This bike tour turned out to be the perfect way to start our first day in Shanghai. Q was an excellent guide who took care to give historical context and treat us to Michelin-rated dumplings. And a great way to beat jet lag!

Fantastic introduction to Shanghai- Charlie was excellent and informative guide Highly recommend
This exposed us to a wide area of Shanghai quickly and in a fun way. Perfect introduction to the city, with city history explained. An interesting selection of local cultural features. We did a private tour, so we asked about anything that we wanted to know—very educational. Shanghai has a very busy bike culture by the locals, so we mixed right in. That is, you don’t feel you are unnaturally riding bikes through city car traffic. But you do need to feel comfortable on a bike because there is a lot of action around you: cars, other bikes, electric scooters, pedestrians, etc. We ate at a very well known, to locals, dumpling restaurant that was excellent. Our guide was legitimate local, but spoke excellent English (and other languages). Definitely recommend, especially if you naturally like bike riding and being outside.
As a family of 5 we completed the cycling tour yesterday. Great fun and got to see the city from a different angle. Charlie was very knowledgeable and also accommodated two vegetarian teens for the snacks which were yum. She provided a scooter for one family member with an injury which was great fun (and slightly intimidating on occasion :)) to travel around like a local. I would highly recommend this tour to all visiting Shanghai.
Fantastic morning cycling round Shanghai with Charlie - the tour was a good length with plenty of time to explore and enjoy the different destinations - and we learnt so much along the way about Shanghai's history and culture - and finished off with some delicious dumplings :)
We had a great time exploring off-the-beaten path sights in Shanghai, including local life in the Fuxing Park, Buddhist temple, remains of the city wall and traditional pharmacy. Q was an amazing tour guide, providing thoughtful and informative responses and guiding us through the sites. We also had lunch at a Michelin starred eatery where we had the best traditional buns ever. Definitely recommend the tour as an interesting way to see Shanghai's unusual sights!
Fantastic morning bike tour through Shanghai with Charlie in late March. Perfect mix of interesting stops and moving through the city at a leisurely pace. Charlie was an attentive and knowledgeable guide, the bikes were easy to handle. We very much enjoyed the delicious lamb skewers from the small food stall at the end :-)
We had a fantastic cycle tour through Shanghai old city with Charlie. It was aa great way to see the city. We don’t have much time in Shanghai and this trip nailed it for us. Plus all the comms in advance were truly exceptional! Recommend absolutely 😊
Since it was the quiet season right before the new year, we essentially had a private tour of the best parts of Shanghai! Our tour guide Charlie was absolutely wonderful! She gave us tons of insightful info about the Buddhist temple we visited and about the history of Shanghai’s architecture. Charlie even customized our day and took us to see the shops by Yu Garden, which was the highlight of the day for sure! Throughout the day, we stopped for bao, scallion pancakes, soup dumplings, Shanghai’s special fried dumplings, and spicy Xinjiang lamb skewers. Incredible day! The perfect start to our trip! 10/10 recommend!
Charlie was a fantastic tour guide! I cannot recommend this tour enough! We biked, ate, and learnt so much about Shanghai. She was so kind to to ensure we got to have a tour that was specific to what we wanted to see and what we wanted to eat/drink, it was truly exactly what we wanted to do on our first day in Shanghai! Such a great start to the trip and we knocked out so many highlights of the city :) make sure you do this while you’re in Shanghai, you will not regret it!!
Our local guide Charlie drove us easely and safely through some of the old and new parts of the city. It's a perfect tour to see and learn more about Shanghai in just a couple of hours. If you want to have more background information about the history, cultural, reglions and development of Shanghai this tour is highly recommended.
We did a Shanghai bike tour last week and it was absolutely outstanding—truly one of the highlights of our entire trip. Our guide, Charlie, was exceptional. Their passion for Shanghai was contagious, and it made every stop along the way come alive. Charlie shared rich local perspectives, personal stories, and deep knowledge of the city’s history that you simply can’t get from a guidebook. We loved hearing firsthand insights while exploring the neighborhoods on two wheels. The ride itself was fun, safe, and such an energizing way to experience the city. If you’re visiting Shanghai, don’t miss this tour. It’s the perfect blend of culture, discovery, and genuine connection. Highly recommend!
Our cycling tour of Shanghai with Mr Q was fantastic! He’s knowledgeable, friendly, and full of great information. We explored hidden lanes, saw iconic sights, and stopped for some of the best Xiaolongbao we’ve had - a real highlight! The route was well planned, the bikes were great, and we always felt safe and relaxed. If you want to see Shanghai in a fun and authentic way, don’t miss this tour. Thanks, Mr Q, for a great day! 🚴♂️🥟
Charlie was a fantastic guide for our bike tour in Shanghai. We would highly recommend this experience to those looking for a tour of some of the most significant landmarks in Shanghai. The snacks that were included was more like a full meal for us!
Amazing tour. Charlie is super pleasant, and knowledgeable. We had our meal at a vegetarian rest close to the temple. Food as fantastic!
