Great experience with Ellen. She showed us a good variety of sites and a hood meal at the end. Bikes were in good shape.

Our guide, Ellen, was very good and would recommend - we really enjoyed the tour- once it finally started. The company had missed the booking from Viator and did not turn up at the Garden Hotel meeting point. Kindly the concierge at the hotel called the them (number on Viator booking info) and I was able to tell them that we need the tour asap as had limited time in Shanghai. We had to wait 30-40mins for the guide to arrive so in total an hour late staring. Suggest double checking with operator day before!!
Biking around Shanghai is pretty easy since it’s not at all hilly. But it does take some getting used to navigating around cars and e-bikes. It was a nice way to see the city and learn a bit about it.
Nice casual ride around the city. We enjoyed the experience . Had a great meal included and stopped at some interesting places.
Good trip, well selected and reasonably quiet streets for views, well maintained bikes. Certainly a nice experience and perfect weather for it (early November). Food was average. Guide had shallow knowledge and little love of Shanghai, but competently guided us through the sights and streets including some scary (to us) intersections. We saw a couple of lovely shopping areas: one old and one very new; I wished I could spend longer hanging out there. A better trip would have had the same time on the road, skipped the random meal, had a little more history, and been less rushed in the market (- I'm not a shopper, but it was interesting.) But, I think the tour has probably been designed to fit a particular time / marketing profile so maybe this can't be helped.
From the start of our tour meeting Ellen, heading over to our bikes we set off after Ellen had showed and told us her signs for biking...Ellen guided us safely through the streets of Shanghai along with many interesting and fun stops. We were treated by Ellen with a local freshly cooked snack and finished our ride with a local lunch. We highly recommend this tour and Ellen as your guide.
Top class guide (Ellen). Nice to experience things that were less touristy! Really interesting few hours and good value
The tour guide was very friendly and it was definitely nice to have a peaceful morning ride, but I found the expertise to be kind of a waste of money and time. If you're at all comfortable with city biking, I recommend using the (very cheap) bikeshares around town and wandering on your own. - Tour guide was a young woman fresh out of college, and understandably didn't have much in terms of local recommendations. - Really surface level information about the places we saw. - The local food was one stop in the beginning to have soup dumplings. The food was good but I was expecting more than that.
Ellen and Anne were exceptional bike tour guides. We had so much fun riding through the city. Our teenager boys loved it. The food stops were delicious. Thank you for making our trip really special.
Such a fun and informative tour. Ellen was a wonderful guide and even though it was a rainy day, it was still a great adventure! The food samplings on the tour were delicious and a highlight of the tour. We were on the tour with our 11 and 14 year old kids and they had a great time too! Highly recommend this tour!
We ride around some of the main areas of Shanghai with stops for tasting delicious local food and walking around unique shops. My guide responded all my questions and took me good pictures!
Ellen did a great job of showing and educating me on the Shanghai and its history and culture. I did the walking tour in the morning and the bike tour in the afternoon. There was little overlap and I a great use of my limited time and budget.
Ellen our guide was so delightful. She was easy going and relaxed but also organised and made us feel very safe riding our bikes through the busy streets of Shanghai. The 2 food stops were fantastic as were the 2 interesting historical stops in the French Concession. I was with my 16 year old son and we both lived it and would highly recommend it.
Fantastic tour - great way to see lots of the city, quickly and very informative too. Allen was great and explained a lot about the history and culture, as well as stopping off at some great spots for snacks. A good mix of cycling and stopping, and cycling is very easy in the city.
A really lovely experience from beginning to end. We got the perfect mix of old Shanghai and new Shanghai with some snack breaks a local food spots at just the right times along the way. Our guide was wonderful. The bikes were new and worked perfectly. The tour went a great pace. Couldn't ask for anything more. Highly recommend.
Did the tour with Ellen. Shanghai is maybe not a city that immediately comes to mind for a bike ride but it was as enjoyable as a tour I did in cycle friendly Copenhagen. Ellen is an excellent guide, she quietly explained the details before we left and her hand signaling made the ride seamless. She is extremely knowledgeable about Shanghai and we went through many areas that I would not have thought of visiting. The bonus was the food. A good variety that was very tasty. A highly recommended tour.
