The guide was really nice and knowledgeable, we really had a good morning!
A great way to experience the local food and meet other travellers to share your experience of China
As this was my first visit to Shanghai I decided to take tag on a couple of days onto a business trip, and book the breakfast tour via TripAdvisor. It was my first time booking direct via TripAdvisor rather than going through a trusted travel agent or friend. I am so glad that I did! Andice met us at a designated station where we waited for 6 other people - a father and daughter, a single traveler and a family of four hailing from the US, UK and the Netherlands. What an interesting and fun tour it was. Andice was a great guide - knowledgeable, patient and highly organized. She stopped off at a convenient store to ensure that we could all purchase umbrellas, just before the sky opened up. The selection of food was perfect - everything I wanted to try, good quality and delicious; but the best part was to share the experience with other travellers. Highly recommended.
Love the experience. Fun and educational. A must do if you are new to the country.
Shanghai breakfast tour was an absolute highlights of our trip. I loved every single bite! Exploring the authentic local food scene and hidden spots was such an incredible experience. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Shanghai!
had such an amazing experience with the Lost Plate Food Tour this morning. It was so much more than just trying the local food. It was truly eye-opening to see Shanghai from a different perspective and discover the stories behind it because Our tour guide Max was absolutely wonderful. He was very helpful, friendly, and explained the history and culture behind each stop in detail, which made the whole experience feel much more meaningful.
Had a great breakfast tour with Lost Plate. All of the food was delicious and the guide provided great background information, descriptions of the food, and cultural notes about each location. I live in Shanghai and was still excited to discover dishes I haven't tried before, and shops to return to in the future.
Max is was incredibly knowledgeable! Had a great time trying and learning about breakfast foods in Shanghai. Got to try so many different foods 👏 still thinking about the scallion pancake
Really enjoyed my tour, our guide Max did a great job explaining the food and parts of the culture in Shanghai. I also appreciated his recommendations for other things to do in the area.
Max gave us a true local experience. He was very enthusiastic and took us all unique places which is difficult to know as a tourist. He is a good story teller too. I really enjoyed the food and dog cafe was the best. Max seemed very nice and a humble person. I wish him well
We had such a fun time with our fabulous guide Weijia. She was super informative, really lovely and took us to some fantastic spots that we would never have visited. There was plenty of stops (and plenty of food - do not eat the day before your tour!) We tried the best local breakfast food, and some awesome (and different!) coffees, as well as learning a lot about Shanghai and local foods of all sorts. I wish I had of booked the French Concession tour as well. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
We really enjoyed the tour, we leaned so much about breakfast and food culture in Shanghai. Our guide - Weijia - was very friendly, interesting and knowledgeable person, it was a great pleasure to meet her. All we food we tried was really tasty and also local, we saved so many cool suggestions for future. Thank you!
Max was an amazing tour guide, he showed us the most amazing food spots in Shanghai and was extremely informative in everything we ate as well as giving us a history lesson on the local area and Shanghai
Emma was great to talk, super interesting and fun, she gave us lots of historical information about food, traditions and culture. I loved it a lot. I recommend 100%!!
Great food, and the tour guide shared a lot of information about Shanghai. You can go sightseeing by yourself in the area after you are done. Would definitely recommend
Had a great time strolling through the eateries of Shanghai with Max as our tour guide. Was so interesting to get a local's perspective on the city. Tried food I never would have tried otherwise.
Excellent breakfast food tour around the French concession area! The food was delicious and the coffee was great! Emma was a fantastic guide, friendly, knowledgeable, and engaging. Highly recommend!
Max was great! Tasty food, great explanations and friendly conversation. A perfect first morning in Shanghai!
An excellent way to see more than just the popular tourist sights. We also did the dinner tour, but if I had to choose one, I would opt for the breakfast tour because Chinese breakfast is so different from what we usually eat in the mornings. The breakfast tour route is also more convenient, with less walking. Max, the local Shanghainese guide, was very knowledgeable and took great care of the whole group.
Max was awesome. A local Shanghainese and very knowledgeable about the history of the city and the cuisine.
The tour was fantastic. We had delicious food and coffee, learned about culture and history and our tour guide Max was absolutely amazing! He was super knowledgeable, funny and friendly. Highly recommend!
Emma took a friendly little group to a variety of simple eating places to experience breakfast like a local. It was interesting, tasty and fun
Emma made the tour a friendly group experience where we experienced early morning Shanghai as a local
The guide Emma contacted prior to the tour to coordinate the meeting point. The experience was very good, he explained each dish in detail and he fulfilled the established agenda. I am very grateful to her, I recommend this tour.
What a wonderful experience. I love Shanghai and have been a few times before, but as a tourist it is quite difficult to find the best local food and not simply go where all the other tourists go. In this breakfast tour I went to places I would never have found by myself and the food really was spectacular. Each stop was different and uniquely local and authentic. Our guide (Jiachen) was lovely and told us a lot about Shanghai history as well as the food. I will do this tour every time I come to Shanghai. It really is an amazing experience and is highly recommended.
We had an excellent time trying out breakfast options in Shanghai! Plenty of food and otherwise we would have not been able to try them since some of the things can be hard to order on your own. Great experience!
Great tour with Max! Loved that we went to authentic little local hole in the walls which we would have never found ourselves. And bite sized bits of history thrown in by Max made it all the more interesting!
We had a fantastic experience with Max, our guide. The breakfast tour was a brilliant way to experience some Shanghai breakfast foods, and we tried a massive variety of things. Had we not been on the tour, we probably wouldn't have tried most of what we did, but are so glad we tried it. Delicious food and a great experience. Max added to the tour with some wonderful historical facts and information as we went. He was excellent with our 8 yr old, and very receptive to questions. It was perfect for a variety of ages. Bit of walking in between stops, but this all helped the food go down. I'd highly recommend this tour if you get the chance, but do it early in your stay so you can go back for more of the things you liked!
