I had a very positive experience on this journey of amazing foods. My guide, Han, was very informative and sought to give not only her insight on the best foods, but also a nice overview of the history of the different areas that we passed through, which made it as informative as it was interesting. We had a lot of great dishes (when they say arrive hungry, they really mean arrive HUNGRY), and I walked away feeling full of good food and good times.

Itinerary
Meet your adventurous foodie guide at Huangpi Road Station (Shanghai Metro Line 1), and venture to the residential area starting from the famous Huaihai Road. You will first go to the Dingtele restaurant (in Shanghai dialog means fantastic) hidden in local compound through the alleyways. Satisfy your appetite with mouthwatering noodles. Those aromatic flavors include sesame paste, scallion oil, braised meat sauce along with deep fried schnitzel, shredded shitake mushrooms and scallops.
Later, go for a stroll around 15 minutes along the main Changle Road, a street filled with not only locals but also new immigrants.
During noon time, you will see some office white collars enjoy their lunch here, some retired locals might prepare their cooking ingredients or play mahjong, and some young students share the snacks after schools. You will be surrounded in local atmosphere, and your native Shanghai guide will share some interesting local stories to you along the way.
Your last stop is to enjoy different types of wonton right by South Shan'xi road. Shanghai cuisine makes a clear distinction between small and large wonton. You can choose either the filling with shrimp or veggie with minced pork.

Had such a fun time on this tour during my 18 hour layover! Jim was a great tour guide and all the food and drinks were very well selected :) The tour was very informative and all the food kept me full for a whole day haha. It’s also a great way to meet fellow travellers !
This was an excellent food tour run by Jade who kept us all laughing, interested and exceptionally filled with delicious snacks. Do not eat anything prior to your tour!! This is Shanghai hospitality at its finest and you will be completely spoilt.
Show up hungry! TJ was great. She was super knowledgeable and made the evening fun for us. There is lots of food, and all of it was amazing.
Fantastic tour. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and considerate. We had a great array of local foods to try. Really liked walking through all the back streets and seeing the local markets. Would highly recommend if you're looking for authentic a Shanghai experience.
This was an amazing experience especially as it could be difficult to translate the menu. Patrick was super welcoming and friendly, I felt very comfortable with him during this tour. He was super knowledgeable and I tried some yummy local foods that I would not have known about otherwise. Thank you for a great tour!
Great food. Tour guide very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. She made the tour “fun”. The food did the rest.
This was a very fun walking tour with delicious food that focused on small local places for noodles, soup, fruit, tea and beer. Our guide Jade was excellent with great English and great stories about the city. And she made sure there was plenty of food for one vegan in our group and another who loved spicy meat!
Went on this trip with my brother and it was fantastic! Jim showed us some authentic hidden gems around Shanghai that we would never have known about or found otherwise. It was so good to have an informative guide who made sure to share his love of local cuisine and history. Great food, great beer, great sights, great guide! We booked for another tour with Jim the following night...
One of the highlights of my trip to Shanghai. I'd definitely recommend doing this tour early in your trip, as it's a great way to learn your way around downtown. Jim was fantastic. He taught me a lot about Chinese history and culture, was very fun and friendly, and knew took me to eat a lot of really delicious food. I'm recommending his tour to all my friends that are planning a visit.
We did the evening tour with Jim - he arrived with some tasty crispy omelettes and it just got better from there. We got to explore parts of Shanghai we wouldn't find by ourselves, and tried some great food and local beers. Jim was a great guide, really knowledgeable and friendly. This tour is a must!!
The food was fantastic, our guide was knowledgable and fun, the pace was perfect and the walk through the backstreets gave us a chance to see a unique side of Shanghai. We highly recommend this tour! We might even do it again in the near future.
I have been on countless food tours around the world. I have also, booked many Shanghai food tours with all the notable companies in Shanghai. However, I would definitely say this tour company and guide, was by far the best. I basically had the same food, as all previous tours in Shanghai (I enjoy the breakfast tours), but different locations within the city. However, what really made this tour my top 5 all time favorite food tours, was the guide. Anyone can tour around a city and eat the typical food of the given city/country. What makes a food tour or any tour memorable and a REAL "experience" is the guide. Jim, my guide fit that "experience". Jim spoke great English, was very informative regarding current affairs relating to China and the history of China, especially pertaining to the area in which the food tour was. I highly recommend this company!
From his warm greeting to the end of the day our tour guide Lu provided a wonderful was to experience a part of the city. The meeting place was easy to find and navigate to and from there we began a journey that included personal stories, history and thoughtful navigation. So many good experiences to share but my top two were the Scallion Noodle stop for the best pork and noodles and then an absolutely magical experience at a small Tea Shop. I wouldn't hesitate to book this tour, highly recommended. Thank you Lu!
Tour guide Lu was friendly and informative, and was able to design the tour to my tastes. Some great local food at places I never would have gone on my own. The soup dumplings were amazing! Great option for sampling local Shanghai cuisine!
Had a great tour guide in Lilac, she was very knowledgeable about the food and also gave a lot of insight into the area and Chinese culture. She also sent me a list and information about all the foods we ate and where. Unfortunately she's leaving, but if she's any indication of the other guides I would highly recommend them. Beware, you will eat a lot of food so come hungry!!!
Today was a fascinating tour. Ostensibly a noodle and dumpling tour, we received a great history lesson on the state of old vs new Shanghai. Our tour was in the old Shanghai neighbourhood network of alleyways called lilongs. In beijing they are called hutongs. This is inside what was once called the French Concession. It is literally right next to multi million dollar apartments and many of the existing lilongs are scheduled for demolition for new high rises. The people living in the lilongs will receive new residences somewhere in the province but will have no say as to the location. This will completely break up some families and friendships when the lilongs are gone! Very interesting. The food tour was broken up by a seminar on the art of tea and it was actually riveting. The food was plentiful and our guide (JIM WANG) was A+.
I did the afternoon tour with Lu. He was a fantastic tour guide. He knows the area and the history of the place. We went to some fantastic local places that you would walk passed if you didn't know what was there. The food was fantastic. I would recommend this for anyone who wants to understand the older parts of Shanghai better.
As a food lover from San Francisco, I decided a food tour was in order during my extended stay in Shanghai. Jim did an excellent job showing us the famous foods of Shanghai. We also visited an intimate tea shop. I will definitely visit the places again. Thanks again, Jim.
Booked this tour at the last minute on a Sunday while on business travel in Shanghai. Ended up being a private tour with Jim, who was a great tourguide! Was able to experience different tastes and see parts of the city that are off the beaten path. Highlight was spending time at a local tea house, Also enjoyed the soup dumplings. Heading to Chinatown in Philly this weekend to see if I can find anything that comes close to the tastes experienced in Shanghai.
Wonderful day with Patrick as perfect guide. Dumplings, noodles and Beijing Duck and Chinese Tea Ceremony - experiences you won't find alone
Unforgettable food tour with Jim Wang who took us around places we would otherwise never have found. Jim is a very nice and knowledgeable guide who we highly recommend. Anders o Carina
