Amazing! Highlight of my trip. Learned a lot and Jun was very knowledgeable, measured, and empathetic
Hearing June’s story and what life is like in North Korea was very impactful for our group. Highly recommend. Thanks Jun.
My husband and I had a private tour to the DMZ with Jun, a young man who defected from North Korea. When I asked my husband what his favorite part of our trip was on the flight home, his response was, hands down, our tour with Jun. I could not agree more. The DMZ itself is fascinating, just a width of a river away, with binoculars that give you a clear view of people working and cows pulling wagons, but that is not the highlight if you book with Jun. He is a fabulous storyteller with a harrowing story to share. We were riveted. We will never forget this experience.
Jun is an amazing person, great guide giving you real insights into the life he led in North Korea- Definitely worth doing this trip.
This was an absolutely unforgettable day. Over lunch and a tour of the DMZ area, Jun shared his personal experience of defecting from North Korea as a teenager. I was so happy I chose this tour instead of an impersonal group experience. Don't hesitate to book with Jun.
Deep and respectful insight, excellent lunch, personable guide.
If you’re considering booking this tour, just book it now!! This was without a doubt the highlight of my trip to Seoul. Jun is an amazing tour guide, has an inspiring and intense story, and is a very kind and impressive person. I’m so grateful he shared his story and views on the DMZ, unification, and much more with us. From pickup to lunch and all the conversations in between, the tour was a comfortable experience, even though the topic itself was very intense. As a solo female traveller, I was a bit unsure about booking the trip, but I am so glad I did. My gratitude goes out to Jun, who has the courage to share his life story with us (in fantastic English, may I add). Do yourself a favour and book the tour!
Unforgettable experience! Jun is an excellent guide. His story is compelling and gave me a deeper understanding of Korea.
If you want a deeper understanding of what life is really like in North Korea, then please pick this tour with Jun. We were grateful to him for sharing his extremely difficult and treacherous escape to South Korea. We will continue to reflect on what he has told.
What a unique experience with Jun, a North Korean escapee who speaks fluent English. Not only does he have a wealth of insider knowledge but also genuinely a good tour guide. Think of this more as a honest North Korean cultural experience in the setting of the DMZ.
If you are trying to decide between a large commercial bus tour and booking a private experience (upto 3 people) out to the border zone, let me save you the time: book this private tour immediately. It completely transforms a standard sightseeing trip into a deeply profound, personal, and unforgettable memory. Even without stepping foot on one of the mega-bus commercial alternatives, the massive contrast in quality, dignity, and depth is undeniable: Profound, Intimate Storytelling: Instead of listening to a generic script barked over a megaphone to a crowd of 40 strangers, this private tour provides an uninterrupted forum for deep, authentic, human-centric history. The privilege of sitting down at a local restaurant in Paju operated by a North Korean defector to experience authentic local food, followed by hearing first hand stories of survival and resilience while looking out at the landscape, is incredibly moving. A Dignified, Seamless Pace: Navigating around the likes the Odusan Unification Tower and Imjingak Pyeonghoa-Nuri Park requires strict protocols. Moving dynamically in a private vehicle is perfect. We could truly linger longer at the moving river lookouts and take in the view across the mudflats in peace. Freedom to Truly Connect: Being a small private group gave us a safe, quiet, and deeply respectful environment to ask spontaneous questions and genuinely process the heavy history of a divided nation. From the seamless pickup to the final drop-off at Hapjeong Station, this tour was handled with absolute professionalism and care. If you value comfort, flexibility, and a truly meaningful connection to the history here, this private tour with the amazing Jun is worth every single penny. Absolute perfection!
Jun’s journey is remarkable and hearing his story was a gift. I traveled to Korea with my two, lifelong best friends, and our first activity was Jun’s DMZ tour. We spent an exquisite two weeks in the country, but our visit with Jun was the highlight. Most importantly, it shifted the tectonic plates of how I organize and understand the world. Weeks later and home again on the other side of the globe, I cannot stop feeling deep gratitude for his willingness to share his experiences. His is a story I feel like I didn’t earn and did nothing to deserve hearing, but Jun’s DMZ tour is an honor. I carry it in my heart.
Spending the day with Jun was a great experience. He provides a unique perspective about his defection journey, unification, and life views. He has a deep connection and passion for the North-South relation that you can feel which I don't think you get with the bigger tours. His English was good, he's very knowledgable about Korea and the world. I would highly recommend Jun's tour.