Max was a delight. Friendly, professional, very knowledgeable. Great to see through local eyes and tastes.
The Breakfast & Coffee Tour was an excellent way to experience Shanghai’s breakfast scene! Max was great as a host from sending a message the day before to confirm my food allergy up until the end. He made sure everyone was accommodated for and was also able to share lots of knowledge at each stop. The amount of food you get for the price is completely worth it. I was full after the second stop, but the tour was paced well with two coffee breaks and 5-10 minutes in between venues that there was always just enough room for a little more. This was my second tour through Lost Plate in Shanghai and both were a great way to explore the city and get to taste a variety of foods. Would definitely recommend!
Max is a great host. Enjoyed our tour very much. Highly recommended.
An amazing way to start our trip. There was so much food and all of it was delicious. More than suitable for vegetarians, my partner was so happy with how he was accommodated. Jia Chen was an amazing guide and we really appreciated her insights into Chinese and Shanghainese culture. As Australians we were very happy to have some delicious coffee included on the tour
Loved Jia Chen's guide through the backstreets of Shanghai, helping us eat like a local. Jia was knowledgeable and enthusiastic, as well as being warm and friendly. The food we ate was delicious! Loved every moment of this incredible tour.
Great tour! And Max made the tour extra special! Highly recommend 🙏🏻
Our friendly guide Max was fantastic - he shared his knowledge not just about food but also local history and culture. The food & coffee stops were thoughtfully chosen - diverse, showcasing both Shanghai classics and contemporary coffee culture, and all within easy walking distance of each other. And everything was delicious! Thank you Max!!
This is the third Lost Plate tour I’ve been on, and it was the best so far. Max is an excellent guide and the food was amazing!
Loved Ruixi’s friendly manner and broad knowledge. Loved getting to know casual Chinese breakfast experiences.
Weijia is an upbeat sport who really showed us the best of the best of Shanghai breakfast. We went to so many local places and got a real taste of delicious specialties. Do not miss this. It was a highlight of my trip.
Had a lovely time on this tour with Max, who also told us more about Shanghai’s history ! I don’t eat meat and the alternatives for me were great 😊
We loved trying local breakfast options that we would never have discovered on our own. Max was such a friendly and knowledgeable guide with real enthusiasm for sharing the real Shanghai with visitors. The coffee spots were also super special! Thank you Max!
Not good, I arrived at the meeting place a few minutes late due to traffic and rain. They said they waited 10 minutes and the guide had an orange bag which is not a great indicator. I was there looking for 20 minutes, soaking wet and paid rt for taxi. I have used viator tours all over the World and this is the first time this has happened. I am not happy with the results which was a partial refund for a bad experience.
We had the best time on the Lost Plate breakfast tour with Angela! She was incredibly kind and so knowledgeable about the area, the history, and the food. It was my friend's first time in Shanghai, and this tour was the perfect introduction to the city. We left completely full and with a much deeper appreciation for local life and flavors. Angela made the whole experience warm, fun, and unforgettable. Plus, she was able to make sure the tour met my vegetarian needs. Highly recommend booking this tour—you'll be in great hands!
Good snapshot of small eateries in the not so touristy areas of Shanghai. Recommend to those who wish to have more insights to local food.
If you’re even thinking about exploring Shanghai through its food, Lost Plate Tours is a must—and the coffee & breakfast tour led by Emma is pure magic. From the very first stop, this tour was a perfect blend of incredible local flavors, thoughtfully curated coffee, and deep cultural insight. We sampled a mouth-watering lineup of breakfast dishes—each one better than the last—paired with truly excellent coffee that showcased Shanghai’s surprisingly vibrant café scene. It wasn’t just eating; it was understanding the food: where it comes from, why it matters, and how locals actually enjoy it day to day. And Emma? Absolute star. 🌟 Her professionalism, warmth, and expertise elevated the entire experience. She’s incredibly knowledgeable about Shanghai’s food culture, fluent at navigating neighborhoods and vendors, and genuinely passionate about what she does. Every explanation felt natural and engaging, every stop felt intentional, and the pacing was spot-on. She struck that rare balance of being both highly informative and effortlessly fun to spend a morning with. By the end of the tour, we felt happily full, extremely caffeinated, and way more connected to the city than we would have on our own. Whether it’s your first time in Shanghai or your tenth, this tour unlocks a side of the city you’d never find without a guide like Emma. 10/10 experience. Don’t miss it. If you love food, coffee, and learning through tasting—Lost Plate Tours (and Emma especially) will knock it out of the park.
It was great to try different local Shanghai foods and new styles of coffee. Max was a very knowledgeable guide and provided lots of information about Shanghai’s history and food culture. Even though I have been living in China for two years I still managed to learn something new.
Max was the best tour guide. Ever. The food was algo pretty great, which I personally consider to be essential for a food tour.
We had a great breakfast tour with Max! Learned so much about Shanghai and tried many new unique foods. Highly recommend!
Max was our tour guide and he was great! You can tell he knows Shanghai well and he pairs the great food and drinks with some interesting knowledge and tips. Max took our dietary needs into consideration and made sure we had some interesting local bites. I would highly recommend for anyone visiting shanghai
A Great way to spend the morning! Our intro to scallion pancakes had us salivating and wanting more. The 'exploding fish' was also delicious. Sylvia was very friendly and was very accommodating to even show us a street food market (veg and fish) which we stumbled upon.
