I did the Shanghai night food tour on 10/19 with three relatives. Our guide, Lee, was really excellent. He is a warm, energetic presenter of regional Chinese cuisines who is really good at creating a group atmosphere. I think you would feel comfortable going on this tour if you were a solo traveler. We went to six different restaurants (Yunnanese, Szechuan, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and 2x NW Chinese, I believe) and tried a range of alcohols (baiju, yellow liquor, plum wine, beer, etc.). One participant was a vegetarian and Lee was able to order so that she was able to try a wide range of items. Overall, it is a pricier tour but I thought it was absolutely worth the money.

Itinerary
As the financial capital of China, Shanghai attracts millions of migrants who bring their local culinary traditions and ingredients with them. As the sun sets, join UnTour Food Tours as we explore the best local and regional cuisines the city has to offer, paired with local beers, spirits (or soft drinks) in a centrally-located, authentic residential neighborhood. Taste local dishes from the Shanghai Jiangnan area, as well as southern and northwest China & Sichuan. Explore just how different regional Chinese foods can be on this evening Shanghai food tour!
Explore the neighborhood just north of the famous Nanjing Road. Known for its colonial history during the Republic of China, this area of Shanghai was home to some of the city's most famous locals and expats during the 1920s and 1930s.
End your tour a stone's throw from historic Jing'an Temple. You can hop on the subway from there, or explore the bars in the neighborhood. Your guide will be happy to give you recommendations!

Yanny was very genuine, friendly and fun. She paid great attention to detail and saw to it that the tour was a wonderful curated experience - seven local spots in one night, from soup dumplings to lamb skewers, places I'd never have found on my own. Highly recommend.
This tour was excellent. The food was delicious and our guide did a great job educating us on history and local customs. The stops were just the right amount of off the beaten path. The company was great. Yanny was a fabulous guide. She was friendly, knowledge, and prepared. Everything ran smoothly.
Highly recommended! Like the best type of food tour, it was fun, educational and delicious. A excellent introduction to the various cuisines of China. Yanny was a superb host, well-organized, knowledgeable and friendly
We had an amazing time with Hope! It was some of the best food we had in our whole time in Shanghai! More than enough food, different tastes and cuisines included, all really really good. So glad we took this tour. Got to meet some nice people in our group as well. Well worth the money.
We took the tour the first night of our Shanghai visit, which made us so much more brave to go on and order food for the rest of our trip. The guide was sociable and knowledgeable with information and stories about the food and the beverages. During the night we learnt a lot about different regions' foods. We made five and a half stops (the half was more of a snack). Nice to try food together in a group. With a smile on our faces we said goodbye for the night.
Our food tour through Shanghai with Yanny was absolutely fantastic. If you're looking for an authentic, delicious, and memorable culinary adventure, you will love it. We sampled an incredible variety of dishes, including the delicious pineapple bun, classic soup dumplings and spicy mapo tofu. Our guide flawlessly navigated us from classics like savory Cantonese-style roast meats to bold street food - including crickets. The juicy lamb skewers were a crowd-pleaser, paired perfectly with soft and warm scallion pancakes. Awesome experience. Highly recommended!
Our food tour with Yanny was the highlight of my first visit to Shanghai. From start to finish, she showed a genuine passion for Chinese provincial food culture. The standout moments for me were the lamb kebabs, combined with a great local beer. Not to be outdone by trying spiced Locusts for the first time. Places and dishes I would never have been brave enough to try solo. While I am sincerely full after the trip, I would definitely go again! And 1000% recommend to anyone.
I did this tour this evening, and LOVED it! Yanny was amazing - so knowledgeable and fun, and made the tour interesting and relaxed, whilst making sure we had a great time. I was so full by the end, and we left so much food behind!! Would recommend this to anyone, such a great way to explore Shanghai.
My friend and I had a wonderful night exploring food with Janne! We wanted foods more off the beaten path, especially since we're fans of Chinese cuisine, and this definitely satisfied that want. Janne was a really kind and knowledgable guide.
Really enjoyed this food tour! I loved the flow of the evening and how each stop had its own food and drink pairing. It was a fun way to get a taste of different parts of China and the variety of regional cuisines, without feeling rushed. Janne was an amazing guide and made us feel welcome right from the start. She gave us great introductions at each stop, which made the food much more interesting, and she answered all of our questions about the food, Chinese culture, and life in Shanghai. A great evening of eating, drinking, and learning. I’d definitely recommend it if you want to experience a different side of Shanghai through its food.
My teenage son and I did three of the UnTour food tours - Shanghai dinner, Shanghai breakfast, and Beijing dinner. We enjoyed all three. Each was different. We would recommend each of them. The guides were good and the food they curated was tasty and interesting.