This tour was absolutely incredible. We spent quite a while considering possible tour options before booking this one, and we are so happy we had the opportunity to meet Jun and go on this tour with him. He picked us up at our hotel and took us by car to a North Korean restaurant in Paju, followed by the Odusan Unification Tower (which features an exhibit focused largely on South Korean visitors rather than foreign tourists, and views across the river to North Korea - the fixed observatory binoculars/telescopes were actually quite good, though having our own binoculars would have been even more interesting) and Imjingak Park (where the locomotive and the Freedom Bridge are). Jun has a unique perspective as someone who escaped from North Korea, and he has an extremely thoughtful take on the history of the Korean conflict, unification, and current-day tourism at the DMZ. When you take this tour, you get actual insights, not the noisy tourist schtick. From the Odusan Tower, you can also see into North Korea, which is not possible from the more popular tourist areas of the DMZ. We don’t feel like we missed out on anything by not taking the usual tour (for example, Jun doesn’t go to the Third Tunnel because it requires getting on a large bus, and he focuses on the view from Odusan Tower and sharing his own story). We feel very lucky to have met this exceptional young man and highly, highly recommend this tour.
The best tour I have been! Tourguide Jun was excellent! Being from the North-Korea he was able to give a deep overview about the life there. He also told about how he managed to escape. It was very inspirational and thoughts provoking tour! Plus I could see the different areas of DMZ and try out authentic North-Korean meal. The highlight of my trip in Korea! Totally recommending!
If you are interested in more than just a trip to the DMZ, this is an invaluable opportunity to learn about North Korea and the harrowing process of escape. Jun is an incredible resource and is widely read on world history, giving him fascinating insights into the inner workings of the Kim dictatorship.
This was a great experience. Hearing Jun's story was amazing. I had quite a few of the "I'm not crying, you're crying" moments as he told us story.
This was one of the best experiences I’ve had as a traveler. The tour is perfectly done and the story is life changing. Me and my friend couldn’t have been happier. The tour shows you a new perspective that is eye opening. Everyone who visits the DMZ should do this and not the large group tours. Thank you for the story and experience. I can’t be more grateful and honored to hear a life story.
We've been to the DMZ previously. But after 20 years, we were looking for a different perspective. Jun Tours promotional offering through Trip Advisor was intriguing. A private and intimate tour (up to 4 people only), Jun offered a unique experience of dining at an outstanding North Korean restaurant. Food was delicious. His selections of what to show us were appreciated. He knew thebtiming to avoid the crowds and made it so convenient by parking closer to entrances. What we liked best was his offer to pick us up at our hotel mid-morning rather than getting up early and finding thr pick up location in Seoul. Jun was very knowledgeable and provided a wonderful perspective on the DMZ and his untraditional growing up. His observations were refreshing to hear, that life for some is just not fair, but everyone has the power to change their lives with determination, hard work, focus, and a little luck. The only thing Jun could have provided was bottled water for his guests after his nearly 7+ hour tour. While not necessary, it would have added class to already classy and private tour. It would have been fabulous by showing his caring attitude that he has for life.
Absolute privilege to listen to our guide's story and have the opportunity to ask questions and learn from him. It was so much more personal than merely reading information and piecing together a more partial understanding.
Spending the day with Jun has been the highlight of our trip. His story is very moving and interesting, and he speaks about his escape with such maturity, thoughtfulness, and humor. He also does not shy away from sharing his personal feelings about the commercialization of the DMZ and the frustrating politics around reunification, and I really really appreciated that. This is not a glossy tour; it is a real, lived experience and very moving. He is very open to answering questions, and I learned a lot from him that I will be thinking about for a long long time. I cannot recommend this tour enough - it is worth every minute.
If you have found this tour - book it. Schedule it RIGHT NOW. Forget the money, forget any other group tour experience you're looking at...this is absolutely the best possible DMZ experience you can book. The tour and the time spent with Jun will leave a lasting impact on you and quite frankly might be the highlight of your trip to Korea. It was for us. Jun picks you up in his vehicle and he is very friendly and conversational. He is an open book, and you can ask any questions about life and culture in North Korea as well as what life has been like in South Korea. He speaks English very well, too. The North Korean restaurant is such a unique experience and nice part of the journey. Jun orders all of the food and walks you through it. We all thought it was tasty. I want keep most of the experience under wraps to let you fully take it in once you're with him. If I could give this experience 10 stars I would. Hands down the best decision to book.
A completely unique, authentic, and deeply touching experience. Our tour guide was clear and well spoken. We were able to ask endless questions and got heartfelt answers based on lived experience.
I found this tour recommended on Reddit and I'm very glad I was influenced to book this tour. The chance to hear from a North Korean defector was very special. A far different experience of the DMZ than if I went by myself or a regular tour. I feel really grateful to Jun, who does this tour that brings up his difficult memories and somewhat exploits him and his family's suffering. I wish many people will take his tour so he can secure enough money to find his father and pursue the business idea he shared that would allow him to live more peacefully.
