Great tour of Shanghai with Raven, she is fun, engaging, articulate and was open to any questions related to China. Really insightful talk on family life in China and the impact of the one child policy. The tour is long but has lots of stops and a snacks break. Raven really worked hard to address the many and varied questions from the participants. Possibly the best walking tour I have done. I saw numerous sights and in 4 hours know lots more about Shanghai specifically and China in general.

Me and my brother (both seniors) purchased the FREE tour advertised on the Viator website and Showaround for a Shanghai tour on Sept 30 , 2026. The tour was conducted by a knowledgeable woman called Cindy. Unfortunately it was raining during the whole tour and by the 3rd hour we told Cindy that we were leaving. We gave her a generous tip but she complained heavily that the tip should be much higher and possibly in US dollars ! It was a very sad confrontation that I’m sure the whole group carefully observed as they were going into and 4th hour of the tour. We totally deplore her actions as it reflects much more on her personally more than Viator and Showaround . It is obvious that the “ free” tour is clearly not so. Oddly , they now charge $5.00 per person to end the free tour argument and likely expect a big tip !! A response from your company is much welcomed.
After arriving in Shanghai late the night before this tour was perfect. We ticked off so many sights and learned so much which we would not have if we navigated Shanghai on our own. Raven our tour guide was so informative with a friendly personality. The tour was long, but it did not feel that way, with plenty of stops to rest while she shared information. We liked that Raven took us to a street we otherwise would not have walked down and suggested some places to try different foods. I highly recommend this tour if you want to cover a great deal in a relaxed way.
Our guide was very kind and knowledgeable doing all she could to show us Shanghai historical sites.
It was great. A special thank you to Raven, our guide. Four hours together were so interesting that we did not realize it was 4 hours. Raven English was perfect and she was very knowledgable. Highly recommended
We enjoyed our Shanghai walking tour experience with Dinna, who was an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide. Highlights for us were her frank comments about several Shanghai tourist traps and information about life in China, including the One Child policy and also about the aging population and the pension system. It was useful to learn about these aspects of life as well as learning about the places we visited on the tour. We also enjoyed the food stop.
It was a great tour guided by Cindy who did an outstanding job of herding us around downtown Shanghai. She was great.
We got a wonderful clear overview of Shanghai and major sites! And very tasty snacks! Highly recommend
Brilliant tour covering all the key sites. Nice pace and excellent commentary.
Great tour with lots of insights into History of Shanghai. Despite the rain, still had a great time. Recommend to do this tour when first arriving in Shanghai. Excellent pre walk details to find start.
Our guide Dinna was amazing, so informative and enthusiastic. Great tour to find out the basic history of Shanghai and how it developed in to the modern city it is today. Definitely worth it
What a great experience in Shanghai. Raven was a terrific guide and I learned much more about Shanghai than I had on a previous tour. She really knew her stuff. Walking was great fun, not too strenuous, but we covered all the basics. Maybe even “98% of Shanghai“. Loved her helpful hints and took advantage of her insights for the rest of the day and evening.
This was an excellent tour We learnt so much about the local life and values of the city. It was really educational. Highly recommended Raven did an excellent tour.
Love doing & experiencing Freetours in all the cities i travel to...especially engaging with a local & giving back to them! Always enjoy the food recommendations & Dinna did not disappoint. Her recommendations were savory, inexpensive, traditional & delicious! Dinna engaged with the group & was always cognizant when crossing the roads for the handful of stragglers who missed the green light. She always gave us sufficient time to explore a new area & take photos & was always open with her responses.
Very friendly and knowledgeable guide, it was perfect for my lay over in Shanghai and put some steps in between flights.
Our guide was great, however because it was a very big group we were constantly waiting for people and probably had too many breaks. In saying that, if you have time to kill or just one day for a stopover, the tour covered a lot of history and main sights of Shanghai.
Fantastic walking tour, super informative.
Celina took us on an interesting , cohesive walking tour around People’s Square, Nanjing Rd, The Bund and onto Old China Town. Her English was clear, she has a great sense of humor and she was empathetic to everyone’s needs.
Really great tour and Cindy was very knowledgeable about the history of Shanghai. Would recommend for all first time visitors.
Aubrey was a very nice guide. interesting and with a good vibe.
Such a great tour. Our guide Raven was super knowledgeable, she provided so many interesting facts and small details along the way. I would recommend this tour to anyone wanting to learn more about Shanghai’s culture and history!
Wonderful tour! Great guide and walking thru the city is a great way to go! Just be aware of the weather and making sure you have enough water, but we stopped at plenty of places to get rehydrated. Highly recommended!!!
Knowledgeable guide, good mix of history and info on contemporary China, excellent care of travelers - adequate breaks with facilities; stops in the shade. Highly recommended.
Dinna was amazing. And the tour super interesting and comprehensive!!
Cindy was brilliant. It's a long tour at 4.5 hours but didn't feel that long. Great lunch stop for some street food. Highly recommended. Cindy booked us into the French Concession tour but that got cancelled the day before because of rain.
This tour was wonderful! I was only in Shanghai for 3 days so I wanted to be able to experience the best sightseeing places without having to plan any of it myself and this tour accomplished that and more! Dinna our guide was amazing and she made the 4 hours pass in a flash. She also gave us great recommendations for food, other sightseeing spots, and rooftop bars which I really appreciated. She also gave us a booklet with places she recommended too. We had plenty of stops for bathroom breaks, snacks, water, and pictures. I cannot recommend this tour enough, thank you Dinna!!
