !!!
Our family of 3 (with an 11 year old) signed up for the Night Tour at the recommendation of a friend. It did not disappoint. The team was so accommodating and suggested an ebike for my husband and daughter. They loved it. The bike I rode was super easy to use. Our tour guide, Chris, was lovely and informative. She was able to make things interesting for all of us and did an excellent job leading us through the dynamic city streets. The stop for snacks was super fun. I would totally recommend this tour - great way to see the city - fun to ride around it too!
I've actually lived in China multiple years, learned some Chinese, etc, but what is fun about the bike tour is you have someone leading you through the small, maze-like streets. You don't have to do any of the real thinking, and can just ride along and enjoy the sites, views, and atmosphere. (And these bikes are awesome. They are the old-school style Chinese bikes, which are super durable, quintessential, comfortable, and recall to mind an older time period of Chinese history.) Our guide, Chris, was amazing; she had a lot of information to share and took us to a great local noodle shop as well as to look at the soon-to-be-torn-down shikumen (selling point, go now while you can still see them). While you can go check any of these places out yourself, having someone explain what you are looking at is sooooo helpful and makes the place a lot more interesting. Highly recommend because: - Friendly guide, friendly staff, quick responses from the company about any questions - Chris was great; I'm sure their other guides are equally competent - Fun to try local food - Great sights - Planned route so that anyone can do it, enjoy it, learn a little bit. Even the other Chinese girl with us learned some new tid bits about the area.
What an absolutely amazing experience we had!!! We got to see old Shanghai and newer Shanghai. We stopped and had delicious traditional noodles and later yummy lamb skewers. A real must!!!
We join a Night Tour by bike. All of my family is really satisfied this tour and also recommendable. We can know the Shanghai’s developement history from our guide Hana who is pretty and friendly. Her explanation makes perfect sense to our ears. Thank you for your guide. This tour is really really memorable memory for our family
I found this tour very interesting. We toured areas that traditional tours do not go through and each tour guide curates the tour according to the group and their individual interests/knowledge. Food was great and group was small, which made it easy to navigate around the city. Bike ride was smooth and generally pain free. The fact that it was in the evening was probably the best part because it was wayyyyy to hot to do a bike tour during the day.
Thoroughly enjoyed my tour with Charlie, my second time with Culture Shock, the tour was interesting, informative and lots of fun, a great way to feel part of the city
My guide, 瞿康俐, was incredible. We stopped at a noodle place, the old city, a medicine store, and a couple other places along the way. My guide knew a lot and she made my experience really one-of-a-kind. I highly recommend!
A night tour on bike was a great way to see the city as it wasn't too hot and Shanghai comes alive after dark. I really enjoyed learning about the food, architecture and TCM plus we got some great photos of the Bund from a less crowded vantage point.
Everything was great, the guide, Acorus, is knowledgable, nice and kind. The local snacks and the barbecue really tasty and authentic. The tour is very safe also for non usual bikers and it is a very fascinating way of discovering Shanghai. I would definitely recommend it and would come back for another one if I'm back to Shanghai.
Wether you're new to Shanghai or you have been living there for a while, this tour is truly amazing! You can discover Shanghai by night, which has a charm of its own. The guides are very nice, very friendly, open to questions and discussion. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who's even a little curious about Shanghai's local culture! Will definitely do again!
First trip to Shanghai and what an awesome way to experience our first day in this amazing city. Mike (Michele) was an incredible host for both the French and the English speaking. Traffic to our surprise was not a major issue (not even a minor issue). Mike shared some interesting history of Shanghai, a few nice foodie stops, and found a great photo stop without all the tourists for a great shot of the Bund and the riverside night lights. He also gave us some personalized recommendations on what to do in our next few remaining days. Would recommend to anyone that is above beginner level on a bike! Will be one of your more memorable evenings in Shanghai for sure!
I did the night bike tour with German and had a great time! You get to see parts of the Old Town that you would not normally see and the trip to the Chinese Medicine Pharmacy was fascinating. I enjoyed all of the history and info that was shared with us, and loved the snacks along the way! I highly recommend.
After 6 years living in Shanghai we decided to take the bike night tour to invite our guests to see the city from a different perspective....and it was a great decision. The tour was fantastic: Nice combination of visiting old neighborhoods and trying delicious food. The lamb in Zhejiang lu was fantastic. Our guide Acorus was the best. She was very friendly with a nice personality, good knowledge about the city and excellent English. The best score for Acorus. absolutely recommendable tour!!
We had a spectacular night, it was a very well done tour and my visits enjoyed it a lot. My thanks to the Culture Shock Tour, especially our guide, was extremely loving, kind and did her job very well, she was really part of our team.
As a great fan of Culture Shock, I try to book a tour each time I have family or friends visiting us. This time, we were with a young cousin and our 2 teens and it was my 2nd night tour. Our guide, Nicolas Grevot, a real Shanghai lover, was passionate and his comments really accurate. Old city, Yu garden area, Former French Concession, Art Deco buildings, Suzhou Creek... there is always something new and different to discover in Shanghai, even after several years, and these guys know it! If you want to feel the pulse of Shanghai and discover few gems of this unique city, just book a bike tour with Culture Shock! And the night atmosphere is a great bonus...
