Unique view and great dining, but location is limiting Pros: The quarry view is genuinely amazing. Its an architectural wonder. Food quality is excellent, and the service at the restaurant was very good. The shows are very nice and worth watching. Cons: The location is highly isolated; there is an amusement park nearby and a historical aite to visit. The hotel pool is quite small and designed primarily for small kids rather than swimming. Good for a short, self-contained stay focused on the property itself, but functionally limited if you want activities outside the resort.

My stay at InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland was, without question, the most disturbing hotel experience I have ever had at a property that claims to be a luxury five-star hotel. The hotel itself is visually impressive in marketing materials, but my actual experience was dramatically different from what was advertised. The first issue was the condition of the property. Many windows appeared dirty, certain areas felt poorly maintained, and several details throughout the hotel did not meet the standards I would normally associate with a luxury international brand. The towels around the pool area looked worn and outdated, and the overall presentation often felt closer to a mid-range hotel than a premium resort. The breakfast experience was generally good, and the kitchen staff performed well. Food quality was one of the few consistently positive aspects of my stay. Unfortunately, the most serious problems were related to safety and guest experience. During my stay, I became involved in a situation that left me genuinely concerned about my personal security and the security of my child. Following a dispute involving individuals who presented themselves as being connected to hotel operations, police officers were called to my room. The interaction that followed was deeply uncomfortable. Rather than feeling protected as a paying guest, I felt pressured and intimidated. I was ultimately instructed to leave the hotel earlier than planned despite having an active reservation. Whether this was the intention or not, the experience left me feeling vulnerable and unwelcome. I have stayed in luxury hotels around the world, and never before have I experienced a situation where law enforcement became involved in a guest matter in a way that left me feeling less safe rather than more secure. Another concern was the presence of individuals in public areas who appeared to approach guests offering assistance with technical issues such as internet access and connectivity. As an international traveler, especially in China where many visitors experience internet and VPN difficulties, this creates opportunities for misunderstandings and potential security concerns. I would strongly encourage hotel management to implement clearer procedures and guidance for guests regarding who is officially authorized to provide technical assistance. The pool experience was also disappointing. Staff behavior around the pool often appeared indifferent and unprofessional. Interactions felt dismissive rather than welcoming, which again contrasted sharply with the standards expected from a luxury brand. The hotel’s location creates an additional challenge. Because there are multiple properties under the InterContinental name in Shanghai, transportation confusion is common. During my trip, I experienced repeated difficulties with drivers taking incorrect routes or misunderstanding the destination. For international guests unfamiliar with the city, a dedicated airport transfer recommendation or clearer arrival instructions would significantly improve the experience. Perhaps the most disappointing aspect is that after raising these concerns through official channels, I have yet to receive what I consider a meaningful response. Given the seriousness of the issues I experienced, I expected a much stronger effort to investigate and address them. InterContinental is a brand that traditionally represents trust, professionalism, and guest care. Unfortunately, my experience at Shanghai Wonderland did not reflect those values. I left the property with the impression that management is focused on maintaining the image of a spectacular hotel, while many fundamental aspects of safety, guest communication, maintenance, and service quality require urgent attention. This review reflects my personal experience only. However, based on that experience, I cannot recommend this property to other international travelers, particularly those traveling with family.
Located in Sheshan town, roughly 75mins away from Pudong airport. The hotel itself is an amaze despite the room is slightly dated. Recommend to visit in low season since can be quite crowded and service can be slow but overall it is a great place for young family. Next door there is a small theme park for young children and the nightly light show also quite spectacular
A beautifully designed modern hotel with striking architecture, set against the unique backdrop of a quarry. The atmosphere is incredibly peaceful—perfect for a relaxing getaway and a true recharge during your vacation. One of the most interesting features is the “upside-down” layout, where the lower floors actually offer better and more dramatic views of the surroundings. It adds a unique perspective you don’t often find elsewhere. At night, the experience is elevated by a fantastic laser show that lights up the quarry, creating a memorable and visually stunning atmosphere. Overall, a distinctive destination that combines design, nature, and tranquility exceptionally well.
Fantastic hotel for couples and family! The decorations are very intricate. Unique concept staying in a quarry. Your hotel room needs to take the lift downwards instead of up! The viewing gallery deserves a good walk that allows one to see the hotel in whole glory! The night light display is marvellous with drone display. Highly recommended!