This is an absolute must, we had such a great time eating the best authentic food. Thank you Lee for creating and unforgettable experience you were the best!
Li was an excellent tour guide. He took the time to talk to us and getting to know each of us personally. It was three hours of pure fun, exploration and cultural experience for my family. The most impressive thing is Li got my my daughter who is typically a picky eater to open up and try out the various cuisine including delicacy such as grasshopper! We had a memorable night and we will carry this memory for a long time. We can’t wait to visit your hometown. Thank you Li!!!
It was just my family and I with a tour guide and always a little awkward without others. The restaurants selected were diverse and excellent. Lots of choice and generous amounts everywhere and beer and baiju as well. The walking helped process all the food and we ended with Szechuan a few minutes late (..that was me) because we had some brilliant street food "snack". Places were small, curated and good value for what we received. And given the area and the familiarity with it, this group is well recommended.
Tour was fantastic! Hope was a great tour guide. It was very easy to communicate with the staff during the visit. It felt like a friends’ night out.
We were disappointed with the tour. Living already in Asia, it was not suitable for us. Not much was explained during the tour apart the first stop which some quick explanations. We were expecting to learn more about the food and also by extension about Shanghai. But also expected more street food vibe. You are seated in restaurants each time. Which is not an issue per se, but again Shanghai offers so many amazing street food that can be overwhelming for visitors to know where to look. Having a guide to show and share about street food would have been great - which I believe is more the vibe of the breakfast one. We should have looked into more details when booking. But considering little guide sharing, the price is too high as Shanghai offers really cheap food.
Yanny was amazing and so was the food! 10/10 would highly recommend to anyone — solo travelers, couples or friends — looking to eat authentic Chinese food
Had a lovely tour with Yanny. Went to 6 different restaurants with different cuisines and Yanna gave a lot of extra information about China and the regions the dishes are from. Would recommend this for everyone who is traveling to Shanghai for the first time.
Great experience with lots of different, tasty and interesting food. Li was amazing tour guide, making it fun and interactive. He had lots of knowledge about the good we were eating. Would definitely recommend and would do another food tour with UnTour.
A great way to explore Chinese cuisine. We loved the trip through different regions and flavours. My partner was well accommodated with vegetarian food. Janne was a great guide and we appreciated her insight and tips for the rest of our trip.
What a fantastic tour through Shanghai and China’s food scene! I learned so much and tried some foods I’d never have dared on my own but the tour also suited the less adventurous eater in our family. Janne was exceptional ambassador and guide. Come hungry and pace yourself because there is so much to try!
This was one of the best food tours I’ve ever experienced. Our tour guide, Li, was incredibly knowledgable about the food we were eating, and did a great job in making sure everyone on the trip was comfortable and having a good time. What I liked best about this tour was that while it was a Shanghai food tour, we still were able to try out cuisines from different regions of China. Whether you’re a solo traveler or with a large group, young or old, this is a food experience to remember for a lifetime!
We had a great experience with Janne. She took us to amazing places and we got a great understanding of shanghainese food and culture. Highly recommended!
This was one of the best food tours I've ever done. Guide Li was a mine of information about the origins of the food - and we sampled an amazing range of cuisine from all around China. It really opened my eyes to a whole new experience of food!
We had Janne as our tour guide and she was incredible. Our family of four loved this tour. The food was delicious and plentiful. We had six different stops and each stop included food from a different part of China. The tour also included some alcohol. Our only criticism was that my husband said he would have enjoyed a beer earlier in the tour, rather than at our last two stops when we were already so full. Everything else was perfect and I highly recommend this tour.
Great tour! A fantastic arrsy of local food in unassuming eateries we would never have found ourselves representing several Chinese regional cuisines. Janne was knowledge and lovely company. The perfect way to get stuck in to Shanghai.
Great tour for getting a taste of many of China's cuisines. Restaurants were all very good. Wish there was more sightseeing in between stops, but still a very nice experience. Hope was a great tour guide.
Li was very informative and fun to talk to. I learned a lot about Chinese food from different regions. With big portions of good food at each stop, I was really full at the end of the tour.
It was a fun food tour with interesting food. We were met outside of the metro station by Li. Li was an excellent host, giving us lots of interesting facts about the locations we went to and the food we were eating. We had a fun time trying to guess where Li originally came from. The walk two the eating locations were all quite close, so ok for lots of people. Our party consisted of only three guests. If you are in Shanghai and are looking for a food tour, try this one.
Six stops for a wonderful variety of regional food and drink. A fun evening with Lee to guide us through our food journey.