This was, without exaggeration, one of the most memorable and moving tours I've ever taken anywhere in the world. Our guide is a North Korean defector who escaped as a teenager, and hearing the DMZ explained through his lived experience transforms what could be a fairly standard tourist itinerary into something profound. He is articulate, thoughtful, generous, and balanced - open about the brutality of the regime he left behind, but clear-eyed and humane about the complexities of South Korean society. He brought history, geopolitics, and the everyday texture of life under totalitarianism alive in a way no book or documentary could. I left genuinely changed. Cannot recommend highly enough.
I am so glad I decided to book this tour! I think visiting with Jun gives you a whole new perspective on the DMZ. Jun organizes it on his own and it's a unique chance to meet him and hear his story. He picked us up in his car and the first stop was the North Korean restaurant which I also really enjoyed. Then we moved to the DMZ where he shared his incredible story of escaping to South Korea and also shared his perspective on the DMZ itself. He is also very passionate about history so I could learn new things about history and relationship between North and South Korea. I am very happy I had a chance to spend the day with him! I'd give the tour 6 stars if it was possible. Jun also mentioned that he may organize North Korean cooking class in the future, so I would definitely also check it out, once it's available :)
This was a day we will not easily forget. Jun’s story is amazing and moving, and I am grateful he decided to share it with us. I wish him all the best and would definitely recommend his tour!
We had an absolutely incredible experience with our tour guide today. He shared deeply personal insights into life in North Korea and his own escape, something you simply cannot get from any standard tour. His story was incredibly touching and emotional; at times, it genuinely brought us to tears. The way he explained everything was so open, honest, and real. You could feel how much it meant, and it made the entire experience unforgettable. He speaks excellent English, is very approachable, and answered all of our questions with patience and openness. This was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience that we will never forget. Highly, highly recommended. Thank you very much Jun! We look forward to seeing you again!
We expected a DMZ tour. What we got was something much more powerful. Jun is not only an excellent guide—clear, funny, and incredibly knowledgeable—but also someone with a life story that completely changes how you understand Korea. As a North Korean defector, he shared his personal journey with us, and it was one of the most moving experiences we’ve ever had as a family. Our kids (16 and 13) were completely engaged the whole time, we were asking questions and absorbing everything. There were moments where we were all silent, just taking it in, and others where we were laughing together. That balance is something very special. Starting the tour at a North Korean-style restaurant was a brilliant idea. The food was great, and having that relaxed time with Jun, chatting openly, made the experience feel personal, not just a tour. Seeing the DMZ through Jun’s eyes gives you a perspective you simply cannot get from books or standard tours. If you’re coming to Seoul, don’t think twice. This is something you’ll carry with you long after the trip ends.
This was an amazing tour where we had the honour to speak candidly with a North Korea defector. He shared his story with us and really made us understand and appreciate the seriousness of the DMZ. The lunch was delicious as well. I would absolutely recommend this tour.
We had such a good time with Jun! He was very informative, helpful, and generous in sharing his story. Plus the food was great!
Jun’s story was incredibly moving, he gave insightful information about North Korean history and culture, provided thoughtful answers to our questions, and was a very safe driver.
A very personal and informative tour. Our guide was very friendly and we enjoyed his company. Recommend him and his tour to everyone.
I booked as a solo traveler and I was paired with a nice couple. Pick up from hongdae was smooth and lunch was delicious. Jun left a lasting impression and his story will stay with me forever. He was super funny and answered our questions. His resilience was inspiring and this was the most memorable part of my trip. Skip the big tours that are catered to tourists and book this educational tour. Despite having some prior knowledge about North Korea from school, Juns story was very insightful
This tour is the most unique experience you will ever have in Korea. I have learned so much about North Korea vs. South Korea that are not taught in the history books, especially from the perspective of a defector. For all the foodies out there, it was also very enlightening learning about the food served in North Korea and learning the differences with South Korea. One of the best tours I have ever taken.
This tour is outstanding - the highlight of our two week trip in Seoul. Jun runs the tour as a small private group as opposed to the big bus tours. He picked us up from our hotel and drove us to the first stop on the way to the DMZ - a restaurant which services North Korean food. I was worried what it would be and if I could eat it - but it was surprisingly delicious! He had everything arranged and were served five really great dishes. He ate with us and we were able to get to know him a bit more. His English is very good and we had no trouble communicating with him. After lunch we drove to the DMZ where he shared is unique perspective on the DMZ, North Korea - including what we saw through the binoculars - and then of course, his incredible story on how he got to South Korea. After that we went to another stop along the DMZ where he was able to continue his thoughts and reflections on the DMZ, history and current situation. It was intriguing. He is not only an amazing tour guide, but an amazing person. I was honored to have the chance to meet him. You will not regret booking this tour!!