Wonderful knowledge of Shanghai. Thoroughly enjoyed the stories and insights shared and the bonus was the delicious food we ate on the way. The architecture in the international concession area is fabulous. Highly recommend it and have rebooked another tour with them.
We were in Shanghai for 3 days and chose to do the night cycling tour with our teenagers. We had a great evening and really enjoyed it. The highlight was the evening view of all the skyscrapers though everything was really good.
We got a recommendation to do Culture Shock's Night Tour by Bike from some friends that lived in Shanghai for a few years. They raved about it, so we had high expectations. Needless to say, our tour shattered those expectations. We spent over a week and a half in Southeast Asia (Singapore, Malaysia and Shanghai) - this was by far the highlight of our entire trip. Our tour guide Hannah was phenomenal, incredibly knowledgeable, and a great guide through the massive city. Stopping to eat street food, and wontons from a local restaurant were delicious, seeing the financial district all lit up at night, and exploring back alleys and seeing how real residents lived were eye opening. Culture Shock lived up to its name. I would HIGHLY recommend this tour to anyone visiting - whether you had 1 day or 10 days in Shanghai.
This was a fantastic tour! Only thing we wish we would have done was do it earlier in our visit. They take you down through Shanghai to see the French, British, and American Concessions as well as a fabulous tour through Old Town Shanghai. The amount of information our tour guide Raff gave was incredible. Without giving away too much of what you see and do you won’t regret doing this tour! They take you to local places for snacks and give you a look of what China is like for the locals. This is a can’t miss to do in Shanghai.
We have joined this tour with a group of 11 participants. Everything was nicely arranged and our guide Mike is clearly very knowledgeable. We went through all interesting places in Shanghai.I truely recommend this tour to get a grasp on the Shanghai history as well as an insight into local living as it is right now. The fact that you are able to enjoy it while biking makes it extra special. Don't doubt, go for it! This was for me the most memorable experience in my whole week of Shanghai!
I loved discovering Shanghai's history, art, architecture and its inhabitants life during this bike tour. While discovering the city by bicycle is the best way to get a good picture of it, when your guide, as Tena, is really passionate about it, it's even more better! Thank you very much for this nice tour.
There is so much of Shanghai that is to be seen just beyond the incredible views of the Bund and this tour is exactly what needed if you want both — topped with a fascinating layer of culture! We were lucky enough to see and visit neighborhoods that might be gone in a couple of years. Our guide was friendly and deeply interested in Shanghai’s preservation. We tried local food on the way, learned about the city’s history and architecture, and had such a great time. Biking in Shanghai is quite an unmissable experience. I would highly recommend it!
When you see Shanghai traffic, you think “really? A bike tour through *that*? But Culture Shock ensures that you’ll feel safe. On their night tours, they only take 6 people, and you ride mostly through side streets in the old part of Shanghai, where you’re more apt to duck people on the street than cars. Our guide Mike took us through some very cool alleys, where we could see the traditional “lane” architecture. We also had two food stops - one at an authentic canteen and another at a more unusual lamb stand. I also loved the stop at the Chinese pharmacy. All in all, a great way to get out and explore the city!
This was an incredible tour. Our guide was super friendly, very caring about our comfort and safety and was always willing to “go the extra mile”. We visited places we would never have known about and I feel very privileged to have seen parts of Shanghai that gave us a glimpse into local people’s lives. The food we sampled was also delicious. Highly recommend.
Initially booked for the morning tour, but glad we changed to the night tour - Shanghai is hot in August! We saw so many things that we never would have even ventured to see had we tried to explore on our own. Would definitely recommend! :)
Vintage bikes, great fun, friendship and camaraderie. A history lesson rolling thru 3½ hours of gentle peddling along the back streets and alleyways of Old Shanghai, with a couple of stops to eat fresh home-made noodles, some BBQ meat skewers & flat bread with a local beer or soda thrown in. It's brilliant. If you just want to do the usual tourist stuff DON'T take this bike tour - it will make your other tourist trips seem like pale imitations of the real thing. Otherwise don't miss it!
Shanghai is a fabulous place ... especially at night. For my wife, the kids and me I decided to take a cultureshock night tour by bike. Mike, our guide took through the colonial parts ... French, British and American connection and showed us parts of the inner historic Shanghai. We cycled ways you would not see as a normal visitor feeling safe. We stopped at a soup kitchen, visited a pharmacie and went to a skewer grill station. We started our 4 hour tour in good weather but experienced heavy rain in the end. Mike explained very well and gave us all (including the kids) an excellent introduction to THE CITY.
I had a great night with Mike and other tourists bicycling through the centre of Shanghai. The route we took was surprisingly safe and not common tourists roads which we enjoy a lot since there were not much traffic and many authentic aspects of Shanghai. Mike is an excellent tour guide with a good sense of humour and in depth knowledge about Chinese culture and Shanghai. Each spot we stopped has an unique meaning and story behind it. I discovered Shanghai in a way that I won't find myself as a Chinese. All in all, it was a fantastic night!