Top cycling tour for Shanghai, really enjoyed this tour, our guide 'Q' was very, very knowledgeable and gave us lots of interesting facts. Covered the key areas of the city and learnt so much history. Lunch included which was a bonus.
Charlie was the best guide we had! The tour was a great start to our trip with a lot of information and helpful tips by Charlie.
Had an amazing experience with Charlie, she was very enthousiastic, open and spoke perfect English! She told us all about the history of the city, showed us many beautiful buildings and places and introduced us to some top notch ice cream and pan fried pork dumplings which we devoured happily. Thanks again Charlie!
Mr. Qu was a great tour guide. He was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions. He was very patient with us and would definitely recommend him. He was very prepared, supplied water (it was hot), and a portable fan for everyone. Thank you for making it a memorable experience.
Our guide, Charlie, made this a fun experience! We first visited the garden in the French Concession and were invited to play Diablo with the locals! A very fun and educational experience! Harder than it looks! We stopped at landmarks along the way, visited a beautiful temple and the oldest traditional pharmacy in Shanghai. Then a lunch of delicious dumplings and finally a return to the starting point! It was incredibly hot the day we went but still fun and educational! Dodging the traffic on the busy streets meant staying aware but I would not have missed this great experience!!
This was an excellent bike tour - my wife and I both really enjoyed it. Charlie did a great job guiding us around, helped me practice my Chinese, and even found some vegetarian food for me. Shanghai is an excellent city to tour by bike. We loved our experience with Culture Shock.
Charlie was a great guide. We enjoyed the bike tour. It's not a lot km on the bike, so no problem at all that it wasn't an e-bike. Great stops on the way, my favourite was Fuxing park with all the pensionadas enjoying their club activities.
Hvar a very good and pleasant gaid who told about everything we saw. Very easy to talk to. Hvar leisurely bike pace, oh wonderful things we saw.
It was a fun relaxed biketour. Thanks for sharing some interesting history and stories. And really enjoyed fuxing parc blending with the kind locals. Loved the soup dumplings.
Q is a great guide. We learned about Chinese culture, religions, customs, history in an entertaining way. At the French Park we saw people dancing, chatting and laughing, Saxophon playing, Tai Chi and Qi Gong practicing. From the French quarter to the Chinese quarter: In a Buddhist temple Q explained the customs and meanings of signs. We cycle quickly through all the mopeds, cars and cyclists...fun! We stop shortly at Yu Garden on top, a tourist spot around a Taotic temple and a garden. Selfie with the three of us in front of an old tea house and on to a shop with traditional Chinese medicines. Roots, bones, mushrooms, swallow slime, highest quality, impressing! We cycle to the American and British quarters for the view of the financial centre and Pudong. Q ate dumplings with us in a Chinese restaurant (fried crispy on the bottom, soft on the top) and noodles...yummy! Then we are already 4.5 hours on the road and it is time to go back. We get a small gift/brochure with helpful tips...a great way to start our first Shanghai weekend! Thanks a lot, CultureShock-team!
Fantastic 4 hour tour that flew by. Charlie's knowledge was incredible and took us to some places we would never of tried on our own. Just the 4 of us so a lovely private tour. Would strongly recommend taking this experience with Culture Shock to see alot of Shanghai in a short time.
Wow, what an incredible bike tour I had with Charlie from Culture Shock in Shanghai! As a newbie to China, every moment was a delightful "culture shock" filled with fascinating history and jaw-dropping riverfront views. Charlie even took us to a serene Buddhist temple, adding a touch of spirituality to our ride. And let's talk about those fried dumplings—absolutely mind-blowing! Despite the city hustle, Charlie made sure we zipped through crowded areas safely and smoothly. Charlie, you're a star! Thanks for making this tour a blast. It's an easy 5-star rating from me. I got a great workout, but more importantly, I came away with a deeper love and understanding of Chinese culture. Cheers to Culture Shock for an adventure I won't forget!
Fun cycling morning exploring Shanghai. Exploring the city and ended with some local food. Can absolutely recommend Culture Shock Tours.
Can't recommend this highly enough. Our guide Q spoke flawless English, was friendly, informative. Perfect way to get a feel for the history of the French and International consessions in Shanghai, as well as some local culture (the park was fascinating) and the local dumpling speciality (try not to squirt Q with the dumpling juice). Cycling is ubiquitous in Shanghai and there are dedicated lanes everywhere, but you do need to be paying attention at times. At the end would have happily jumped on the bike and done it again.
I recommand for visiting Shanghaï. It was a really good moment with a very Nice and interested guide. Thanks for this moments
We had a fantastic day, thanks to our guide Q! The food was great and his knowledge of the city is vast. Can speak English, Spanish and French with great ease!! The tour was perfect for us!!
Charlie was a great tour guide and we had a leisurely ride across some really interesting sights. I won’t spoil it for everyone, but the history is fascinating.
