Seoul Ghost Walk: Dark History & Folklore After Dark

As a visitor from Hong Kong, this was truly one of the most unique and memorable experiences of my trip to Seoul. Shawn is an incredibly knowledgeable and passionate guide who brings Korean folklore, ghost stories, history, and local traditions to life. The tour was not only entertaining, but also fascinating and thought-provoking. I especially enjoyed learning about Korean folk beliefs, spirits, haunted locations, and the cultural traditions behind them. What impressed me most was how the stories helped me see a completely different side of Seoul beyond the usual tourist attractions. Shawn's enthusiasm and storytelling made the entire evening engaging from start to finish. The detailed follow-up email with additional resources was also a wonderful touch. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Seoul who wants a deeper understanding of Korean culture and folklore. My family and I had a fascinating 2.5 hour walk about with Shawn Morrissey on this Ghost Walk. Shawn is well versed in the all of stories, answering numerous questions and made for a great evening. Though I lived / worked in Seoul for 5 years (many years ago), at least 90% of the information was new to me. The tour was very well worth the time and cost! Highly recommended for anyone looking for a very interesting night walkabout!

Shawn was an amazing story teller and very friendly and kind! He's a wealth of folklore knowledge and I learned a lot about the different ghosts in Korea. The spookiest part is probably people's experiences with the ghosts! The pace was good and I definitely want to sign up for the extended tour next time to hear more!

I was expecting to hear the stories of specific ghosts, but it was about ghost beliefs in Korean culture. There was also a lot of plugging of his book.

We really enjoyed this tour! Our guide Shawn was awesome and a really amazing storyteller. At first we were a bit nervous that the tour started at 8pm since we were still jet lagged but every location and story that came with it was super cool and it was so worth staying up late for! We booked the extended version and would highly recommend!

We had such a fun experience on the night ghost tour walk with Shawn. He was engaging, and with our group being small was able to answer all our questions and give us bonus insight! Definitely recommend this walking tour for some stories that you won't hear otherwise!

The Dark Side of Seoul: Ghostlore & Urban Legends Tour was easily one of the most interesting experiences I had in Seoul. Our guide was an incredible storyteller and knew exactly how to create the right atmosphere while walking through the city at night. What made it especially fascinating were not only the Korean ghost stories and urban legends themselves, but also the stories the guide shared about strange and creepy experiences reported by previous tour participants. That added another layer to the whole experience and made some of the locations feel completely different once you knew their stories. The guide was engaging, knowledgeable and genuinely great at storytelling. If you enjoy ghost stories, folklore, urban legends or simply want to discover a very different side of Seoul, I can absolutely recommend this tour. A fantastic evening and definitely one of my most memorable experiences in Seoul! 👻🇰🇷

The Tour was more of a Ghost Walk, where Shawn told us all about the spooky legends and ghosts Seoul has to offer. Definitely fitting for this time of year (September/October)! Shawn managed to hit the right mixture between scary and funny so it ended up a really nice experience! We ended up being a smaller size group, so it was quite nice for a more relaxed atmosphere.

The walk was a memorable experience, and a great activity to do in Seoul if you are interested in stories and behind-the-scenes details, not only about Korean ghost lore, but also about Seoul and Korea in general. Shawn has a lot of local and historical knowledge, which made the whole experience very engaging. Exploring the haunted places was really exciting. It was great to see a completely different side of Seoul and learn about some interesting superstitions. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys mysteries and ghost stories.

Interesting stories about ghosts and folklore. Fun to walk around at night in different parts of Seoul and hear stories about different ghost sightings and folk beliefs.

This was a very enjoyable ghost tour. I'm glad to have opted for the extended version. Shawn clearly is deeply immersed in Korean history and culture and has an academic and personal interest in these dark stories. He is an excellent storyteller, and he learns each guest's name and takes an interest in where they are from and any paranormal experiences they may have had. I especially enjoyed that this tour led me off of the big, busy boulevards and down charming residential streets. Shawn set the scene by getting the group grounded in the topography of the city of Seoul, and he transmitted his enthusiasm for the beauty and energy of a very special tree, for example. I loved that this transplant-cum-local shared his special appreciation for and connection to this place and its history, and I felt like I got a privileged insider's view into a city I was visiting for only a few days. No bother that I didn't see a ghost on tour ;) I'm looking forward to reading Shawn's book when I return home!

It’s was nice to walk in the evening a get stories of different areas of the city. Our tour guide was a great story teller.

Absolutely fantastic experience, one of our favorite things we did in Seoul! We took the ghost tour and the lore tour(extended editions!), and Shaun and Joe were incredible guides. The stories were eerie and chilling, with lots of historical context to match. The tours take you all over Seoul, but the pace is nice and easy, you won’t even notice you’ve been walking for two hours. My mom has been listening to the podcast for years so she was especially delighted to see all the places she had only heard about before. Truly a dream come true, and lived up to all the hype! Thank you Shaun and Joe for the memories we’ll treasure forever. We’re already planning our next visit to take the grave walk :)

the tour was way over priced we left feeling ripped off and we felt like he was scamming everyone he just kept trying to sell his tours and his book he wrote really annoying considering it was $60

We had a great time with Joe. So much so that we extended from the regular tour to the longer tour. The jokes were great and his insight from living in Seoul so long was great to add context to the stories he told.

Joe delivered a very knowledgeable round up of gruesome and interesting historical facts and folklore. We all enjoyed it.