I went on this bike tour my first day in Shanghai to help me get oriented with the city. The tour guide, Ellen, was very informative and friendly. The bike I used was easy to ride, the stops on the tour were well curated and enjoyable, and I felt like I learned a lot while having fun. I highly recommend this tour.
I spent a very enjoyable morning in the company of Ellen, who guided me around the streets of the French Concession and old Shanghai town. I got lost and was late for our rendezvous at the hotel, but luckily Ellen had persevered and was still waiting for me. Ellen is a mine of information on the history of the area, and at each stop we made, she would recite interesting historical facts. We made numerous stops along the way, including Fuxing Park, where there is a French and a Chinese garden. Ellen explained how the Chinese garden's design was culturally influenced. We watched groups of retired Chinese who used the park for social activities, including singing and Tai Chi. We also made stops at restaurants to savour local food. My favourite being the pork dumplings. The bike ride lasted about 4 hours, covering quite a few miles and many interesting sites. Afterwards, I was fitter and richer in the knowledge of this wonderful area of Shanghai. I would highly recommend this bike tour, and if you are lucky, you might get Ellen as your guide.
Ellen was amazing, curating the ride with attention to safety, notwithstanding the light rain. Started out with a traditional breakfast snack, and the sights and duration were just right. I ended up going back to one of the sights few days later on my own.
Torrential rain and storms day of tour, including lightning. Would have been unsafe and incredibly unpleasant to participate. Opted to cancel and requested credit or refund, but was declined. Disappointing.
It was a life-enriching experience. Easy, enjoyable bike ride. Ellen is a great guide, very friendly and knowledgeable.
This was an incredible tour with Lee, Jordan, and Christina. We got to see the intimate areas of the French Concession, Fuxing Park, and so much more. We learned so much about Shanghai and really really got a feel for the city. Highly recommend this on your first or second day in Shanghai!!
Fantastic tour and super friendly and fun guides. This is a great way to see the city and experience it a fun way.
A little rain did not dampen this great morning ride and cultural exchange. Li and Christine showed me the French Concession, great little shops and an impromptu tea tasting.
Li and Christine were great hosts for my solo tour. A little rain did not slow us down. I suppose my favorite was the impromptu tea tasting we did.
I arrived 4 days early to participate in a guided tour of China. I had 4 days in Shanghai to do my own thing. I pre booked two tours on consecutive days before I left Australia. I had the misfortune of my baggage being delayed. In the end I had waited for 65 hours for my baggage to arrive. No fault of Viator nor mine. I arrived in Shanghai less than 24 hours before the first tour was to begin. Without a change of clothes, I was unable to participate in either of the pre booked tours. By the time the first tour was to begin I had been wearing the same clothes, a pair of shirts and a T-shirt for 48 hours. There is a no refund policy for cancellation if it is not done with at least 24 hours' notice. I was still in transit at this time not knowing what debacle lay ahead. I am out of pocket and got no sympathy from Viator. I even asked if I could change the date but somehow that was not possible.
This is best tour if have an airline layover or are in town visiting. It’s a very safe tour with wide cycling lanes. It really captures a snap shot of the old towns, French consession area and more. Giving you a taste to return to your favourite areas to explore further. Really knowledgeable and professional guides. Perfect mix of cycling and walking in the gardens and off the tourist trails to see some real local traditional living experiences. Thank you for a fab half day to help me experience some of the best of Shanghai. Great team X
I enjoyed my morning with James learning about Shanghai and China and biking around the French concession. He was very charming and flexible and showed me things I certainly could not have found on my own. Very nice bike and great service!
Probably one of the best guided tours I have done. Not only was Ellen so knowledgeable but great company. What a lovely way to see Shanghai and sample so much food. 10/10 and would score higher if I could. I booked this for my first day arriving in Shanghai and I felt it gave me a good intro to my trip and this beautiful city. Perfect for all levels of cycling abilities. Fantastic value for money.
