The food tour itinerary is just perfect and Tony is such a good tour guide. I had great fun and eat.

Itinerary
In 1936, half of Shanghai was controlled by foreign powers. For decades, its had a negative birth rate and millions of immigrants, meaning the inheritance of the true cuisine of old Shanghai is limited to select insiders. On this tour, you’ll try at least 10 dishes on a journey through the clandestine cuisine of old-Shanghai, hiding in plain sight in the French Concession.
Xiaolongbao (local for soup dumplings) are Shanghai’s most famous claim to fame, but do you know how to tell the good from the great? We’ll let you know at our favorite local dumpling joint that can compete with the touristy Michelin recommended restaurants.
Scallion noodles, dumplings with sesame sauce, local curry, and more! Don’t forget to check out the kitchen on your way in, the labor intensive pan-fried-bun making process has been selected as Local Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Two words: Pork Belly. Shanghai’s favorite dish takes an entire day to prepare, and for a good reason. Enjoy this plus other “only in Shanghai” dishes that celebrate quality ingredients with fresh preparation.
Driven by a passion for dessert and community spirit, the Shanghainese owner of this cozy shop caters to the local neighborhood, crafting fresh desserts without pre-made shortcuts. Fresh mango atop chilled sago cream with a dash of pomelo…we’re drooling already!
End the night with a locally made craft beer and enjoy the new modern feel Shanghai is known for around the world. The brewery is 10-minute walk away from South Shaanxi Road Subway Station.

Tony was a great tour guide. He was able to answer all of our food questions and made for great company. Would recommend this tour to anyone coming to Shanghai.
Emma was incredible! She explained the history and cultural significance of our food-even going so far to show us the proper way to eat a soup dumpling. She was welcoming to my 16 year old son-who loves food. I appreciated her insights-I would book again.
I can’t say enough about how great this food tour was! We tasted so many different dishes and learned so much about the local cuisine, all of it very tasty. Tony was a great guide, sharing his local knowledge and making us all feel comfortable, walking us through this lovely area of Shanghai. It was a great value for the price. We hope to do more Lost Plate tours in the future.
This was such a fantastic experience with so many different flavors and textures. We learned so much about the food and Tony was so knowledgeable insightful. I would highly recommend this experience.
We did the tour in Beijing a couple of years ago and it blew us away, however, we left the Shanghai one feeling a little disappointed. 1. There was no ‘unlimited beer’ - we were only offered one each at the start and it was luke-warm. The group were quite confused at this. My wife doesn’t drink beer and wasn’t offered an alternative. This was the same when we went for a craft beer at the end of the night, the only alternative was fizzy water. 2. We didn’t learn a huge amount about the surrounding area we were visiting. We’d occasionally stop at random points and told a little about what it was, but when we asked more questions, the guide wasn’t really sure of the answers. 3. We didn’t really eat as much as the one in Beijing, we remembered leaving that completely stuffed. This time, it felt more ‘sampling dishes’ rather than your own portions. So for example, as there were 5 of us, the dumpling portion came out as 6 as standard, so we only got one each. We had to share a standard portion of noodles etc. 4. I think the tour cost about £60pp, but we probably only ate about £15pp worth of food. I completely understand that you are paying for the experience, knowledge and recommendations, but we’re not sure the cost was justified on this occasion. A real shame because the Beijing tour was superb, we’re booked in for some others whilst we’re exploring China, so we’re hoping those tours are a little better. We saved long and hard for this trip with Lost Plate Food Tours being the priciest experience and we didn’t leave this full of food or culture. We’ll see how the next one goes, it will be sad if it’s another watered down experience again.
This was a fantastic food tour in Shanghai. Emma(our tour guide) was great and brought us to some pretty great places. We find food tours a great way to get introduced at new places we visit. We would highly recommend this tour
Emma was an incredible tour guide and took us to a lot of great places. She was very informative on the French quarter as well as any other questions I had on China!