Raven took us to so many places and told stories of how Shanghai came to be an international city from a fishing village. She had photos to show what it was like before so you could really get a feel for the changes. She was engaging and talked about the current ways of life putting it into context. She took us to several little food stalls to get the most delicious local foods. A really engaging, informative 5 hours because everyone had so many questions. I will do their other tour as well.
Very interesting tour with Dinna who thought us the history of Shanghai with a little touch of her own life. She was always smiling
Raven was our tour guide , made the adventure interactive, was a good experience as a solo traveller
Raven was our tour guide, she was very knowledgeable on the history of China! Some old before photos helped set the foundation of how quick the mega city had been built. Being a solo traveller the tour was fun to meet other travellers, four hours didn't even seem long was nice exercise with 10k + steps
it was whole lot of fun. dinna was very energetic and brought us to see something unusual -- the matchmaking market on weekends. she showed us the significant buildings in shanghai, and told us their histories. she had maps and pictures as visual aids. a great way to get to know shanghai. highly recommended!
One of the best free walking tours I ever did! Great people from all over the world, friendly staff and interesting information. Would book it again!
Excellent tour! Highly advise this to get your bearings on the city. Dinna our guide gave us the history of the city showing old photographs and providing lots of details plus advised us on activities to do when tour was over. Excellent English and answered all questions. Provided some current Chinese culture info too. Tour time flew and there were lots of breaks. Wear comfortable shoes and take an umbrella in case of rain.
The guides (Dinna) were very knowledgeable and gave interesting insights into culture, history and politics in China along the way. She also gave tips on managing sales people and where to buy great street food (we went back there). The tour itself covers mainly the old British section of the city and quickly assesses through the French concession and ends in the China town area but doesnt cover anything in there. Good tour but don’t expect much of French concession or old town.
Our guide Celina is very knowledgeable and passionate. She gave us recommendations for local snacks and drinks which were very tasty and cheap.
We had a great time with Celina walking around the city. She was a really good guide explained us a lot and gave us a lot of background information as well. Her language is perfect to understand and to follow. The chosen spots are good to get a first impression of the city. Recommended to participate in this tour if you want to explore Shanghai.
What a fantastic way to see so much of the city on foot, while hearing the history behind the buildings, parks and streets. When Dinna said that the tour would last around 4 hours my heart sank! In fact the time flew and after a stop off at couple of holes in the wall for authentic Shanghai treats, I was surprised when we reached Chinatown which was our final stop! Dinna and Cindy were engaging and happy to answer questions. I would highly recommend doing this tour and I was disappointed that we didn’t have time to do any of the other tours on offer! If you are going to book onto the tour, they asked that future bookings be made on their website so that they don’t have to pay the fees to the advertising companies.
Our guide Dinna was fantastic, very knowledgeable and friendly. The 4 hour tour gave us a large snapshot of Shanghai which we love. Highly recommend Dinna, you won’t be disappointed.
Great walking Tour. Seen a lot about Shanghai. We had an amazing tour guide. Great stories and insight into the Chinese History and Society
Raven showing us around SH was our first experience in the city, and how we’ve grown to like it! She was very knowledgeable, patient, & kind. Though the tour sounds long (3.5 hours), Raven kept it entertaining and it felt like it went by quickly! The tour company does a great job of trying to help in any way by giving thoughtful recommendations and even gave us a little booklet with some Chinese phrases which I really enjoy! The environment created in the group felt conducive to making friends with other group members and getting to know others from different places. Thank you so much to Raven & Free China Tours!
Fantastic way to see Shanghai with a local! Celina was exceptional. First rate guide who shared Shanghai's history as we saw some of the top tourist spots at a nice, relaxed walking pace. Plenty of rest stops, toilet break and the all important snack stop. From the moment she greeted us until she bid is farewell, Celina was delightful, professional, proficient and charming. I would highly recommend this tour, my only regret is that we weren't staying long enough to do the other tours! Take water and wear comfortable shoes
Great couple of hours exploring the city, the guide Dinna was very good and knowledgeable Loved the chance to sample the food, highly recommend for a chance to get your bearings in the city
Instructor was very knowledgeable. Speaks good english. It was long and extensive. I liked it!
Stacy was a great tour guide and told many interesting cultural stories that were quite informative. The tour itself was well organized, and we saw many interesting sights. I would highly recommend it!
Dinna was a great tour guide! She was engaging and shared lots of stories about the history behind Shanghai and the spots we visited along the way. I really enjoyed the older pictures she shared with us to show how things looked before the current Shanghai was established. Highly recommend!
We had an amazing experience on this free tour in Shanghai! Our guide was absolutely wonderful — super friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate about the city. She shared so many interesting facts and hidden details about Shanghai’s history, culture, and local life that we would have never discovered on our own. She also answered all of our questions with so much patience and enthusiasm, making the whole tour feel very personal and engaging. You could really tell she loves what she does. The tour was both fun and informative, and it gave us a much deeper understanding of Shanghai. Highly recommended for anyone visiting the city!
We had a wonderful tour of down town Shangahi, fully recomend.
We gained so much information from Stacey on Shanghai and traveled at a comfortable pace. Fully recommend.
We loved it! Celina was an amazing guide
Celina was our guide today & hosted the group really well . The introductory ice breaker she set up at the beginning helped the group gel & share stories during the tour . The tour itself was well set up & guided . Celina shared lots of historical local history at each place of interest - her anecdotal input was also really welcome . We only had 2 days in Shanghai so for us this was a great way to feel the essence of the city in a time efficient way . We thoroughly enjoyed it & would have no hesitation in recommending the tour .
