Jeremy at the concierge made my trip memorable! He went above and beyond. It was my first time staying with Mandarin Oriental and in Shanghai but he definitely made me want to stay here again. He was able to help with every single issue and question and gave great recommendations.
Deeply Disappointing Stay at Mandarin Oriental Shanghai I rarely write negative reviews, but this stay was so far below expectations that it deserves to be documented. For a property carrying the Mandarin Oriental name, the experience was shockingly poor from start to finish. 1. Rooms Not Ready at Check In time We arrived well past the standard check‑in time, yet the rooms were still “not ready” and “needed to be checked by the manager.” For a luxury hotel, this is unacceptable. 2. Housekeeping Was a Disaster Leftover laundry from the previous guest was still sitting in the concierge box inside the room. Daily amenity top‑ups were inconsistent and careless — the room was booked for two, but only one toothbrush was provided. Leftover food and drinks from the previous day were not cleared. I don’t know who they expect to drink day‑old bubble tea. Turndown service literally only turned down the bed. Used cutlery and dishes were left untouched until the next day’s housekeeping shift. This is basic housekeeping 101, and they failed it. Also overheard neighbour room giving poor feedback to the housekeeping manager so maybe the issue is more pervasive. 3. No Food Delivery to Room One of the rare hotels in China that refuses to send food delivery up to your room. Guests have to walk through the lobby — even in bathrobes — to collect their orders. If you’re expecting the usual China robot‑to‑door convenience, you won’t get it here. 4. Location Is Inconvenient Far from major attractions and not ideal for tourists. Stay here only if you have business at the offices; otherwise, it’s simply not worth the commute. 5. Breakfast Was a Complete Warzone Understaffed, chaotic, and poorly managed. Coffee took 20 minutes to arrive. Staff seemed confused and overwhelmed. The entire breakfast experience felt more like a cafeteria rush than a luxury hotel. At several points, we genuinely wondered if we were actually staying at a Mandarin Oriental. Final Verdict This is not a hotel I would recommend to any first‑time visitor to Shanghai. The service gaps, housekeeping failures, and operational issues are far below the standards of a five‑star property — and certainly far below what the Mandarin Oriental brand promises
We had another wonderful stay at the Mandarin Oriental Shanghai. The service throughout our visit was excellent and truly memorable. At the front desk, Sophie was very attentive and especially helpful with the billing details, which we greatly appreciated. Carson, the Associate Manager, was also very attentive and made the check-in process smooth and welcoming. We also had a lovely experience at Yong Yi Ting. Manager Li and his staff was very knowledgeable about the dishes and showed great kindness to my mother, which made the meal even more special. At breakfast, Manager Alan was amazing. He remembered my mother and I from our last trip and was genuinely happy to see us again. That level of personal attention really made us feel at home. Overall, the Mandarin Oriental Shanghai continues to deliver outstanding hospitality, thoughtful service, and a warm, elegant experience. I highly recommend this hotel and will always choose to stay here whenever I visit Shanghai.
Overall a good and comfortable stay at Mandarin Oriental Shanghai - Pudong. The service is unbeatable, as expected in China — the front desk team was always very helpful and genuinely tried to accommodate requests. Cleanliness was very good, sleep quality was excellent, and the room was quiet. I didn’t really use the AC much, but it seemed to work quietly as well. The hotel is in a great location and the room view was amazing. Breakfast was probably the weakest point — a bit average and slightly underwhelming compared to similar hotels. The property also feels like it needs some modernization, especially now that many hotel rooms are becoming much smarter and more updated. Still, overall recommended and I would come back again. As the name suggests, expectations are naturally very high, and while it doesn’t fully reach that “wow” level anymore, it remains a very comfortable and reliable stay.