What a great experience - would absolutely recommend it! Our guide, Charlie, was super - so enthusiastic, thoughtful, knowledgeable and just great fun to spend time with. My wife and I cycle a lot, but whether you do the same or never get on a bike, rest assured Charlie will look after you and ensure you have a fabulous time and a great close up experience of Shanghai.
An amazing way to see Shanghai! Charlie brought me to lots of amazing places I never would have found by myself; Fuxing Gardens, a secret buddhist temple, beautiful Art Deco buildings. Had some delicious food and boba tea along the way - and Charlie adapted everything to my request for vegetarian food. Cycling was easy and very straightforward. Highly recommend!
Great Bicycle Tour through Shanghai. I have been several times to Shanghai but this time I enjoyed it the most because we got to know the city from another point of view: on a bike with a wonderful tour guide! We got so much information about the city and we did a lot of nice stops ( French concession, art deco street, old Shanghai etc ) and in the end we had a typical snack together! I’d definitely recommend the tour to everybody because it is not exhausting at all but it’s a very nice possibility to get to know the city better
Q was a great tour guide. Very informative and easy going. Explained things in 2 languages and in great detail. Will do the night tour next visit to Shanghai
Charlie provided an unforgettable half-day bike tour through old town Shanghai. Her expertise and enthusiasm made the adventure both informative and exhilarating. Exploring the city by bike offered a unique perspective, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the vibrant culture and history of Shanghai. Charlie's guidance ensured a seamless experience, making it a highlight of our trip. Highly recommended for anyone seeking an authentic way to discover the heart of Shanghai.
It was a very impressive journée and it was very well organized. Thank you a lot for the photos taken. The lunch was ALDI a good experience.
We arranged a personalized bike tour with this agency via our hotel. It was beyond amazing! Charlie was an exceptional host, guiding us through the city, hitting all the major sights of Shanghai, and taking us to hidden gems we wouldn't have found on our own. She was incredibly kind, open, and engaged, chatting with us about everything under the sun. What we hoped would be a great guide turned into finding a true friend. And to top it off, she generously spent an extra hour with us at no additional cost. Don't miss out on this incredible tour if you want to experience the real Shanghai through a local's eyes.
Charly is great guide, her English is fluent, we loved all the background information about the city, the buildings and the people she shared with us along the way. The bikes were new and very comfortable, even after 4 hours biking! We will most definitely go back for another tour to discover a different part of the city!
Charlie was a great guide who brought Shanghai to life with historical facts and pictures. Her descriptions were detailed and knowledgeable and she was helpful beyond just the tour in assisting me to get the rental bikes to work! The snack stop was delicious and quite traditional Shanghaise fare.
Wonderful experience biking in Shanghai with friends and discovering Chinese culture and traditions but also French and Western influences through Architecture. Our Guide was very kind and interesting and the food absolutely delicious. Thanks a lot
Memorable tour immersing us the local culture. Charlie was a fabulous guide with superb English. This was the highlight of our stay in Shanghai.
A truly authentic Shanghai experience, enhanced by an enthusiastic knowledgeable guide, who is a life-time resident. Cycling through the streets, sampling local food outlet fare, stopping at interesting historic spots was a really fun educational experience. I would do it again!
We had an amazing fun tour. We tried many local foods and could experience real Chinese food. The tour guides were very experienced and gave a lot of information about the areas we went and the food we tasted. Going by bike was perfect and we always felt safe with our guides.
Great tour with Q as very experienced. I can recommend the tour of you like cycyling, like to the see Shanghai from a different angel and history.
100% value for money. Very enjoyable and Charlie is so knowledgeable and friendly. She gives you an insight into modern life in Shanghai. Imo it’s the only way to see and gain an understanding of this city! Would highly recommend.
Very well organized tour which gives a nice view about the city of Shanghai. The local food we got was delicious and the guide was very professional and well organized which speaks fluent English. Highly reccomanded and will definitly do it again! Best regards, Ruud
We had a wonderful experience with Charlie yesterday! While in town on business we wanted to see some of Shanghai and I'm so glad we found Culture Shock Tours. We covered alot of ground and Charlies was a pleasure to spend the morning with, sharing lots of history of Shanghai. Shanghai is a very bike friendly city and we felt completely safe biking on the city roads. The food stop towards the end of our tour was delicious! For those interested we biked approx 12km over 4-5 hours with many stops. Mostly flat riding so easy to do, even if you are not used to riding a bike often. The bikes themselves were very comfortable. I will be recommending to all my friends who visit in Shanghai - an excellent morning! Hope to return and do the bike and brunch tour next time. Thank you so much!
My wife went on a half day adventure with Q. His grasp on the culture and history was truly amazing. We cover a large swath of Shanghai from the French quarters to Buddhist temples. We were also treated to a classic Shanghai noodle and dumpling dish. I was unsure about the directions to the meeting place but Charlie was very instructive and clear regarding how to get there. She decrease the angst and was very reassuring. Two thumbs up, and can't wait to see you guys in our next trip to Shanghai.