I definitely think this is an amazing way to see the area around you. Expose yourself to the food. If you want to see how the locals live and their day to day you definitely want to take this tour. Also get great exercise. Don’t worry about the drivers because you always have the right of way.
This bike tour is amazing! I am so glad that I took this tour. The good thing about the bike tour is that you can always hop off and take pictures or listen to historical or cultural explanations from the guide. Also, I felt closer to the city and the people than riding a car or bus. It is fun biking around as well. Ellen was my guide. She was the absolutely best! She took it slow and made sure I was following her safely. She spoke very good English, and I learned so much from her about China and Shanghai about history and culture. The local foods I got from the tour were amazing! There was no way I could have found out those great local places by myself. The tour hits all the great and important streets and neighborhoods in Shanghai. It might be a good idea to take this tour at the beginning of your tour so that you will get a general sense of major areas that you want to check out. You get amazing photos from this tour as well. Loved it!
I had a beautiful day biking around Shanghai with Ellen. She was great about giving me hand signal directions to follow before the ride so that I was able to easily know exactly where we were going during the ride. She kept a comfortable pace and stoped at several places along the way to explain to me the history of different parts of the city. It was incredibly interesting. I particularly loved the two places we stopped for food. They were both so delicious. Riding a bike through Shanghai really gave me a chance to feel a little like a local and it was fun!
Really get to know non-tourist parts of the city. The bike allows for a large coverage too. Would have been good to have more food tasting.
This was what I wanted to see. The real Shanghai. I could see how real local people in Shanghai are living their lives. Local restaurant, apartment, public park, etc. everything was new and amazing. Also August was really nice. She is considerate and always smiles. And that helped me enjoy my trip more comfortably. Hope to see her again!
This was a perfect way to see Puxi. Our guide Steve provided a very personal and tailored ride. Comfortable bike, comfortable pace and mixing it with pedestrians and scooters and cars makes you feel part of the action. Just loved dancing in Fuxing Park.
On a beautiful Sunday morning, four of us took the bike tour led by Nicole and Ellen. The bike guides were very informative, had a good understanding of the history and culture and were very patient with our needs. The route was through relatively quiet neighborhoods with minimal car traffic. The neighborhoods were very interesting. We shopped, watched, ate and cycled. The pace was manageable for most anyone with basic bike skills. I will definitely do it again, albeit a different route.
A fantastic way to spend a morning in Shanghai. Nicole was friendly, knowledgeable and gave great tips on what to visit after the tour. The food was delicious and gave me a chance to try something I wouldn't have done by myself. An unexpected bonus was the tour gave me th confidence to cycle in Shanghai so I hired a bike from the street to cycle home afterwards! Nicole sent through photos and a fun video afterwards to help us remember our tour. Highly recommended.
Ray of China Cycle Tours did a good job in guiding me through the streets of Shanghai French Quarter. It’s my first time in Shanghai and first time to tour a city by biking. I would recommend the tour to anyone who wants to see the real city, not just popular tourist spots. My guide even made a short video clip of our ride. What a memorable trip!
Was going to give a very bad review, but it turned out to be such a great day thanks to Kevin! The day started badly, the guide didn’t show up and when I called the company I was told my reservation was not received, but they apologized, asked me to please wait for 30min and they will send someone. Kevin arrived and we went on a tour which lasted almost 5 hours, he took me to many different places to make it up. He was very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly- he even took me to see People’s Square and Nanjing Road after the tour finished. The tour was brilliant, you get to see so much more cycling! I absolutely loved it!
We did the 3hr morning tour with Ellen. Very enjoyable cycle through various areas of central Shanghai. Easy flat cycling and roads not too busy. Good way to start your trip as you can identify areas that you would like to visit later. Couple of food stops that were great too.