We had a great time! I liked that our guide Emma actively got in touch before the tour to text the meeting point and time as a reminder. It helps as a traveler to look forward to the experience. The group size was nice and Emma was very outgoing, answering our questions and explaining about the city and the food. We loved all the food stops and it's always great to be able to try different local dishes without the hussle of researching by yourself every single day :) We liked the tour a lot, so we proceeded to book another food tour via lost plate in the next city we visited
Great food, great guide (Shirley), great tour. Would recommend.
Tony was an excellent guide. We went to places that we would never have ventured and tried foods we had never sampled - all delicious. Tony was informative and kept us moving with a well earned beer to round up the evening. Highly recommend this trip. You will definitely not leave hungry!
really loved our evening with Shirley. She gave us a wonderful experience seeing lots of different places and dishes. She was able to explain the dishes and the restaurants and created a wonderful evening for us.
A really enjoyable experience and our guide, Emma, was lovely, provided great communication and was very informative learning some history of the area as well as the food. The food itself was delicious and more than enough!
The start was a little shaky with ‘Get Your Guide’ sending me to the wrong location however Emma the tour guide quickly sorted it out and we were away. The food is tasty, diverse and plentiful; there’s no way I would have eaten that variety of food for my short stay under my own steam. Emma was on point with the history of each dish and also very inclusive.
I would recommend the plate tour if you are up for trying local foods. Jiachen was our guide and did a great job of explaining the dishes, taking us to 5 different places and giving great insight to local life and food. We ate fantastic food in lovely local restaurants. A fabulous experience.
Very goog guide, speaking excellent English.
Emma was the perfect guide and we had a great time trying all the good. A great activity to get introduced to the city.
Our guide was Weijia, who will regale you with tales in her British accent. All of the selections and restaurants were awesome and a great representation of local food done well. Our favorite were the soup dumplings. After this. This were all we ate for lunch and dinner. There was quite a bit of walking but the neighborhoods and streets were safe and interesting. We were stuffed and tired when the tour ended. And, we were enlightened about the culture of lovely China. This was our second Lost Plate tour as we enjoyed the one on Beijing so much!
Guide was amazing and did was some of the best we had in China. Can strongly recommend.
Weijia was fantastic, so welcoming and friendly. She was very inclusive and informative, gave a great insight into Chinese eating and the foods available. She pointed out different cultural aspects as well as we wandered along, leading the group at a very nice pace. This was our second tour with her and we would do more!! We will be back.
We had an amazing time on our food tour through Shanghai! Our tour guide was Emma and she did a fantastic job of guiding us through the city and sharing all her knowledge. Would book again in a heartbeat!
Went for night food tour with our guide emma. The food was nicely recommended. I liked the shen jian bao stop. Would be good if tour can be done in day time so we can see the place better when introductions are done. Could introduce more about the history of the place as we walked from one location to another. The tour group of 8pax is a good size so we could try different food.- however, would be good to be more food variety like shanghai Appetisers or more local desserts etc. At the last stop, the bar was too small for 8 pax as well.
My daughters (10 and 12) and I really enjoyed the lost plate tour with our guide Emma! Even though we live in China, it was very enriching to experience Shanghai from local perspective. We are looking forward to joining more tours that they offer.
Joy, our tour guide was lovely. The food was good and we really enjoyed the whole experience. In particular, the dumplings at the first stop were fabulous. We had a great time with the group, everyone was so friendly and also gave us tips for the rest of our travels. A well organised tour by Lost Plate. We’re looking forward to our next one!
This was a WONDERFUL experience. The tour guides were EXCEPTIONAL and the food was plentiful and delicious. I don't eat red meat nor pork and adequate provisions were made for me. Walking helped manage the guilt of eating so much.
Our guide Joy was very pleasant company. We were a group of 7 people and we enjoyed their company. The food in each location was fabulous. It was such a varied selection so we got to try lots of different dishes. The final stop at the Brewery was interesting as we don’t drink beer, but just loved the sea salt and lychee cider, it was great. Thank you for providing such a wonderful evening
What a fabulous night.. Max was an excellent guide, we enjoyed his knowledge of his home city, Shanghai. The food on the tour was all fantastic. We definitely had plenty to eat, and would recommend doing the tour.. Finishing was a craft beer 🍺 was a lovely way to end the night.