My friend and I went for the extended tour and there was another couple who joined us for the non-extended version. Felt that the extended version was more worth the money with more sharing of stories and exploring additional sites. Shawn was a great guide and storyteller and also very knowledgeable of the Korean culture and folklore/ghosts. He was always open to answering any questions and sharing more related stories in return. 2.5 hours flew by pretty fast and we wished there was a further extended version haha! As someone who is much more sensitive to the paranormal, I had 3 experiences on the tour, all of which were on the palace grounds. Bought Shawn's book to read more into it :)

Amazing way to spend an evening in Seoul. Shawn is an engaging storyteller and has so much knowledge about Korean folklore. Most of these stories can’t be heard anywhere else because Shawn has been collecting them himself! There’s also the added layer of ghost activity reports from previous guests on this tour itself. We were thoroughly spooked and enjoyed the mix of old and modern superstitions. Shawn answered all our questions we’re excited to read his book and learn more.

The experience was really good and we were especially pleased with our guide Shawn. Our guide was very insightful about the subject and told stories in such a way that we were quite spooked, but he was also very funny. 100% worth it! Our guide Shawn was so knowledgeable about folklore and ghosts. We visited some beautiful spots that we wouldn't have visited otherwise. The 2,5 hours flew by. Due to our schedule we weren't able to do the second ghost walk that they offer, but next time we're in Seoul, we'll definitely book it. PS Shawn, love your book!

We had a great time during this tour with Shawn! We've done quite a few spooky and haunted tours all over the world, but Shawn's way with words and stories made this one of the most memorable (read: best) we've been on. Despite the heavy rain, the route felt manageble and safe to walk. Shawn has a good walking pace that's easy to follow and we didn't lose anyone! We even ended the tour with more people than we started with. Halfway through the tour we noticed a girl in a long white dress amongst the group staring at us in pure silence, we swore we hadn't seen her before but we took her along anyway. Just kidding. (or am I???????) All jokes aside, I highly recommend going on this tour with Shawn! The stories and sites were interesting and gave us the chills several times. We went on the extended tour and it was definitely worth it.

In my experience the tour is not worth this price, I book the extended tour and I cant say I found out much. I guess Joe is tired of repeeating the same story over and over again over the years, which I understand, but it makes the tour a bit sluggish

Not only was it nice to walk around the city at night (due to it being more tranquil) but we walked through streets I hadn’t seen or been to before. Shawn was a very good story teller and it was nice to listen to the stories he told. It was a fun evening and I will definitely book a new tour in the future.

Hands down, a very good ghost story walking tour! What I liked: I was only one of two attendees, which made the tour and story telling more personal. Shawn Morrisey, our tour guide, was an engaging storyteller, never a boring moment. The stories and urban legends he narrated, as well as the folklore associated with them, were very interesting. The tour itself was the right length for me, although I would think the two and a half hour walk might be too much for older people. They have a shorter tour available, too. (Personally, I didn't even notice the time; the engagement was that good!) What I "didn't like:" Nobody to blame here, really. I just wished that I booked the ghost walk in the beginning of my time in Korea instead of the night before I was scheduled to fly out. Shawn mentioned other places to see, connected with the tour, but circumstances for me made it impossible to visit them. As I told Shawn, "On my next trip to Korea!" (Better book the tour early in your Korean vacation, as you will want to visit and experience the places Shawn mentions.)

I'm a fan of ghost stories, urban legends and folklore. I don't know much about Korean folklore, so this was a perfect oppurtunity for me to learn. Was it spooky? Yes. Was it chilly? Yes. Do I recommend? Absolutely!

We have done ghost tours around the world and this was one of the best. It is not because we saw several ghosts. Instead, it is because we heard fascinating stories about real events and real people that have lived in the folklore of Korea. Shawn Morrissey is a fantastic guide with a depth of knowledge and the ability to tell a story. We took the extended tour and it seemed to end too soon. Shawn kept the tour moving and the information flowing.

This tour was amazing. The tales were spooky and culturally informative, our guide was amazing. It rained all night and we all absolutely loved it anyway!

Shawn tailored the tour to our interests since we were a small group and gave us bonus stories from personal experiences. The palace grounds at night were spooky and beautiful. He did a great job of setting the mood and giving us cultural context for his stories. Apparently other tour group members have reported supernatural experiences during the tour, so if you're hoping to see a real ghost there might be a chance!

What an amazing and unique experience! Shawn has so much knowledge about folk traditions and ghost lore! I appreciated how he answered our random questions about these topics in such a thoughtful and insightful way. I also appreciated that the stories were based on actual research from multiple sources, and it was interesting to learn how these stories connect to folk traditions, culture, and history. On another note, even though it is a walking experience, we were able to sit down at various times of the walk while Shawn educated us on these topics so it wasn’t tiring! I definitely recommend this educational walk to everyone!

It was a surprisingly fun walking tour. I didn't really know what to expect and I personally don't even believe in ghosts but it was still really interesting and entertaining learning about what other people believe as well as a lot of historical superstitions and stuff. Shawn was very knowledgeable as well about folklore and traditions and stuff so the experience was also educational. I personally didn't get scared but my girlfriend was creeped out for sure.

second time going on the walk -- I thought it would be a repeat, but the content was new, as well as the walk itself. I learned something then and learned something else this time as well. I am Korean, lived here pretty much my entire life and thoroughly enjoyed this experience! I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for more than just a surface level experience while visiting Korea.

LOVED this - so much fun. Well researched and interesting. More like a local history walk in some ways, weaving in local mythologies and cultural stories. Absolutely worthwhile.

This was my 1st time in Seoul, and the 1st tour I’ve ever done in my life and it was amazing! Shawn was a phenomenal tour guide and made the experience worth every penny. I was traveling solo and 2 other couples were in the group but I didn’t feel left out at all. Shawn’s storytelling was next level. I don’t really believe in ghosts but his stories sent chills down my spine. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, you will love this tour. I cannot speak highly enough of it.