I'll start by saying why I gave it a 4 rating (would have been a 5, see comments below). It was really a great way to see different streets and areas of Shanghai. I had visited the city several times before passing through for business so I wanted to get a different view of it. Our guide August took us safely through many streets which I would have never traveled otherwise and was completely flexible with our requests to stop or continue on our journey. And she took us for some awesome Yang's dumplings to wrap up the trip! The way it turned out I was very happy I was able to take the trip. Now what could have made it a 1 rating (and if this had not have happened it would have been a 5). I booked the trip via Trip Advisor and right away got a text with a link to the confirmation. The morning of the trip (Aug 25) I sent a text to the local Shanghai number to confirm the meeting location. I didn't receive a text back but I wan't completely surprised as my cell was not a China number. So I went to the pick up location (I had it right) 15 minutes before the meeting time and wandered around looking for someone with the China Cycle Tours green jacket/vest as instructed. I couldn't find anyone but right about at the meeting time August approached me and asked I was the name of some people booked on her tour (also China Cycle Tour). It wasn't me, I told her I was on a different tour and showed her my receipt. After she picked up her 2 guests she told me to come with her to the shop to pick up the bikes and call her manager. When we got to the shop she was not able to contact her manager, and I called the contact number on my receipt but there was no answer. So she kindly allowed me to join her tour and it was great! Thank you August, and your company should thank you! I never did hear from China Cycle Tours so I would beware when booking. Text the contact number to confirm, and if no response then call, just to be safe. I hope for future customers and ratings they correct this issue.
August was a wonderful tour guide. This was a great, all round trip. I would highly recommend to all.
Leo was our fearless leader. He was very attentive to us and made certain of our safety as we moved in and around traffic. He even provided us with rain ponchos if needed. Cycling was an excellent way to see Shanghai. We stopped to see historic residential areas and toured the French Concession and market. We had lunch at a local Chinese restaurant and the food was delicious. Leo was so pleasant and personal. His English was amazing! I would highly recommend this tour as a relaxing way to see Shanghai.
This is a great way to see the both old and new Shanghai. Lots of opportunities to dismount and walk into food markets, the old town etc. Li, our guide, was very knowledgeable and the pace of the tour was perfect. I highly recommend it.
Enjoyed the morning bike tour. Slightly delayed waiting for people but that is a given with these types of tours. I very much enjoyed the biking which was a great way to see the city; the tour guides are extremely proficient in their directions and showed us great little spots of Old Shanghai. Great tour to do particularly if you are strapped for time and are leaving say in the evening.
To bike in Shanghai was one of my dreams and I felt so happy and alive during all the tour. Li and Emma was perfcet hosts, telling stories and making stops for walking in interesting places. I even danced with people in the park! Certainly you have to experience it in Shanghai!
We always prefer to explore new places by bike! Ellen, our guide on our half day Shanghai HIghlights tour gave us complete confidence as we followed her through both tiny alleyways and the highways of Shanghai. She gave us fantastic insights into the lifestyles of the local people of Shanghai as well as some history of the city. A highly recommended way to see the city!
Our family of three had just arrived in Shanghai and thought an introductory bike tour through Shanghai would be the perfect way to overcome jet lag and become acquainted with shanghai at the same time. It was a great call – we thoroughly enjoyed our bike tour with Ellen, our personable and knowledgeable tour guide. We spent a fair amount of time in the French concession and also dipped into Old Town and The Bund. It provided the perfect overview to the areas we would subsequently visit in Shanghai. I would recommend this tour for anybody who has a slightly adventurous streak.
With it being my second time in Shanghai, I wanted to explore it in a different way and going with this half day tour was just perfect! My guide Lee was good in providing an overview of the city with its history as well as introducing me to the amazing food! After the tour I had a better sense of the city and could not get enough of the fried buns! I will definitely recommend this tour because it felt so liberating to cycle in the city and to get to know its neighbourhoods. As it was drizzling, poncho was provided and Lee was very mindful of our safety and comfort!
Our guide was very customer minded and flexible. We stopped to get food when we got hungry and she kept in mind dietary wishes of the whole group (vegetarians). She knew al lot about China and its history and took the time to answer any questions we had. I highly recommend doing this tour. It was very enlightening.
