Some stays quietly reassure you that you chose well and Golden Tulip Shanghai Hongqiao was exactly that for us. We stayed three nights in an Executive King Room and for a first experience in China the hotel set a very high standard. The property sits comfortably in the Hongqiao area which made moving around the city easy and returning back at night feel calm and secure. From the moment we arrived the experience felt smooth and thoughtful. The front desk team spoke English confidently which helped a lot especially on day one. With some of the other staff we had small language barriers but translation apps solved everything and they were genuinely kind and patient throughout. The warmth in their service stood out more than perfect language. Every question was met with a smile and real effort to help which made us feel very well looked after. Breakfast truly deserves its own moment because it was outstanding and something I still think about. My absolute favourite was the millet porridge known as 小米粥 Xiao Mi Zhou which was warm comforting and perfect for mornings. I also loved the freshly made Chinese wheat noodles from the noodle station called 拉面 La Mian cooked to order and deeply satisfying. Along with that I enjoyed steamed buns 包子 Baozi soft and fluffy vegetable dumplings 饺子 Jiaozi and stir fried vegetables 清炒蔬菜 Qing Chao Shu Cai. The soy milk 豆浆 Dou Jiang paired beautifully with the lighter dishes and there were also simple fried rice 炒饭 Chao Fan options and fresh fruits. The balance between traditional Chinese breakfast and familiar items was done very well and I genuinely wish we had planned at least one lunch or dinner at the hotel because the breakfast quality alone made me curious to try their other meals. The hotel facilities are well maintained and thoughtfully designed. The gym is modern and well equipped and while I only managed to work out one day due to our packed schedule it was genuinely a space I wished I had more time to enjoy. Laundry service was extremely fast and they also offer express laundry which was very helpful during travel. A charming detail that made us smile was the robot servers which added a fun modern touch without feeling gimmicky. Every night we went on long walks around the city sometimes up to three hours and the hotel staff patiently explained routes and landmarks and even gave us the hotel card so we could return easily. They personally told us we could call anytime if we got lost which showed real care and attention. Small gestures like this made the stay feel personal rather than transactional. No stay is without minor flaws and ours had a few worth noting. At times the room temperature did not remain consistently cool even though the weather outside was cold and we occasionally had to get up during the night to readjust the air conditioning which was a little annoying. Some communication with non front desk staff also took extra time due to language limitations and the area around the hotel is quieter at night so it may not suit those looking for nightlife right outside the door. However these were small inconveniences when weighed against the overall comfort care and professionalism we experienced. Golden Tulip Shanghai Hongqiao delivered a pleasant refined and reliable stay and I would happily return without hesitation.
As a Radisson VIP-member I cannot recommend this hotel. First of all the executive floor rooms dont seem to be available to international customers, they are apparently only free to book on trip.com. At least I briefly tried booking them for a certain day. While they were available on trip.com, they were not shown on the radisson app, at least not for that one day. Hopefully I was just unlucky with my choice of dates. Second, as a Radisson VIP-member I did not feel like a VIP at all. No recognition of status at check in. No upgrades. I had to literally beg twice to 2 different people at reception for a (standard) room on higher floors, that didnt have anything else than the one at floor 10 but at least better views. No present like fruit etc in my room. People at reception were either very distant to simply unfriendly. More than 10 days after my stay I still have not received the points and/or night credits from the hotel so even that doesnt work. The only thing positive about my stay was the free breakfast. They also have (rare in China) some japanese food like miso soup which I personally like. Also very fresh bread, cheese and proper ham etc so breakfast was very good compared to other hotels. Last but not least the rooms: All of them (I tried 3 during my "upgrade-drama") reaked because of the wet, humid shower curtain. Its disgusting. I took it off and later put it back on again after my stay because it made the whole room smell damp. Bed was ok but no luxury like coffee machines. The executive rooms are apparently off limits for international radisson vip members as updates so cannot comment on those. Oh and on one day the cleaning lady entered my room even though I had the DND sign out, catching me naked on the toilet. This was the worst hotel I stayed in over my 1 month china trip, at least it was cheap and fairly clean.
Very average 4-star - feels like a budget hotel. Downsides - 1. my room smelled strongly of stale smoke; 2. the room thermostat was stuck very high at 25c; 3. minimum 20 minutes walk to closest public transport. Positives - spacious, comprehensive breakfast, and staff seemed ok.
It’s my first night in this hotel, and I just can’t breathe due to the strong cigarette oder in the room. The hotel in general has the scent, and somehow it smells stronger inside of the room. The concierge said it’s a non-smoking room, so I am not sure where it’s coming from. If you have an asthma like me, this hotel might not be suitable for you.