This is such a great experience - the guide is knowledgable and brings a unique perspective to the DMZ and its transformation over the past 50 years. He is friendly and easy to talk to. His story is harrowing and moving. Would recommend to anyone looking for a more personal look at the DMZ and what it means to someone who was and is heavily impacted by it.
This experience is absolutely incredible. Jun is so thoughtful when sharing his story, and you get to learn so much about North Korea from a North Korean born person. He’s so funny, charming, and interesting. The car is very nice and his driving was safe. I really enjoyed the north Korean food for lunch and always feel foos is a great way to understand a culture. This is a must-do experience if you’re in Seoul.
Jun was great to communicate with right from our time of booking and shuffled his schedule to accommodate our availability. On the day we had to adjust our time schedule due to our ship docking later than scheduled and Jun was happy to accommodate this change. Jun picked us up in a comfortable vehicle. Right from the start he was warm and friendly. We were able to ask any questions we had about his journey and his life in Korea. We ate a lovely meal and continued up to the Odusan Observatory. This tour was informative and moving. It is very authentic and avoids the typical DMZ tourist trail. His story is something we’ll never forget and we feel so fortunate to spent the day with him. Thank you so much Jun.
This was the most engaging and rewarding tour we have ever taken, with no exceptions. The host is down-to-earth, friendly, and very open about the realities of the DMZ situation and the challenges that face defectors. This is not the glossy JSA tour; this is a visit to other DMZ locations, with genuine insight and emotion.
Jun runs an amazing tour. He speaks perfect English and has a fantastic manner of explaining the complex NK and SK situation that is personal and informative. As foreigners we hear so little about life in the DPRK and to meet somebody who grew up there who can tell us what life was like for a normal person was such a unique experience. This tour is personalised and shows some fascinating parts of the border region between the two countries and doesn't focus on the kitsch parts of the DMZ. Jun was a great communicator before the trip, it was easy and stress free for pickup. I truly hope many more people book this tour and support this young man in his unique tour!
Our DMZ tour with Jun was truly unforgettable. Jun is a North Korean defector who took us to a North Korean restaurant, the DMZ, and shared his remarkable story with us throughout the day. Hearing his firsthand experience and perspective on life in North Korea and his escape made this so much more than just a tour. Despite everything he has been through, Jun was so composed and engaging, bringing a deeply personal context to everything we saw. His story and insights will stay with us for a lifetime. An exceptional experience that we highly recommend.

Hearing Jun's story is hard to describe as anything but a lifechanging experience. It is an opportunity to hear what life in North Korea is really like but also Jun's personal journey - a very rare chance to hear a first-hand account of some of the most extreme resilience and human spirit imaginable. Jun happily answered our hundreds of questions and is even able to look back on his experiences with good humour. Meeting Jun was an absolute privilege for us and should be considered an must-do activity during any visit to Seoul.
It has taken me a while to get round to writing this review. Meeting Jun was the highlight of my trip. I have always had a fascination of NK and defectors. I felt I was quite well read on the matter but meeting Jun and learning about things through his experience was eye opening. It really touched my soul. It makes you appreciate the small luxuries in life like our morning coffee. Honestly I can't recommend this tour enough, for me, learning stories from Jun is more valuable than going on some other generic tour.
This was a highlight of our short trip to Seoul. Unexpectedly interesting and eye opening experience. It was recommended by a friend who did it a few months before us and couldn’t stop talking about it. Jun had so much to tell us and we will never forget what we learned on this tour. 100% recommend!!
The best tour we’ve ever had! Jun has looked after us very well and his story will stay with us forever. Even our teenage girls were fascinated by his story. We definitely recommend this tour.
I've been on several DMZ tours after living in Korea several years, and this was by far the most insightful and personal. Jun's story is not typical, as one of relatively few male defectors, and hearing of the various stages and trials of his life in the North and eventual escape was fascinating. My family said it was one of the most insightful tours we've been on, helped to understand the human element of living in North Korea as well as the issues of integration in South Korea society by the relatively small North Korean defector community. Odusan is closer than most DMZ observatories as the river border is narrower than the rest of the DMZ, and you can see North Koreans at the guard posts, fields, school, etc. We happened to see children ice skating (an old phone or camera with a single lens is best to capture pictures through the powerful, mounted binoculars). The North Korean meal was also outstanding, hearing the stories behind the various dishes, cooked by a chef who worked at an elite Pyongyang restaurant. I can't recommend this tour more highly for a unique, personal insight into life in North Korea.
Me & my wife had an unforgettable day on this tour & would highly recommended. Our guide openly & honestly shared his experiences as a North Korean defector which provided us with a truly unique perspective on the DMZ.