This was a really great tour. The food and drink were amazing. Our host Li made it a great night. But be prepared to eat things that might push you out of your comfort zone.
I had a great time on this food tour led by Topher. He was very knowledgeable about everything we tried and the evening was well organized so that we were able to transition easily from one place to the next. Topher did a great job getting everyone to socialize and it was a fun group. I would strongly recommend this tour!
My daughter and I did the night food tour with Hope and had a great experience. Hope was a terrific guide to Shanghai's food scene, and we really enjoyed getting the chance to taste multiple cuisines at several different restaurants. The only problem was that we were completely stuffed by the end! Loved UnTour so much that we've booked another tour for Beijing when we're there.
I love food and love trying new things! This tour did not disappoint at all! Not only did I get to try everything from locusts to rice wine, but our guide gave us the history, ingredients, and context for everything we ate. It was a lot of fun!
Had a great tour with Li and a half dozen other travelers, it was just the right number of people to make it sociable and personable without feeling crowded, and there was just the right amount of walking as well — the three hours flew by and everyone wanted to stay for longer at the final restaurant, and the nice thing is that we were allowed to! Given the array of food and the experience, the price is incredibly reasonable as well. I would have been happy to pay more, but don't tell them that!
Great tour, Hope was the perfect tour guide, showed us a lot different restaurants and kind of kitchens and grave us many back ground information. Honestly one of the best tours i have done so far.
Li was a fantastic guide! The restaurants we went to were all delicious! The soup dumplings in particular were a highlight. When I return to Shanghai I’ll be doing this tour again!
Perfect Tour. Got try lots of different foods and drinks, including many information about the culture. Recommended!
Li was a fabulous guide! The places we went to eat were all delicious! Lil’s knowledge of the food and history was excellent. A definite must do tour when in Shanghai!
My wife and I had such a lovely time, hosted by the warm, friendly, informed and funny Li! Li has bags of personality and charming wit, making the food tour as engaging as possible, not only describing to us all the delicious foods we ate (including deep fried locusts with beer, fantastic soup dumplings, and delicious BBQ lamb, Cantonese siu pork and duck, to name a few!) but teaching us all about Chinese food culture. We have been on many food tours in Asia and this was possibly the best one! We could not recommend this tour enough! Thank you Li.
Fun tour - great food. Janne was a great and knowledgeable host. One thing to be aware of (this wasn’t entirely clear from the tour description) - we sampled food from many of different regions of China, with only one local (Shanghainese) food stop. This did not detract at all from the experience as the food was all great.
Our arrival in China was delayed and so we basically cleared customs and went straight on this tour and I am so glad we did. It was worth every cent. Li our guide took us to several restaurants and food stalls where we tasted food from various regions. Li explained the ingredients in each dish and the stories behind some of them. He also made the tour great fun with his quizzez and good sense of humour. At the end of the tour I couldnt eat or drink another thing. Going on the tour helped me pick out some delicious meals during the rest of my stay and be a little more adventurous with what I tried. I particularly recommend the tour if you, like me, are a bit hesitant to try new dishes
Highly recommend. We had a great time with Janne, she's super friendly and took good care of us. The food was delicious, we tried various dishes from different parts of China. Interesting and immersive experience
Janne was our host, who was super knowledgable and personable. The restaurant selection was varied and we were taken on a tour through China in flavours and cooking styles that touched on various regions, all within walking distance. I tried soup dumplings for the first time, that were incredible. So light, fluffy and rich in flavour! Each stop showcased fantastic food options and we ate so many different dishes over the course of the tour!
Great experience, lots of different cuisines and cultural insights. Our guide was very knowledgeable and also we had good company on the tour!
Highly recommended must do tour! Hope was a fantastic tour guide and explained many cultural and other interesting facts along the way. I am vegetarian and ate like a king and I would never have found this food on my own. Thanks Hope!
Hope was a lovely guide. Happy, enthusiastic and always in for a good conversation. The food was great and varied, and so were the drinks. I only missed eating in a traditional home (which was part of the Beijing UNfood tour). But would certainly recommend it
Couldn't have asked for a better food tour! Li was engaging, enthusiastic, and super friendly. Perfect combination of conversation, food, drink, and background. Couldn't recommend enough!
This tour was an awesome way to taste food from across China, from the familiar- meat skewers and roast duck- to the first-time- fried locusts and preserved eggs- all sooo good! The tour was well run & offered a wide variety of food and drink. Hope was an excellent tour guide- coordinating every stop and answering our questions. Great way to experience Shanghai and try foods I would have never known how to order. Highly recommend. Bring your appetite!