We absolutely loved our time with Max! The food was incredible, and he led us to authentic, hidden gems we’d never have discovered ourselves. On top of that, his storytelling and historical knowledge about the French Concession made the whole evening both fun and meaningful.
Food is amazing and our tour guide Joy is AMAZING!
Espectacular food tour en Shanghai. Andice was an amazing host and guide taking always care of us and introducing us to the Shanghaneise cuisine. We enjoyed all the stops with plenty of opto s at esch l e and she gave us details of how each dish was prepared.
Easy to find the meeting point ( we got a Didi). Five stops, three savoury and one a pudding and the last a bar. We are vegan and we’re well catered for . We couldn’t finish lots of our plates as there was so much. It was very authentic and was a good night and we enjoyed chatting with every else on the tour
Cathy was a great guide. She was friendly and knowledgeable. The food was also phenomenal. We went into restaurants I never would have wandered into—I truly do feel like a local. Highly recommended!
Great experience trying different food in the French Concession. Max were a great guide with good loval knowledge. The mango dessert was amazing!
It was a great 3.5 hours of getting a broad view of Shanghai cuisine within a single night. You definitely have to come hungry, as there was lots of plates to experience at 5 locations. The guide Max was also sharing the history and culture of the food and town as we walked, giving a great background for the meals.
Max was an excellent guide of the food and the neighborhood. This was my first trip to China and because of the language barrier, and because it was a last minute work trip, I was having trouble finding food that I liked. So it was great to have a friendly local guide. He took us on a pleasant walk through the neighborhood and weaved in the history of the neighborhood and the country with humor.
The Tour with Andice was amazing and I will definitely book more tours within Asia!
A perfect way to start our time in Shanghai! Emma was a great host and accommodated us by having vegetarian options at every stop.
Highly recommended tour, you will discover hidden places not marked on the guides where you can eat incredible food!
If you want to discover real local food instead of tourist spots, I highly recommend this tour. Every stop was unique, the food was delicious, and our guide shared interesting stories about each dish and the local culture. Everything was well organized, and I got to try foods I would never have found on my own. It was one of the best food experiences I've had in China. Definitely worth it!
Our guide, Joy was excellent. Very knowledgeable about the neighborhoods of Shanghai and the food. The food was incredible! The best soup dumplings snd pan fried buns I have ever had anywhere. All of the restaurants we went to were unassuming neighborhood establishments — nothing fancy just great local food. I highly recommend this tour.
We went as a family to do this food tour. It was a really good introduction to the foods of Shanghai. We got to try things that we may have missed on our own. Each restaurant we went to served up very good quality food. Our tour guide Emma was great, excellent English, friendly, and was really comprehensive in explaining everything to us. I would certainly consider doing one of their other tours if I was in a new city.
Emma was the best of the guides we had in China, very kind knowledgeable and helpful. The food was very diverse and a selection of very good dishes to try
A delightful experience meandering through this eclectic area of Shanghai whilst enjoying fabulous local cuisine and a beer! Amber our guide was terrific in explaining the history of this savvy area. You certainly get your steps up! It’s a must if you can…
So much delicious food. The food was great with lots of information about the food and area we walked around
Amazing food! Make sure you arrive hungry as there’s lots of it to enjoy! The soup dumplings were to die for and we got to try a large range of dishes and a refreshing dessert. Andice was an excellent guide very knowledgable and friendly
We had a wonderful time walking around Shanghai with our group. Maxsi was a fantastic guide, supplied us with so much information about Shanghai and the food that we were eating!
The food was quite good, the guide (Emma) was great. I lived in china before and can speak Chinese so I didn't super 'need' the tour. But it was still convenient to eat all the local Shanghai food in an evening and have someone else organize/plan it.
Absolutely loved our food tour through Shanghai's French Concession. Food was delicious and the other people on the tour so fun.
Sylvia was an attentive and lovely guide. We enjoyed our tour and the food!
Awesome night! Sue was the best. Highly recommend. Great food and great times.
